“When I was a child, I experienced a mouth injury that le my front tooth discolored. Since that accident, I have been hiding or editing my smile, afraid to show the discoloration. This year, I decided it was time to make a change and to make my smile a priority. A er my rst visit with Dr. Tesmer at Ballantyne Dentistry, I knew I had made the right decision. I immediately felt at home and knew that the entire team there cared about me. Their priority was to help me feel and look my best. We decided that four veneers were exactly what I needed to enhance my smile. I can’t explain how much this change has impacted my con dence! I am forever grateful that I took this step for myself. I genuinely can’t stop smiling!”

Artist Hannah Stewart Yanetsko has found a way to guide others through a sea of emotions, all while processing her own on a wood panel canvas.
THAT ENDLESS SEA

When artist Hannah Stewart Yanetsko first begins a painting, she starts by selecting the perfect wood panel. Free of imperfections and just the right size, the panel serves as a sturdy, solid canvas for what will eventually become a fluid piece filled with motion. As she plans her painting, she marks the panel with X’s and starts drawing her figures, contemplating how much distance to put between them and what that might mean to someone who can’t stop thinking about those in-between spaces. Next comes the background color, which ranges in her current works mainly from light grays and beiges to deep blues and greens. The wax layer goes on after the color and is exfoliated with a mixture of coffee grounds and dark coloring to give it a stain.

Etching into that wax layer with various tools and repainting it with watered down paints is where things truly start to come together. It’s in this stage that Yanetsko follows her intuition in full force, letting it guide her toward creating a painting that feels as simplistic as it does complex—as modern as it does timeless.

WThis feels true of all her current works, where she depicts people from a bird’s-eye view adrift on her water-like canvas. Sometimes close together, sometimes far apart, these people wade the calm currents of what sometimes looks like the open ocean and sometimes looks like…somewhere else. That “somewhere else” is a place Yanetsko knows well—a place that harbors emotions that can feel inescapable for most people.

“In the depths of every human heart is an ache…” says Yanetsko. “Whether we are wading in oceans of grief, disappointment, uncertainty, a loss, a dying dream, or the space that holds what has been and gone and yet still to come, no one is without this divine ache.”

That divine ache and the place people find themselves in once they feel it is a focal point of Yanetsko’s paintings.

“My paintings are my attempt at showing you a glimpse of that endless sea as a place of abiding rather than achievement,” says Yanetsko. “They are invitations into ‘other’ oceans, where the space between love and mystery becomes a meeting place of grief and goodness.”

34 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM
CULTURE

Recreating that meeting place on her canvases has come with an immense amount of introspection on Yanetsko’s part. After losing her father just before she started sixth grade, Yanetsko found solace in art. She sought out mentors and continued to refine her technique through high school. But it wasn’t until after her daughter was born in July of 2020, while the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns were in full effect, that Yanetsko turned to her art as a fulltime career.

“The weeks following her birth were nothing like I had imagined they would be,” recalls Yanetsko. “They were quiet without family and friends being able to visit, and at times, I felt anxious and lonely. I needed an outlet, and painting had always been mine since my father passed away in 2009.”

Once she got her paintbrushes wet again, she never looked back. After finding an audience for her work through her Instagram, she made her way into several galleries and private collections. Those interested in Yanetsko’s work can view her recent pieces in the Art & Light Gallery in Greenville, SC or through her studio website, where she also takes commissions.

STYLISH & SPORTY

Founder and CEO of her own jewelry line, Chelsea Charles aims to continue to offer access to fun and fashionable accessories designed for sports.

Growing up, Chelsea Charles was always immersed in the world of sports. An athlete herself, Chelsea played everything from basketball to softball to volleyball. Now, as an adult, Chelsea has channeled her love for sports to create her own minimalist fitness inspired jewelry line, Chelsea Charles Jewelry. Although she did not always plan to start her own business, she discovered out of college that she loved the process of creating products and finding ways to launch them. By combining her passion for athletics and her savvy business skills, Chelsea’s jewelry line has grown into a notable brand that achieves its purpose of providing athletes with lightweight and practical accessories.

What’s unique about Chelsea Charles Jewelry?

The company was founded on the premise that jewelry can be functional, beautiful and a pretty symbol of love for your sport. The brand began with the launch of the journal bracelets that double as journals for your wrist. Count Me Healthy bracelets track health-related goals, and Golf Goddess bracelets track your golf game. Wearers count things like daily water consumption, fruit and veggie servings or golf strokes per hole by sliding the beads. Beads stay in place unless moved by the wearer. I’ve been granted both a U.S. utility and a design patent on the concept.

Who is Chelsea Charles jewelry for?

We like to think that our jewelry brand offers a little something for anyone who is passionate about sports and fitness. We’ve created collections for athletes, little girls, sports moms, coaches, and women in the fitness studio space. If you are looking for team or tournament gifts, we specialize in this. A first-time buyer should know that the jewelry is lightweight, comfortable and can be worn on and off the course, court and field.

Why was functional jewelry of interest?

