THE NOTE
No. 55 New year, new you! That’s what January is for every year—a reinvention of sorts— but this year, let’s make it ever so slightly different. Let’s make the changes that we want to happen really stick. We can encourage each other to be healthier, eat better, work on our wellness—both mentally and physically—and simply try to live life a little fuller. That’s what we tried to do in this first issue of 2019. Our features include a get fit guide to gyms that really pushes us to be our best, a healthy menu to inspire a greener diet, including the most delicious (and gorgeous) salads in the city, and a story about unconventional wellness showcasing everything from a boot camp on the Panthers’ practice field to yoga at the Mint Museum. Our resident health-nut tastes the best juices and smoothies in Charlotte, and we set out to explore the most adventurous places in the Carolinas, because what’s better for your mental and physical health than an adventure out in nature? Here’s to 2019—the year our resolutions last, and the year we truly start living life to the fullest. Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice, Editor | Brett Barter, Publisher

“It feeds my soul to meditate on the beautiful."

I
Impressionistic, loose, gestural, life-giving: these are the marks of Julia Lawing Fine Art. A lifelong artist and longtime North Carolinian, Julia Lawing synchronizes color and texture to capture the essence of a moment, to evoke the emotion and energy of life’s mundane beauty. Lawing’s work has been exhibited throughout the Carolinas, and even displayed within Charlotte’s own cityscape through ArtPop Street Gallery. She pours back into the community romanticized expressions of the very beauty, life, and energy that inspired the art’s creation. Here, Lawing lets us in on the stories behind her strokes.
The Culture // Musings
“Beauty matters. It is necessary for life.” How has art transitioned from primarily a hobby to such a large part of your life? I have drawn all my life, but found my true passion for art when I started oil painting in 2014; I fell in love with the combination of impasto, color, and mark making. When I worked full time at The Charlotte Observer in the advertising department, I took night classes at Central Piedmont in anything and everything creative, from woodworking to stained glass to ceramics. When my daughters were small, I fed my creativity by making art with them, docenting at our local Cabarrus Arts Council, and teaching art at their elementary school for a couple of years. But, when I started oil painting at Braitman Studio, something clicked, and I knew I’d found my calling. Tell us about what inspires the content of your work. My subjects are whatever life is sending my way: landscapes, coastal or mountain, rural or urban, wildlife, architecture, figures. My favorite muses are my four teenage daughters. I paint because it feeds my soul to meditate on the beautiful– which can be mundane or arresting– and then send it back out into the world in my own unique way. Your art was displayed through artpop in 2018. can you describe what ArtPop does? ArtPop Street Gallery promotes local artists displaying

their work on billboards, newsracks, and digital airport displays in the Charlotte region. What projects have kept you busy lately? I recently completed six paintings for the Metropolitan Charlotte Midtown complex which were then turned into huge window clings for their Kings Drive display. Why do you believe the mission of ArtPop is important for our community today? Beauty matters. It is necessary for life. It is not superfluous or a luxury, rather healthy living includes a regular practice of feasting upon beauty and goodness, meditating on it, showing gratitude for it. Creating art and gazing at it stimulates our brains and souls. What are you looking toward for the future? I hope to continue improving and exploring figure work, and growing in the communication of my heart on canvas. My hope is that my work is life-giving and uplifting to viewers. "To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts," Thoreau wrote, and I agree. info julialawing.com / julialawingart

An exhibition to explore collage as a medium. words SUNNY HUBLER

Under Construction is the Mint Museum’s first large-scale exhibition to explore collage as a medium. It’s an artistic technique in which materials are cut, torn, and layered to create new meanings and narratives. Though it gained acclaim in the early twentieth century through the groundbreaking work of artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Kurt Schwitters, and Jean Arp, the art form experienced a renaissance after World War II. Charlotte’s own Romare Bearden is widely credited with having rejuvenated and reinvigorated the technique.

The Culture // Exhibited
Featuring more than 50 international artists and more than 100 works of art, including Bearden’s, Under Construction explores the growth of the collage technique and aesthetic from the 1950s to the present. It includes numerous works by Bearden, as well as examples by other notable artists like Robert Motherwell, Tim Rollins and K.O.S., Sam Gilliam, Howardena Pindell, Dario Robleto, Donald Sultan, and James Rosenquist. The impact of the collage aesthetic in the fields of painting, printmaking, photography, and assemblage work will be explored as well. Although drawn primarily from the many holdings of The Mint Museum itself, this exhibition also includes special loans from private collections and new work by some of today’s leading artists who continue to push the creative form ahead. info mintmuseum.org @themintmuseum STMARY - 1866 - QC Exclusive Half Page_L1.pdf

Introducing the ArtPop Class of 2019 These twenty talented artists will have their work displayed on billboards across Charlotte.

