I have been a design fan for most of my adult life, and even worked for years at a home magazine in the mountains of North Carolina called High Country Home. So, when we started QCExclusive a decade-plus ago, I knew Home and Design would be a big part of the magazine. Not only does the topic have a section in every single issue, but a couple times a year it is the center of attention. This issue is just that! TThanks to a friendly introduction to the world of oil paints at an early age, Charlotte native artist Andrew Leventis knew he was drawn to painting before entering high school, but it wasn’t until a visit to the Mint Museum in his late teens that he decided he wanted to pursue it as a career. He considers himself lucky that his artist aunt gave him free reign of her oil paint collection whenever he would visit her on the West Coast during his childhood.
Andrew draws inspiration not only from the fleeting nature of life and passage of time captured by Dutch vanitas painters like Ambrosius Bosschaert and Clara Peeters, but contemporary artists as well like Cindy Write.
He paints daily, approaching it like a “normal” job. On days when a painting proves difficult to finish or add to, he muscles through with a favorite podcast or album, being careful to select something that will bring an air of focus and fun.
That consistent focus still maintains room for creativity, of course.
“I would like to have a set plan, but have never been able to find a nice, tidy way of executing a painting,” Andrew explains. “I feel like my approach to each one is a little different, and I try to avoid set formulas that may cause the work to look too formulaic or mechanical.”
Andrew credits a quote from American comedian and author David Sedaris with the next step to his artistic practice: As Sedaris put it, “You have to write every day… I write on Christmas, I write on my birthday, I write every day on my vacation. I can’t imagine not doing it. If you write every day, and you read, you’ll get better. And if you don’t, you won’t.”
Thanks to widely felt support and encouragement from his parents and partner Jim Frakes, Andrew has had a successful and satisfying career that has taken him across the globe,

from London for grad school to an upcoming show in April 2024 in Krakow, Poland. The Krakow show centers around food in art, and Andrew will showcase four of the paintings in his “Fridge Series.” This series, which began during the pandemic, is Andrew’s unique take on the vanitas (still life) style, capturing still life in other parts of the home that were readily available to him during the shut down. He describes the series as emblematic of that time in his life.
Closer to home, Andrew can be found teaching Painting at UNC Charlotte, and showcasing his work in the group show, “Forever Transient” at Central Piedmont Community College in the summer, and in an exhibition called, “Miniature/Monumental” at UNC Charlotte in the fall of 2024.

ClearWater Arts Center & Studios is a staple art resource in Concord.

ClearWater Arts Center & Studios is a unique City of Concord community development initiative. By repurposing a set of old buildings in the Gibson Village Community, an arts hub was born. To date, the city has successfully completed five phases of renovations. Managed by ClearWater Coordinator, Sarah Gay, the campus currently houses 15 artist tenants, including 13 individual artists and two non-profit arts organizations: the Cabarrus Art Guild and the Southern Piedmont
Woodturners. Sarah works alongside Programs Manager Taylor Morris.
It’s been a massive undertaking, one that was begun nearly two decades prior, but the payoff has been equally huge: Classes for the community, free events, residencies for local artists, regular exhibitions, and a newly opened ceramics center.
Here, Sarah shares with us more about ClearWater, her role, and what’s next for the growing center.

What is your background in the art world?
My professional background as an arts administrator started in 2001 when I landed a job for the Denver Art in Public Places program in Colorado, as a Public Art Project Coordinator. Years later, I came to Charlotte in 2008 as Associate VP for Public Art, at the Arts & Science Council. [After some ups and downs] I started with ClearWater in December 2013, and just marked 10 years here. I have absolutely always enjoyed art. I learned painting, drawing, realism and abstraction and majored in figurative sculpture in clay.
What is the importance of having this physical space for the community to see and create art?
I believe that art is an essential part of a rewarding life, and that access to the arts, and ability to learn and practice art in its many forms is an amenity every city should provide. Artists need to be able to socialize with other artists and creative minds, and we aim to produce many more events that assist in doing just that. In addition, ClearWater provides a creative, stimulating place for all people to gather, and it’s been rewarding to watch the delight of our clients.

