A sit down with the Charlotte-based oil painter Ann Watcher.

Artist Ann Watcher does not consider herself a painter of people, places, or things, but rather someone who uses art to capture color, expression, light, and texture. And she does. Her work is vibrant, textural, and saturated. She captures still life, flowers, landscapes, and the essence of people enjoying a day at the beach.

The Charlotte-based oil painter has made a name for herself here in the Queen City and the nation beyond. Her work has been juried in three consecutive national exhibits in Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society.

Watcher’s interest in art began holistically and naturally. As a child she was inspired by the midnight sky blanketed by stars.“The universe reached out to me and inspired me with a vastness of promise and possibility that follows me today,” Watcher explained.

After earning a BFA in Studio Art from the University of South Carolina, Watcher spent an internship semester at the Corcoran Gallery in the Department of Prints and Drawings in Washington, DC. Following that she spent a summer at the New York Studio School where she studied drawing and figure painting.

After marrying and having children, she spent a few years away from the art world. Now Ann is back and has been making a splash since. We sat down with her to discuss her process, her inspirations, and the future of her art.

What does your artistic process look like from the start to finish of a piece?

The scale of a piece often determines my process as I may apply as many as seven layers of paint to large paintings to build up the textures in some areas and glazes in others. On smaller paintings, I may tone the support lightly, paint wet into wet and perhaps finish in one sitting depending on the subject matter, or continue to work over a period of sessions. I like to work on many paintings at once and will go back and forth. I enjoy the energy and immediacy of painting from life, but I also use my own photo references. Sometimes, I will just catch something on my camera phone in the blink of an eye.

How would you describe your style and how has your style changed over time?

I feel like I am an abstract expressionist at the beginning of my paintings, especially the large ones, in which I get shapes and color notes down and broad, gestural strokes. The groundwork of the expressionism is then worked into a more sculptural type of impressionism in which I want to include more detail in an area that may need emphasis while leaving other areas with less detail but with the intent of imbuing emotion throughout the painting as a whole. I think that magic can be created from the brush and paint. I am known for bold color choices, and I don't think that will ever change. I love color!

Who or what most inspires you?

The way the world is filled with art inspires me, from the embrace and magic of nature to all of the arts, music, dance, visual, literature. My love for all of these brings me to my canvas. I paint in a world of music (that's why I can't share a studio with anyone lol).

What are your most treasured highlights in your career so far?

In 2017, I was invited by the U.S. Ambassador to Bahrain, William V. Roebuck, to participate in Art in Embassies. Ambassador Roebuck's wife, Ann, wanted to put together an art exhibit featuring women artists of the South. Five of my paintings were featured. In addition, I taught several workshops throughout the week to young children who were a total pleasure. It was a lot of fun to be embraced by another culture.

What do you find most challenging about life as an artist and the most rewarding?

The most challenging aspect is capturing the essence or soul of the painting. The most rewarding aspect is capturing the essence or soul of the painting.

THE VAULT

The Mint Museum will open The Vault in July at Mint Museum Uptown at Levine Center for the Arts. The show will run through September 17, 2023.

The exhibition leads off “The Year of the Collector” that includes a roster of special exhibitions that feature outstanding collections with works that are as diverse as the collectors.

Organized by guest curator Jessica Gaynelle Moss, The Vault presents the private collections of four prominent Charlottebased collectors: Judy and Patrick Diamond, Nina and James Jackson, Christy and Quincy Lee, and Cheryse and Christopher Terry. Though each couple has a varied philosophy on what they collect, each has amassed an incredible selection of works by Black artists in addition to significant pieces that represent cultural, artistic, and historical interests.

“The Vault is an exhibition that gives a peek into the homes of some of Charlotte’s most passionate art collectors — what they find fascinating, meaningful, or beautiful — and may inspire others to start their own collection of objects that have personal value,” says Todd Herman, PhD, president and CEO of The Mint Museum.

AN ARTISTIC NECESSITY

Meet Amanda Anderson, owner and lead photographer of A Print Shop, a fine art photography studio located in the heart of South End. While A Print Shop is a relatively new venture, Anderson has been in the business of photography for over 11 years, though her artistic roots can be traced back to childhood. She can even pinpoint the exact moment she knew photography was destined to be her medium.

“It was the day I found National Geographic magazines,” Anderson explains. “I found myself obsessed with photos in National Geographic, spending hours poring over the stories of places I dreamed of visiting. The images brought everything to life for me, and in ways told the story even better than the words that accompanied them. They served as a means of connection, they made me feel connected to the story in ways words never did for me. I think this was when I knew that photography was in me.”

Born and raised in Charlotte, NC, Anderson got her start in

photography in her high school journalism class. Even today she describes her photography style as “fairly journalistic” in nature. At Davidson College she earned a degree in biology as a means to travel abroad and photograph exotic places such as Baja, Mexico, and Kenya. Her print collection spans an impressive 20 years of travel and later this year she plans to release new prints from her time spent living in Kenya.

A Print Shop, like many creative ventures, was born out of artistic necessity. During the 2020 COVID lockdown, Anderson could no longer offer her in-person services and was forced to evaluate other avenues for her beloved craft.

“Instead of spending my time editing portraits, I spent that time culling through years and years of my own personal work to find a collection that felt cohesive and created the type of connection and sense of calm I so desperately needed during that time,” says Anderson.

What drew you toward prints, and how do you decide which of your photos should become prints?

