PRESENTATION

If the Sotheby’s tradition has taught us anything, it’s how to present a rare treasure to a discerning audience. When we list a home, we commission a portfolio of photographs from a professional photographer—a carefully orchestrated series designed to show the home at its very best. We think of it in terms of curating a gallery rather than filling a catalog. After all, if your home is going to be seen by millions of people around the world, we want it to make a great first, second and third impression. Premier Sotheby’s International Realty is in the business of exceeding your expectations.

A Tradition of Excellence Continues

For driving enthusiasts who insist upon opulent luxury combined with sublime performance, Bentley Charlotte presents the Bentley Flying Spur. Upon examination of every detail both inside and out, the craftsmanship that is unique to Bentley is sure to amaze. The exhilaration then continues when one eases into the hand-stitched A-Grade leather seat and feels the subtle yet puissant rumble of the Flying Spur’s 6 liter 12-cylinder engine which launches drivers from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Combining the brute strength of a heavyweight boxer and the elegance of a ballerina, the new Flying Spur demonstrates why, even after nearly a century, the synonym for automotive excellence is still “Bentley”. To truly appreciate all the Flying Spur has to offer, we invite you to visit Bentley Charlotte.

PUBLISHERS’ NOTE

Go On An Adventure

O

ne of Charlotte’s greatest assets is its nearly perfect location. Nestled virtually in the center of the Carolinas, the Queen City is just a short drive from some of the most amazing places in the South. Some of the oldest mountains in the world crumple up west of our city and in only an hour-and-a-half or two hours you and your family can be experiencing a plethora of unforgettable activities. You can hike the famed Appalachian Trail or journey deep into the challenging Linville Gorge and just get away from the world. If you want to feel the burn in your arms while enjoying world-class views, you can hire a guide and climb Looking Glass Rock or Table Rock. If relaxation is more up your alley you can unwind on a lazy mountain river like Wilson’s Creek and tube or fly fish the day away. If you like boating, Lake Lure offers stunning vistas and great water skiing. Prefer the beach to the mountains? Well, Charlotte’s just a hop, skip, and jump away from some of the best water on the east coast. Old North State beaches like Wrightsville offer a wide variety of activities from surfing killer waves to kayaking, paddleboarding, and just plain exploring or sunbathing. Further out to the east and for the real adventurer, the Outer Banks call. The barrier islands, windy yet peaceful, are known for their gorgeous sand and plentiful saltwater. South, into our neighboring state, Murrell’s Inlet, Litchfield, and historic Charleston can keep a family occupied for months, let alone a summer getaway. The point being, take some time off this beautiful season, get away from your desk, put the cell phone down, grab your friends and family and take advantage of the abundance of natural beauty that is right around the corner. Happy Traveling! Jon-Paul Grice Brett Barter Publishers Cover Photo by Nick Noble

Playground Injuries” charts the intersection of Kayleen and Doug back and forth through time from the ages of 8 through 38 using scars, wounds, and calamities as the mile markers to explore why people hurt themselves… and each other. Opera Enriched For over sixty-five years Opera Carolina has been committed to successfully enriching Charlotte’s arts and culture community. by Melissa Justice

O

Opera Carolina was founded in 1948 by the Charlotte Music Club. First known as the Carolina Opera, it operated on a shoestring budget of $125. Volunteers built sets, sewed costumes, rehearsed, and sang leading roles. Since then, the company has become one of the largest opera companies in the Carolinas with an operating budget of about $3 million. Support provided by corporate and foundation sponsors, private donors, and institutional support from the State of North Carolina and the Arts and Science Council, plus the three major events the Opera holds has allowed the company to grow and celebrate its 65th anniversary. With a 40 member Board of Directors committed to the success of the company, and Maestro James Meena, General Director and Principal Conductor of Opera Carolina at the helm, the mission of Opera Carolina succeeds at enriching “the community through the presentation of excellence in Opera and Arts Education.” Having studied

