LIFE ON THE WATER I’ve wanted to publish an issue like this for a long time because, simply put, water has been such a huge part of my happiness. From days spent on the river, knee deep in riffles, stalking native brook trout to kayaking with friends in the spartina grass of the lowcountry to floating aimlessly on lovely Lake Norman, when I’m on the water I’m just happier. And after talking about the theme of this issue with family and friends it seems it’s almost unanimous: Water is good for your soul. So in honor of my favorite season—summer in the Carolinas—this issue is dedicated to all things water. In the following pages you can read about professional wakeboarder Stephen Pierce (p.142), and see a variety of his expert tricks including back flips, glides, and batwings. Fly over Lake Norman with pilot and field director of the Seaplane Pilots Association Edgar Tello and Mike Matthews of the Piedmont Puddle Jumpers (p. 156). Visit the U.S. Whitewater Center to experience flatwa-

ter and whitewater activities at their very best. While you’re there test your rock climbing skills on the Deep Water Solo—a thrilling new way to partake in the sport and one that requires no ropes. Don’t worry, if you fall you’ll simply land—with a big splash—in the pool below. For the design enthusiasts, our home chapter “The Folio” is dedicated to all things lake living including a beautiful featured home designed by Ashley J and built by Grainda. But, if for some reason after all of this you still can’t get your fill of water right here in the Queen City you can always make the short drive down to the Carolina coast where places like the Sanderling in the Outer Banks (pg. 113) or Montage Palmetto Bluff (pg.126) await. No matter how you plan on spending your time in the water this summer, just get out there and do it! Best, Brett Barter, Publisher Jon-Paul Grice, Editor

Musings

To stand before a painting by Windy O’Connor is to drift into a dream that betrays a reality you once knew in feeling rather than fact. Windy’s aesthetic, a non-subjective abstract form of painting, gives her the freedom to express herself and to pull more heavily from her life and surroundings. Inspired by figures like Pablo Picasso and Cy Twombley, she paints in a style that’s “atmospheric, mostly colorful and organic.” Of course, part of her inspiration comes from home. “I coudn’t be the artist I am without a very supportive and caring husband […] I am also the mom to two incredible and hilarious teenagers. Being their mom has been a true privilege that I cherish every day.” Her vivid, bright palette perfectly captures the spirit of summer in the south.

“I studied painting as an oil painter and it is my happy place. But, the multitude of mediums are the subjects of my work.”

What inspired you to pursue fine art? I actually went to school as a Theatre Arts Major. I started singing and doing community theatre in elementary school and continued into college. I ended up with a degree in Interior Design and a double minor in Business and Theatre Arts. I have been an artist all of my life in one way or another. What do you find appealing about using paint as your medium? Wow! Paint and all of the mediums available to artists today fascinate me. I love to discover the possibilities of what can be created. It is a quest of sorts. I studied painting as an oil painter and it is my happy place. But, the multitude of mediums are the subjects of my work.

THE CULTUR E

Musings

How does living here in the South influence your art? I am influenced immensely by my life in the South. It is in my bones. There is a quiet-yet-bold beauty in this part of the country. The landscape is so beautiful and distinct along with the change of seasons. The colorful personalities and rich history of art, design, and music. We are blessed to have so much visual richness in this part of the country. Where are you drawing inspiration from currently? I find inspiration everywhere! Museums are a great source of inspiration. The recent Women of Abstract Expressionism at the Mint Museum made me want to run to my studio and paint my heart out. I am also inspired by the act of painting: The steady practice of the work teaches me something every day. What fashion trends are you enjoying right now? I am obsessed with everything Gucci this season. It is layered, colorful, bold, and fun with an edge of preppy. The luxe mixed with casual is inspiring. I try to achieve similar elements in my work. Color is a huge element along with layering and creating textures. I may have to work on a preppy series next to continue the theme.

44 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

THE CULTUR E

Musings Where do you frequent and what do you spend your time doing when you are not painting? When I am not painting, I squeeze in some workouts, lunches with friends, and volunteer work. I have taken a class at almost every YMCA in the city and met the most amazing and unique friends dancing. Also, I love me some Hilliard Studio Method to kick me into shape! Volunteering in this community has been a big part of my life, and I am not unique in this town. This city is full of people who try to do their part and extend themselves for the benefit of others and this is just another reason to love Charlotte. Visit Windy’s studio in Southend at 2222 Hawkins Street to view and buy her paintings, or find her work—which now includes textile designs and handpainted silk pillows and fabric—at her website. info windyoconnor.net

At four years old, her mother had a glass fishbowl in the kitchen to keep all sorts of random items— anything that didn’t have a “home,” from sea glass, to marbles, leather buttons, spools of thread, and wooden beads. The toddler-aged Erin would sort through to find her favorite items and then spend hours threading various treasures on leather cords to make necklaces. “I once heard that you should think about what you really enjoyed doing as a child and that is what you are destined to do...I think that was it for me,” she explains. in all she does. She’s as excited to share her jewelry as she is to sit down and do the hard work of making it. The studio is a sleek, stylish space where finished pieces are displayed right alongside the process: heaps of beads, leather, gems, and thread. Each day, once she gets her two little ones up and ready, she walks right over from the house, and from there her days are filled to the brim with everything from administrative work to meeting with clients, working with brides to designing bridal jewelry, knocking out wholesale orders, and preparing for shows. At the same time, she has her customers coming in and out all day to shop. As busy as it gets, Erin says other than being with her young family, there’s really nothing she likes more.