words SUNNY HUBLER photos courtesy ARTPOP
With a gallery spanning Charlotte’s city streets (and beyond), ArtPop Street Gallery has brought the work of local artists to the attention of our town as well as united the Queen City community through an artful urban landscape. Through a grand collaboration with outdoor advertising companies, founder Wendy Hickey and ArtPop are on a mission to provide local creators a canvas of unprecedented scale, by turning highways, airports, and thoroughfares across the nation into cultivators for public expression and discovery.
44 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JAN/FEB 2019
Between budget cuts and mass digitization, access to and support for local art is growing scarce; yet, ArtPop represents a grassroots artistic liberation of sorts—a cultivator of curiosity, community, and commitment to artistry emerging from our very city streets. For five years, ArtPop artists have been getting the exposure they truly deserve on billboards across the city, and we are excited to announce that this wonderful street gallery continues. We would like to introduce to you the sixth class

These talented artists include sixteen new ArtPop artists and several “two timers” who were re-eligible : Ashley Knight and Tina Alberni (class of 2014), and Ladianne Henderson and Arthur Brouthers (class of 2015). The award will go to Hannah Bauerle, who along with being featured on a billboard in Charlotte will also receive a $500 scholarship. A special thanks goes out to the ArtPop Street Gallery family for beautifying our streets for another year and emphasizing the value of public art, for Charlotteans and visitors alike. So, without further ado, we’d like to announce the selected artists for the Class of 2019: Raj Kumar, Ashley Knight, Randy Dean, Verna Witt, Hamilton Ward, Rae Stark,

Belmont artist Juan Logan utilizes his art to explore and question current issues at both a local and global level. words MARY ELIZABETH MYRICK photos JAMEY PRICE
Juan Logan’s art isn’t confined to a singular subject matter or medium. His work is a range of paintings, sculptures, films, and digital prints, and as he’s grown and evolved as a person, his commentary and artistic perspective have simultaneously as well. He received his M.F.A from the Maryland Institute College of Art, and his pieces have been on featured at prestigious locations such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. Today, he continues to create in his local studio. His latest exhibit, Long Silence, was on display at SOCO Gallery up through September of 2018. Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, Logan now lives in Belmont. He was raised in a farming community, surrounded by his family. “It informed me in wonderful ways in terms of creativity. They were constantly making things; if they didn’t have it, they made it,” Logan described. From a young age, he felt free to take risks in his craft and experiment; he knew that the people close to him would support him, regardless of his success. Additionally, time in the Air Force allowed him to travel and see more of the world. “It gave me the opportunity to look at other cultures in a different kind of way, up close and personal. We so often think that our way is the only way, never realizing what is going on around us. As a young person, that was really important for me to see,” Logan noted.

“We so often think that our way is the only way, never realizing what is going on around us.”
Over time, his subject matter has morphed, from his embracing his own experiences, to exploring both the American landscape and greater global issues. And, as he embarks to magnify these issues, he isn’t interested in providing answers. “I think what I’m trying to do is to ask better questions. I hope that my audience will consider asking their own questions, perhaps more in-depth questions,” he explained. In an over-stimulated culture full of social media and images, Logan’s work implores his viewers to pause and reconsider. “We are all connected, each and every one of us," Logan said. “It doesn’t really matter if something is happening or has happened on some foreign soil—it’s that it’s happening at all, and shouldn’t we, on some level, be concerned about that? If we see a child in a very desperate situation, does it only have to be our child to care? Isn’t it enough that it’s happening to a child to care? My work is looking at things that are occurring, and trying to develop a visual vocabulary that allows you to talk about those things."

Raw Material Lee Cool breathes new life into a men’s fashion staple. words MEAGAN SHAPIRO photos JAMEY PRICE
54 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JAN/FEB 2019
When Lee Cool’s first business venture failed, he never imagined he would pick himself up and try again so soon. His original luxury watch company went through ups and downs before he called it quits, but Cool wasn’t actually done: He went back to the drawing board. But this time was different. He had found what would make him unique. Stepping away from the tired, overplayed world of high-end watches, Cool sought to create his own spin on the industry. He turned to a more rustic tone in design and implemented more natural materials to make his products. In late 2017, Raw Watches was born. Cool’s comeback wasn’t as carefully orchestrated as one might be inclined to assume. In fact, he stumbled upon his current venture quite by accident. After his first attempt at watchmaking, the Charlotte native wanted to shelf the idea altogether. He was playing around with materials while crafting Christmas gifts when he made his first wooden watch. After he saw the response his family and friends had to the finished product, Cool saw the splash he could

Besides the battery and the movement, every part of the watch is a renewable resource. Made from natural ebony, sandalwood, and bamboo, they still give your arm a touch of luxury but with half the cost and waste. The straps are made with genuine cow leather and come in single or double strapping, proving that truly no watch produced is the same. Cool is also a fan of how durable the wood is, and says it compares well to traditional metal. “The only issues I have had with durability would be with the strap and inner parts,” he shares. “I have had to replace a small handful of straps and movements for customers, typically due to water damage, but have yet to replace any casings at all.”