conducting with Robert Page, professor at Carnegie Mellon University, as well as with Thomas Mihalak, Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony, Rudolph Fellner, and Boris Halip, former conductor of the Bolshoi Ballet, Meena’s resume speaks for itself. Attending the Opera is very different than when going to see a Broadway play or movie. There is a “synthesis,” says Meena “of singing, drama, symphonic music and theatrical spectacles unmatched in western culture.” An extensive programming plan takes place 18-24 months in advance. The Board of Directors’ Artistic Committee reviews the recommendations made by management and decides which operas to perform. The “evaluation process is then based on the availability of principal guest artists, physical productions, box office potential, overall cost, and repetition of popular titles.” The season’s productions must captivate the audience. The average length of an opera is about 2 hours 45 minutes with one intermission. Productions are huge. Typically, there are about

CULTURE

150 people on and off-stage. “Aida requires 200 to 250 singers, orchestra musicians, dancers, extras, artisans, and technicians.” A great deal of planning takes place. The resident company begins rehearsal about five weeks before production. The principal guest artists arrive three weeks before opening night which is followed by intense rehearsal schedules needed to “present a grand opera.” And, because many operas are written and performed in a foreign language, the Opera Carolina uses projected English titles to “mitigate the language barrier.” The end result is a season that “features three main stage grand operas at the Belk Theater, plus community programming in regional churches, and an extensive array of educational programs.” It takes a great deal of hard work, but thanks to the Charlotte community, they have “fully embraced the Opera as a valued and unique part of the cultural landscape of the region.” The audience is supportive and enthusiastic. Comprised of people from across the community, “of all races and socio-economic backgrounds,” and made up of all ages but with a new surge of 25-35 year olds, the future of the company “bodes well.” Charlotte can proudly boast that she has one of the oldest and most successful professional opera companies proving the community’s commitment to “quality cultural programming.” To learn more about the Opera and to purchase tickets or donate, go to www.operacarolina.org or call 704.332.7177. by JP Grice

In Blue Handmade, Inc was founded in 2008 when Mary Lynn Schroeder was 24 years old. Possessing a degree in Philosophy and being a highly qualified bartender and music business entrepreneur, Schroeder decided it was time for a change. Having saved enough money to live on for several months, she rented a small farmhouse in Makanda, Illinois where she bought a sewing machine, took a few lessons, and learned to stitch. “I initially planned on learning to sew in order to make my own curtains. It had not yet occurred to me that I might have a career in this field; I just intended to be a bit more self-sufficient. Coming from the “great cold North,” Schroeder eventually moved to

Asheville, North Carolina. The community is “diverse and innovative” filled with “talented people” who are “awe inspiring.” “I think it would be impossible to be a part of this community and not be challenged and intrigued by the growing artisan movement. It is an amazing place, one I’ve been searching for my entire life.” In the beginning, Schroeder made small purses, little soaps and handmade goods sold on consignment at the Smelly Hippie in Makanda, IL. Eventually, that turned into her own little shop and an etsy shop--www.inblue.etsy.com. With the move to Asheville, In Blue now resides in a “brick and mortar shop,” a “large shared studio space overlooking the French Broad River.”

In Blue has a team of five full time employees who spend their days crafting handmade leather journals, wallets, belts, flasks, and a multitude of other items all with travel themes. What makes these items so special is that “each customer has the option to customize the prints that go on the item” at no extra charge. From several different leather colors to a “bank of 3000 image choices plus the addition of up to ten words of text, each item is unique. The leather varies. Some is pre-dyed upholstery weight used to make books, wallets, and bags. The undyed leather is specifically for belts, cuffs, instrument straps, and other bags. There is a ten step process in making each piece, and a unique technique for every step. “The one I find most interesting is our printing process. We use rubber stamps to print on our items with an ink that is specific to leather and is permanent and unwavering. It took quite a bit of trial and error to determine the right kind of ink. uddy River Distillery, located in Belmont, North Carolina and on the banks of the Catawba River was the first rum distillery and just the fifth distillery in the state. Owner, Robbie Delaney, with an obsession for making good quality rum, started the distillery in late 2011 and was legally allowed to make liquor in early 2012. Since then he has produced a variety of tasty rums including Carolina Rum, a smooth silver rum perfect for sipping or mixing with your favorite cocktails and the popular Queen Charlotte’s Reserve Rum. Queen Charlotte’s Reserve is a small batch rum handcrafted tediously and aged in American white oak barrels. Their Reserve Rum is smooth, yet rich and complex and has gained notoriety around the city for its sophisticated flavors. These flavors come from just three simple ingredients, molasses, sugar, and yeast, blended in a completely signature style by Muddy River. If you haven’t had a chance to savor either of the distillery’s rums do it this summer. With so many refreshing and tasty rum recipes perfect for the warmer months you won’t regret it. Here are three of our own creations, all concocted with Muddy River’s Queen Charlotte’s Reserve, for your sampling. RECIPE