Describe your process. I typically start with an image of shapes in my head. I’m not one for sketching out an image first, I like to just play around with the actual beads, wire, metal and stones to see if anything comes of it. I let the jewelry evolve into what works best. I might start with a unique coral stone and in my mind see it as an earring, but as I begin to work with it I’ll realize that it better fits as a necklace, for example. Where do you find inspiration and new ideas? Finding inspiration has changed since having children. My girls have taught me to slow down and really take a look at things in a different way. A child notices the color of a small ladybug in the grass, a reflection of a shiny stone in the sand, the shape of a leaf, the texture of a paintbrush, the personality of a sock, and the rainbows inside bubbles. I love to embrace these observations and use them to create artistic visions for my jewelry.

52 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

Do you see your two girls becoming part of the business one day? Oh absolutely! Without a doubt. My husband always jokes that i’m probably going to keep them from going to school in exchange for free labor! Coco (my 2 year old) already swaggers into the studio like she owns the place. She loves to try on all the jewelry and is just now beginning to string larger beads on string. Georgia (my 8 month baby) is about as laid back as they come, so i’m hoping she’ll just ease into the daily hustle and bustle that surrounds the studio each day. How do you think your style fits into the Charlotte market? I think that women here in Charlotte can really identify with my jewelry. I aim to design jewelry that can be worn out running errands, after a yoga class, cocktails with friends, at work and hopping around town. I also make transitional pieces that can be worn from day to night. I love for the same piece that you’re

I feel like so many of us women in Charlotte fill our days completely and don’t have much time to think about what we are wearing. What’s the very best part about what you do and what’s the biggest challenge? I’ll start with my biggest challenge: It’s most definitely balancing work and family time, and to be honest, sometimes it gets mixed together. I definitely haven’t figured it out yet and feel like there isn’t enough time for either. At the end of the day, if my husband is proud of me and my two girls know that they are my world, I think that I’m doing alright. info erinmcdermott.com

BACKSTAGE BEAUTY Makeup artist Jami Svay channels her Charlotte roots while styling the stars. words and interview SUNNY HUBLER photo JAMEY PRICE Jami Svay really embodies what you hope for in a makeup artist and hairstylist: She’s all warmth and sunshine and smiles, but she’s also completely serious about impeccable style. Svay, a real-deal Charlotte native, has built an impressive career doing what she loves, and doing it very, very well. On any given day, Jami can be found en route to a red carpet event for celebrity make-up or backstage at an exclusive fashion show. She began at the Art Institute studying fashion design before transitioning into hair and makeup, and since that shift she has worked with an array of stars, from supermodels like Brooklyn Decker all the way to Michael Jordan. We caught her applying makeup at a recent shoot for local boutique KK Bloom, and Svay was kind enough to answer our most pressing beauty questions.

“I’m just enjoying the moment and I’m grateful I get to do what I love.” What is your favorite makeup accessory? I don’t have a favorite per se, but I will be buried with a tube of lip gloss. How do you do your own day-to-day makeup and do you have any specific at-home tips or tricks for us? If you don’t have a lot of time, concentrate on things that will make a difference and make your skin pop: bright lipstick, blush, and mascara. I call it the “3 minute makeover.” It gives the illusion of a full-face of makeup. You walk out the door feeling polished and ready to rock. What kinds of occasions do you work on with your clients? Do you have any favorite types to do? My work ranges from photo shoots, to weddings, red carpet events, and TV. I love that not every day is the same. What era of makeup styles is your favorite or go to? I love the 70’s. Seriously, if I could go back in time I’d party at Studio 54 with Cher and Andy Warhol. The big lashes and glossy lips...awesome.

Are there any other people in the industry that inspire you? Pat Mcgrath. What she’s been able to accomplish in this industry... I’m amazed. Tell us about working with your clients. Nothing makes me happier than repeat clients that use me for various events. We can meet at a wedding and then they’re writing a book and need to do a photo shoot for the cover. I listen and make them comfortable while still introducing them to new beauty looks and trends. Even if it’s a one time thing like working with Karlie Kloss or The Property Brothers, I’m thankful for it all. Do you have anything exciting coming up that we should know about? I just wrapped an ad campaign for Lee Jeans premiering this Fall. It’s all a blur! People ask me all the time, “What have you been up to?” and I go blank! I have to go to my own Instagram to remember... I guess that means I’m just enjoying the moment and grateful I get to do what I love. info jamisvay.com

A NATURAL TEACHER words and interview SUNNY HUBLER photo JAMEY PRICE

Lindsay Robertson is a one-woman force for wellness, putting her own spin on yoga. Lindsay Robertson does a little bit of everything for the community: She’s an instructor at Davidson College, works for an adventure travel company where she leads trips all over the world with people who want to stay active on vacation, and teaches outside at Primal Brewery every Tuesday night. She’s the type of woman who remembers your name after one meeting, and she’s injected her yoga classes with her energy. If you heard “yoga” and are now picturing a silent room with incense burning and people sitting in stillness, you haven’t met Lindsay. She can get an entire room full of college-aged boys to focus seriously on hip stretches with a mix of her sense of humor and careful coaching, and she can crank the heat up to 100+ degrees at a studio to get a room full of adults moving in sync while she leads the class with ease. The first time Lindsay ever taught yoga at the studio where she began (Gotta Yoga of Cornelius) happened by sheer accident: She showed up to take a class, and when the teacher never showed up, she filled in. “After that, I slowly started noticing I was annoyed when work interfered with my yoga practice, so I was lucky enough to be in a position to quit my sales job and build my teaching business into a full-time job.”