How do you go about finding resident artists to become a part of ClearWater?
We established a “jury in“ process, which incorporates a questionnaire and evaluation of their artwork and of the direction the artist wants to go in. These applications are only accepted when we have a vacancy, which is seldom. All current tenant artists help participate in the applicant evaluation; to date, we have always admitted new artists on a group-

We have held a smattering of art classes in all sorts of subjects and media over the last 10 years, offered by guest artists, tenant artists, or members of the Cabarrus Art Guild (a tenant since 2019). We also offer multiple two hour Saturday public workshops per month.

Big plans! Big goals! In addition to the programming for the Ceramics Center, I have three major new directions and projects this year: Finding a way to bring musicians in to utilize our indoor and outdoor space, assessing the structural integrity of the last empty space we have yet to renovate into a metalworking space, and to gather an advisory group of metal fabricators and metal artists to help develop a design focus. Additionally, ClearWater’s rear field Is undergoing plans for a sculpture garden in the field adjacent to our buildings. One day, that will serve as a lovely outdoor gathering space for private and public events. Glimpses of these fun plans can be seen in our new “update video“ we’ve just wrapped.

It’s easy to tell ourselves we need self-care, but what does that actually look like in practice? For some, it’s taking the time to do something meditative and relaxing, while for others, it’s taking the time to treat themselves and their bodies in ways that they can’t always do on a daily basis. We sat down with the founder of this firm, Jason E. Taylor, to learn more about what makes him — and his firm — tick.
Are you originally from the Carolinas?
No, I was born in Virginia and raised in Maryland. I visited one weekend before law school and fell in love with Charlotte. I decided this was where I was going to plant my roots both personally and professionally. I was actually dating my ex-wife at the time, who introduced me to Charlotte. We dated, married, and divorced, and I still moved here, no regrets. Eventually my two brothers, sister and parents moved here as well. Charlotte is contagious. I also fell in love in Charlotte to my wife of almost 20 years now.

My father was a lawyer and I respected him immensely. Eager to follow in my father's footsteps, I graduated from college a year early. I took a break from studying and worked construction for a year, then started on my path to go to law school and become a lawyer, just like my father.
Upon graduation and passing the North Carolina Bar exam,
I began practicing law in Charlotte in 1993. I started with a small injury firm and after two years gaining valuable experience, I had a vision for how I intended to develop my practice and in 1995 I partnered with a fellow colleague to open our own firm. I practiced with my law partner for ten years, successfully growing that practice until I felt compelled to go out on my own in 2005 to start the firm I have operated ever since, The Law Offices of Jason E. Taylor.
Over the last thirty years of practicing law in and around Charlotte, I have also been licensed in SC, Tennessee, and Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. I have been on the board of governors for the state trial lawyers' association (NCAJ) as well as three different terms on their executive committee. I have served on the National Board of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) two separate terms, and I am a past president of the Western North Carolina State Chapter. I have been board certified Nationally by the National Board of Trial Advocacy in Civil Trial Law since 2012. I have enjoyed the practice of law; I have enjoyed teaching legal education classes to lawyers and mentoring young lawyers. Beyond those professional accomplishments establishing myself as a prominent litigation attorney, I gain the most satisfaction in helping thousands of injury victims receive the justice they deserve, many times creating lasting friendships in the process, where many clients have become extended family members for myself and our caring legal team.