I do not consider myself ‘successful’ yet, and it is likely I will fail again, but it’s my failures that drove me to do what I am doing today.” Yet it isn’t just their sleek, natural appearance that distinguishes Raw Watches from the crowd, it's Lee’s own attention to detail and dedication to pleasing his crowd. Unlike other watch companies, there is no engraving or design Lee won’t put on the products. He even goes as far as offering engravings anywhere on the watch, including the leather strap itself, for any encryption, logo, or picture etching. And they mean any—Cool has yet to deny a customer request. According to Eloy Roy, Jr., the pursuit of one’s health isn’t found in a restrictive diet or an intimidating regimen; rather, to lead a healthy life warrants one thing. That, according to the owner of the new Lights Juicery & Cafe in Charlotte, is balance—achieved through intuitive, attentive, and sustainable eating. Originally from Miami, Florida, Roy Jr. and his Buenos Airian family moved to Charlotte eight years ago. It would become the place where Eloy ultimately fulfilled dreams of starting his own restaurants. Today, he invigorates Ballantyne with the energy, intention, and community that is The Lights Juicery & Cafe, and promotes a sustainable, healthful lifestyle as inspiring as it is appetizing.

Your family also owns Oggi. How has this experience influenced how you approached The Lights? I connected so deeply with that space—I lived there. Every meal of the day was cooked in that kitchen; I spent the days studying service and connecting with a fantastic clientele. At Oggi, I watched, with careful attention, how a space becomes an energy source. The more time and care we put into Oggi, the more the restaurant lit up with people, food, and ambiance. I looked to expand the energy source that is Oggi with The Lights.

For people new to juice, what would you recommend starting with? Each juice provides specific benefits. For example, if you are exercising, I would suggest something sweeter that allows the body to get the essential roots and the proper sugars that one needs to kickstart the digestive process. Choosing between a juice or a smoothie depends on the level of satisfaction the body is looking for. The body will work a little harder to process the fibers provided in a smoothie. The key is to listen to what the body is asking for: if you had sweets the night before, go

for a greener juice or smoothie to cleanse and balance sugars; if you skipped that snack the night before, go for the sweeter option. It’s all about balance. What are your goals and plans for the future of The Lights? I’m looking to grow in terms of expanding the menu—adding adaptogenic, medicinal foods that heal the mind along with the body—and to incorporate housemade, immune boosting bone broths and mineral vegetable broths to gently cleanse the gut and heal inflammation. The grand picture for The Lights is to grow a large team so we can ultimately deliver juices to people's homes, and to connect more with local farms and educate the community of the important and necessary shift in food consciousness. info thelightsjuicery.com @thelightsjuicery

Tuna Tartare words SAM BRAMLET T photo JAMEY PRICE
First things first: The plating of this dish is so beautiful that I practically feel bad digging into it. But that hesitation quickly dissipates after the first bite; it’s impossible to overstate precisely how much effort went in to making something as simple as tuna tartare become a work of art. The deep pink of the tuna sits surrounded by the bright yellow of lemon confit, while a garden-full of colorful petals are carefully placed on top to create a feast for the eye. Sweet corn is intermingled with the tartare for texture as well as intrigue. The flavor is what you expect from something so carefully crafted. Tartare’s taste is based on the preparation of the meat, and with such quality tuna in the hands of La Belle Helene’s kitchen, what was already off-the-charts umami becomes tempered and focused. — info — labellehelenerestaurant.com @labellehelenenc

Roots are strong foundations that grow over time. They can be gentle and forceful, all at once. This cocktail, by Bardo’s mixologist maestro Amanda Britton, puts subtle yet potent flavor to good use. The spice of ginger, the sweet yellow beet and carrot, and the light cut of dill and lime all work with one another to bring the best out of the Muddy River Rum. Embracing its locally-made base, this cocktail reiterates its theme—honoring where you come from—by enjoying the fruits of the earth. Unlike some cocktails that try to mask the burn of alcohol with sweetness or bitterness, Putting Down Roots employs the robust, powerful identity of its ingredients as if to anchor instead. 2dash1 is Charlotte’s most unique woodworking and metalworking shop; it’s a design and build company with a story, and one that has already made a name for itself in the local community. Owner and founder Tuan Hoang Le reflected on how he came up with the name for his company: His friend’s young daughter, Amara, had a hard time pronouncing Tuan’s name. She kept saying “two-one,” and the nickname just stuck. Today, with a thriving business that’s an extension of himself, it seemed fitting the nickname carry on. Even if you don’t recognize the business name, you have certainly noted his work, on display in beloved venues like GoodRoad Ciderworks, LeRoy Fox Restaurant, Anthropologie, and QC Social Lounge. The designer had tried numerous industries before he found his niche in the building environment, one where he says he is allowed to fully learn from and love his work. 2dash1 is your local one-stop-shop for all metal and wood designing needs, and Tuan has made a reputation out of going above and beyond client desires and expectations. He was noticed quickly by industry professionals of all sorts, from renowned builders to interior designers like Lucy and Company's Beth Keim and his passion for the craft is just as strong whether the project requires flooring, stairs, or custom-made pieces. Tuan sat down with us to talk all things 2dash1 and what it’s like to own the business.