60 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

How and when did you begin working with Davidson College? I started about 4 years ago, as a yoga instructor in the PE department. A recommendation of a colleague in the yoga world led me to start working with the sports teams. I started with the golf team, and then moved to more teams and professional athletes from there as I continued my higher education into yoga for the athlete. The athletes keep me on my toes because each class is customized to their needs and their training cycle. What’s the most rewarding part of your work as a yoga instuctor? I don’t have any one thing that is the most rewarding part about teaching. Each day brings different students and different challenges. I guess if I had to try and narrow it down, I really enjoy helping

“Yoga should leave you feeling empowered, ready to tackle whatever the day brings you.” women are the only ones who practice. Some people are that, however, I’m here to shout out the tight, overworked, imbalanced crowd. If you find the right instructor who makes you feel good, then it will stick. But, if you go to someone you can’t relate to and leave feeling like crap, you won’t go back. Yoga should leave you feeling empowered, ready to tackle whatever the day brings you. I’ve worked with everyone from golfers to bull riders, racecar drivers, sports players, and burly body builders. I also think a lot of people think all yoga studios are quiet, serious places. My yoga room is anything but that some days, yet totally that on others. They say your practice on your mat mirrors your approach to life, and I totally believe that. The older I get, the more I have seen and dealt with some tough s—t!

The Indigo Road (the same group responsible for SouthEnd’s latest exceptional Asian fusion spot, O-Ku) first tried its hand in the restaurant scene with the original Oak Steakhouse on Charleston’s historic broad street. It’s been a popular venture: The group has expanded Oak to Atlanta and Nashville, finally bringing the steakhouse to Charlotte by way of South Park’s Phillips Place. Oak in Charlotte looks destined to capture exactly what makes its original incarnation so darned memorable: locally and regionally sourcing from sustainable farmers—and Carolina fishermen, in particular—to accent all the classic

beats of the American steakhouse menu. Oak Charlotte’s Chef Alex Jenkins says his career owes much to Chef Jeremiah Bacon of Charleston’s Oak. Jenkins’ menu pulls from all of the bits that make the Holy City menu, while infusing it with something of Charlotte and, of course, his own tastes. “I created the menu using recipes I have gathered from my culinary journey,” Jenkins says, but he’s focused on making those recipes from what he can find nearby. “Our shrimp comes from the coast of North Carolina, and most of our produce is grown by local farmers.”

While Jenkins is taking the Oak concept and making it definitively Charlotte’s and his, he says this newest Oak is also a very much a team effort. “The Oak kitchen is unique,” he explains, “because everyone comes from different culinary backgrounds. RECONNECT It’s time to unplug and be social at South End’s newest hotspot. by JESSICA MOORE A New York City-inspired boutique entertainment house has opened its doors on Yancey Road in lower SouthEnd. Neighbors like Olde Mecklenburg Brewing, The Broken Spoke, Good Road Cider Works, Great Wagon Road Distillery and Sugar Creek Brewing have made this area a true destination for young professionals. Georgia-born owner Joe Lariscy has, with partners Reid and Daniel, crafted a sweeping gathering place filled with activities that can be enjoyed under one roof. After living in NYC for over seven years working in finance, Joe finally had the opportunity to become an entrepreneur: His inspiration for Queen Park Social started back in New York when he visited the Brooklyn Bowl on a regular basis, located across the street from Brooklyn Brewing. “We feel we are a great complement on Yancey to the entire neighborhood which continues to bring more and more entertainment in the Historic South End,” Joe explains. “Today everyone is on their cell phone constantly. We are ‘throwing it back’ to a simpler time where social interaction happens in person, over great food and drink with fun activities.”

72 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

photos JAMEY PRICE Queen Park Social is all laid-back party atmosphere, meant to lift your spirits so you can fully enjoy life in the QC with your friends, colleagues, kids, or the entire family. Location, Location, Location “We are matching a fun restaurant bar with upscale boutique elements you will see in places like New York City or LA,” Joe explains. It all starts by picking where you want to hang out. Enjoy cocktails on the plush leather couches in the game room or sit at the indoor bar in any one of their teal leather rivet bar stools or high tables. A spacious front patio houses mounted TV’s, succulent plant bowls on large tables, comfortable chairs and tables gathered together, and a bar stool table overlooking the lawn of OMB. For outdoor activities besides lounging, head out to their large grassy backyard, fenced in underneath the Queen Park cinema sign. Moving around to the different spaces is encouraged, and the list of games includes darts, skeeball, basketball, foosball, corn hole, bowling, and floor and table shuffleboard.

Food, Drink, and Live Music Joe teamed up with Carlos and Terrell to build a Gastro-Pub / Tex-Mex menu, offering about 40 items ranging from brussel sprouts and tacos to burgers and desserts. It’s really the specialty cocktails and draft list that will keep you coming back for more, though. There’s a little something for everyone. If the fun, games, food, and artwork wasn’t enough to get you here, their upcoming live music events are set to start this summer. Artwork No matter where you are in the 18,000 square foot space, you’ll see homage paid to the 1960’s industrial warehouse where the structure was kept intact with its original elements. The walls have been decorated with newspaper-style movie advertisements for 90’s favorites like E.T., Sixteen Candles, Clueless, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Fletch and more. Many of you have seen artwork around Charlotte by our talented local artists Matt Moore and Matt Hooker. It’s no surprise that they partnered up with a few other artists to create a massive mural taking up the entire sidewall of the bowling alley, appropriately worded “Be Social.” With a comic book style theme created with spray paint and acrylic, it begins at one end with a plug that’s been disconnected from an outlet showing electricity sparking outwards onto and throughout the words, lighting up the entire phrase.

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY Ice cream in small batches helps build an ever bigger (and sweeter) community in Charlotte’s South End. words COREY MILLER Not too long ago, Appalachian State alums Alex and Liz Hannah lived next to an ice cream shop in Denver, Colorado. That little neighborhood spot was their spot. It stuck with them, even after they moved back to their home state and settled in Charlotte. Their return to the Queen City found them living in a place not unlike the one they’d just left—a burgeoning community of small businesses and new ideas. But, tragically, their new neighborhood had no ice cream. So they started making some of the cold stuff themselves. “We see the same types of people and the same types of growth in South End that we saw in Denver, Alex says, scooping into a bin of handcrafted carrot cake ice cream so giddily you could be fooled into thinking he hadn’t made it himself.