This is a tough question, how do I decide which photos become prints? In some ways, I just know. I may take 50 shots in the same spot, of the same thing and when I see “the one” I just know. It feels different. It makes you feel something. It makes you feel connected to that place or that subject or the story the image tells. For me, it’s all about feeling and connection, which is evoked through the colors, textures, and the composition of my images. The perfect balance for me, makes me take a deep breath and exhale. It feels calm and intriguing all at once. It makes the viewer feel connected to that place, or that story, or that period of time.

Is there a specific facet of nature that inspires your art the most? Light and shadows and the constant change of it all is what inspires me most. Something you see in one light may look completely different in another light. So taking the time to notice those details and appreciate the change is all but a metaphor for life, isn’t it? Light and shadows affect the way we feel about certain things. They create intrigue and beauty, highlighting moments we may not otherwise notice.

What memorable responses have you had to your work?

My favorite response ever is when someone asks me the story behind one of my prints. It’s as if they know there is a story there. Which ultimately, is my goal, to be a storyteller through my art and to evoke some sort of emotion in people.

My favorite sale to date was when I received a random call from an unknown number, which I typically do not answer, but something told me to pick this one up. Turns out, it’s a local restaurant owner who saw one of my prints hanging in the hall outside my studio and asked to take it out on approval. That print is now hanging in the newest, chicest pocket bar in Charlotte, The Green Room! I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cry tears of joy after that sale. This was the first completely random person I had zero personal connections to, who showed genuine interest in my large scale printed work, enough so to purchase a piece straight off the wall.

What is most challenging about fine art photography for you, and what's most rewarding?

The most challenging part about fine art photography is putting yourself and your work out there in the world. It feels a lot like baring your soul and giving away your secrets, and hoping somehow people love it but also knowing that not everyone will. It took me nearly 20 years to gather up the courage to showcase my talent and feel confident in my own skin enough to say “This is me, this is what I do, and this is how I see the world.” Oddly enough, this is also the most rewarding part! To see others enjoy my work, is truly the best compliment I could receive.

A FASHIONABLE FAMILY AFFAIR

Piccadilly started as a mission to create beautiful, functional custom clothing for children but quickly evolved to include styles for adult women that could coordinate. Piccadilly itself is similarly centered around family: They’re a family-owned business made up of, Katherine Pugh, Courtney Hall Pugh, and Sadie Pugh Wilson.

The three co-founders started Piccadilly in 2020, bringing their individual passions for fashion into the mix. Together, they shared a desire to make clothing for women “who love to feel put together” and by creating a corresponding children’s line, they could make effortless style even easier.

“Most people think we’re crazy working so closely as a family, and we can assure you it isn’t without its

challenges,” Katherine shares. “However, our love and respect for one another supersedes everything, and our confidence in each other is what ultimately makes Piccadilly work and keeps it fun!”

Katherine explains that there is a beautiful balance between the trio that allows each woman to wear different hats in different seasons.

“We’ve never stopped to assign specific titles because depending on the day or situation, our strengths always complement one another. We certainly step into roles of “the dreamer” or “the detailed one,” but there’s a constant ebb and flow of creativity all around.”

When did the business form and where did the name of your business come from?

Katherine and Courtney met during a chance encounter on a London tour bus. Katherine’s son, Ben, connected with Courtney back in the states and 10 weeks later…they were engaged. The name Piccadilly is a nod to the ever-echoing tube announcer voice that remained in our heads following this trip: “Next Stop, Piccadilly Circus!” It’s the best reminder of when our families first united.

Where does your love of fashion come from?

Over the years, we’ve all expressed our love of fashion and creating things with our hands in different ways. Sadie cofounded a bowtie business in high school and now works as a full-time artist in Charleston. Katherine has made and designed clothing and interiors for friends and family for at least two-decades. Courtney mainly safety-pinned her own creations along the way as she worked in corporate roles. Designing a line that is fresh and functional satisfies a love of fashion that’s always been there for each of us.

How do you decide on new designs or collections?

We look for inspiration everywhere: An amazing wallpaper in a restaurant bathroom, a dress on the cover of an Australian magazine, gingko leaves we’ve plucked from trees in Charleston — truly anywhere. We pull shape, structure, color, and inspiration out of mundane things and partner with amazing designers here in Charlotte and Wilmington to bring our vision to life.

How would you describe Piccadilly’s style?

Piccadilly was born to fill a market space in apparel we couldn’t find ourselves. Something posh and playful. Classic and different. Southern and European. Our mission is to give our customers beautiful clothing coupled with the freedom to live in it.

Do you work with anyone locally here in Charlotte?

We’ve had the privilege to work with some insanely talented women. We owe so much of our growth and success to a handful of women that have partnered or worked with us over the last two years and these relationships are the most treasured part of this journey. We couldn’t share our story without mentioning the following local powerhouses: Meredith Owens with Design A La Mere (based in Wilmington), Riley Goodman with Good Mood Design Co., Erin Bowman with Erin Bowman Creative, Anna Stallmann with Anna Stallmann Communications, and Lindsey Reagan Thorne for branding and partnerships.

Is there anything new or upcoming this year that we should know about?

Always! We have three new styles in the works for Summer ‘23, and this might be our favorite collection yet. Stay tuned for some sneak peeks and amazing collaborations in the weeks ahead.

CULINARY CONNECTIONS

Restaurant Constance makes a splash in Charlotte.

SSam Diminich is not new to the food and beverage industry. A 30-year food service veteran, he has worked in kitchens in Philadelphia and here in the Queen City, including BLT Steak at the Ritz-Carlton and Upstream Restaurant in SouthPark. He has also been one of only a handful of contenders to out-cook Bobby Flay on Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay. What is new, however, is the way Diminich is asking Charlotteans to think about dining and our local food system with his new venture, Restaurant Constance.