Both types of projects bring me a lot of joy. In your opinion, what does it take to be a good craftsman? Passion, dedication, and patience. You have to love what you do in order to dedicate your life to mastering your skills. A Gray Walker Family Room words MARY ELIZABETH MYRICK photo ERICA MARK
This Foxcroft living space, by Gray Walker of Gray Walker Interiors, is a middle-ground between the fun, vibrancy of coral accents and the subtlety of wood paneling and understated textures. Coordinated around the pre-existing oushak rug, this room is designed to be not only a space to entertain, but also a place to lounge, read, and work. With three teenagers in the house, it needed to be comfortable as well as elegant. A commissioned painting from Sozo Gallery draws the eye to the middle of the
room and acts as a gathering point for the various hues and shades throughout the space. Melon green tones in the throw pillows and curtains are emphasized by the verdant greens from houseplants and the natural life outside of the windows. Coffee table books are carefully arranged to complement the color palette throughout the space and style the otherwise bare table. With clean lines and simplicity shaping the space, unique patterns and prints roam freely without being too overwhelming.

Framed by gothic sconces from Murray’s Ironworks and centered with modern infinity cocktail tables by Donghia, Lawler allows a variety of stylistic influences to compose this comfortably chic space. An Inviting Space Charlotte designer Lisa Sherry crafts a space that is chic, soft, and casual in this Winston-Salem getaway.

words MARY ELIZABETH MYRICK photos MICHAEL BLEVINS
Lisa Sherry is known for her approach to creating spaces that are frequently referred to as “casual luxe.” Her vision at Lisa Sherry Interieurs focuses on creating spaces that are traditional, but unique, classic and still personal, chic but always functional—not “over designed,” as she would say. When she was asked to take on this Winston-Salem living space, it was these essential elements that she used to transform the client’s family home into a more open and inviting place.

“Various threads run throughout the spaces to create a sense of unity, while allowing the dining and living rooms to each stand out individually.”
The home’s Buena Vista neighborhood is filled with a bounty of trees and distinct architecture. The abundance of surrounding natural life encapsulates the home in a cocoon-like setting; Sherry decided to emphasize the “treehouse vibe” of the interiors, with generously-sized windows, pouring plentiful sunlight into the space. She wanted to maximize the openness between the dining and living room, but simultaneously still create a slight boundary be-
tween the two. And, with pre-teens in the family, it was important to create an environment that could readily shift from an afterschool homework station to an inviting weekend entertaining spot. Various threads run throughout the spaces to create a sense of unity, while allowing the dining and living rooms to each stand out individually. Sherry’s key approach to weaving together the rooms was an emphasis on creative floor planning, alongside

threading color and texture amidst carefully chosen furniture and a bit of millwork. Primarily, neutral colors dominate the design, but subtle shades of blue are tucked about the space with architectural textures and textile patterns creating common ground. The living room houses a single-cushion style Verellen sofa—ideal for catching up with friends or for a quick cat-nap. Custom Lisa Sherry Interieurs (yes, she does that, too) patterned pillows introduce hues of blue, alongside details of a signature frayed-edge graphic. A low cabinet behind the sofa adds a sneaky, stylish storage option while working alongside the sofa to create a subtle divider between the two rooms. The stone fireplace is one of the primary spotlights of the room, and Sherry cozied a grouping of small stools around the hearth, their woven quality contrasting the stonework. The addition of suede swivel chairs are ideal for bouncing conversations and work to harmonize with the neutral color palette.
The Folio // Blueprint
There are two dining spaces: the larger, more prominent dining area, and a smaller, more intimate nook. The long dining table rests beneath a one-of-a-kind modern rope chandelier, surrounded by slipcovered armchairs all around the table; as Sherry noted, “Everyone gets the best seat.” The dining nook is adorned with a cozy bench, placed between the two built-in bar cabinets, dotted with pillows covered with vintage textiles. Pocket doors are the hidden surprise here; they’re ready to fold out whenever it’s time for a special gathering. A blend of soft shapes and strong architectural elements, breezy neutrals and ample natural light, this family living and dining space is prepared for the most relaxing everyday or the most spectacular evening. Lisa Sherry’s careful attention to detail marries two distinct rooms, while allowing them to serve their individual (but varied) purposes. info lisasherryinterieurs.com @lisasherryinterieurs