I read an article that the best way to keep track of goals was to journal. And this was before smartphones (again, a long time ago!). I took this article to heart and asked myself the question, “What if I could create a beautiful, convenient journal women could wear on their wrist, with any attire, that could be a pretty reminder of whatever goals they had for themselves?” I’m a creature of habit and having a pretty, yet functional tool to help with goals appealed to me. There was nothing in the market like it, and I became obsessed with trying to design it. It took five years and somewhere around 40 prototypes.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I’m inspired by female athletes that are passionate about their sports. Women athlete Instagram accounts are great inspiration

too. And not just Stories and Reels of them on duty (in uniform), but also how they dress in their downtime or out with friends. So many of them have amazing personal styles. When I design, I like to consider, “Would she wear this out with friends? Would she like this if given as a gift from a friend?” and “Could she wear this to the gym?”

Tell us about the importance of donating to the Women's Sports Foundation. Chelsea Charles Jewelry donates to The Women’s Sports Foundation to help fund its mission to make team sports more accessible to girls and women in all communities. This cause is so important to me. I was an athlete growing up and having a bond with your team and coaches and putting in the work during practices and games is priceless. It creates leadership, confidence and life-long friendships. I think it’s so easy to hide behind social media and when you play a sport, you have to show up and bring your best.

What was the hole in the market you hoped to fill with your line?

Back when we started the golf line, there was a white space for quality, golf-inspired jewelry that complimented the stylish golf attire that was popping up everywhere. We decided to really focus on the packaging and giftability attributes of the collection. Once we saw the positive response to this, we decided to extend the lines to other sports. There are a lot of cheap-looking sports jewelry out there, so we really focused on being the stylish, quality version you would feel good about buying for yourself or gifting to a friend, coach or daughter.

Through Chelsea’s thoughtful designs and personal connection to her products, she has created a business built on ensuring the needs of their customers, while making them look extra stylish in their sport.

CLOTHING AND COMMUNITY

Whether it was creating her own prom dress or designing her tablecloths, owner and founder of the Pearl Pagoda Christina Murphy has never let practicality limit her expectations and visions. When Christina noticed the lack of accessible high-end clothing options beyond the luxury market, she sought the solution by creating her own clothing boutique. Through a mix of bright colors and distinct patterns, Pearl Pagoda curates unique, chic pieces for the women of Charlotte. Today, the welcoming shopping environment stands apart as a remarkable retail experience singular to her shop.

Tell us how Pearl Pagoda started.

Founded in Summer 2020 when options for shopping were extremely limited, The Pearl Pagoda initially operated as an outdoor pop-up at my SouthPark home. This unique shopping experience quickly gained a viral cult following among South Charlotte women. With exponential growth in the last two years, we decided to expand into a freestanding brick-and-mortar store on Park Road.

What is the story behind the name?

I was a Tri-Delta in college, whose stone is a pearl, and I love chinoiserie. We merged the two and came up with Pearl Pagoda!

What sets Pearl Pagoda apart from other area shops?

I would say our style is unique — I like to think I bring an unusual aesthetic to merchandising and curating pieces, and I work hard to find small batch, international labels that aren’t easily found in other places. I’m trying to fill a gap with a price point that is higher quality but not in the luxury market. And, of course, we have our own exclusive line of original designs!

Tell us about your exclusive line, and how that started. When it came to shopping for Pearl Pagoda, particularly with dresses, I wanted something that was high quality fabric, unique prints, and a very-easy-to-wear-but-flattering fit. I wanted my clients to know the piece would last, but didn’t want it to have to feel like a splurge. Basically, it all started by just refusing no as an answer– I don’t have any

formal fashion or sewing experience, but I knew if I kept digging, looking, and asking, I would be able to find the right team of people to move that original line forward.

What are some of your "must-watch" trends that you're loving right now?

I try to stay away from trends — but I would say that I love the prep and vintage athleisure that are prolific right now. I love tennis and love the fact that athletic wear is trending

what clothing, accessories and housewares to offer?

I know it sounds simple but if I like it, I buy it. In order for me to add it to the collection, I have to want to use it, wear it or feel like it’s something special and unique.

What can new clients expect to find at Pearl Pagoda when they are shopping?

I hope that Pearl Pagoda can be an experience for our clients, it’s not just a place to shop, but we are fostering the community that came out of Covid. That’s what made the business have a viral following – during Covid everyone was craving community and connection, so we figured out a safe way to do so. The new brick and mortar expands on that idea, that retail can be beyond your basic definition. It still brings community, and we hope our clients want to stop by and say hi, and that we can continue to foster that community amongst women of all ages in Charlotte!

THE BREAD MAN

@QCEXCLUSIVE • 49 FOOD & DRINK RESTAURANTS • DISHES • LIBATIONS
words SUNNY HUBLER / photos THE PLAID PENGUIN and ANNA NAPHTALI / cover photo ANNA NAPHTALI Restaurateur Jim Noble and Copain Bakery & Provisions expand to bring Charlotteans elegant, daily essentials inspired by French cafes and markets.

AA fresh concept from the mind of inimitable chef and restaurateur Jim Noble, Copain Bakery & Provisions is a collective committed to perfecting bread science and making getting together easy. Fresh loaves, prepared foods and chefdriven provisions are Copain’s bread and butter, but the full scope of the concept is a little more ambitious.

Copain’s brick-and-mortar location—in the form of a European-style boulangerie and patisserie adjoined to Rooster’s in SouthPark—uses century-old techniques, 100% North Carolina milled, organic flour, and European-made steam injected deck ovens to make its artisan breads.