Restaurant Constance emerged as an extension of Your Farms

Your Table, a meal delivery organization Diminich started at the height of the pandemic, in part to support local farmers and suppliers who watched their orders plummet as restaurants across the nation shuttered. He viewed Restaurant Constance as an opportunity to bring his deepening connections with local farmers to a larger Charlotte audience. That opportunity was driven both by the natural growth of Your Farms Your Table and by Diminich’s personal growth as a leader, father, chef, and human. Having battled addiction for 30 years and homelessness for more than a year, this moment of opportunity did not come without struggle.

“Pre-sobriety, I wasn’t around much as a dad. I was pretty much gone for almost 2.5 years,” Diminish recalls. “So when I got sober and realized I could still cook, I promised myself if I ever opened a space I would name it after my oldest, Constance (which means ‘steadfast’). She was conscious of my struggles and saw most of it firsthand. So opening this restaurant has been really emotional and really special. It’s a great example of the possibilities of living a life sober.”

FARM-DRIVEN FOOD

At Restaurant Constance, the food menu shifts monthly in order to keep time with the changing seasons and harvests. That’s because every ingredient is sourced through local and regional farmers and suppliers, who Diminich meets through farmer’s markets, referrals, and generally shaking the farmer phone tree. “Our local food system is all connected,” explains Diminich. “We just have to find where it begins and bring that to the table.”

No matter the season, a typical menu at Restaurant Constance might feature raw bar selections, a smattering of appetizers, meat or seafood-forward entrees, seasonal sides, and desserts made in collaboration with Charlotte’s Wentworth & Fenn.

In addition to its flavorful food menu, the restaurant offers an extensive beverage program with a sensitivity to how tastes pair best together across the dining experience. A

robust non-alcoholic beverage program, perhaps the best in Charlotte, leads the charge at Restaurant Constance, with an assortment of offerings made in-house and sporting quirky names inspired by pop culture references. Other beverage options include alcoholic cocktails, beer, wine, and coffee from Enderly Coffee.

FOOD-DRIVEN FELLOWSHIP

For Diminich, Restaurant Constance is more than a testament to his personal journey. His emerging role as a restaurateur is borderline hereditary. As a youth, he grew up in his father’s and grandfather’s restaurants, learning how powerfully food can create connections. When designing the interior of Restaurant Constance, he wanted to create a space that would prompt instant comfort and ease. “When guests walk in, I want them to feel at home,” says Diminich.

Concrete floors, a white cement wall, and an exposed ceiling give the bones of the restaurant a slightly industrial feel that is greatly softened by more rustic elements, like shiplap walls, a glass barn door that offers a glimpse into the kitchen, and framed family photos hung from the walls. The overall effect is an inviting interior that foregrounds the most critical ingredient at Restaurant Constance: People.

“Restaurant Constance is a culinary experience that’s…fueled by people,” says Diminich. “I see us more as a unifier of our food system than your typical farm-to-table restaurant.”

Open in West Charlotte, Biblio is Chef Sam Hart’s moody, gothic-style wine and tapas bar that describes itself as “the first reverse wine-pairing restaurant in the world.” Guests select a bottle first, and Chef de Cuisine John Cruz then creates plates to complement the varietal selected. The only menu

you’ll receive is the wine list, and the price of each bottle has been “inflated” to also include the cost of your meal.

Here, paired with a glass of bold red, is Cruz’s take on a prime striploin that’s plated with broccoli rabe, an herbaceous mojo verde, and finished with beef jus.

SOUTHERN DISTILLING’S

SOUTHERN SOUR

Southern Distilling Company is the first legal distillery in Iredell County, and one of the largest privately owned distilleries outside of Kentucky.

The 20 acre Statesville campus houses a tasting room, production facility, barrel aging warehouse, bottling area, and conference room. There’s also two rickhouses on the campus, one currently filled with 24,000 barrels and another just starting to fill up.

Paul Kowalski graduated from University of South Carolina with a Double Major in Marketing & Management and dual interests in business and the building process. He quickly found a job working for a large regional builder, where he discovered how fruitful client relationships and successful construction projects could spark joy and satisfaction in his professional life.

After five years with the regional builder, Kowalski founded his own business, Paul Kowalski Builders, ultimately marrying his business and building interests. “I felt my aptitude for process and structure would be an asset to the remodeling industry and create a refreshing experience for my clients,” says Kowalski.

The firm’s signature project has become design-to-build remodels, including additions, whole home remodels, and reconfigured spaces. “Frequently, our homeowners know

what they need from their home but aren’t sure how to achieve the goal or what it should look like,” explains Kowalski. “For example, their family has grown or changed and they know they need an additional bedroom/bathroom and more flex space, but don’t know where or how to make it happen.”

That’s why every project begins with a detailed discussion between PKB and the client to iron out the client’s needs, intentions, goals, and aesthetic. This information becomes the foundation for the architectural design team, who thoroughly assess the space in question before drafting custom plans. JAPANESE STYLE MEETS SCANDINAVIAN

IInterior design is more than the look of a house. It’s a way of self-expression—a way for someone to show others their own personal meaning of home. That’s why it’s not always easy to design a home with more than one client in mind.

Fortunately, Emmie Bok and the design team from Kathryn Lilly Interiors knows how to take competing ideas and blend them into a cohesive, well-designed home—just like they did with this Japandi house in Davidson, NC.

When the owners of this home—two young professionals with a sweet dog—came to Kathryn Lilly Interiors, they had very different visions of what they wanted their shared home to look like. One wanted a strong focus on Japanesestyle interior designs, which are categorized by their clean, minimalist look and an emphasis on connecting with nature.