I
I distinctly recall the first time I heard mention of Canyon Ranch, on some TV show where the fictional character was referencing a far-away, uber-luxe vacation she’d taken. I don’t know why, but it piqued my interest, especially when I learned this was actually a “wellness resort” and not just your typical all-inclusive. A few years later when I was in Las Vegas, I happened upon the name attached to the beautiful, marble-white cafe and spa inside The Venetian. It was my first little taste of the wellness brand, but on the wild, often weird, Strip. So, when I finally got the invite this year to visit the Lenox, Massachusetts iteration of Canyon Ranch (there are locations in Arizona and Miami, too), for the full experience, I didn’t hesitate. The weekend was to include a brain science lecture series, in addition to all the wonder the resort has in store normally. One short plane ride later, and I was stepping out of the heat of southern summer into crisp, New England air. A limo driver from CR picked me up, grabbed my bags, and whisked me away, driving us through the highway that rapidly turned into winding, wooded, increasingly quiet

roads. If you haven’t been to The Berkshires, here’s what you should know: The area is beloved by vacationing New Yorkers and other major city-dwellers for good reason. The Berkshires (the term for the area extending from Vermont’s Green Mountains to western Massachusetts and then south into the top portion of Connecticut). It’s rural, canopied, and quaint, the stuff of New England-y fairy tale. The area has long been a haven for those looking for respite from their respective cities, the biggest scenery change a short drive can bring. Back to Canyon Ranch: Up a long, gated driveway sits the estate, marked by the iconic white, pillared Bellefontaine Mansion. The lawn is perfectly manicured and rolling, with adirondacks dotted around the premises and walking trails winding through the grass and into the forests. Built in 1897 and reopened in 1989, Bellefontaine was once a private mansion, eventually left empty and gutted by fire. The Zuckermans, founders of Canyon Ranch, decided to restore the mansion when they opened CR Lenox, while also adding New-England-style buildings in keeping with the local area.

The Canyon Ranch brand is perhaps one of the most unique resorts I have ever visited. It’s been around for more than 35 years, founded in 1979 at the flagship location in Tucson, Arizona. The resort brand aims to educate on a whole health philosophy, treating mind and spirit as well as the physical body. This is meant to be a place where you shed everything from your burdensome stresses to your buzzing cell phone. Upon arrival, I was greeted with signs asking me to put away mobile devices (they’re only allowed in designated areas and in your own room), and it was made readily clear I could enjoy healthy living advice at every turn, with full access to medical professionals, and a mix of Western and Eastern medicine (think acupuncture and ayurvedic treatments, to name a few).

Ski Carolina Five southern mountains every winter sports enthusiast should experience this season. words SAM BRAMLET T
After such a warm summer and late fall, the prospect of cold weather and freshly laid snow is welcome. Just imagine how beautiful it’ll feel to shoot down the mountain on your board or skis as the powder kicks up and the wind rushes by. The mountains of the Carolinas provide the winter wonderland options you want so that you can satisfy the urge to shred without busting out plane tickets to Colorado. Here are just five of the ski resorts you can hit in the Carolinas this season.

Sugar Mountain The 1200 vertical feet makes Sugar Mountain the highest vertical drop in the state. With 20 trails and 115 skiable acres, Sugar Mountain offers days full of endless fun. The difficulty is most suited for intermediate skiers, though it does have a terrain park, two Black Diamond trails, and one DoubleBlack Diamond. Cataloochee Ski Area This ski resort is perfect for the whole family. The winding trails and friendly staff ensure that first-time skiers will be taken care of while the rest of the group enjoys a day of easy skiing. There are even slopes meant specifically for tubing so the kids can have hours of casual fun.

Beech Mountain Beech Mountain is home to 17 slopes with a total of 98 skiable acres. Over the last few years, Beech Mountain has invested millions of dollars in its snowmaking capabilities, so the resort will always have high-quality powder. Its high-speed lift system also helps to keep lines short, allowing skiers more runs per day. Wolf Ridge Resort Wolf Ridge Resort is an excellent mountain for intermediate skiers. The 23 ski slopes are mostly “Blues,” meaning that children and relatively new skiers will have their pick of moderately challenging slopes that all offer excitement and speed. Appalachian Ski Mountain The Appalachian Ski Mountain is a one-stop shop for skiers in the Carolinas. It boasts a race team, two terrain parks, lifts capable of servicing 10,000 people a day, and 12 slopes with a wide range of difficulty. It’s a popular destination for night skiing as well, and if you get tired and just want to spend some time relaxing, there’s a skating rink and around a hundred restaurants all within 10 miles.

Winter Pursuits Carolina cold weather adventures for the outdoor enthusiast. words JP GRICE and SUNNY HUBLER photos JAMEY PRICE
Winter weather can make the best of us, shall we say, indoorsy. The colder temperatures and shorter days can easily send you into hibernation, especially for us Southerners spoiled by the lengthy dog days of summer-into-fall. But if you can brave the elements, winter in the Carolinas proffers sights and opportunity for adventure unlike any you’ll get during the rest of the year. There’s something special about this time of year, when the outdoors offer a little extra peace and solitude. Here are six places and activities that we’d argue are actually better in wintertime; these are ways to really embrace the season out in the natural setting of some of our states’ most beautiful places. A fireplace and warm drink await you afterward.