The shop, originally opened in 2020, went through a major renovation in early 2023 to add cafe seating and pastry cases, allowing the team to expand their offerings and giving guests a place to sit and enjoy what the bakery and kitchen have to offer. It’s also part of an expansion Chef Jim Noble has had in mind for a very long time.

Noble first opened a bakery in 1984 for a perfectly functional reason: He needed good bread for his restaurant, and what was currently available wasn’t cutting it. As has been the case many times over the expanse of his multi-decade culinary career, if he couldn’t find it, Jim would make it.

Forty years later and with many more restaurants in his rotation, Noble continues to privilege simplicity on his tables. From Bossy Beulah’s buns to the sprouted wheat sourdough served at The Jimmy, the bread has always been the star of Noble’s show.

“What bread, wine, cheese, and charcuterie all have in common,” Noble notes, “is that all use a process of aging and fermenting. But this is nothing new we’re doing, we’re simply going forward to the past. Just like our culinary forefathers (and mothers) in France, [our team] loves to work with our hands. Our organic, naturally leavened breads take several days to produce, from fermentation to fresh-out-of-the-oven, resulting in bread that is both good and good for you.”

“My husband and I have worked with Jessica on three real estate transactions. We have completed over 20 real estate transactions and Jessica stands out from all the agents we have worked with over 25 years. She is amazing to work with. No detail, big or small is missed with her in the selling or buying process. She is always available to accommodate showings, answer questions, etc. When you have Jessica represent you in buying or selling, she owns the process, knows the process and

makes what is always a stressful situation so much easier. She is very kind and empathetic to the chaos that seems to always erupt with the home buying/selling process, and she has an amazing way to figure out solutions that enable the transactions to be successful. She is passionate about her profession and will bring energy and professionalism to both the buying and selling process. I highly recommend Jessica, whether you are looking for a new home or selling!”

It’s true “slow food”—naturally fermented, naturally risen, organic loaves baked over three days using flour from Lindley Mills, an organic specialty flour mill right here in North Carolina.

At Copain, you can gather your daily needs, from coffee and light breakfast in the morning, to grab-and-go salads and sandwiches at lunch, to prepared meals, fresh bread, and wine for dinner. Or, sit and stay a while. Grab a table and enjoy your cappuccino or a glass of wine, get some work done or catch up with an old friend. Starting in September, Copain will also offer made-to-order sandwiches and salads.

Led by Executive Pastry Chef Crystal Myers, Executive Chef Kevin Darr, and store manager Amy Becker, Copain is dedicated to customizing the experience of each client.

“We can make anything [customers] want, even if it’s not on the menu, we’ll put it together,” Noble says. “The chefs

are very open and receptive to requests – first and foremost, we’re in the service business.”

The folks behind Copain believe that attention to the details brings intention into our lives. Crystal and her team carry that belief into everything they prepare—and they prepare a lot. Expect painterly pastries, savory tarts and quiches, rich pain au chocolats and beautifully sculpted cakes.

Copain was founded on an idea that should be obvious: Sitting down together over thoughtful food and drink is a powerful thing. Copain exists to help you do more of that with ease, while giving Americans a peek into the rich experience of a true French bakery. All you have to do is gather ‘round the table.

Copain is currently open Tuesday - Saturday, 8 am to 6 pm. At 6 pm, the bakery turns over into a private event space available for rentals. info copainbakery.com

CHICKEN SANDWICHES DONE RIGHT

Deliciousness at Bossy Beulah’s new locations.

Chicken sandwiches have exploded in popularity over the years, and it’s not hard to see why. They’re usually healthier than a burger—at least a little—and still have nearly the same level of customization possibilities. Especially here in the South, it’s no wonder that every restaurant seems to have their own signature chicken sandwich.

But just like the way of the burger, the chicken sandwich has all too often veered into the realm of excess. Just how many different types of lettuce need to be on a sandwich?

Does it really need four different cheeses? Toppings piled high between two buns that can barely balance it all between them doesn’t make for an easy eating experience. Oftentimes, those excess toppings just hide how mediocre the chicken actually tastes.

Bossy Beulah’s aims to change that. With their two new locations in South End and Fort Mill they continue to bring Charlotte a “no-nonsense” style of chicken sandwich. Their signature sandwich, The Beaut, features a fried chicken

breast topped with Duke’s Mayo and pickles, all served between a bun sourced from Copain Bakery & Provisions. This Charlotte bakery is renowned for their Boulangeriestyle bread, and it supplies all of Bossy Beulah’s sandwich buns. Bossy Beulah's also sells the hot thighs sandwich, which comes with fried chicken thighs, Zack’s Hot Sauce, and the same fixings as The Beaut. Then there's the Bossy Bites — perfectly cooked and seasoned with peppery goodness, and the chicken wings (top 5 in town) for those craving something off the bun. Their sides, just three choices total, follow the same nononsense mentality. Patrons can order fries, Iredell slaw, or a salad. Hand pies, cookies, and soft serve round out the dessert options. The restaurant’s simple yet tasty ingredients and menu offerings make the chicken the real star of the show—something that isn’t always the case with other chicken sandwiches. Rouge chickens naturally with plenty of space and sunlight. Their birds are never given antibiotics, hormone enhancements, or other additives, either. This makes for healthier chickens, which in turn makes for tastier and more tender meat for Bossy Beulah’s chicken sandwiches.