76 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

photos JAMEY PRICE “That excites us, and that’s more than anything why we opened the shop here.” The couple behind the year-old Golden Cow Creamery doesn’t seem like the type of new business owners to struggle with their concept. Despite spending an entire year studying the possibilities of fresh cream, milk, eggs, and sugar, they’ve never really been at a loss for what to do with the ice cream once they had it. Many of their flavor inspirations come directly from their childhood: There is—as Alex’s Dunkaroos flavor gleefully suggests—no better inspiration for cold treats. Golden Cow’s strawberry, for instance, is exactly the kind of homemade stuff you hoped for every summer break. A creamy, not-too-pink melty mess (full of fresh berry bits)

stacked atop your choice of waffle cone, it’s perfect in its honest simplicity. The ice cream’s excellent, sure, but their primary goal has always been sharing with the people around them. People really feel that when they walk into this modern parlor on the corner of Church and Summit. It also doesn’t hurt that part of the proceeds on every scoop goes to a different local charity each month. The result of their outreach is precisely what they’d hoped. A year after opening, they’re a neighborhood destination, where regulars are more than common. “We know about people’s weddings and their car accidents,” Alex laughs. “And we’ll have that sweet kid who comes in every week if he’s good at school.” And for those resolute, old fashioned ice cream lovers in South End who still feel that ice cream’s best ever community-building opportunity was meeting on the corner for an obnoxiously loud truck, the Hannahs have something rather less obtrusive to share with Charlotteans this summer. They’re carting their summery flavors around on an ice cream bike. This new venture is every bit as sustainable and adorable as it sounds. THE SUMMER TART Justin Burke-Samson tells us how he makes his lemon marshmallow tart. words JUSTIN BURKE-SAMSON photo JAMEY PRICE This is one of the top five desserts I’m asked to make. It’s a good representation of who I am as a pastry chef: not too fussy, nostalgic but modernized, fun and bold. I spent a good year trying to find the right lemon curd that wasn’t toothachingly sweet or so sour that it was bitter. This curd is super lemony and sour, but also smooth and refreshing at the same time. I use a full cup of Meyer lemon juice and add heavy cream, so the fat mellows the tartness and rounds the flavor out. I also use whole vanilla bean rather than vanilla extract to get a fresh warm aroma and flavor. I rarely use an all-butter crust. I’m looking for depth in the crust, and usually I’m disappointed in all butter. Instead, I now add 1/2 toasted macadamia nut flour to add structure to the dough and richness to its flavor. The nut crust complements the lemon and the very subtle tropical pomegranate flavor. Then, the marshmallow meringue on top is where the sweetness comes into play for this dessert. It’s light, fluffy and screams summer nights, which is why I toast it. To top it all off, the fresh pomegranate and red currants add freshness, acid, and a pop of color. The zest is just another hit of Meyer lemon, because I think you always need more Meyer lemon. info @justinbsamson full recipe qcexclusive.com

Put it all together, and you’ve got the grown-up ice cream sammie of your dreams. The flourless cake is the highlight—it’s dense, fudgy, and not too sweet, offsetting the cold caramel ice cream perfectly. 5CHURCH BLOODY words COREY MILLER photo JUSTIN DRISCOLL 5Church is known for its brunch for good reason. Serving up Belgian waffles blanketed with pear preserves and Chai tea syrup, decadent shrimp and grits, and some of Uptown’s heartiest omelets, 5Church is a weekend morning necessity. And so is the Bloody Mary. A good Bloody only needs a couple things: a well-balanced, freshly made mix, and some damn fine garnishes. And vodka. It needs good vodka. Foundations

In the Queen City, it’s safe to say that those of us who hail from the North moved here in part because of the weather. (I speak from experience.) With warmer temps lasting for most of the year, outdoor living isn’t just a passing thought around here—it’s a whole way of life. If you know anything about outdoor spaces, you know the real way to elevate them is through perfectly exectuted landscape and design. Myron Greer, an area presence since 2002, gets this. His outdoor designs are a harmonious culmination of purpose and art, plant species chosen not just for their ornamental looks but for their growing conditions, combining perennial natives with shrubs and structural plants.

Specializing in the creation of self-sustainable gardens mixed with non-traditional plants, they strive for a very personal and hands-on approach, seeking to understand the scope of work and the client’s priorities. This customized style, in addition to all of Myron’s resources and talent, guarantees the most unique yet functional finish, resulting in a beautifully designed, sophisticated outdoor space. Myron has always cultivated a passion and joy for plants, having worked on his grandparents’ farm as a teen. This taught him to respect the growing cycle, as well as the value of growing crops for yield and food. He didn’t change his focus to ornamental plants and their use of creating space until he was in college.

