It’s the little things in life. “When I was a child, I experienced a mouth injury that left my front tooth discolored. Since that accident, I have been hiding or editing my smile, afraid to show the discoloration. This year, I decided it was time to make a change and to make my smile a priority. After my first visit with Dr. Tesmer at Ballantyne Dentistry, I knew I had made the right decision. I immediately felt at home and knew that the entire team there cared about me. Their priority was to help me feel and look my best. We decided that four veneers were exactly what I needed to enhance my smile. I can’t explain how much this change has impacted my confidence! I am forever grateful that I took this step for myself. I genuinely can’t stop smiling!” — Haley Hendel, Charlotte Fitness Enthusiast @_haleyhendel

CULTURE

T

Tony Hernandez remains locked in his studio. Each morning he puts on the same clothes, and each day he eats the same meals. The objective is to limit any distractions — even one as simple as which shirt to wear on a day when he will see no one, do nothing other than create. In doing so, Hernandez feels he is able to preserve the mental space necessary to immerse himself in his artistic work until he is able to bring his vision to life. This creative process taps into the same level of obsessive dedication that was the catalyst for Hernandez’s transition to a full-time career as an artist in the spring of 1988. “I remember I was in Little Five Points in Atlanta, GA the day I made this decision,” says Hernandez. “I quit my job as a project manager at a construction company. Painting had become necessary for my existence. I needed time to ideate and conceptualize and I could not work and pursue my art part time.”

32 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

Within two years of that decision, Hernandez dialed in to the same medium that he uses today — a blend of graphite pencils, water pens, ink, colored pencils, gouache, beeswax, and damar resin. “I start the painting by drawing the image on a birch wood panel with graphite pencils,” explains Hernandez. “This is when I figure out how to paint the painting and it is the most painstaking part of the process.” Next, Hernandez coats the panel with beeswax and damar resin, and then he begins to paint with oil crayons. As he does so, he uses a blowtorch to raise the heat of the paint to a temperature at which it will adhere to the birch wood panel. Between each application of paint and emulsion, Hernandez scrapes the surface of his work, removing any ridges of paint to produce an even surface. After allowing at least a week for the painting to dry, Hernandez adds a final layer of resin with extreme care; it’s

all too easy to smear the image with this application if a high level of patience and control is not applied. The result is often a work that makes ample use of symbolism that gestures at a feeling or an emotion intended by the artist. Recent series have been composed of pieces that are uncluttered and seemingly simple, yet evocative nevertheless. Hernandez’s pieces often feature children as the primary subjects, which the artist cites as a primary source of inspiration. Hernandez’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the globe and in a number of prominent cities in the U.S., most notably New York, San Francisco, Miami, Atlanta, and New Orleans. His pieces are part of a number of private and public collections, including in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and in The Bronx Museum of the Arts. Tony also had some major collaborations in 2023, including Ballard designs/QVC, Magnolia Network, and Kips Bay Showhouse in Palm Beach. Locally, his work can be found at Hidell Brooks Gallery in SouthEnd. Hernandez also works on commission and can be contacted through his website. info tonyhernandezstudios.com @tonyhernandezstudios

MYERS PARK’S NEWEST ART HUB The George Gallery showcases contemporary and modern art. words SUNNY HUBLER / photos JAME Y PRICE

The George Gallery is Myers Park’s newest art destination. First established in Charleston in 2013, the gallery expanded to include a second location in Charlotte late last year. The gallery is run by Anne Siegfried in Charleston and Lucy Graham-Fleishman in Charlotte. In both locations, Anne and Lucy’s aim is to represent contemporary and modern American and European artists inspired by the post-war oeuvre. Anne Siegfried studied Art History in college and her first job out of school was at a gallery on Martha's Vineyard. “I loved the work, but I hated the cold and moved to Charleston in 2002,” Anne explains. “I worked at galleries in Charleston that were more traditional, mostly focused on landscape painting. In the early 2010's I started to see a significant change in the art market in Charleston. People were moving to the city from more diverse backgrounds, and their wants and needs were different. I saw an opening in the market for a gallery that specialized in abstract and non-objective painting.” With that in the air, Anne says she finally felt comfortable opening the doors to a gallery that solely focused on work in-