45 Day Dry Aged Strip Steak

WITH Pickled chilies, pickled shallots, citrus & fingerling potatoes

Fahrenheit, one of Charlotte’s newest and most popular restaurants, has a steak that’s even better than its view, which is saying quite a lot. A special thanks to Chef Rocco Whalen and Fahrenheit for sharing one of their exclusive recipes with our readers. STEAK INGREDIENTS

• 16oz Strip • 2-Serrano Chiles • 1 -whole lemon zest • 4oz Arugula • ½ pound Fingerling Potatoes Pickled Shallots

• ½ pound shallots sliced thin • 2 cups red wine vin • 1 cup sugar • 3 sprigs thyme

Allow to sit in brine over night in fridge, then ready to serve. 58 • qcexclusive.com • June/July 2014

Pickled Chiles

• 1 pound Serranos, sliced • 1 1/4 cups Cider Vin • 1 cup Bourbon • ½ cup honey • 2tsp ground Coriander • 1tsp Sea salt • 1tsp Mustard seeds • 2 each Bay leaves Grilling tips

Heat grill 15 to 25 minutes prior to cooking to kill any bacteria. Temperature should be 350-400*. A properly heated grill sears food on contact, keeps the insides juicy and helps pre-

vent sticking while creating a beautiful carmelization on the steak. You can also cook your potatoes on the grill for a great smoky flavored potato with a nice outside crisp.

While our steak is cooking toss your salads and pickled veggies together to top the steak once finished (grill steak to preferred temp). Allow your steak to sit separately for a few minutes before plating. This is for all the juices to stay with the meat and not run all over your plate. Once rested, plate your food and top with the delicious pickled salad you’ve created and enjoy.

Dark Skies The Best Places In The Carolinas To See The Stars Photo of the Milky Way over Oak Island by Nick Noble • www.nicknoblephotography.com

“Do not complain beneath the stars about the lack of bright spots in your life.” - Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson

Star trails shot and blended by Jeannine Doran

M

y fascination with dark skies began in central Australia. The allure only grew with my first visit to the Grand Canyon. There, staring into the vast darkness I saw more stars than I had ever seen. In the mountains of North Carolina I was spoiled by the absence of light. From the front porch of my home in rural Todd I could witness a bounty of early morning constellations. But living here in Charlotte has given me a true appreciation for the stars. The reason is simple. The lights from our city, although beautiful in their own way, make seeing lots of stars very difficult, and frankly, I miss them. However, the Queen City’s central location makes it the perfect base camp for a stargazer or night photographer. In just a couple hours drive from Charlotte, dependent upon which way you go, one can be in the Blue Ridge or on a serene beach enjoying the Milky Way. Not many cities can boast such great proximity to excellent and diverse stargazing destinations. With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the best places in the Carolinas to see the stars, many of which are just a stone’s throw from our great city. Graveyard Fields, NC

Ocracoke Island, NC

Oak Island, NC

Thirty minutes west of Brevard deep in the southern Blue Ridge mountains lies Graveyard Fields, an area known for its amazing hiking trails and two astounding waterfalls. Although the natural offerings of Graveyard Fields are abundant during the day, its best features can be seen at night. Far from the lights of Asheville and Hendersonville, Graveyard Fields, is one of the very best places to see the Milky Way in Western, North Carolina year round.