Those looking to try out one of their sandwiches for themselves can bring a few friends to South End and stop by their new chicken shack. With an expansive indoor dining space that holds nearly 150 people and an outdoor patio that holds nearly 80, the restaurant has plenty of room for newcomers. Patrons can even go to the walk-up window and order without going inside. In addition to their South End and Freedom Drive locations, Bossy Beulah’s also has a chicken shack in Winston-Salem, NC and another one that just opened up in Fort Mill, SC. CLT FOODIE ADVENTURES

Eating our way through the Queen City one neighborhood at a time.

Feeling hungry? Charlotte has long been touted as an up-and-coming foodie destination. Every year it seems that countless fresh and inventive restaurants have emerged, diversifying the Queen City’s palate. While we love to see and taste the new flavors of Charlotte, we still have our tried and true spots we find ourselves visiting time and time again. Inspired by the new and the old, we decided to create a custom food crawl for each of our favorite Charlotte neighborhoods. No matter what flavors you're drawn to, or what neighborhood you reside in, there’s a little something for everyone!

South End’s Breakfast Crawl

Charlotte’s fastest growing, trendiest neighborhood has more delicious dining establishments per block than cracks in the sidewalk. But, for this crawl, we've got breakfast in mind! Bring your brain back into the land of the living with an espresso-based beverage from Not Just Coffee at Atherton Mill, conveniently located right next to the light rail. Walk or scoot four blocks to Early Girl Eatery, a welcoming breakfast/lunch kitchen that dishes out heaping plates of breakfast classics that give all of the warm and fuzzies. Wash down your breakfast and counteract your caffeine with mimosas at Trolley Barn. Finally, top off your brunch with a donut from Pepperbox Donuts.

Plaza Midwood’s Brunch Crawl

Where Charlotte neighborhoods are concerned, Plaza Midwood is like an eldest sibling— effortlessly cool in an established, grungy-yet-still-chic kind of way—with a restaurant scene as varied as its personality. But first, coffee. Get your gears turning with a cup of joe from Giddy Goat. Zada Jane's will always have

a wait to be seated for weekend brunch. We recommend adding your name to the waitlist before you head to Giddy Goat, which is only a few doors down. Ultimately, you’ll discover breakfast at Zada Jane’s is worth the wait, and there’s a reason why this restaurant has survived in a neighborhood that has seen so much turnover in the past ten years. Directly across the street from Zada Jane's you’ll find The Workman’s Friend, an Irish pub with a whole lot of personality. It’s one of the few spots in Charlotte where you can get a traditional Irish breakfast, complete with rashers, sausage, black and white pudding, mushrooms, Batchelors baked beans, tomato, and toast. Wander up Central to Milkbread, and order a milkbread donut. Unwrap your donut. Take a bite. Change your life. As a final flourish, detour to Legion Brewing and sample a beer-mosa. If, by some miracle, you are still hungry, nibble on some of Legion’s brunch offerings.

SouthPark’s Italian Everything Crawl

Just six miles outside of Uptown you’ll find SouthPark, an effortlessly upscale neighborhood with great shopping and even greater eats. If you’re in SouthPark, chances are you’re shopping. Every seasoned shopper knows they need a well balanced breakfast before hitting the sales racks. Start your day off right with an Italian-American brunch at Little Mama’s. Complete your meal with a shot of espresso or treat yourself to an espresso martini—because, why not? It's brunch, after all! After a few hours wandering the SouthPark mall make your way over to Rooster's for delicious food and then Copain for delectble pastries! Or if you feel like Italian, The Jimmy’s lunch menu is a curated array of Italian/French small plates, pastas, pizzas, and paninis—perfect for refueling. Did you get all your shopping in?

Good! Now it’s finally time to wine and dine. Head over to the art-centric Peppervine and please, dress to impress. Peppervine offers locally sourced, progressive small plates, craft cocktails, and a diverse selection of wine. If, after all that, you’re craving something sweet, stop by Toscana for a classic Italian dessert.

Dilworth Vino Lovers Crawl

Despite its close proximity to the aforementioned bustling South End neighborhood, Dilworth is a quiet, residential area best known for its walkability, historic houses, and most importantly, wine bars. Craving a little Vitamin D? Mosey on over to the Dilworth Tasting Room. A crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc and some sunshine is in order. Not only do they offer a wide selection of wines, cocktails, and small plates, they have one of Charlotte’s most sought after outdoor patios. Now make your way over to Mere’s for some next-level charcuterie boards. Mere’s sources their wine and cheese from all over the world, giving you a uniquely global experience right in the heart of Dilworth. Less than half a mile down the road, you’ll find Foxcroft Wine Company. Finish here with a delicious dinner of Roasted Salmon, Grilled Strip Steak, and Seared Scallops. Ask your server for recommendations on wine pairings to elevate your meal. The Wine Loft and Vibe Cafe and Wine Bar are great options to add-on to your vino lovers crawl too!

If you are looking to be transported to the streets of Paris or Provence, France, look no further than Renaissance Pâtisserie. Located in the Speciality Shops of Southpark, Renaissance Pâtisserie is Charlotte's premier destination for French ambiance and flavors. Relax on the patio with a Kir Royale cocktail or take home one of our delicious entrees, breads, soups, danishes or pastries!