spired by the post-war period in Charleston. Several years later, in November of 2022, Lucy and Anne opened their Charlotte location. “We chose Charlotte because it checked all the boxes,” the women explain. “We already had a small client base due to the close proximity it has to Charleston. It's the fourth largest growing city in the US so it makes sense to go where the people are. There are already some great galleries in Charlotte, and we think there is room for the artists that we are bringing to the city.” Today, Lucy and Anne typically only add one or two artists to their roster per year. They balance two competing needs: finding artists whose work has a unique voice and finding art they believe clients will respond to. “We have to anticipate what our clients are looking for even before they see it themselves,” Anne says. George Gallery is dedicated to helping individuals, designers, and businesses alike find the right artwork for every type of space.

MAKING FASHION FUNCTIONAL

Brooke Knaus’s product, the Tucky, is changing the game for practical and fun fashion. words ALLY MASTRONE portraits JAMEY PRICE product photos courtesy TUCKY

When it comes to fashion, functionality is a must— especially for business owner Brooke Knaus. Following the birth of her second child, Knaus was searching for ways to reconnect with her body. In her attempts to style her outfits in a way that mimicked the idea of an hourglass figure post pregnancy, Knaus tried her hand at online hacks; primarily, tucking her top into her bra to achieve the look of a crop top. But, for Knaus, these hacks could never withstand movement throughout the day and would, inevitably, come untucked. Determined to create the solution for herself, Knaus designed and founded Tucky. The Tucky is a comfortable elastic belt that is designed to tuck your tops into and introduce an upgraded level of versatility to your wardrobe. “You can turn any of your tops into crop tops, layer sweaters over dresses to wear your summer dresses into fall and winter or get the tucked in look without adding bulk to your waistband,” Knaus explains. “Owning a Tucky is the definition of working smarter, not harder.”

42 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

Although Knaus did not always plan to be a business owner, her passion for Tucky gave her the confidence to step into the world of entrepreneurship. She always had an interest in going beyond the aesthetics of fashion and focusing on how the clothing itself fits. From a young age Knaus was altering her clothing to find her individual needs perfectly. Once, she even used a stapler as a makeshift hem for her too long jeans. “I liked cutting up my clothes, taking the sleeves off, making circle skirts out of old t-shirts, etc. But I never really wanted to design clothing. I think the fun of opening up my closet and playing with the possibilities of what could be was where the joy was.” Tucky aims to help customers explore the possibilities of their closet with one small purchase. By allowing flexibility between how clothing can be styled, Tucky fulfills Knaus’s mission of creating a product that allows people to look and feel their best in what they wear.

CULTURE Following the launch of Tucky in 2022, Knaus applied to be on Shark Tank, the television series, to further pitch her product. After a long application process, Knaus was invited to star in the show in May of 2023. “I've had only incredible experiences with every single person related to Shark Tank,” Knaus states. “They are champions of small business owners and really do the most to make sure an entrepreneur has the most positive experience possible.” As her business continues to grow and evolve following her experience on Shark Tank, Knaus’s innovation is not slowing down, as she has expanded her offerings of products beyond just the Tucky belt. The product selection now includes Ta-Da! Breast Lift Tape, a specialized designed crop top in a variety of colors, and the Stitchy, an instant sewing gun. Through hard work and creativity, Knaus was able to fill the hole in the market she discovered while doing what so many of us resort to: scrolling through online hacks. The Tucky provides the solution for tucking and cropping tops to enhance and expand every kind of outfit. As a young company led by a passionate and ambitious woman, Tucky’s, and Knaus’s, success has only just begun. info shoptucky.com / @shoptucky

FROM FABRICS TO FOOD The historic Gibson Mill Market in Concord adds even more flavor and fun. words EMILIE WIDARSSON / photos JAMREY PRICE