This is often done with natural-looking furniture and simple color palettes. The other client preferred Scandinavian looks, which are categorized by the same minimalist ideas as Japanese designs, but with more of an emphasis on creating warmth through texture and textiles.

Any guest touring their home today would agree that the couple got the best of both worlds. The 6,000-square-foot home features four bedrooms, four full bathrooms, and three half bathrooms, all designed with these elements in mind. Walking into the home, guests are greeted with clean rooms and minimalist furniture that work well with the strong natural light coming into each space. The wood accents and light colors show off the home’s sophisticated simplicity. The kitchen is likely the best example, where the sharp,

geometric lines from the walls and countertops bring out a nice contrast with the natural wood cabinets made by Almond Custom Cabinets and floors made by Mohawk Industries. By having the appliances as flush with the walls as possible, the designers made the line breaks on the walls and ceiling feel all the more deliberate.

In other areas of the home, the Scandinavian influence is more apparent. The offices, for example, both show off a blend of textures and materials while still keeping that minimalist feel. The dark, solid-colored walls in one office contrast well with the light floors, while the naturalistic area rug gives the space a bit more warmth. In the other office, the color palette is lighter, but the contrasting textures and patterns are still there to make this room feel inviting.

By understanding Scandinavian and Japanese-style designs at a strong level, Kathryn Lilly Interiors was able to give the owners of this home a Japandi interior design that felt true to them both.

Voluntourism and the preservation of a valuable coastline: The Outer Banks.

As one of our most beloved vacation destinations, The Outer Banks is a near perfect coastline. It has rolling sand dunes, diverse wildlife, a rich history, uncrowded beaches, and abundant activities. But with all that beauty and soul comes a lot of responsibility.

A TRIP TO THE BEAUTIFUL, SPECIAL & WILD

As we crossed the bridge over the Alligator River, we were immediately reminded how beautiful, special, and wild the Outer Banks are. We saw gorgeous views of expansive lapping water, bald cypress trees, and seagulls coasting on currents of warm air. Then, only a couple miles down the road — on the last bit of Carolina mainland just east of Roanoke Island — we had a rare encounter. A massive black bear snacking on berries welcomed us to the barrier islands.

The next day, we spent sunset just south of Oregon Inlet at the historic Life Saving Station. This building is nestled at the base of towering dunes on Pea Island, a delicate and constantly changing piece of land at the mercy of the encroaching ocean.

At Bodie Island, we saw my favorite lighthouse. It's been there since the 19th century. You get multiple vantage points with its neighboring boardwalk, and it has a double keeper's quarters, which is really unique.

To our surprise, not only did we get to see the iconic landmark, but we also found one of my favorite endangered species: the Timber Rattler. A sighting like this is something to celebrate. They're pretty rare to see, but serve as a reminder that you're in a special place deep in the national seashore where wildlife thrives at the edge of the lighthouse clearing. These animals are

simply looking to either bathe in the sun or relax in the shade. Let them alone and they'll keep to themselves. There's also a wonderful variety of birds to see and the common sightings of white tail deer.

On our third day we went aquarium hopping. We visited both Jennette's Pier and the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island, where I literally spent an hour in a trance watching the jellyfish swim. The education kids and adults receive here is extremely valuable in further protecting both the ocean and the wildlife that live in it. After all, awareness and connection are so important in spreading the gospel of conservation.

And then, on our last day we made it to the southernmost tip of Hatteras, where you can experience a stunning landscape sans the crowds. This place is the end of the world here in the Old North State, and because of stengthening storms and exposure, the shoreline is dynamic and in constant flux. But it is simply the best — raw yet peaceful, with the bluest water — and truly pristine.

This trip reminded us that the Outer Banks are nothing less than a blessing to all who visit. The area is an amalgamation of wind-swept beaches, historic landmarks, wild creatures (land and sea), even pirate lore...not to mention the sunsets are mind boggling. But it's also fragile, deserves respect, and needs constant work to maintain. Luckily, there are so many people, organizations, and initiatives that share in the mission of protecting this wonderful place. So, if you are planning a trip like ours to the Outer Banks, along with seeing all the sights and enjoying warm days on the sand, we also hope and encourage you to love it like a local. Here's some of the ways you can help and do just that!

JOIN OUTER BANKS SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES & PLAY YOUR PART

If you’re one of those visitors that wants to give back and ponders how they can lend a hand in the Outer Banks, these are several options that have a very postive impact.

Keeping The Beaches Clean

On Cape Hatteras National Seashore, miles of golden sand meet sapphire waters. These beaches create endless opportunities for a wide array of activities. As the first public land designated as a national seashore, the beaches of Cape Hatteras are celebrated as some of the most pristine and natural in the country. Even as such, they are no more immune than anywhere else from the traces people leave behind, with the usual kinds of trash.

Our primary goal when we travel is to leave it better than we found it. That means not only should you take your trash with you, but, if you happen to come across any other trash, try to grab it and dispose in appropriate locations as well.

The OBX 5 Minute Beach Cleanup and the Surfrider Foundation through their Adopt-A-Beach program are two of the most

prominent organizations making efforts for group beach cleanups and inviting volunteers from far and near to join.

Protecting The Sea Turtles

The Leatherback Turtle, Green Turtle, and Hawksbill Turtle are all critically endangered species that make the Outer Banks their home. These sea turtles are especially susceptible to the negative effects of plastic and debris left on the beach. Most consider them food and swallow them, leading to intestinal blockage and death. Similarly, discarded fishing lines can become a life-threatening trap for sea turtles. Supporting or volunteering with the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.) is one great way to help.