Still, while he started planting at a young age, he has adapted with the change in our climate over time. “Due to the ever-real global warming,” explains Greer, “I work new introductions into the Southern garden that will perform well in the Southern region, and prove to be more self-sustainable than typical Southern favorites, such as the Mop Hydrangea.” Some of Myron’s top picks for plants that thrive in the Charlotte area are Euphorbias, Cephalotaxus, and Sedges. “I always group plants together that colonize well together,” says Greer. “This allows the plants to enjoy and perform with the neighboring plants as one, when environmentally treated the same.” While he has incorporated multiple elements into each project depending on the client, including even chicken coops, Myron’s niche is to use non-traditional plants to create very lush and self-sustainable colonies of planting beds. info myrongreer.com

Summertime on the lake practically demands a perfect porch. This property, on the Jetton Peninsula in Cornelius, was designed by JJ Barja of Elite Design Group and the interior was designed by the owners, Jim Shalvoy and Lorraine Shalvoy. Jim and Lorraine wanted an English cottage look but with their lot facing the waterfront of Lake Norman, head designer JJ Barja wanted to take full advantage of the scenery. He combined a bespoke design with custom architecture, featuring exposed wood beams as well as an old world combination of stone and brick along with a cedar shake shingle roof. To take full advantage of the sweeping Lake Norman view, a covered veranda was designed to make this area of the house inviting and cozy. The porch allows full views of the water, and is a versatile enough space that it can be used for everything from entertaining to serving as a quiet solo coffee nook. info elitedesigngroup.com

BACKYARD DREAMS words SUNNY HUBLER In summer, a backyard pool is the stuff dreams are made. And when done right, it can be way more than just a means to cool off. A proper design can completely transform a plot of grass into a personal oasis, a place you want to spend time year round. When Rick Magliocca set out to design his own outdoor area, the founder of New Life Building Supplies was sure of one thing: It had better be done to a tee. With the signature style and attention to detail that has helped him run a staple Charlotte business—

photo JOE PURVIS the go-to for contractors, DIY-ers, and practically all the reconstruction, home-building, and remodeling needs—he created an eye-catching area. The Stonecroft Park house in South Charlotte got an update with unique stonework, a carefully-laid pool, and a large fireplace that all combined to result in the perfect retreat—a place that could cover a variety of needs. Magliocca can host parties, retire after a long day, or simply escape the heat of the south. And really, what more can you ask for out of your home? We’ll take one of these pools, too, please.

A SPACE FOR ENTERTAINING words COREY MILLER photo JOE PURVIS Custom home builder Southern Cottage is known for both distinctive new builds and renovations, but this recent Lake Norman project is practically a cross between the two. Thanks to Southern Cottage, this 1993-built home situated on the Peninsula in Cornelius looks like a totally different structure—particularly from the back. Southern Cottage revamped the entire home, but this outdoor area is the real renovation. The only thing that existed prior to this job was a small deck on the rear elevation—a big problem for the homeowners, who do a ton of entertaining. And why wouldn’t they? This property is right on the water. When called upon to right this ship, Southern Cottage enlisted Harry Schrader Design for a number of architectural re-

workings, and Charlotte Pools and Spas for all for the intricate plumbing necessitated by the new pool design. The travertine tile certainly creates the requisite luxury pool aesthetic, but it’s the woodworking that really makes this home’s backyard addition easy on the eyes. The burnished upper deck and the stairs are ipe, a naturally warm-colored tropical wood that gains a beautiful patina after prolonged exposure to sunlight. And that gorgeous ceiling inside the loggia? That’s a bunch of reclaimed wood the homeowners received from a friend. Sometimes, exceptional design just comes from being in the right place at the right time. info southerncottage.net

SUMMER ON THE WATER Grainda Builders executes a mountain-style home designed for summertime fun on the lake. words DENISE LORRAINE DAVIS 104 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

photos METROPOLIS ICONIC SHOTS JULY 2017 • @QCEXCLUSIVE • 104

When your lot mimics a small mountain, it makes sense to consider mountain-style architecture to flow with the topography and terrain. Design was of utmost importance to this young couple, and they were completely methodical about each decision and selection. “For over a year, they gathered magazine cutouts and images from Pinterest and Houzz,” explains home designer Ashley Jimenez of Ashley J Design. “Their inspiration focused on home design popular in the Northwest and Midwest mountain regions. We wanted to capture that vision for them.”

106 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

The design was one thing, but the actual construction presented an entirely different set of circumstances to deal with. From the outset, the homeowners relied on Grainda Builders’ experience in managing a challenging site. The extreme slope and topography is quite common in lakefront communities that try to develop every square foot of buildable land they have on the water’s edge. As you approach the top of the driveway, the ambitiousness of the project and level of difficulty in approaching the construction is abundantly clear.

“We are uniquely qualified to handle construction challenges that blend our residential and commercial knowledge. It requires a blend of expertise with uncommon, clever ideas—an aspect that we truly enjoy about being in construction,” explains Jason Tanenbaum, VP Operations of Grainda Builders. The home is 6,342 heated square feet and 9,264 under roof. It sits about 20 feet below street level and the steep grade continues through the rear yard to the lake. Despite all this, Grainda Builders did everything they could

to minimize the use of retaining walls and the removal of existing hardwood trees on the lot. In terms of styling, the homeowner emphasized a casual feel. They wanted a formal dining room, but with relaxed design and restrained detail. There are high ceilings throughout the home; eleven-and-a-half feet on the main level with a vaulted ceiling in the living room. The kitchen is cool and crisp looking with a symphony of materials juxtaposed together harmoniously. Some details are rustic in nature such as the reclaimed hardwood beams, riveted bronze

finished copper range hood and shiplap on the island. Others lean more towards contemporary expressions, such as the white marble backsplash and modern fixtures from Restoration Hardware. “There is tremendous enjoyment in conducting the treasure-hunt of raw materials and then matching that up with the design vision of a residential project such as this one,” adds Paul Atkinson, President and CEO of Southend Reclaimed. The walkout basement features 12 foot ceilings in the entertainment, music, and golf simulator rooms.