FOOD & DRINK

T

The 17,000-square-foot Gibson Mill Market in Concord, NC is saturated in history. It was built in 1899 and served as a manufacturing plant with the goal of bringing top-notch yarns and fabrics to the community. Over a century later, Gibson Mill is still defined by its quality even if it has evolved over the years. Today, Gibson Mill Market still provides for its community — now in the form of delicious food and inventive beverages. The market offers a wide range of cuisines, with its latest additions expanding the options even more. Opened in Summer 2023 as part of the Scratch Made Hospitality Group, Barcos Sports & Raw Bar, Churn Buddies, and Kuni’s Kitchen each add exciting flavor profiles to the vendor space. Barcos offers fresh seafood and comfort, complete with its own arcade and boat-inspired cocktails. If you’re in the mood for dessert, Churn Buddies sells ice cream, cakes, and other novelties made from scratch with only the best ingredients. Kuni’s Kitchen brings Japanese cuisine to the market. While the vendor has signature dumplings and bowls, you can also build your own with a range of proteins and toppings to choose from. The Gibson Mill Market also has a selection of cafés, such as Defined Coffee and Luck Factory Games. The menu at Defined Coffee is expansive, ranging from specialty lattes, espressos, and seasonal teas. SAVOR THE SLICE A conversation with BIRD Pizzeria's Kerrel and Nkem Thompson. words L ACHELLE DOUGL AS

Kerrel and Nkem Thompson, the owners of BIRD Pizzeria, have a fresh take on classic comfort food. The Optimist Park location of BIRD Pizzeria, and the pizza itself, are all just as unique as its name. Lately, when it comes to pizza, BIRD is the word, from the talk of the town to making best new restaurant lists, and the praise is deserved. The pizza is truly divine! Now, let's meet Kerrel and Nkem and hear their story of inspiration behind their eatery and the roots from which it came. When did the idea for BIRD Pizzeria come about? The development of BIRD was very organic for us. For years, making pizza at home every Sunday was our ritual. We had begun to consider taking pizza making more seriously right

before COVID happened. It was during quarantine in particular that Kerrel was given the time to ramp up his practice and essentially make pizza every day at home. The pizza became too much for our family to eat so we started sharing it with friends. In October of 2020, we launched BIRD through different pop up events around the city until we opened our permanent location in December of 2021. What is the inspiration behind the name “BIRD Pizzeria”? In high school, Kerrel took a nature studies class and somehow memorized all the North American bird species unintentionally. It's sort of an inside joke, and he’s always pointing out different species with me or our kids when we go out. We know the name is unusual for a pizzeria which is why we felt it would be perfect for ours.

FOOD & DRINK How did you decide to open BIRD in the Optimist Park area? Kerrel is from Cleveland, and I am from Chicago. A huge part of our life was lived in older cities where architecture and history are ingrained in the culture and experience of the cities. In Charlotte, we’ve noticed that many developers seem interested in developing new buildings as opposed to renovating existing ones. When we found this little concrete, two-story building with tons of untouched character, we knew it was special. What are your previous experiences in the restaurant industry? We have nearly none! Kerrel has worked in a restaurant before, solely as a rite of passage to learn skills necessary before launching BIRD. What kind of experience do you strive to give your customers when they visit? Our goal is to make our customers feel comfortable. We aim to create an environment where people can bring their whole family out with them and bond over

FOOD & DRINK a tasty meal. We like to say that BIRD is almost like a dossier that shows what happens when you infuse faith, love, care and devotion into something. We want our customers to feel a part of that, as well as being a place that everyone will enjoy. What do you value the most about the environment of your restaurant? Our environment is designed to be the best fit for our customers, as well as for our team and craftspeople. Its diversity is showcased not just by the people that make up our environment, but by the thought exhibited in everything we do. Is it perfect? Of course not. But it's right. Do you source from any local vendors? Does the menu change seasonally? We have our core menu, featuring a selection of toppings that we have carefully curated. Seasonally, we like to introduce pizzas with flavors highlighting that time of year. We also offer “favorite” pies that we rotate every few weeks, using locally sourced produce when available. info birdpizzeria.com / @birdpizzeria