NoDa’s “Late Night Nosh” Crawl

For decades, NoDa has been solidifying its status as Charlotte’s artsy neighborhood, and a small but mighty cadre of eateries with neighborhood vibes have supported the concert-goers and gallery hoppers that NoDa attracts.

Lean into the evening with an adventurous pour at Bar a Vins, where the winetenders are inclined to introduce you to libations that are as surprising as they are delicious. Mosey a few doors down to Ever Andalo, which objectively serves the best Italian food in the Queen City, for entrees.

For dessert, head to Haberdish and lose yourself in apple hand pie, brown butter pound cake, or timeless banana pudding.

Next door, settle in for a nightcap from Goodyear House, enjoyed on their dreamy outdoor patio.

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, stop by Idlewild, a craft cocktail bar with no menu. Simply tell the bartender what you like in terms of a flavor profile and they’ll whip up a completely customized drink just for you.

If you still have gas in the tank, head back up the street to Jackbeagles, where you may work up an appetite after dancing to live music, and crave the neighborhood’s longtime comfort food and perfect midnight nosh: mac ‘n cheese.

One staple of the menu is the hamachi sashimi. Here, it’s plated with mirin (a type of rice wine similar to sake), sweet Asian pear, and a little bite from turmeric.

Learn how to create a stunning outside space with Phil Costantini from G&G Landscape Solutions. ELEVATED

WWith over 31 years of experience, G&G Landscape Solutions is a company based in Charlotte, North Carolina that provides a wide range of landscaping services to its customers. The team tackles both residential and commercial projects, and their services include hardscaping, lawn maintenance, installing custom outdoor lighting, grading areas to improve drainage, and the installation of irrigation systems.

Phil Costantini, the Vice President of Sales for G&G Landscape Solutions, describes what the company offers and how they can make a larger impact to their customers than just with their landscaping services.

Will you walk us through the process of landscaping and design from the time the client contacts you to the time of completion?

We start off with a 20-minute phone consultation with the client and then schedule a complimentary onsite consultation with our outdoor living consultant.

We perform the design and work with the client till they are

happy with the final design.

We then provide a nicely designed formal proposal. After the agreement is signed, we schedule a walk through with the client and our outdoor living consultant as well as the project manager where we introduce the PM to the client and walk and talk through the project. The client will then have access to the project manager for installation.

Once the project is complete, the PM will walk with the client to make sure they are happy with everything. In a few weeks, the outdoor living consultant will schedule a meeting with the client and deliver a money tree gift for them and take a few photos of the project and make sure the client is 100% satisfied.

From a client’s perspective, how should he or she know when it’s time to look into landscape design?

The best time to think about landscape design is now! Whether considering a new home purchase, or reimagining an existing property, clients should recognize that a well-designed landscape is every bit as important to the value and enjoyment of

their home as a beautiful kitchen or solidly built roof.

What should someone know before deciding to design their yard/space?

We always ask clients two questions: Question 1 is, how do you see yourself using or enjoying the space? If you enjoy being outdoors often, whether grilling, entertaining, or working on your short game, the best design solution will probably look different for you than for someone who prefers to enjoy looking out at their space from a screened-in porch. Question 2 is, what level of investment are you willing to make to reimagine your space?

What has been your biggest landscape design success story?

We don’t have a single biggest success story. Any opportunity where

we can use what we know to help a client solve a problem or realize their vision is a success story. Fortunately, we have more than one and a lot of our clients are famous, and we do not share our high profile clients names. Let’s just say NFL, Nascar, NBA and MLS are a lot of our clients.

What does G&G offer that is unique?

Our process from beginning to end, and over 31 years of experience. Additionally, we will only use high end materials, and we are a turnkey solution from design to installation to maintaining after the install. Our people are what really is unique, as they care for the projects as if they are their own.

FORM AND FUNCTION

Watershed Builders is a veteran-owned General Contractor focused on helping customers create a home they love across some of the most desirable areas in the greater Charlotte area.

With this South Charlotte home, Watershed was able to increase the use of functional space for the homeowners. Natalie Tyler, of Tyler Interiors, completed the interior design. Because this was a “full custom project within a tight floor plan, from start to finish thorough communication within all

collaborators to ensure all details were counted for” was one of the most important parts of this project, owner Dominick Thompson shares.

Once the team was done, the new layout and cased opening joined the kitchen and dining room. The custom cabinets include carefully thought out interior accessories that help maximize functional storage. The cabinetry and millwork is from Sean Carlin Designs and the tile is Harkey Tile & Stone.

MAXIMIZING VIEWS

Jenny Pippin, FAIBD, CPBD is the founder and owner of Pippin Home Designs, based in Mooresville, NC. She has an impressive resume as an award-winning Residential Design Specialist for 38 years. Jenny specializes in luxury homes tailor-designed to each unique client, all while maximizing the views available on each unique property.

Her flare is on full display with this multilevel Lake Norman home built by Chris Strom of Strom Construction.

Jenny tells us that the primary goal was to create a family-oriented home designed for maximum lakefront

fun. The views were, naturally, a main priority as was incorporating lots of natural daylight throughout the entire home. This was made possible by orienting the home to the longest channel view of the lake, as opposed to the more traditional way of orienting toward the street.