108 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

“We wanted the walk out basement not to feel like a basement and to let a lot of daylight in,” notes Ashley. A special design feature is a sliding pocket window at the bar, so that the homeowner or a server can offer beverages to others outside in the pool area; resembling what a country club or resort might offer around an interior bar that serves a dual purpose outside. The main entertainment area focal point is a 72 inch wide remote controlled linear fireplace, which is increasingly popular in the gas hearth category. The home ex-

terior features craftsman style burgundy colored windows that make the trim pop and contrast, which according to Ashley is trending for mountain or Nantucket style architecture. It is playful, warm, and inviting. In an era when simulated materials and veneers are readily available (and in most cases more convenient to purchase and maintain), the homeowner insisted on sourcing authentic materials as much as possible throughout the home interior and exterior. They preferred natural stone, cedar shakes, and shiplap. The master

suite opens to the deck with a view of the infinity pool extending all the way to the fire pit, boat dock, and water toys. The master bath is elegantly simplistic, bright and airy with an oversized white marble shower and freestanding soaking tub. The children’s bedrooms, shared bathroom, guest suite, and entertainment/bunk room are on the upper level. A beautiful white painted shiplap hallway is anchored by a study corner with built-in desks and cabinets. The feature that the homeowners are most proud of is the SONOS wireless sound system

and the lighting key pads in every room. The house contains the latest in technology in terms of managing its critical sub-systems including security, interior and exterior Wi-Fi (extending into the lake), living space scene lightin, and music streaming. There is no doubt that luxury homebuilding is aligned with the demand for state-of-the-art technology. These systems are as robust and reliable as those installed in restaurants, offices, and other commercial buildings. “Access to music is high on the list. This home was designed with entertainment and outdoor living as priorities. Wireless systems, like SO-

110 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

NOS, that you can control for different living spaces simultaneously from an app on your phone or tablet, are particularly all the rage right now. The days of a singular sound system in one room are virtually gone,” says Mark DiPietro, owner of SoundVision. Expectations have changed for networking quality, lighting, and security systems as well. Simple routing systems are ineffective for large homes or homes built with upscale materials. Only commercial grade access points can deliver high speeds of wireless service from your kitchen to your boat (that is if you are lucky

enough to have one). New custom build projects can be designed to full blown automation, where routines such as morning and nighttime can be programmed to adjust lighting, sound, blinds, lock doors, and enable security. The success of this custom home is that the homeowners did plenty of research, knew exactly what they wanted and did not rush the design and build process. Their hands-on involvement confirms what great teamwork from the very beginning can achieve and the feeling is mutual: “Building a one-of-a-kind home is exciting,” explains the homeowner, “because you truly do get

to create a home exactly the way you want it. Ashley Jimenez and Grainda Builders welcomed our heightened level of involvement…if something didn’t fit with the vision we had for our house they would work with us to get it right.”

LOWCOUNTRY GRANDEUR The newly-expanded Five-Diamond resort, Montage Palmetto Bluff, does Southern charm like no other in one of the Carolinas’ most luxurious natural settings.

It’s a nondescript turn in Bluffton, South Carolina that leads to the nearly 5-mile-long two lane road that gets you to the Palmetto Bluff property. Once off the main road, the trees immediately close in to form the thick, distinctive Lowcountry canopy. On either side of the road, acres of land stretch as far as the eye can see, and just when it seems you’ve driven too far, the trees once again open up and the surroundings are, plainly, like something out of an old southern movie set. There are suddenly perfectly manicured homes and yards in little rows, lush greenery, and people winding through the roads riding shiny white bicycles. Pretty wooden signs replace standard street signs to direct the way to the main house, known as the Palmetto Bluff Montage. The Montage’s main property is a stately building, indiscreetly evoking the old plantation mansion style, that sits

on a sweeping 20,000 acres. The property is all old-school elegance alongside the natural beauty that defines the Lowcountry: lush greenery, palmetto trees, sea islands, and easy May River access. The Bluffton community’s newly expanded Five-Diamond resort unveiled its latest additions in the fall of 2016. The Montage added 152 new accommodations to the 48 existing guest cottages, and also added three new restaurants, two new pools with lagoon-side dining, a brand-new spa, more meeting rooms, and an expansive ballroom. The thing that stands out most about the Palmetto Bluff Montage is the perfectly executed attention to detail. The bar done in buffed mahogany, the gourmet s’mores (yes, there are house-made marshmallows) offered as you sit around open fire pits to stargaze, the Master Sommelier serving wine tableside, the Labrador puppies posted

LIFE IN THE WAKE We go to class with Lake Norman professional wakeboarder Stephen Pierce…on the water. words COREY MILLER photos JAMEY PRICE

Meeting a professional—someone who’s poured hours and hours of their life into mastery of a singular thing—is always a little intimidating. Meeting one who enjoys spinning and flipping through fresh water at high speeds… well, that kind of person, in particular, is sure to be way too cool for me. Or so I figure, as I stumble over creaky boards to meet wakeboarding phenomenon Stephen Pierce at the end of his Lake Norman dock. With the reckless-looking leap of someone who’s uncommonly accustomed to stepping between rocking boat and solid ground, Stephen disembarks a bright green Malibu Wakesetter, an older skiff bobbing opposite a sleek blue boat which is obviously the newer model. The 2017 beauty, its spotless housing shiny and reflective, looks

144 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

like it absolutely belongs in a luxury lifestyle magazine, but I’m far more interested in the weathered old green one. This 2007-made vessel has a story, and that story is a shared one. 25-year-old Stephen Pierce started wakeboarding at 14, using the green boat that’s now roaring beneath my feet, careening around the warm summer waters of the lake. We’re in his element now, and it couldn’t be more obvious. I’ve never seen someone so stoked to get out of a luxurious Malibu boat. In the decade since his start, Stephen has prevailed in the North Carolina wakeboarding scene, earning himself several significant sponsorships, including Liquid Force wakeboards and Malibu Boats. He didn’t start on the boat, though. He started on a trampoline.

Stephen performs a glide, in this case what’s known as a batwing.

“For wakeboarders, tension means control.”

THIS PAGE: Stephen’s 2017 Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV. Stephen edging and turning back into the wake. OPPOSITE PAGE: Stephen performs a wake to wake.