Preservation At The Pier

Preservation efforts aren’t simply being made on the beaches of the OBX but also in its fishing and beachfront activities. Jennette's Pier is probably the most fitting facility to look up to, known for its world-class fishing and youth adventure camps. The Pier has made significant progress to become environmentally friendly by adopting wind-powered turbines and passive solar systems.

NON-PROFITS IN THE OUTER BANKS

There are over 100 non-profit organizations on the Outer Banks helping protect the ocean, beaches, and wildlife. Here are a handful that are doing amazing work and need volunteers or donations.

• Better Beaches OBX takes active steps to create a sustainable future for the OBX shoreline.

• Outer Banks Beekeepers' Guild encourages sustainable methods among beekeepers of the Outer Banks.

• Outer Banks Conservationists act to protect natural, cultural, and historical resources through public education and outreach.

• The North Carolina Beach Buggy Association (NCBBA) promotes responsible beach driving practices and engages in conservation initiatives to safeguard sea turtles and shorebirds.

• The Outer Banks Center for Dolphin Research studies dolphin populations, monitors their well-being, and raises public awareness about these remarkable marine creatures.

Events are a great way to donate your time, spread the message, and meet likeminded people with similar conservation values. These OBX events are happening in the next several month and will assuredly raise both money and awareness for their causes.

A STAY STEEPED IN HISTORY

For a fun adventure coupled with a relaxing reprieve, the Historic Tapoco Lodge is the place to stay.

Looking at Tapoco for the first time, it’s easy to see the charm. The towering trees and vining plants surrounding the lodge make it feel almost hidden—a part of the forest rather than just something sitting on its land. This minimalistic connection with nature is one reason guests keep coming back. A stay at this lodge is not for those looking to wrap themselves in modern luxury, but rather for those looking to embrace simplistic comforts from a more simplistic time.

The historic lodge was originally built in 1930 as a place to house those working on the Cheoah dams and similar projects in the area. While it’s undergone many renovations since then to expand and update the property, it’s also kept many of the rustic features that have been around since its inception. From the lodge’s wrought iron pillars to its handcrafted wooden furniture, guests can find a bit of history in every corner of the lodge’s many buildings. Those buildings include a main lodge with nine rooms, plus 18 rooms available throughout their separate cabins.

But so too are the Carolinas’ hidden gems — beaches that fly under the radar despite a bustling social scene or that maintain their low profile by being challenging to access (but well worth the effort). Harness the invigorating power of exploring somewhere new by visiting one of these hidden Carolina coastal gems.

Ocracoke's Lifeguard Beach

Ocracoke is for the beach-goer who’s not afraid of a little originality and defiance in their destination. Unapologetically challenging to access, this North Carolina destination is for the traveler who’s prepared for things to be a little rough around the edges. You won’t find world-class golf courses (or any golf courses, for that matter) or ferris wheels or anything remotely flashy. This laidback area keeps things casual to better the spotlight on its pristine, undeveloped shorelines.

Pea Island

This destination south of Oregon Inlet is one of our favorite places to watch the sunset! Here you can find beautiful views

of the sound, dunes, the Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station, and very secluded and beautiful beaches! We highly recommend a visit to this quiet and picturesque OBX island for not only the beach but also views of the iconic life saving station.

Hunting Island Beach

Although Hunting Island might be South Carolina’s most popular state park, it’s still something of an afterthought when it comes to planning a beach vacation. Located just east of Beaufort, sandwiched between Harbor Island and Fripp Island, the 5,000 acres that comprise Hunting Island includes five miles of beach, lush marshes, and a maritime forest. Visitors can also explore a saltwater lagoon, historic lighthouse, nature center, and fishing pier before retiring to a rustic cabin or campsite.

Caswell Beach

Halfway between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, joining Bald Head as part of North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands, Caswell Beach is perched at the eastern edge of Oak Island at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. With an 18-hole championship golf course, an operational lighthouse, easy access to the charming town of Southport, and some of the least crowded shores along the Brunswick Islands, Caswell Beach can easily become the kind of destination that visitors return to year after year.

Waites Island

If you have never heard of Waites Island, you’re not alone. Given its attention-grabbing neighbors (Myrtle Beach and Cherry Grove), this beach easily flies under the radar like a teenager sheltering in the shadow of their older, rowdier siblings. This gentle island is the northernmost of South Carolina’s barrier islands, and, although it is close enough to shore to be accessed by kayak or paddleboard, Waites remains a serene wildlife habitat. In fact, Coastal Carolina University maintains a small research facility on its shores.

Fripp Island Beach

Fripp Island is a teeny speck of land, a crumb cast off from South Carolina’s coastal edge. Less than a mile wide and only a few miles long, the island is home to quiet beaches and ample wildlife. Almost 200 bird species inhabit or migrate through the island, as well as alligators, raccoons, and dolphins. Even more spectacularly, the island is a nesting site for loggerhead turtles. Although the island is only 25 minutes from Beaufort, it’s private, meaning that only those with reservations or property on Fripp can avail themselves of this island’s ample natural and manmade amenities.

Folly Field Beach

While Coligny Beach might be the most popular beach on Hilton Head, Folly Field Beach is a lesser known alternative where Hilton Head locals tend to play. Here, a wooded boardwalk opens on a wide stretch of sand, where tides create tiny pools perfect for young beachgoers. Because Folly Field Beach is located in a mostly residential area, it’s a good idea to pack your own refreshments and hunker down for a day of sunny relaxation and salty fun.

Morris Island

To access the sandbar near Morris Island, visitors will need to

charter a boat or be prepared to paddle a few miles (Folly Beach is probably the best launch point for paddlers). Although a bit more challenging to access than some of its more popular Charleston area neighbors, this beach affords the intrepid traveler shores lined with intriguing shells and other ocean artifacts, stunning views of the Charleston Harbor, close proximity to the Morris Island Lighthouse, and dolphin sightings.