An abundance of indoor/outdoor connectivity on both levels enhances the views while providing lakeside entertaining spaces for all, and the creative floor plan managed to fit all of the family’s desires. — info

This project from Karen Kettler Design was completed in August of 2022 at The Point in Mooresville. The guiding design principle was to create a relaxing lakefront vacation home for friends, family and weekly rentals on Airbnb.

Karen shares that “the ‘major blue’ accents from Sherwin Williams was the inspiration that represents the lake views. It reminds you to relax and live the lake life for as long as you can stay.”

The new living room and kitchen is the original footprint of the cottage with upgraded windows for spectacular views of the lake, a fireplace for cozy gatherings and LVL flooring to make it lake and pet-friendly. Additionally, two bedrooms and two baths were added to the back of the cottage for guests.

The builder was Burke Developer, Inc., the cabinetry is Touchstone Fine Cabinetry, tile from Harkey Tile and Stone, and countertops from Marble & Stone Shop.

COTSWOLD CLASS

Husband and wife duo John and Jenna Jackovich of Grande Custom Builders construct more than just houses — they craft homes. Together, they lay the foundations for lifelong memories. One of their most recent projects, a striking home in Cotswold, bursts with the character, comfort, and class that Grande Custom Builders embodies.

This newly-built 4541-square-foot home masterfully merges sophistication and functionality, making it perfectly suited for modern families. Cool neutral colors bring about a soothing and elegant atmosphere. Beautiful wood tones create a sense of continuity throughout the home, spanning all the way from the kitchen to the dining space, and into several of the home’s four bedrooms. In the main bedroom, the bluish gray hues of the furnishing mingles with the light walls as subtle

pops of gold details breathe an air of sophistication into the already graceful room. The chic golden accents are not just limited to the bedroom — they make a beautiful statement in the spacious kitchen and the home’s light fixtures. These fixtures from Arteriors bring a lovely luminescence on their own, but the home also has an abundance of natural light.

The warming sunshine makes its way into the home through impressive, tall Sierra Pacific windows. While they give the home an incredible vibrance, and also provide a great view of the extremely inviting, snug space outdoors. The outdoor seating area offers covered comfort as well as warmth from the wood burning fireplace, all whilst overlooking the shimmering pool. The steps from this area lead to an accentuated walkway which travels across the manicured yard and past a cozy spot

to relax by the pool, until it arrives at the 668-square-foot coach house. This bonus space is equipped with one bedroom and two bathrooms, and can function in a wide variety of manners. Whether it be a garage, a guest house, a game room, or spa, this bonus home only further demonstrates the possibilities offered by such an expansive outdoor space. It acts as a continuation of the home itself, merging the inside and outside to provide a captivating space. As Jenna emphasizes, “the house screams outdoor living — an essential component for families.”

The thoughtful functionality of the home is yet another promising aspect for families. One incredibly unique facet of the home is its dashing scullery, which offers more space to clean, prep, and store kitchen necessities. In addition to being incredibly useful, it brings a lively twist to the home.

Jenna indicates how “the slate blue cabinets and metallic bronze tile in the scullery” help achieve “a needed contrast to the rest of the house.” This addition embodies both style and substance while giving families extra storage and organization. Even aspects such as the home’s open floor plan add functionality, as it allows loved ones to stay connected throughout the space.

Whether it be outdoors or inside, Grande Custom Builders have an incredible talent in crafting spaces that manage to be comfortable, practical, and of course, endearing. This Cotswold home is just one of many that so perfectly balances luxury and leisure.

UPSTATE SOPHISTICATION

Greenville’s newest boutique hotel, Hotel Hartness, opens to fanfare.

If you’re from Greenville, South Carolina, you’ve likely heard of the Hartness family. Over many decades, they’ve had a profound effect on the area, starting with their knack for visionary pursuits. In 1940, Tom Hartness bought bottling rights to Pepsi-Cola, touching off a business that would go on to secure around 100 patents and partner with a handful of Fortune 500 companies. Tom’s son, Pat, later took the helm of the family business,

while also accumulating almost 500 acres of property east of Greenville. That property, once the family’s beloved home, is now the site of a mixed-use development that includes Hotel Hartness, a boutique hotel that oozes grandeur and sophistication, and a private community set against a backdrop of expansive fields, ponds, walking trails, and beautiful old trees. In fact, you’ll find Pat living in the Hartness community amongst neighbors today.

Partially located in the French-revival-style home that was originally built by and housed the family, Hotel Hartness seamlessly merges timeless elegance and modern sophistication to create an unforgettable guest experience.

About 15 minutes outside of downtown Greenville, you can expect plush bedding and decadently soft bathrobes in each of the hotel’s 69 suites, as well as modern comforts like speedy free wifi and smart TVs. Many of the upgraded rooms have walk-in showers with soaking tubs, and some offer terraces from which guests can observe the beauty of the surrounding 180-acre nature preserve.

Guests can exit the main building and amble along a short, shaded walkway to Spa H, where six treatment rooms promise rejuvenation through a menu of facials, massages, and body services. Spa H uses several local product lines, and also offers rooms in the spa that are available to guests to book. The large rooms, with terraces and soaking tubs, are ideal for brides, wedding parties, or people looking to book a particularly special and relaxing escape. Indeed, just a trip to Spa H’s relaxation room is enough to refresh any visitor: the space provides access to a peaceful garden and scenic views of the nature preserve.