“Bouncing around on that thing teaches me to know where I am in the air,” Stephen explains, minutes after performing a blind landing— meaning he hit the water with his back to his tow boat. About a quarter of Stephen’s training hours are spent bouncing rather than riding. With one wipeout-defying stunt after another, it’s clear he has a sense for where he is and where he’s going in the air, but he tells me the first step to mastering this sport is knowing where you’re going in the water. To use the wake, you first have to understand the wake. Luckily for me and other lake laymen—I basically just see water moving around the way water does—Stephen has a knack for explaining what that means: He runs his own Lake Norman wakeboarding school in the summer. The nature of the water patterns thrown by your boat—edging in and out of that trail to learn how wake interacts with board—is wakeboarding 101. In his lessons to aspiring watersport young ’uns, it’s the first thing he teaches…after they’ve learned to get up onto their boards, that is. They’ll learn to jump “wake to wake” before ever attempting a board grab or a spin. Flipping, as well as the

148 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

combination of these stunts, comes much later. And the key to the whole thing (not so surprisingly, when you think about it) may be the thing linking wakeboarder to Wakesetter. “The rope is specific to wakeboarding,” Stephen explains. “Most watersports use a cord that stretches, but wakeboarders need something taut. For wakeboarders, tension means control.” So now I’m in a physics lesson: That tension and the release of it make almost every wakeboarding maneuver possible. How did a 14-yearold Stephen figure all this out by himself? “I’ve read that it takes 10,000 hours to be a professional. At anything. So I started with hour one and kept going.” Each hour has paid off. Like all the best teachers, Stephen is incredibly patient. He’s a professional, yes. But despite his obsession with flying through the air and gliding across water, he’s one of the most grounded people I’ve met. And, in any case, when you’re being jerked through choppy water at upwards of 20 miles per hour…a professional is exactly the kind of instructor you want. info stephenpiercewake.com

With climbing walls reaching impressive heights of 25 to 45 feet, all rising above the 20-foot deep pool, the facility acts as the only permanent deep water solo spot in the world. After completing the climb, without the help of ropes or harnesses, the brave climbers are released into the depths of the water below. Whitewater Rafting There is no need to travel the nation in search of an action-packed whitewater rafting experience: The action is right here in Charlotte. The USNWC offers two whitewater rafting excursions. For the ultimate thrill, the adventure rafting experience will have you reeling with adrenaline. For a more relaxing experience, try the family rafting option to escape from the bustle of everyday life and into the rejuvenating whitewater world. Whitewater Kayaking One of the major advantages of paddling at the USNWC is the consistency of quality rapids. You can partake on the channels nine months out of the year. This is certainly one of the more strenuous activities, requiring instruction and experience, and the Center provides rapids of varying levels of difficulty. If this isn’t something you’ve done before, it’s still a blast to stand on the shores and watch the experts at work.

Flatwater Kayaking Another way to leisurely explore the Catawba, flatwater kayaking and canoeing is the perfect activity for novice and experienced paddlers alike. You can take a self-guided trip or join in on a group clinic if you’re looking to learn technique. This is definitely the way to take in the more relaxing side of the USNWC, and you don’t have to have any prior experience to give it a go. Paddleboarding The Catawba River’s tranquil waters act as a picturesque backdrop for those stand-up paddle boarding at the USNWC. As one of the more family-friendly activities offered at the USNWC, stand-up paddleboarding is a sport for those of all ages and skill levels. Whether it’s for a workout, or simply to enjoy the scenery, paddleboarding is universally enjoyable. Small group clinics and one-on-one classes are available for those looking to perfect their skills. Whitewater Race Series One of the best things about USNWC is the frequency with which they host races, events, and concerts. This summer, you can partake in the Whitewater Race Series, a yearlong series of competitions that take advantage of all the different property’s amenities. Here’s a sneak peek at a few of the events this summer. Whether you’re participating in the race itself or just cheering on in the crowd, these events are a per-

OVER THE WATER QC Exclusive takes flight with seaplane pilots Edgar Tello and Mike Matthews. words COREY MILLER photos JAMEY PRICE drone photos JOE PURVIS

It’s not until we’re bump-bump-bumping along the runway, quickly gathering takeoff speed, that my pilot tells me the amphibious sports aircraft about to lift me into the air is a ripe 70 years old. With an involuntarily quick swivel, I turn to look at Edgar “E.T.” Tello. “Really?” I blurt through the bulky radio headset weighing down my ears, trying and failing to sound as thrilled (and undaunted) as he is by this revelatory fact. E.T. just grins. We’ve no time for further discussion. He continues speaking over the radio things he’s examining, making his way down some checklist only he can see. All of these things are required for a successful takeoff—but I couldn’t possibly say what half of them were. As the North Carolina Field Director of the Seaplane Pilots Association, he surely knows what he’s doing. One of the last things we do, incidentally, is close the front windshield. I hadn’t really considered what

leaving that open might mean. Now I’m glad he closed it. And suddenly: The dewy green of the Long Island Airport runway is gone. There’s nothing below us but western Lake Norman, waxing splendid in the dawn light. We’re ascending quickly, but I can’t feel it. This little aircraft is defying gravity, but it doesn’t seem like gravity’s putting up a fight. “I thought small planes weren’t smooth flying?” I ask, incredulous, watching the sun climb slowly above the Catawba trees and into the sky with us. E.T. cracks a knowing smile again, not the slightest bit perturbed by this little plane myth. “They’re the smoothest.” If everyone knew how absolutely blissful this experience is, they’d be crowding up the airspace. Way up here, I’m realizing quickly that the satellites never get it right. There’s a life to the land below us that those big space camera’s just can’t capture. These views are the real aerials: The

earthy blues and greens of Catawba, North Carolina are splayed out below us like a multimedia canvas whose paint never dries. Morning mists swirl through the woodlands, creeping through the shaded regions to hide from the sun’s everwidening rays. The occasional early-rising boatsman arcs across one of the many cool, quiet coves, and the rest of Lake Norman—looking much like an Edenic nature reserve from up here—sleeps. And then there’s another plane on the horizon. “Morning, E.T.,” comes the calm voice of Michael “Mikey” Matthews over the radio. Mikey is co-owner of Piedmont Puddle Jumpers, a flight school based on Lake Norman. He dragged himself out of bed before dawn to come fly with us. An hour ago, before we had our wings, before we made friends with the sunrise, I would’ve thought him crazy. Now, I realize it must’ve been thoroughly frustrating to wait for the light—Mikey’s plane isn’t night-equipped.