Edisto Beach

At the southern tip of Edisto Island, which is located about halfway between Beaufort and Charleston, a corner of land juts into the Atlantic like a rogue tooth. Known as Edisto Beach, this area offers just over four miles of sandy shores. On the northern half of the beach, rowdier waters beckon to beachgoers in search of a spicier swim, while calmer waters can be found along the southern half of the beach. A stone’s throw from Edisto Beach State Park and the A.C.E. River Basin, Edisto Beach offers easy access to some of the Lowcountry’s most fascinating natural habitats.

Capers Island

Capers Island is a stunning barrier island near Charleston, South Carolina that attracts nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The island is only accessible by boat, offering an off-the-grid experience that uncovers a treasure trove of natural wonders. Capers Island boasts untouched beaches, vast salt marshes, and dense maritime forests that create an otherworldly landscape.

One of the island's most standout features is its bountiful wildlife, making it a birdwatcher's paradise with an array of bird species including herons, egrets, and wood storks. Visitors can also enjoy playful dolphin sightings or encounter sea turtles nesting along the sandy shores. There's alligators too on the inside of the island so be aware. The island's pristine beaches beg for leisurely strolls and sunbathing, while the marshes

provide the chance for peaceful kayaking or paddleboarding surrounded by coastal beauty.

Pole Road

Pole Road is a road of sand at the bottom tip of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This road runs along the coast and is used by off-road vehicles (ORVs) to access some remote beaches. The name comes from the tall wooden poles that line the way and guide drivers on the beach.

Fishing enthusiasts and beachgoers with ORV permits frequent Pole Road for its access to various beach areas and fishing spots, as well as stunning views of the Cape Hatteras coastline. To ensure up-to-date information on access, permits, and any restrictions or closures, it's essential to contact the National Park Service or Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Keep in mind that ORV permits and regulations are in place and should be followed at all times.

Portsmouth Island

Explore the history and natural beauty of Portsmouth Island, a historic and uninhabited barrier island off the coast of North Carolina's Outer Banks. This well-preserved ghost town, accessible only by boat, ferry, or private vessel, offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and imagine life as it was for its former inhabitants. Discover Portsmouth Island's historic buildings, including the Portsmouth Life-Saving Station, schoolhouse, church, and homes. and Cape Island are secluded and unspoiled, offering you a rare opportunity to have them all to yourself.

Hammocks Beach State Park

Otter Island

Otter Island is a stunning barrier island situated just three miles southwest of Edisto Island, in the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge. It's under the protection of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and is home to an array of wildlife, including otters, shorebirds, and sea turtles. Due to its protected status, access to Otter Island is currently quite restricted. You'll have to obtain a permit from SCDNR to visit the island, and overnight camping and fires are prohibited. However, visitors are welcome to engage in day-use activities such as hiking, beachcombing, and birdwatching.

Kure Beach

If you have visited Wilmington, then you are probably familiar with Carolina Beach, with its classic beach boardwalk and ample entertainment opportunities. However, you might not have heard of Kure Beach. Just 15 miles from downtown, this beach offers a quieter retreat characterized by sandy shores bordered by a charming small town. Warm up on 25 miles of surrounding trails and then take a dip in Lake James’ crisp blue water or gently float across the lake’s surface in a canoe or kayak. No matter how you spend your time on Lake James, end your day with a beer at Fonta Flora’s Whippoorwill Farm.

Nantahala Lake

The Nantahala National Forest is one of the most beautiful corners of North Carolina. Better known for Great Smokies’ peaks and exceptional whitewater, this area keeps one of its treasures more secret: drive to the top of the Nantahala Gorge and you’ll find a deep, blue pool of crisp lake water. Nantahala Lake is a scenic oasis perfect for both relaxation and play.

Jordan Lake

The undeveloped banks of this lake make for a restful retreat for the more rustic traveler. Stay on one of the many campgrounds for constant communing with nature and quick lakeside access. Pass an afternoon on the Bald Eagle Observation Deck, keeping an eye out for America’s regal representative.

Finally, for a change, carve out time for a meal at the iconic and elegant Fearrington House Restaurant, just 20 minutes north of Jordan Lake near Pittsboro.

Lake Marion

South Carolina’s Lake Marion is a fisherman’s dream, positioned halfway between Columbia and Charleston. Drop a line for largemouth bass, white perch, striped bass, white bass, crappie, channel catfish, bream, sunfish, and the Arkansas blue catfish. However, keep an eye out for alligators: over a hundred call Lake Marion and the surrounding Santee National Wildlife Refuge home.

Lake Norman

North Carolina’s largest lake is mere minutes from the Queen City. Lake Norman is a summer playground for multimillionaires and locals alike. Hop in a boat and cruise past lakeside mountains, carve through Norman’s many coves atop a pair of water skis, or refuel at one of the area’s many lakefront restaurants, like Joe and Katy Kindred’s Hello, Sailor.

High Rock Lake

Just an hour from the center of Charlotte, High Rock Lake is the second largest lake in North Carolina and is just north of Uwharrie National Forest. It’s the perfect destination for a getaway by virtue of its many boating opportunities, water activities, and prime location smack dab in the middle of North Carolina’s wine country.

Lake Glenville

Lake Glenville has a few differentiating features, including its status as the highest lake east of the Mississippi and its location within a mountain rain forest. It boasts a little something for everyone: boat rentals, waterfalls, a sandy beach, and plenty of fishing (expect to catch large and smallmouth bass, walleye, yel-

low perch, crappie, rainbow and brown trout, large brim, and a few catfish). Lake Glenville is a quick half hour from quaint Highlands, NC, so plan to spend the night at the charming Old Edwards Inn and Spa.