SANGRIA words SUNNY HUBLER photo JAMEY PRICE

Restaurants in Italy have long focused on the simplicity of their dishes and their ties to the surrounding communities. These values are what has kept them open for generations, and it’s what Osteria LuCa has relied on for its own longevity. Their straightforward approach to good Italian cuisine can even be found in their cocktails, such as the bar team’s spin on a sangria. The “LuCa Sangria,” is made with a bold chianti, a splash of Tito’s vodka, and a mix of both orange juice and cranberry. It’s a beverage that pairs well with any of Osteria’s steak offerings, or their starters. Cheers! info osterialuca.com @osterialucaclt

FUN AND FUNCTIONAL Maggie Crandall breathes new life into Charlotte interior design. words SUNNY HUBLER / photos LAURA SUMRAK

M

Maggie Crandall describes herself as someone with a love of taking a space and transforming it by bringing in new life with her fresh and bright transitional style. Under the umbrella of her five-year-old business, Crandall Haus, she’s able to do just that on a daily basis. “Crandall Haus is driven by a desire to keep design fun and functional; not taking anything in style (or life!) too seriously,” she shares. Along with her design assistant Mollie Zimmer, Maggie is bringing fresh, transitional, bright interiors to homes across Charlotte.

Who helped or inspired you through your journey of creating Crandall Haus and why did you want to open your own business? I come from a line of entrepreneurs so it is in my blood. I have always wanted to have my own business, and am so grateful I get to live out my passion for design each day. I had great experiences that taught me a lot before I moved into opening my own design firm. I spent many years working at Lucy and Company gaining a lot of great knowledge from [owner] Beth Keim, and before that I worked at showrooms which gave me the opportunity to learn many different product lines well.

What inspired you to begin your career in interior design? I've loved design for as long as I can remember. I would rearrange my bedroom on the regular throughout my teens and always loved creating spaces that brought people joy. I went to college for design at Mercyhurst College and have never looked back. Every job I've had since then has been in the design field.

Will you walk us through the process of a renovation or remodeling from the time the client contacts you to the time of completion? We have an initial walkthrough with our clients to get a feel for the project and overall design aesthetic to begin the process. We then run with the overall design portion of the project making the selections and creating design visuals to present to the client

68 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

HOME & DESIGN

based on their needs. We start with the "hard selections" meaning the plumbing, tile, and cabinets. Once those are finalized, we move into the furnishing portion of the design. With most of our projects, we are selecting all new construction finishes, design layouts, and furnishings right down to the vase on the table. What is your process like for clients, and who is your "typical" clientele? Every project has its own unique flow, but we typically meet the clients at the home or at our office to look over plans if it is a new build which is a lot of what we are focused on now. We ask the client to provide us with any visuals they may have, things like past projects we have done, or vision boards, to get a direction. Then we really take it from there. We work with a lot of families here in Charlotte, which we love. It's great to help create a functioning environment for a family that still looks amazing but we have clients from all walks of life! Do you source from / work with any local vendors? Yes! We work with a lot of great local companies like Fine Grit and Morgan Chair. We frequently work with Josh Utsy for any custom furniture we need. info crandall-haus.com / @crandallhaus

CLASSIC MEETS MODERN words SUNNY HUBLER / photo BRIE WILLIAMS

As owner and principal designer at Four Story Interiors, Jess Ebert is shaping homes throughout Charlotte and helping clients achieve their dreams. This living room belongs to a family who bought a traditionalstyle home on Queens Road West in Myers Park in 2022. Jess says that the home owners wanted a fresh, modern home that merged their love of art and design with family heirlooms. “This living room was intended to play double duty, allowing kids on the sofa during the day with the ability to transform into an adults only room in the evening,” Jess explains. To do this, Four Story Interiors played with texture, rich

colors and materials. Jess brought in warmth by painting the trim a rich color and applying grasscloth to the walls, and leaned into the richer, darker elements to ground the space. She then balanced this choice with lighter foundation pieces like the sofa and swivel chairs. The final layer of art and accessories ties it all together for a memorable space. The marble coffee table is Darnell and Company, elk photography was sourced at Abode, the HomeBurlwood side tables are Made Goods, and the ceiling light fixture is Arteriors. The forged iron drink table is from Cotswold Marketplace and the green velvet chair is Global Views.