Greenville offers stiff culinary competition, but Hotel Hartness’ on site food and beverage establishments are poised to meet the city’s high standards. Patterson Kitchen + Bar dishes out locally and regionally inspired dishes in a modern but elegant setting. With a wraparound porch abutting a treelined pond, the restaurant’s outdoor dining space is just as breathtaking as its interior. We booked an indoor table that sat just on the edge of the window walls, providing what was truly the best of both worlds.

GM Juan Nieto guaranteed a flawless hospitality experience, and we recommend ordering any of the seafood dishes. They change often, and seasonally, so be sure to ask the staff for more tailored recommendations.

Inside the main area of the hotel, The Captain offers a cozier setting characterized by a bar lined with reclaimed barn wood. Light bites, a large selection of wines by the glass, and craft cocktails comprise the menu, which can be enjoyed indoors as well as fireside in the outdoor courtyard. This is the spot to grab a bite or a drink before retiring to your room.

If the food, spa, and luxury rooms aren’t enough to seal the deal, you can also enjoy a large pool overlooking the lake, a fitness center, and a full breakfast (included in your stay) at

The Manor in the main part of the hotel. Another of our favorite parts was simply walking the property. Trails and sidewalks abound, so you can grab a bike or hit the ground on foot to see more of this stunning property with views of the Blue Ridge.

Hotel Hartness is the perfect setting not only for a romantic getaway and exploration of the delightfully funky city of Greenville, but also for weddings and events. With 13,000 square feet of meeting, conference, and gathering space, spread across 18 distinctive rooms, there’s a place to accommodate every type of event. A blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, as well as a ballroom that can accommodate up to 300 people, provide the perfect setting for a unique weekend among friends, family, or coworkers.

The legacy that enabled the creation of Hotel Hartness and the preservation of its beautiful setting will live on in this elegant weekend destination, which, if the quality of the guest experience is any indication, is certain to endure for generations to come.

GREENVILLE CHARM

Discover the vibrant heart of the Upstate.

Resting at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina sits the city of Greenville. With its picturesque scenery and charming city attractions, Greenville has emerged as a hidden gem, balancing the Upstate beauty with a gorgeous urban environment. Greenville features many activities and events throughout the year that bring the already flourishing city to life, making it an excellent place for new visitors and permanent residents to explore and find something enticing. It’s also a destination for foodies, with its diverse array of culinary offerings and thriving local farming scene.

Come along as we delve into some ways to make the most of your Greenville experience.

THE OUTDOORS

Greenville brings the lush countryside right into the city with its many outdoor activities and locations. Visit the awardwinning Falls Park, which has trails and gardens throughout to explore, as well as the mesmerizing Liberty Bridge situated in the center of Falls Park over the Reedy River. It’s a nationally acclaimed green space with a spectacular bridge that allows unobstructed views of the Reedy River Falls. The Liberty Bridge — a 345-foot, curved bridge held in the air by a single suspension cable – is the only one of its kind in the United States.

Magnolia Park is another great location for any outing. The 800,000 sq. ft. park is one of Greenville’s largest commerce and entertainment destinations.

Unity Park, Greenville's newest 60-acre park, is located on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 22-mile multi-use trail beloved for its biking offerings. More than 750,000 locals and visitors ride the trail each year. The park was created to pay homage to the area's past “while planning for a more inclusive future.” The urban green space includes playgrounds, pedestrian bridges, splash

pads, walking trails, a visitor center, a baseball field, basketball courts and ample green space.

The Cleveland Park in Greenville is another great location for outdoor activities, including biking, picnics, or even sporting events. The 122-acre park also features the Rock Quarry Garden and the Greenville Zoo, supplying a wide range of activities for any age.

THE CITY

The West End Historic District of Greenville also has a lot to offer. Less than two miles from Main Street, The Village of West Greenville has been deemed the arts and entertainment center of the upstate. There are a seemingly infinite number of ventures to participate in. Greenville sports four entertainment plazas, some used for professional sporting events like the Fluor Field or Bon Secours Wellness Center. In contrast, others, like the Greenville Convention Center, are used for special entertainment events.

Within downtown Greenville, you will find a multitude of museums ranging in categories of content, from historic museums like the Military History Center of the Carolinas, to art museums like the Center for Creative Arts. Downtown Greenville is easily one of the most diverse areas for activities and attractions for any interest.

Currently more than 100 works of art are featured as part of Greenville, South Carolina’s Arts in Public Places initiative. An “Orbital Trio” serves as the anchor of North Main Street downtown at NOMA Square, while “Nexus of Light” anchors the corner of South Main Street and Augusta St. The red steel “Untitled 2002-2003” sculpture (referred to by many residents as Gumby) winds up in the background of almost every iconic photo taken in Greenville and Dale Chihuly’s "Rose Crystal Tower" sits at the other end of Falls Park.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

There are also a lot of shops and markets throughout the city and surrounding area. From May to October, the TD Saturday Market on Main Street houses over 75 vendors, from farmers to crafters, providing fresh local goods and unique, high-quality crafts.