160 • QCEXCLUSIVE.COM • JULY 2017

E.T. is constantly aware of Mikey’s position, even pointing the Puddle Jumper out to me when he’s far away. I can’t see him. Bad eyes make bad pilots, I guess. Now the white plane sidles up to us. We’re flying in formation, a technique that E.T. tells me takes years to learn. And then we land, side by side, on the water. For the second time today, I can’t believe how idyllic this all is. We’ve got ropes and an anchor in the back seat, for mooring ourselves to an island or dock. I must be looking at these tethers rather mournfully: E.T. laughs, and starts the engine back up. info piedmontpuddlejumpers.com seaplanepilotsassociation.org

Be on the lookout for more high-flying features in an upcoming issue. Corey Miller will delve deeper into the individual stories of these two pilots and the Piedmont Puddle Jumpers.

ougar Run Winery is more than just a wine-producing enterprise: It is a gathering spot for wine enthusiasts of all sorts that offers a truly decadent tasting experience. Tom and Deb Filkins dreamed of opening their own winery after retiring, but the dream became a reality much sooner than expected after the economy plummeted and Tom’s work as a project manager changed drastically. They began their earliest forays into the art of winemaking, and the Filkins’ home basement was quickly filled with over 1,200 bottles of homemade wines. A charming industrial building located in Concord, North Carolina proved the perfect place for Tom and Deb to follow their

tasteful passion. Today, the winery hosts a wealth of community events, such as Ladies Nights, Music Nights in the Courtyard, Paint and Sip nights, and the “big party” featuring treats from local bakeries to accompany signature seasonal dessert wines. “We believe two things here at Cougar Run Winery,” Deb begins. “The first is that life is too short to drink wine you don’t like. The second is that, when it comes down to it, all you really need to know about wine is ‘do I like what is in my glass?’ The rest is all fun, but truly optional.” — Hours of Operation: Tue 12–6pm | Wed-Sat 10–6pm Sun 1-5pm

enny Boy Brewing Company was founded upon owner Townes Mozer’s passion for fermentation. Since 2011, the brewery has been crafting an extraordinary variety of kombuchas and beers. Now, with 29 open taps at 3000 S. Tryon Street, the brewery is any ale lover’s paradise. “I knew the kombucha market was growing,” Mozer says. “And Charlotte, at the time, was in the midst of a conscience cultural shift—shopping at farmer’s markets, eating and drinking local—and I knew I wanted to come back home to Charlotte and make an impact.” The now thriving business took off after Mozer developed a newfound

appreciation for all things local, cultural and, most importantly, tasty. After creating and perfecting recipes in his free time, Mozer, along with head beer brewer John Watkins, decided to add beer production to the Lenny Boy lineup. Now, Lenny Boy is home to favorites such as the Citraphilia IPA, the Burn Down for What Sour Ale, and the Lavenderade Kombucha. The shop also hosts many events worth checking out— with Run Club Sundays, Yoga Saturdays, and frequent live music performances, Lenny Boy Brewing Company’s more than just a brewery. he folks at The Unknown Brewing Co. distinguish themselves with their passion, attention to detail, and overall craftsmanship. Whether it’s their “Over The Edge” American IPA, “Ginger Wheat” American Wheat, or the “Pre-Game” Session Ale, when you see the distinctive “?” on the side of a can, you know there’s quality beer inside. Unknown requires a high standard from all of their brews—even their new non-alcoholic Craft Ginger Ale. The local ginger ale was made by sticking to the roots of what truly makes any ginger ale great. The team started with hand-peeled ginger, then added lime juice, real cane sugar, water, and other natural flavors.

The ingredients come together to provide you with the most refreshing ginger ale you’ve ever had. Sip it alone or use it to enhance your cocktails. Owner Brad Shell said he’d tried a variety of different ginger ales with his cocktails and everything tasted overwhelmingly artificial. “So I thought, why not create a ginger ale that is not only refreshing by itself, but light enough to enhance a good mixed drink?” — Taproom Hours Tue–Thu 4–10pm | Fri 3–10pm Sat Noon–10pm | Sun Noon–8pm Brewery Tours: Wed & Fri 6:30pm

In 2013, after cobbling together a little cash and building themselves an apple press, the duo was in business. Today, they are Western North Carolina’s first hard cider, and they craft delicious ciders using local fresh apples, and no artificial flavors, colors or ingredients. It’s even naturally gluten-free. Noble Cider offers a full range of traditional and new American ciders and meads. Their Standard Bearer cider won multiple awards, including a spot as one of

Craft, in South End, has become a dynamic force: It’s a place for a fresh, healthy bite, a buzzing beer garden, a haven for beer lovers, and both a grocer and growler shop. “I love to source beer, meats, and cheeses locally as much as possible, and I love to form relationships with other food and beer people like me,” Dan explains. With one of the best selections of local brews around, Craft is a force to be reckoned with—and it shows no sign of slowing.