Why did you decide to start your own firm?
My dad (and mom) always stressed to my siblings and me that you need to "control your destiny" so I really never considered anything else. Plus, my vision never really fit into the typical "law practice mold", I ride motorcycles, smoke cigars and enjoy a good party. My business logo is an alligator riding a motorcycle smoking a cigar, (the litigator) not something most people would associate with a law firm. I take the work seriously but not myself. I don't let the profession define who I am, it is about making the effort in what is important to me, that is how I assess myself. That said, The Litigator also represents my passion to fight for my clients: I am a trial lawyer at heart and will litigate as necessary to achieve justice and optimal results for our clients. That was also why I chose my website to be www.thelitigator.com
What should a curious first-time client know?
A first-time client in need of an injury lawyer should know many of the "badges" like "Top 100" or "top 25" lawyers don’t really mean anything because they are often purchased titles rather than earned. There are probably hundreds if not thousands of lawyers with "top 25" or "top 100". On the other hand, a lawyer who is board certified (state or national) knows his or her stuff, those are earned, merit-based certifications. A lawyer who is "AV" rated by Martindale Hubbell has been practicing law long enough and well enough that his or her peers think they are a good lawyer, now THAT means something.
Also, a first-time client may not want to go to court but they still need to find an experienced trial lawyer that defense attorneys and insurance companies know is ready and willing to successfully try their case if necessary to obtain the compensation their clients deserve. A lawyer who never/rarely goes to court will routinely get low ball offers from insurance companies because they know the lawyer will not go and fight for the client in trial. So, a first-time client needs to consider hiring an experienced trial lawyer.
What are you most passionate about in your business?
Fighting the fight for our clients. We represent injured individuals, and many of them are out of work and have significant medi-
cal expenses. We represent these folks against wealthy large insurance companies, and we have the burden of proof. It is an uphill battle, which to me is exciting. We only get paid if we win, making our services affordable to any client. Seriously, that makes you feel good. You cannot control the outcome of a trial or any fight for that matter, but you can control your effort. As Theodore Roosevelt said. "The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena...who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly.”
What sets your practice apart?
Not to sound redundant but fighting the fight is the first thing that comes to mind; some law firms won't do it, or won't do nearly enough of it. Also, our practice is a team-based approach. We have investigators, case managers, legal assistants and lawyers all working together on the client cases. I am also nationally certified in civil trial law. Very few lawyers have this certification, less than 5%, as it requires extensive trial experience and letters of recommendation from judges and lawyers you have tried cases in front of and against. It also requires a several-hour written examination, and you have to be recertified every five years. I have been recertified multiple times, and I work with the other lawyers in the law firm on all aspects of the client's cases.
In putting our clients first, we go the extra mile and do for them what many other firms will not, even when it may come at a financial cost to us. For example, we negotiate medical bill balances to put more money in our clients’ pockets even though it is not required and does not add any additional money for us. It is just the right thing to do. We handle property damage aspects of the case as a courtesy, for free. We also make sure our fee is not greater than what the clients recover personally, after medical expenses are paid. Sometimes this requires reducing our fee and we do it, and while we don't have to, we really do care. That sets our practice apart!

IIn the summer of 2023, L’Ostrica opened as a chef’s market in Montford that offers an assortment of dips, salads, soups, pastas, entrées, sweets and more for convenient pick up. All items are prepared in house and are either available ready to eat or designed for easy assembly with restaurantquality results. It’s the perfect solution for anyone who isn’t up to the task of preparing a meal after a long day, wants to host guests at their home with a dash of culinary assistance, or perhaps just wants to treat themselves to a delicious meal in the comfort of their own home.
The chef’s market selections heavily incorporate ingredients sourced from local farmers. Additionally, the offerings change with the seasons, with the dual effects of keeping the menu interesting for repeat customers while also enabling year-round freshness and hyperlocality. On Saturdays, L’Ostrica also offers a mini farmer’s market with produce on sale from local farmers as well as demos and tastings from guest vendors.
The concept came from owners Eric Ferguson, former executive chef at Stagioni, and Cat Carter, former food writer and veteran of corporate America. They began their partnership as a catering business, which grew into the idea for L’Ostrica.

The chef’s market is only the beginning for L’Ostrica, which planned a phased opening and activated its final phase — a gourmet tasting experience — in the fall of 2023. The experience consists of eight to ten courses enjoyed over the course of one evening. Each course is powered by seasonal ingredients and may be inspired by a range of culinary influences, such as Italian, Korean, and Japanese cooking informed by French techniques. In addition to optional wine pairings, a selection of cocktails, aperitifs, and digestifs will be available for guests to choose from.
Tasting dinners are available Wednesday through Saturday by reservation only. Additionally, L’Ostrica offers Sunday Suppers, during which an a la carte menu takes the place of the tasting menu. Each Sunday, the menu hinges on a different theme grounded in Ferguson and Carter’s genuine enthusiasm for cooking and hospitality.