Fontana Lake

Sandwiched between the southern border of the Smokies and the northern border of Nantahala National Forest, Fontana Lake attracts fishermen from around the country in pursuit of smallmouth bass, muskie, and walleye. Plus, only 10% of the shoreline is developed. The rest is owned by the National Park Service or US Forest Service, so visitors can enjoy a serene retreat immersed in nature.

Lake Murray

Just a hop and a skip west of Columbia, Lake Murray is a popular day trip location for Carolinians. With 600 miles of shoreline, Lake Murray offers a bounty of activities, from quiet walks along Dreher State Island State Park to raucous boat rides from one lakeside restaurant to another.

THE BEACH TOWNS

Duck, NC

When you head east to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, visiting Duck Beach is a must. Quirky name aside, Duck is a thriving coastal community with an expansive stretch of beautiful beach. Kayak through its unique wetlands, then head back into town to visit the local hotspots. Free of the summer tourists, Duck’s calming waterside boardwalk and local shops will make you feel as if you’ve stumbled upon a hidden island ripe for exploration.

Isle of Palms, SC

Neighboring Sullivans Island, Isle of Palms is home to two wellknown golf courses, the Links Course and the Harbour Course.

The setting of a now famous battle, celebrated regionally on ‘Carolina Day,’ was Fort Moultrie. It’s been carefully preserved and is a popular landmark for visitors and residents alike. Visitors who aren’t compelled by Sullivan’s Island’s rich history can instead spend their time in the handful of galleries and restaurants or on the shores and enjoying breathtaking views of Charleston Harbor and quiet beaches.

Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island is one of the Carolinas’ most exclusive beachfront destinations. Known for its top notch golf courses—Kiawah Island Golf Resort hosted the 2012 PGA Championship and is

scheduled to host again in 2021—Kiawah is also a place of tranquility. Head straight to Kiawah Island Beachwalker Park: Ten miles of public coastline tempt park goers from within Beachwalker Park, along the western edge of the island. Visitors can also veer off for a gentle stroll through old oaks, pines, iconic palmettos, and yucca plants.

Edisto, SC

Edisto prides itself on being one of South Carolina’s last uncommercialized beaches. Nearly everything—from the restaurants to the lodging—is all locally-owned. Visitors can experience the island in its natural splendor or challenge their mind and learn something new at the town’s famous Edisto Island Serpentarium. Emerald Isle is best known for its uniquely gorgeous green waters, due to the proximity of the Gulf Stream. This proximity also means Emerald offers a warmer option to the cold waters often found along other parts of the Outer Banks, and the isle waters are home to many interesting and beautiful marine creatures. If you go scuba diving, you may even get to explore a shipwreck or two!

Kure Beach, NC

For those looking for a beach that’s a little more secluded, the one at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is an excellent choice. About a half hour away from Wilmington, NC, this beach is maintained in conjunction with the historic Fort Fisher area. Visitors can spend the day at the nearby Fort Fisher Aquarium, then relax by the serene waves.

Hilton Head Island, SC

Hilton Head Island is known for their year-round beautiful weather and, of course, the lighthouse. Hilton Head is also home to a beautiful beach and world-class golf courses. This is a luxurious beach getaway perfect for the whole family.

Sunset Beach got its name from its stunning views and serenity, and is also well known for its wildlife and seafood.

Ocean Isle, NC

Ocean Isle, part of Brunswick county, is a little beach town off the coast of North Carolina. This smaller barrier island is famous for its beautiful 4.5 mile beach, and is the perfect quaint spot to take the family with great dining options and private rental stays. It also happens to be one of the closest beaches to Charlotte on our list, so be sure to add it to yours.

Folly Beach, SC

It’s hard to say what Folly is better known for: legendary sunsets or killer surfing spots. In fact, it seems Folly Beach has a little something for everyone. Home to several endangered species, including loggerhead sea turtles and Wilson’s Plover, naturalists will find something to delight in, while the more urban-oriented will appreciate the beach’s close proximity to downtown Charleston. Drop a fishing line off the Folly Beach pier or take in the sights from a beachside bar.

Corolla Beach, NC

On the sandy shores of Corolla, wild descendants of colonial Spanish mustangs roam freely, grazing in the saltwater cordgrass and galloping along the sloping shores. Visitors flock to Corolla to witness these majestic creatures in a natural habitat. This, in essence, is the magic of Corolla, where visitors come for the wild horses, but stay for the upscale and recently developed amenities.

Nags Head and Jockey’s Ridge, NC

Nags Head is one of the Outer Banks’ most established tourist destinations; since the 1960s, this gorgeous destination has catered to guests with a wide selection of restaurants and conveniences. As comfortable as Nags Head proper is, you’d be remiss not to wander further afield to Jockey’s Ridge, the tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic Coast. Perch atop hills of sand and feel like you’ve landed on a distant planet.

Bald Head Island, NC

Bald Head is for the traveler seeking a serene retreat. Accessible only by a private water vessel or a 20-minute ferry ride across the Cape Fear River, Bald Head Island feels miles from its nearby neighbor of Wilmington, both in terms of geography and tempo. This remote getaway elevates beach life, boasting intimate vacation rental neighborhoods, beach, maritime forest, and marsh-

land, and, remarkably, very few hotels or commercial developments looming over beachgoers.