From March to August, Piedmont Natural Gas Downtown Alive kicks off the weekend every Thursday night with free live music at NOMA Square on Main Street for a literal party in the streets, with food trucks, local brews and tunes. The city also hosts First Fridays Gallery Crawl, the Upstate Shakespeare Festival, and two particularly sought after events: Euphoria, a highly-anticipated food, wine and music festival held every September and Fall for Greenville festival weekend. Fall for Greenville takes place on Main Street with local chefs and James Beard nominated chefs alike serving up their signature dishes and free performances from more than 70 bands.

EAT & STAY

Our favorite hotels are easy choices: If you’re looking to stay downtown, The AC Hotel and newcomer Grand Bohemian Greenville are unbeatable. For a more secluded experience, stay roughly 15 minutes from downtown at the newly opened Hotel Hartness.

For a nice dinner, try Rick Erwin's West End Grill. It’s downtown Greenville’s original upscale steakhouse. With scenic views of the falls, Grand Bohemian’s Between the Trees serves modern lodge cuisine, seasonally influenced and classically prepared.

We also recommend French Laundry alum Drew Erickson's modern American eatery Camp, Husk BBQ, Six & Twenty Distillery, and Southern Side Brewing Co.

Gilde’s first brewery outside of Germany offers Charlotte an authentic bierhaus atmosphere, complete with a robust menu of German cuisine and beer. For a true taste of their history, make sure to request the traditional Hanoverian Luttje Lage—a beer plus a shot.

OSTERIA LUCA

Located in the heart of Uptown, Aria Tuscan Grill brings the best of Italy to Charlotte. Rooted in the flavors of Tuscany, Aria's menu focuses on modern variations of the classics. House made pasta, braised meats, hand tossed pizza, Aria's recipes and its atmosphere celebrate Tuscan cuisine.

Aria is a collaboration between owner Pierre Bader, Managing Partner Briana Cohen and Executive Chef Alex Piatt, first opening its doors in 2010. Over the years Aria has flourished, evolving into one of Charlotte’s most beloved Italian establishments.

Executive Chef Alex Piatt ensures that

the menu stays true to the Italian palate. Carbonara, Bolognese, Osso Buco, Roasted Branzino, even the perfect Pizza Rosso with every detail of it curated down to the house made fennel sausage nestled in it's red sauce. Piatt's menu changes seasonally, centered on simple flavors and locally sourced ingredients. Match that alongside a wine program featuring Italy's best producers, a specialty negroni list plus craft cocktails, let's just say you're set!

Aria Tuscan Grill is open Tuesday-Saturday, 5-10pm, serving food and drinks in a warm, relaxing atmosphere abuzz with that Uptown energy.

TUSCAN GRILL

Cicchetti, pronounced “chee-KEH-tee,” translates to small plates, Venice's answer to Spanish tapas. The Uptown wine bar, or bacaro, is the sister restaurant to Aria Tuscan Grill, Pierre Bader's flagship Italian Concept co-created with Managing Partner Briana Cohen. Cicchetti originally opened its doors in 2020, re-opening post pandemic with a relaxed vibe to include a new interior doorway linking the two concepts — restaurant hopping could not be any easier!

Cicchetti’s menu is all about food for the table and sharing, offering a variety of small plates, signature polpette (meatballs), build-your-own charcuterie boards, fresh oysters and bruschetta. While they stay true to the bacaro concept, the wine bar also offers proteins for the table, really

encouraging the concept of gathering and sharing, as they do in Italy.

When it comes to wine, Beverage Director & General Manager Trevor Wood has curated an incredible selection from all over the world. After all, is there a better accompaniment to meat and cheese? We don’t think so. Not a wino? Don't worry. They also offer cocktails on draft and an espresso martini that's to die for featuring local Bitty & Beaus Cold Brew.

If you’re looking for a caffeine fix to refuel for a night on the town (you’re in Uptown afterall!) Cicchetti also offers classic Italian espressos, macchiatos, cafe con panna, and more.

Cicchetti is open 5 days a week from 5pm - 10 pm.

Uptown Charlotte

Ken

and Tricia Martino are the husband and wife co-owners of Osteria LuCa, Charlotte’s new Italian restaurant in the Park Road Shopping Center. The restaurant opened in January of 2020 and is the Martinos’ second Charlotte venture, following the TRUE Crafted Pizza in Ballantyne. The star attraction of the menu at Osteria LuCa, a stylish but still family-friendly spot, is the woodfired pizza selection. Available with red or white bases, Oste-

ria LuCa pizzas feature innovative toppings and sophisticated cheeses. The menu also includes an expansive appetizer list, and, of course, no Italian restaurant is complete without a selection of pasta dishes. At Osteria LuCa, options include ricotta ravioli, pappardelle bolognese, and cavatelli with lamb sausage and rabe. The wine list is entirely Italian, featuring small production bottles, and both traditional Italian and modern American cocktails are also available.

is an intimate, full sensory restaurant experience featuring themed 10 and 14-course tasting menus created by James Beard Awards Finalist, Executive Chef, and Owner Sam Hart. Designed to evoke emotion throughout the dining experience by utilizing sound, taste, and art as a vehicle, the menus rotate quarterly and are driven by sense-based storylines such as music, modern art, and mental health.

The restaurant is purposefully designed to mimic a blank canvas and features muted concrete floors and countertops that can easily be transformed to fit the rotating menus, tableware, and art that accompany each quarterly theme. Once seated, guests will experience meticulously coursed out dishes and wine pairings presented by Hart and his team.