YYou don’t have to travel 5000 miles to have the taste and experience of the Western Mediterranean region. Thanks to Chapter 6, Rare Roots Hospitality’s newest restaurant concept, you need only take a trip to South End to experience the refreshing and dauntless plate pairings that are offered.
Chapter 6 combines foods from Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, France and Italy, creating blends that speak to the heart of culture. The restaurant had its grand opening on September 20th of this year, which was a delicious success.
Jon and Kim Dressler, owners of Chapter 6 and the Rare Roots Hospitality group, wanted to bring something more to the table than just the warm hospitality and good food they’re known for.
It’s safe to say they’ve hit the nail on the head with this one, bringing in auras and elevated dishes from around the world.
Chapter 6’s cooking style is 100% scratch kitchen which means everything is made in house by hand and by the chefs. Executive Chef Scott Hollingsworth along with Chef Jonny Cox and Director of Operations Tim Buchanan traveled to Morocco and Spain for some hands-on research to help curate their menu which includes mezze, or appetizer style plates, tapas, and small plate options as well as some large plated options. Menu items such as whipped ricotta, braised lamb neck, roasted cipollini onions and the seafood feast were a few favorites of ours.

Five dollars of every Treatment purchased will be donated to a local charity.
Chapter 6 also offers brunch 11-3 pm on the weekends with a cocktail menu created by Brittney “BK” Kellum of Fin & Fino with the help of Kendon Corbett.

From hiking and fishing to camping and exploring the outdoors, Sylva makes the perfect town for families to enjoy quality time together.
Travel
The drive from Charlotte to Sylva is an easy 3-ish hours. Coming from further away? Asheville Regional Airport will get visitors as close as they can to the town of Sylva. After landing, there are options of either renting a car and doing a 50-minute drive to the location, or taking a bus and getting as near the area as possible.
Activities
Sylva, North Carolina is one of our favorite towns in the Carolinas. It is mainly known for its beautiful location and views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, but the downtown also has so much to offer. If you are planning on visiting in the Spring, the perfect time to travel into town would be when the annual Greening Up The Mountains Festival is hosted. This year, on April 27, the town will close off the historical downtown location to celebrate the arrival of Spring. For the last 26 years, thousands of visitors have gathered in this location to check out the 175 vendor booths that line up in the streets of Sylva. No matter when you visit, you can always enjoy hiking adventures in the mountains, camping trips with the family or walking around downtown exploring the shops. Our favorite shops to visit are Snake Song which is a wonderful plant shop, Dixie & Co, Harry Alter Books, and Black Balsam Outdoors.

Where to eat
During your visit, if you are looking for a good local restaurant, try Lulu’s on Main. With a large variety of food options, this place is a familyfriendly option for your trip. Another place we loved was Dalaya’s. Trust us and ordwer the Khao Soi. For supper try Ilda, a southern Italian restaurant that serves up amazing food. Meatballs Pizzeria has some delicious slices too.
Where to stay
There are several great options in the area but our favorite without a doubt is Outland Chalet & Suites. This stay has everything. It’s close to town but also secluded in nature. The suites are large with comfy king beds, giant tubs under fireplaces, and large porches with epic views. There’s also a lookout area, pond, outdoor fire pit, and clubhouse that guests can take advantage of. We cannot recommend this town or place to stay more and hope you adventure to Sylva soon!