With offices in Charlotte and Kiawah, Kingswood offers exceptional building services to homeowners in the Carolinas. Owners Peter and Louise Leeke along with the Kingswood team, use their combined talents and over 300 years of collective experience to produce high-caliber homes and worldclass customer service. This stunning nature escape in Kiawah Island is Louise Leeke’s third project with her clients, Greg and Kara Olsen. In addition to their years’ long professional relationship, Peter, Louise, and the entire Kingswood team have supported and been advocates of the HEARTest Yard since it was started in 2012. Just this September, The Greg Olsen Foundation sent a $2.5 million donation to Atrium Health Levine Children's to be used for cardiac care.

Nestled in the Kiawah landscape, the home features large, covered wrap around porches and an elevated main floor. The team balanced classic resort-style laid-back luxury with the Olsens' modern taste. The home is full of neutral finishes, organic textiles, and windows that fill the home with natural light from the lush outdoors. Louise carefully hand-selected the interior finishes with Greg and Kara, and Pursley Dixon served as the architect. Layton Campbell of J. Layton Interiors was responsible for all of the furniture and art in the home. Outside, landscape architect Paul Freeman helped tame the subtropical terrain of the Lowcountry. SERENITY ON BODIE ISLAND

The perfect peaceful beach getaway off the coast of North Carolina. words ALLY MASTRONE / photos JP GRICE

North Carolina is renowned for its gorgeous coastlines that attract thousands of visitors each year, but among the numerous beaches along the coast, there are none quite as picturesque as Bodie Island. A natural peninsula located right off the coast of Roanoke Island, Bodie Island is the perfect place for a secluded beach getaway. Approximately 360 miles away from Charlotte, Bodie Island offers miles of gorgeous beaches and opportunities to disconnect from the busiest of the city and experience the local wildlife. Beyond its gorgeous beaches, Bodie Island is best known for its famous lighthouse, aptly named the Bodie Island Lighthouse. Recognized by its signature black and white stripes, the lighthouse stands at 156 feet tall, and guests can purchase tickets to climb up to the top. Although the view up at the top is certainly worth it, make sure you are prepared to climb the equivalent of a tenstory building. Right behind the lighthouse lies the Bodie Island Nature Trail. This lovely boardwalk trail is only an eighth of a mile long and leads you to an observation deck where you can sit at one of the benches and take in the beautiful marshy surroundings. Along the trail you are likely to encounter various migration birds and water life. All along NC Highway 12, the road that runs through Bodie Island, there are wooden outlook spots, built with the idea of creating a space for people to sit and observe the birds and enjoy the view of the sound. Since Bodie Island is such a secluded strip of the Outer Banks, there are fewer options in terms of food and hotels, but thankfully there are plenty of resources just a short drive away.

88 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

When craving a bite to eat, the town just north of Bodie Island, Nags Head, has got all your dining needs covered. You can stop by Fish Heads Bar and Grill where you can enjoy fresh seafood and beer accompanied by a waterfront view and live music, or enjoy a surf and turf dinner at Owens’ Restaurant, which has been locally owned by the Owens family for 78 years. If you just want to find a place to relax by the water with a quality beer, stop by the Lost Colony Brewery. When looking for a place to stay, there are various beach rental options if you are interested in staying in a house or a condo. Twiddy OBX is a preferred vacation rental company with some of the most amazing properties in the Outer Banks. If you would rather relax at a hotel, you can check out the Oasis Suites Hotel. Right up the road in Nags Head, the Oasis Suites Hotel is a boutique hotel with luxury amenities, and it is only a short drive away from the public beach access and a quick walk to the restaurants in Nags Head. Or you can stay at White Doe Inn, located on Roanoke Island, for a more intimate experience. Though it is a bit further from the beach, the luxury suites and the four-course breakfast make it the perfect place to escape with your travel partner. Often overlooked in favor of more popular beach destinations, Bodie Island remains a hidden gem nestled along the North Carolina coast. Bodie Island offers a perfect sanctuary for visitors to embrace the peacefulness and serenity of nature that should not be left unnoticed. info discoverthecarolinas.com / @discoverthecarolinas