Capers Island, SC

Like Bulls Island, Capers Island attracts visitors with a penchant for natural settings and seclusion. Accessible only by boat, Capers is an uninhabited, state-owned barrier island. In fact, visitors would never guess it was mere miles from Charleston, given the density of wildlife, such as alligators, white tailed deer, snakes, bottlenose dolphins, and many species of birds (including ospreys and bald eagles) that call this tiny island home.

THE MOUNTAIN TOWNS

Blowing Rock, NC

Located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Blowing Rock was named after The Blowing Rock formation, which offers stunning views of the mountains. The town also is home to Tweetsie Railroad, Blowing Rock Art & History Museum, Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, and various hiking trails with scenic views. This winter, you can also visit Appalachian Ski Mountain, one of the most popular spots to ski in North Carolina.

Brevard, NC

If you’re looking to enjoy nature, Brevard is the place to be. Located at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest, Brevard is home to many waterfalls and other natural rock formations, including Looking Glass Falls, Connestee Falls, Batson Creek Falls. It is also the home of Sliding Rock, a natural water slide that ends in a 60-ft deep pool of water.

West Jefferson, NC

Located in Ashe County, North Carolina, West Jefferson is a quirky town with a lot to offer. When you visit, head over to Carolina Country Wines for a wine tasting, CatchLight Gallery for professional photos of the Blue Ridge and beyond, or Ashe County Cheese, a cheese plant that allows you to experience the whole process. With a perfect balance of modern culture and history, West Jefferson is a charming piece of the Blue Ridge.

Banner Elk, NC

Located between Beech Mountain Ski Resort to the north and Sugar Mountain Ski Resort to the south, Banner Elk is quite a popular place to be in the fall and winter seasons. But, it’s also the perfect place to be outdoors in any season, whether it’s by Wildcat Lake, or just a few miles away at Grandfather Mountain. It’s also known as the culinary hotspot of the High Country, as it’s home to many of the best chefs in the state.

Spruce Pine, NC

Located in Mitchell County, Spruce Pine is a little town with a lot of personality, just a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s home to a variety of different festivals throughout the year, including Fire on the Mountain, which celebrates the work of local blacksmiths, and the Spruce Pine BBQ & Bluegrass Festival in July. This fall, look out for Toe Jam, a twelve hour rock ‘n’ roll event, and the Spruce Pine Potters Market.

Cherokee, NC

Cherokee is a town on the reservation of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. It’s full of history, with attractions like Oconaluftee Indian Village, which offers a look into the lifestyle of the 18th-century Cherokee people. A visit to Cherokee offers the opportunity to pay respect to long traditions, and connect with the outdoors like never before.

Bryson City, NC

Considered the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Bryson City is rich with natural beauty. With rafting and kayaking on the Nantahala River, biking on the Tsali trails, and boating and fishing on Fontana Lake, it doesn’t get much better. Another great attraction is the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, which offers picturesque views of the mountain valleys and a deep river gorge.

Sylva, NC

Well-known in the Carolinas for its beautiful Jackson County courthouse, Sylva is a fun and charming little town to visit. Sylva is also a top Christmas Town in western North Carolina, and boasts fantastic holiday shopping. With scenic mountain views and a hoppin’ brewery scene, Sylva is worth a visit.

Maggie Valley, NC

Known as a friendly city with a small-town charm, Maggie Valley has great opportunities for activities in nature, including hiking, biking, camping, and whitewater rafting. You can also see the elk in the Cataloochee area of the town, where they have been successfully reintroduced.

THE WATERFALLS

Schoolhouse Falls

Schoolhouse Falls, nestled in Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina, is a serene and picturesque waterfall that draws nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. The falls can be accessed via the moderately challenging 2.5-mile Schoolhouse Falls Trail, which is part of the larger Panthertown Valley trail network. As you journey along the trail, you'll pass through lush forests, cross streams, and eventually discover the stunning Schoolhouse Falls.

Linville Falls

Offering dramatic, close-up views, Linville Falls is perhaps the most popular waterfall in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Get there early on a nice day. It’s about a 1.6 mile hike and a very easy hike to the viewing area.

Hickory Nut Falls

This 404-foot natural wonder is so lovely it was featured in the film “The Last of the Mohicans.” It’s about a 1.4 mile hike and the skill level is moderate.

Looking Glass Falls

The 60-feet tall Looking Glass Falls gets its name from the mirror effect created when water freezes on its sides in the winter and then glistens in the sunlight. It’s about a 5 mile hike and the skill level is easy.

Dry Falls

Also known as Upper Cullasja Falls, this 65-foot tall waterfall has a path under the rocks that offers a unique view of the waterfall.

High Falls

High Falls offers breathtaking views and is a jaw-dropping 125feet tall. It’s a short 1 mile hike and the skill level is easy.

Sliding Rock

Sliding Rock is one of North Carolina’s most popular waterfalls. It offers a small plunge pool visitors can slide down the waterfall into.

Triple Falls

Triple Falls was featured in the movie The Last of the Mohicans, making this 120-feet tall waterfall a popular tourist attraction. It’s a short 0.5 mile hike and the skill level is easy.

Hooker Falls

Hooker Falls is also featured in The Last of the Mohicans and offers two views, one of the plunge pool and one overlooking the falls from above.

Moore Cove Falls

This 50-foot tall waterfall allows visitors the chance to go behind the waterfall, for a unique experience. It’s a nice 0.75 mile hike and the skill level is moderate.

Mingo Falls

The epic 120' waterfall five minutes from downtown Cherokee, NC is one of the easiest waterfalls to get to and also one of the most dramatic!

Soco Falls

Two falls join together to create one majestic stream at Soco Falls, just outside of Cherokee, NC. This one is roadside, and the path is steep but very accessible. It's one of our favorites!