Fly Fishing Dupont State Forest One of our favorite places in North Carolina, DuPont State Forest, is nestled in the southwestern part of the state near the small town of Cedar Mountain. In the spring, summer, and fall, it is one of the most visited natural places in the state. Miles of trails offer the outdoor enthusiast amazing hiking and biking opportunities. Incredible waterfalls like Hooker, Triple, and High Falls add drama to the already stunning scenery. The Little River that winds through the valley in DuPont is easily accessible and chock full of trout— drawing novice and expert fly fishermen alike to the area. During the warmer months, to avoid crowds, we highly recommend visiting the area early on a weekday morning. However, for the outdoor enthusiast looking for that special bit of solitude in DuPont, the colder months are the absolute best time to visit—hikers, bikers, photographers, and fishermen will have the park virtually to themselves. The beauty of visiting during the winter is that when the temperatures drop below freezing the forest and river turn white. Spray from the falls freeze on the rocks and branches along the river’s edge, creating the look of a winter wonderland. If you get a chance to visit during or just after a snow, the park truly glistens. Cross country skiing Roan Mountain Roan Mountain is one of the South’s most stunning balds, a virtually tree-less mound nearly 6,000 feet above sea level that is located smack dab on the border of northwestern North Carolina and neighboring Tennessee. The mountain has some of the most epic long-range views on the entire East Coast. It is an absolutely beautiful place to
The Explored // Sporting Destinations
visit spring, summer, and fall, but during the cold temperatures of winter, Roan is an absolute gem. Due to the specific location in the Appalachians, the mountain receives an extremely large amount of snow and, when you combine that with its unique bald terrain, Roan becomes the perfect Carolina cross-country skiing destination. For those willing to deal with the extremely cold temps, the payoff here can be high: Skiers get an entire mountain to themselves for some much needed solitude paired with exceptional scenery. Duck Hunting in Hyde County As the temperatures drop to below freezing in the northeast, literally millions of ducks fly south on the Eastern flyway toward the coast of Carolina. Their destination—Hyde County— becomes home to all kinds of wild birds, from Tundra Swans to geese to a wide variety of ducks, all of which hunker down in the marshlands and around Pamlico Sound for the winter. It makes this area of the South a truly special destination for the waterfowl hunter. We had a chance to hunt the icy wetlands of Carolina ourselves with one of the top outfitters in the state, Dare to Hyde Outdoor Adventures, and the experience did not disappoint. Ice Climbing Winding Stair Gap It’s pretty likely that no one you know associates the state of North Carolina with the sport of ice climbing, but whether or not you believe us, the southwestern part of the state is actually a well-known climbing destination. One of the most famous routes on which to break out your crampons is Winding Stair Gap. It’s an exceptional climb near Franklin, NC, in the Nantahala National Forest and right next to the Appalachian Trail. This climb, like most in the Carolinas, is a D.O.T. road-cut climb, however, this particular cut differentiates itself from the rest solely based on height, clicking in at nearly 200 feet high. Cold water Kayaking in OBX Offseason has arrived in OBX and that means that Outer Banks kayakers have the popular Pamlico Sound virtually to themselves. With hardly any boat traffic, seemingly endless flat water and marshland to explore, and exceptionally colorful sunrises and sunsets to enjoy (everyone knows both are better in the winter), this is the place for those willing to bear the cold air and cool water. The bounty is aplenty. Winter Sailing On Lake Norman Gone are the crowds of summer and the huge wakes from all of the boats that get LKN really rocking. Gone are the tie ups, the swimmers, and all of the summer ruckus. In wintertime, sailors have the water nearly to themselves, and this water, due to the colder temperatures, is surprisingly clear and far more blue than usual—almost the same shade of blue as the Pacific Ocean, if you ever have laid eyes on that body of water. It makes for a day of sailing that’s truly peaceful and extremely gorgeous.

Salads were rarely, if ever, craved. They were an afterthought: “Sure, I guess I’ll add a salad;” an appetizer: “This rabbit food will really make me realize how hungry I am;” or a guilty concession: “I slurped down a whole gallon of ice cream last night...really ought to order a salad for lunch.” Those days are long gone. The salads of 2019 are not only nutritious, but filling and flavorful dishes that offer a mix of greens, grains, veggies, and proteins and can be a menu’s star attraction. The healthy bowl is finally getting its due and rightly so. It's perfectly portable and packed with fresh, gourmet ingredients. In 2019 the salad reigns as queen of the Queen City’s midday spread and here's a smattering of our favorites. Tupelo Honey Rainbow Kale Caesar Tupelo Honey, the beloved Asheville-original that specializes in scratch-made Southern cuisine, is also home to one of the freshest bowls you’ll come across in Charlotte’s South Boulevard. The Rainbow Kale Caesar has thinlysliced golden beet and watermelon radish that mixes well with flavorful butternut squash and cauliflower. It is topped off with grated parmesan and pumpernickel croutons.