CONSERVATION & COMMUNITY North Carolina Wildlife Federation has been preserving the state’s natural beauty for the past eight decades. words SUNNY HUBLER / photos JP GRICE or JAME Y PRICE

The NCWF welcomes any and everyone who wants to help preserve North Carolina’s beautiful nature. North Carolina’s lush mountains and blissful beaches are home to incredible creatures such as red wolves, Atlantic Sturgeons, West Indian Manatees, and northern flying squirrels – all of which face endangerment. For the past eight decades, the NC Wildlife Federation has made it their mission to protect the state’s impressive biodiversity, pledging to protect both these animals and their homes. The organization was founded in 1945 when professor Ross O. Stevens coordinated with a group of like-minded conservationists, who aimed to better protect the beautiful natural world of North Carolina. This group expanded over the years into what is now known as the North Carolina Wildlife Federation. In the years that followed the NCWF’s founding, the organization established the core principles that still drive its volunteers today. The federation’s members are motivated to educate others about the joys and dazzling sights that can be found within the state’s nature. Their efforts have directly contributed to major environmental and conservation accomplishments, including the establishment of refuge areas and successful opposition to potentially ecologically-devastating legislation. NCWF is also to thank for an astonishing 228,000 pounds of litter removed, as well as the funding of the restoration of many of North Carolina’s endangered species. Those who want to help in these crucial preservation efforts have a wide range of options to contribute. The NCWF welcomes any and everyone through its wide range of exciting programs and activities, such as its Great Outdoors University. The GoU aims to help get kids outdoors and teach them the value of the nature around them. While this program not only promotes teamwork

90 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM

and staying active, it also shows children how important it is to protect the natural world — these efforts lead to adults who are environmentally conscious and keep the state’s wildlife healthy. Children and their families can bond over hikes, bike rides, fishing, and more at no cost. There are many more programs that volunteers can participate in, such as the Prey for the Pack program. This project encourages landowners to implement a habitat project to make their land more viable for the red wolf, a beautiful but endangered species of wolf that can only be found in North Carolina. Schoolyard Habitats merges classroom learning with the outdoors, and WAIT helps conserve biodiversity in commercial areas. There are a vast number of programs to explore, but volunteers can also check the NCWF’s website for a calendar with all upcoming events for the month. These activities range from educational programs, invasive plant removals, cleanups, and so much more. The NCWF also accepts donations and offers paid memberships on its site, from which all proceeds go to wildlife conservation. No matter what or how you contribute, anything is a great help! These communal efforts are vital not only to the survival of North Carolina’s wildlife, but our own as well. The federation contributes to the prevention of harmful shrimping methods, ensuring that a major food source is not over-fished. It also helps conserve the habitat of insects like bees and butterflies, which are essential to the pollination and survival of our own crops. The efforts of the NCWF both ensure our own well-being and give us the opportunity to bond and appreciate North Carolina’s natural beauty. info ncwf.org / @ncwildlifefed

Plus, the fragrant basil that rounds out the flavor profile will leave you feeling refreshed and satisfied. Trust us, this is one pizza that truly lives up to the hype. Brunch At Rosemont Nestled in the charming neighborhood of Elizabeth lies a gem called Rosemont Market and Wine Bar. This lovely spot offers a delightful brunch menu that is certain to please any palate. While many people may flock to indulge in classic brunch dishes like eggs Benedict or pancakes, one of our personal favorites is the grilled cheese and tomato soup. It's the perfect comfort food pairing that warms me up. For those looking for a slightly elevated option, the croque madame is a must-try, with its layers of melted cheese and savory ham topped with a perfectly fried egg. Whether you're a brunch regular or a newcomer, Rosemont Market and Wine Bar is an absolute must-visit for a delectable and satisfying meal.