One of the very darkest places in the entire southeast, if not the country, Ocracoke, located on the Outer Banks south of Buxton has amazing beaches on the ocean side and marshland on the Pamlico Sound. With nearly no light pollution on the entire OBX views of the Milky Way are available frequently. The neighboring island of Portsmouth, accessible only by boat, may offer, if possible, even darker skies and more stars. (View Craig Dane Roberts photo of Ocracoke to see the mind-blowing views of the Milky Way.)

One of the more accessible of the beach stargazing locales in North Carolina, Oak Island, a barrier island just southwest of Southport has over 65 miles of sandy beaches to explore. Because of its expansive beaches, there are plenty of areas to find a near total dark sky. Nick Noble, nature and night photographer, shows in many of his photos the absolute epic qualities of the Milky Way in this area. It is the place to visit for those looking for their shot at seeing the distant galaxy as well as all of their favorite constellations.

Hominy Valley, NC Near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Asheville, NC, Hominy Valley is one of the better western North Carolina stargazing destinations. The area has a little bit of light pollution from the small mountain towns nestled in the surrounding valleys but it still offers a fairly dark sky. The hills here are illuminated by the lights of the nearby towns yet the sky is dark enough to see quite a bit of stars. A great combination for night photographers like Jeannine Doran, local stargazer.

Capers Island, SC One of the hideaways of the Charleston area, Capers Island is just three miles off the coast of the mainland, north of Isle of Palms and Dewees Island and just south of the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. To get to Capers you do need a boat or kayak, but once you are there you will not regret it. The island is beautiful, serene, and quiet with lots of flora and fauna to enjoy. At night, the skies above light up with stars. This is one of the very best places to see the Milky Way in the entire east coast because of its near total darkness. Adventure State The

Thirteen North Carolina Beach And Mountain Adventures To Add To Your Travel Bucket List

Many of us travel to the mountains and beaches of North Carolina every year to vacation. Most of us take advantage of the great food, entertainment, shopping, and amenities that a lot of the state’s popular tourist towns have to offer. But that doesn’t make for a complete vacation. These destinations offer one more important thing that makes traveling so great - adventure. We’ve made it easy for you and have compiled a North Carolina bucketlist with twelve amazing adventures for you and your family to remember for a long time to come. Yadkin Valley Zipline Sanders Ridge Winery and Vineyard is located smack-dab in the middle of the rolling hills of North Carolina’s wine country and creates some of the most sophisticated wines in the state. However it’s not exactly an adventure destination. That is until you head just up the road to neighboring Big Woods. Here, there is no sipping or unwinding. Instead, Big Woods, home to one of the best ziplines in the area, gets your adrenaline pumping as you speed through the air day or night (moonlight tours offered) and take in the views of the surrounding lush forests and undilating hills. • www.bigwoodszipline.com

calm lagoon-like waters of the Pamlico Sound make this area one of the best areas for kite surfing in the South. It is the perfect place for beginners entering the world of kite surfing or experts who wish to push the limits in one of the most exciting and up-and-coming adventure sports. • www.kittyhawk.com Wilson’s Creek Fly Fishing

Looking Glass Climbing

Definitely not for the claustrophobic but perfect for the curious - those who are interested in all our beautiful state has to offer, both above and below ground Linville Caverns is a must. Located near the famed Linville Falls, these natural limestone caverns offer visitors a rare view of the inside of a mountain where you can see an underground stream, stalactite and stalagmite formations, and wildlife including bats. • www.linvillecaverns.com

You see the bumper stickers everywhere. They say, “I’d Rather Be On Wilson’s” and it is 100% true. This 49,000 acre wilderness area has incredible mountain terrain, lush forests, winding rivers and creeks and wonderful hiking trails. The kayaking, tubing, sunbathing, trailwalking are great but this river was made for the fisherman. For the best fishing, explore the delayed harvest areas about two miles past the Wilson’s Creek Visitor Center. This substantial stretch is full of tweny inch rainbow and brown trout that happily take flies (pheasant tails, prince nymphs, yellow sallys, and light cahills work well here). The best part of fly fishing at Wilson’s is that you can sight cast to trophy trout because the stream is glassy and gin clear. • www.wilsoncreekoutfitters.com