Haberdish's Brunch Salad Stop by Haberdish during brunch hours for their morning take on the bowl: a mix of wilted arugula, pickled onion, crisp radish, edible flowers, and a poached egg. This leafy and almost-too-beautiful-to-eat concoction is an ideal midday breakfast follow up to a heavy late-night snack or can be consumed first thing in the morning for a dependable postworkout energy boost. Duckworth’s Kitchen & Taphouse Salmon Salad Duckworth’s Scottish Salmon salad comes with lightly blackened fish, drizzled with a sweet chili sauce, and served atop a bed of mixed greens ribboned with charred corn, edamame beans, quinoa, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, and a pinch of green onion. The dish comes served with a side of buttery chipotle ranch, for a meal that’s both hearty and healthy.

Living Kitchen Arugula Harvest Living Kitchen is South End’s first 100% plant-based, organic dining experience. Their beautifully-dressed Arugula Harvest salad features arugula and purple cabbage topped with an impressive array of ingredients: sweet potatoes, avocado, pear, caramelized pecans, and cashew-basil cheese. A splash of maple-mustard vinaigrette really brings all of these flavors together. This is a salad that deserves its place at the table.

Fern's Lolla Rossa The vegetarian/vegan Fern has all kinds of fresh takes on salad classics. Their “Lolla Rossa” is about as “comfort-food” as a salad can come, with a bed of red leaf lettuce, pickled vegetables, and tomato that gets topped with their housemade crunchy-smoky-sweet coconut “bacon”, buttermilk vegan ranch, torn cornbread croutons, and the option to add vegan fried “chicken” or tempeh to make it even heartier. Seven Oak’s Southwest Cobb Seven Oaks Cafe has an array of brunch, lunchtime, and dinner fare, easy grab-and-go options like salads, soups, and sammies, but the Southwest Cobb is a standout on the flavor scale. With lettuce, roasted pimento cheese, black beans, garden tomatoes, avocado, egg, and bacon, this is a zesty option that satisfies every time. Aria's Chopped Salad Aria Tuscan Grill has a simple pan roasted salmon chopped salad that has the perfect mix of Italian flavors and gardenfresh vegetables. The plate comes with romaine, radicchio, tomato and cucumber, alongside feta, salumi, pepperoncini, and ceci beans. The fresh combination of delicious ingredients is dressed with a bite of oregano and a zesty lemon vinaigrette.

Fahrenheit's Rooftop House Salad This simple but delightfully fresh bowl served on the 21st floor at uptown's Fahrenheit is a standout. Baby greens, shaved celery, radishes, and a miso dressing are aesthetically pleasing to the eye and equally pleasing to the palate. For those looking for a meal that is light and refreshing this is it. For others looking for the perfect start to a Fahrenheit feast—a spread of their buns, pizzas, steaks, and chicken mac— it is also a great option. Yafo Build Your Own Bowl What’s not to love when you get to build a different salad each time you visit the casual-style Mediterranean Yafo? The BYOB option allows you to choose an on-the-go meal that’s hearty, warming, and delicious — it’s anything but a classic salad option, and that’s what makes it so dang good. Start with a bed of greens and then have the Yafo chefs add your choice of a spread (hummus, tzatziki), toppings of nearly every variety, a protein (vegetarian, even), and sauce or dressing to finish the whole shebang off.

Superica's Ensalada de la Casa Superica has been supplying South End with a steady stream of Tex-Mex since spring, dishing out heaps of their Ensalada de la Casa, a comfortingly classic combination of chopped greens, avocado, cucumber, pickled onion, corn, radish, Monterrey Jack, and crispy tortillas that can be topped off with wood-grilled chicken, steak, or shrimp. Rooster’s Wood-Fired Kitchen We won’t lie that we usually head to Rooster's for the more… meat-forward types of dishes, but the farro salad is unforgettable. Served on a bed of kale, this bowl is filled to the brim with pickled vegetables and Rooster's roasted turkey, sprinkled with cranberries, Spanish almonds, and, Bulgarian feta. Earl’s Grocery Harvest Salad Earl’s harvest salad is one of the best grab-and-go options around: the signature smoked farro, fresh roasted beets, kale, pickled onions, and fennel come topped with seasoned pumpkin seeds, feta cheese, currants, and Fresno chili vinaigrette.

As Charlotte itself grows, the fitness scene is booming alongside it. Our local community is increasingly curious about finding the space to play, thrive, and grow together instead of simply going through the motions. Katie Dixon, who opened Bloc. this year and also owns Kadi Fit in Cornelius, is no stranger to this concept. Dixon sees the expanding interest in the industry as an opportunity for something greater to take place: not only a personal transformation or a community transformation, but an evolution of the fitness industry itself. As the co-founder of Bloc., alongside her partners Duncan Littlefield and Liz Joyce, Dixon offers a comprehensive approach to fitness, pushing the bounds of the workout trend to encompass a truly holistic healthy lifestyle and a “one-stop-shop” of sorts inside the doors. The team is a compelling bunch: They’re clearly all-in; invested, eager, and energetic, and they’re all first to say that they too were as desiring of this type of community as they hoped their clientele would be. As friends and business partners they had their own little circle already, especially in the Lake Norman area; now, they’ve widened it to share with Charlotte what fuels and inspires them. Bloc. is a stylish Dilworth spot, with hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, high ceilings, and plenty of plants to cozy things up. The cafe in Bloc. offers a community table and stools to perch on, and the recovery room is complete with plush chairs and plenty of room to relax. What’s next for fitness is anyone’s bet, but this team is sure to be on the cutting edge, keeping health and wellness open and available for all.