She attended The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she received an MSPH, as well as Parsons The New School for Design in New York. Galloway is adamant about the need for genuine expression—further evident in her various ventures such as Crown Keepers, a nonprofit, and HUE HOUSE, a creative agency, where she serves as Executive Director and Chief Activations Officer, respectively. Blue Ridge Parkway High Country Section
The Blue Ridge Parkway is an incredible route that spans 469 miles through the Appalachian Mountains, connecting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. For us, one of the standout sections is from Linville to Blowing Rock where you can stop to take in Linville Falls, Beacon Heights, Grandfather Mountain, the Linn Cove Viaduct and more. In that stretch is the famed Rough Ridge hike, waiting for you at BRP milepost 302.8. This spot is special because it offers a hiking trail that takes you to an exposed rock outcrop. From there, prepare to be amazed by the panoramic views of the magnificent surrounding mountains.
Alligator River Refuge to See the Bears
The Alligator River Refuge is a popular wildlife refuge along the Outer Banks in Eastern North Carolina. It spans 152,000 acres of land and was established in 1984 to protect the forested wetland species and environment within. While it offers a variety of rich outdoor activities, one of the most popular things to do is explore the natural wildlife inhabiting it. This is one of the best regions in North Carolina to spot the black bear. You can also go on a guided tour through the refuge in an open-air tram. For nature lovers, it is one of the best places to travel to.
Cypress Gardens
The Cypress Gardens is the name given to the 175-acre swamp garden close to downtown Charleston in Moncks Corner. These gardens have become the backdrop for many popular motion pictures, including The Notebook and The Patriot. Here, you can explore the three miles of winding walking paths and nature trails that go around the gardens. General admission to the park will cost you $10 with access to a flat-bottom wooden boat to paddle around the swamp. It is one of the best places to visit in the South.
Cape Lookout
Cape Lookout is a group of underdeveloped islands on the Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina. It offers 56 miles of sandy beaches, accessible only by boat. Once you reach the islands, you can enjoy boating and fishing in its blue waters. Others may enjoy overnight stays at the island rentals or tent camping along the shorelines. A popular tourist attraction is the Shackelford horses. One hundred or so wild horses live peacefully along the beaches in secluded areas. Visitors are free to go and watch the horses (from a safe distance) and learn more about their history.
Pinehurst, NC
When it comes to sports in the Carolinas, for me, there is nothing better than a 4-day weekend watching the U.S. Open in the home of American golf. The weather is great, the course is more than challenging, and the town is abuzz with energy. For those that aren't as much of golf fans, the Sandhills of Moore County is a great place to visit year round with so many amazing activities, from the world-class spa at Pinehurst to great hiking trails and parks, and amazing culinary options including cideries, breweries, and distilleries. It's such a lovely area to enjoy a laidback weekend getaway.

Pilot Mountain State Park
The state park covers this mountain and over 3000 acres of conserved land, making it one of the top things to see in North Carolina. The park offers several outdoor activities, including hiking trails, horseback riding trails, and campsites. The rocky cliffs are also popular for rock climbing and rappelling, meant for those who want to enjoy the thrill. The park also houses the Yadkin River section, where you can go canoeing and kayaking.
Jockey’s Ridge State Park
The Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Dare County is home to the tallest living sand dune system on the Atlantic coast. It is one of the most frequented state parks among tourists, ideal for hang gliding and sandboarding from the natural dune systems.
Hunting Island State Park
Hunting Island State Park is one of South Carolina's most popular state parks, spread over a 5000-acre semi-tropical barrier
island. Its beaches are regarded as some of the most beautiful beaches in America and attract millions of visitors every year.
Edisto Treehouses
Paddle down to the 150-acre Edisto River Refuge and you will come across three rustic retreats, the Edisto Treehouses. These treehouses are completely off-grid and offer an exciting chance to enjoy the New Year in nature’s quiet bliss. The treehouses are only accessible by canoe, so enjoy a lazy trip to the treehouses over this stretch of the Blackwater River. They also include a small kitchen area with tables and chairs, cooking utensils, a dining deck, a screened sleeping loft with futon mattresses, rechargeable lanterns, and even a few board games to keep guests entertained.
Caesars Head State Park
Caesars Head State Park is located just 25 miles north of Greenville along the border that meets North Carolina. It is named after the stone outcrop at the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains at an elevation of 2,000 ft. It is best known for its stunning views of the mountainsides, extensive outdoor activities and trailside camping facilities. The waters of the Saluda River flowing at its center are also popular among fishing enthusiasts.
Lake Jocassee
Lake Jocassee is a beautiful 9,000-acre lake in the mountains of the Pickens and Oconee Counties. At the south end of the lake is the Devils Fork State Park, which, along with the lake, is a hotspot for visitors.

Botany Bay is a preserved wildlife management area covering around 4000 acres of land on beautiful Edisto Island in South Carolina. The bay is known for its historical buildings, maritime forests, freshwater ponds, and beautiful beaches. Congaree National Park
Spread over 20,000 acres of wilderness, Congaree National Park is located 18 miles southeast of the state capital, Columbia. It is known for its giant hardwoods, towering pine trees that form some of the highest canopies in the world, diverse plant and animal life, and wild forest landscape. The winters are pretty mild in South Carolina, so the park tends to remain open year-round. You can also get a camping permit to enjoy a holiday getaway.