What made you want to branch off from your first business, Kadi Fit? My audacious goal has always been to create something that would shift the fitness industry and impact people’s lives beyond the four walls of the gym. In order to do this, I knew we would need something scalable, [which is why] I spent seven years building a rock solid team at Kadi Fit and curating the perfect template to replicate. How did Bloc. come to fruition? In 2016, my friend Wes Knight was leading free workouts around the city and asked me to help lead. He ultimately ended up handing over the reigns [to me]. My initial intention there was to increase my network with the idea of another Kadi on the horizon. What I didn’t realize was that, by really practicing [Wes’ advice to me of] “collaboration over competition,” I would establish a solid team of talented visionaries that would form a brand-new concept, Bloc., and even build the space to house it. Soon, the regular park workouts were replaced by work days for the space. It all took a very considerable amount of patience, but there is nothing like savasana: reflecting on the reward and the story.

techniques designed to keep the body moving optimally through the release of trigger points, improved range of motion, and increased flexibility. Tell us about the choice of the name. [Co-founder] Duncan Littlefield and I initially came up with the idea of ‘block,’ to make people think of a block party. For us, a block party was this great memory of a community getting together, sharing food, laughs, and truly enjoying each other’s company. We then broke it down further and discovered more: Building Lifestyle On Community, aka Bloc., which was everything we needed to say and more. Why are you interested in building a community for your clientele? Relationships are the starting point for everything we do. At the heart of our community is the practice of cultivating authentic, meaningful relationships and providing the platform for people to be vulnerable, comfortable, gritty, and unapologetically themselves. We truly “welcome the authentic you,” as it states on our front door. My main objective is to open people’s awareness to how their mindset creates their reality; thoughts become actions. At Bloc., we put that practice into motion with your workout and find an upward shift. Changing our physical bodies is purely a byproduct of something greater. info blocclt.com / @bloc.clt

The concept of a juice cleanse isn’t exactly new. At some point, we’ve all asked ourselves what counts as the opposite of a greasy cheeseburger or some other deliciously terrible treat. While health and wellness experts have long since pointed to greater servings of fruits and vegetables as a way to improve your health, few people actually commit to eating these servings daily. So, why not drink them? As Charlotte residents continue to pay more and more attention to their wellness, local companies have found unique ways to revitalize the juice cleanse concept. Gone are the days of gagging down a chunky blend of green goo in the name of health. Instead, stop by any of these Charlotte juice bars to try freshpressed juices that taste just as good as they make you feel.

The New Year became all but synonymous with health and fitness for obvious reason, not least of them being the craving we feel January 1 for fresh starts. Often, that’s exactly what your exercise regimen needs come mid-winter: a breath of new life, a break from routine, a jolt of fresh energy. With that in mind, and in the spirit of 2019, here are 19 local fitness centers, gyms and studios, to prove that there really is a little something out there in the Queen City for everyone. Charlotte Athletic Club The Charlotte Athletic Club is a results-driven facility that is focused on helping you to reach your fitness goals. They have two Uptown locations, Trade and Tryon in the BOA Plaza Building and the Duke Energy Center. The Duke Energy Center location has its own cryotherapy chamber. Both locations offer a variety of features and amenities, such as validated parking, a steam room and sauna, and group fitness classes. CycleBar CycleBar offers a wide variety of unique cycling from the “Classic” cycling class that mixes strength endurance, challenges, hills, and drills to their “Connect” class where the video monitors are turned off and the music is turned up. CycleBar also offers themed rides each week, so visit their website to see what classes are happening in the near future.

t's not always easy to fix your teeth, and especially as an adult. The teen memories of braces and poking wire is enough to make any would-be patient cringe, but not at Clearsmile. Run by expert orthodontist Dr. Colin Webb, Clearsmile offers a simpler and faster alternative to metal braces: Invisalign. “Invisalign offers a ton of flexibility,” says Dr. Webb. “Patients can remove them for meals, which means they don't have the same food restrictions as normal braces. They can also be removed for photos or events, and because there are no braces or wires, there are no discomfort emergencies at inconvenient times—like when patients are out of town."

hoosing a medical expert is just as important as choosing to complete a medical treatment, and the goal for any medical professional is to find the root of a patient’s pain. Unfortunately, many doctors fail to do so and only treat the symptoms a patient is experiencing. Because of this, QC Kinetix values the importance of definitive treatment above all else. The goal of QC Kinetix is to treat their patients’ orthopedic issues without the use of pharmaceutical drugs or surgical intervention, whether they’re experiencing inf lammatory conditions, chronic degenerative conditions, or acute tissue tears.
