A Tradition of Excellence Continues
For driving enthusiasts who insist upon opulent luxury combined with sublime performance, Bentley Charlotte presents the Bentley Flying Spur. Upon examination of every detail both inside and out, the craftsmanship that is unique to Bentley is sure to amaze. The exhilaration then continues when one eases into the hand-stitched A-Grade leather seat and feels the subtle yet puissant rumble of the Flying Spur’s 6 liter 12-cylinder engine which launches drivers from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds. Combining the brute strength of a heavyweight boxer and the elegance of a ballerina, the new Flying Spur demonstrates why, even after nearly a century, the synonym for automotive excellence is still “Bentley”. To truly appreciate all the Flying Spur has to offer, we invite you to visit Bentley Charlotte.

LESSONS FROM

Six things I’ve learned about fashion during the production of our fashion issues.
I
t’s that time of year again. That time of year that intimidates the hell out of me. Tis’ the season for our fashion issue. Fashion, along with art, food, home and design, travel, and sporting, is one of QCExclusive’s primary pillars of content. However, to be brutally honest, it’s the pillar that I know the least about and the issue that I always meet with hesitation. I always was a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy. Never gave much thought to brands, styles, trends. Never knew about all of the intricacies that were involved in making clothes, selecting fabric, designing, styling, etc. Never considered that fashion could be connected to a person’s confidence, a person’s joy. Never knew fashion’s pervasive influence on design, entertaining, and philanthropy. With three of these issues under my belt now, I’ve realized several things. 1) For most of my life I’ve completely underestimated the widespread impact of fashion and the fashion industry. 2) Although my personal style still struggles, I have a new found respect for the vogue. 3) Not only do I respect those that create (like Stan Frazier of Straight Stitch Co.) I admire the skill and precision that it takes to make well made clothing. 4) Modeling is far more difficult than it looks and those that are really good at it have a truly special talent. 5) Our town is entrenched in and influencing the national fashion scene. 6) Production of this issue could not occur if we couldn’t lean heavily on the style experts in our community. Their knowledge is so integral, their designs so intrepid. They are the key to the success of this issue. With that said (or written), a special thank you goes out to all that helped from hair and makeup artists, models, and stylists to designers, tailors, shop owners and everyone in between. We hope you enjoy. Sincerely, Jon-Paul Grice Brett Barter Publishers

“I know what I’m fighting for.” Cancer made me realize I’m fighting for my family. For my friends. I don’t want to miss out on all the things that are important to them ... because that’s what’s important to me. Pam was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2013. When Levine Cancer Institute’s state-of-the-art transplant unit opened in 2014, her journey took a positive turn. Her husband and kids stayed with her in the unit’s family-friendly rooms, with her parents right around the corner. World-class care, with a personal touch, made all the difference.

ictoria Schweizer has had a multitude of life experiences that would equal that of ten women. No profession or hobby is off limits for Victoria, and in her current life chapter, she has decided to add professional artist to her repertoire. Although she has always had an eye for art and a creative hand, she has only recently decided to sell and donate her art. As no surprise to anyone who knows her, she not only survives in her new role, she thrives. This current chapter for Victoria takes place here in Charlotte, where a group of friends and a job opportunity at NASCAR were her reasons for moving from New York City. “I moved here in May of last year and couldn’t love a city more. I was immediately surrounded by wonderful new friends and felt very welcomed.” 46 • qcexclusive.com • Sept/Oct 2014

“I’ve had a few ups and downs in my life and that’s why painting brings me such joy. I’ve used it as a therapeutic tool to get me back to center, seen my artwork raise much needed funds for great charities and bring a smile to so many faces.”
After dabbling as a lawyer, movie co-producer, publicist, and broker a simple birthday card drawing for a friend awoke her dormant inner artist. She started private commission portraits after that through word of mouth before painting and selling her first celebrity portrait in a gallery in New York.

“I painted a 36” x 60” portrait of Lady GaGa and put it up in my NYC gallery the morning of its grand opening party and it wasn’t but an hour later someone walking by had come in and purchased it. I was incredibly flattered and happy it found a home so quickly.” Victoria primarily uses acrylic paint for her portraits but from time to time she will also throw in some ink, watercolor, or mixed media elements like newspaper. Her upcoming show of celebrity portraits includes mug shots of celebrities as well as a variety of other celebrity paintings. Her recent move to Charlotte has inspired some country musician celebrity paintings. To add to her list of many hobbies and passions, Victoria Schwiezer donates a lot of her time to charities. To date, she has donated over 50 paintings to several different charities and has raised over $250,000 for them. When asked her favorites to donate to she says, “I love working with Make a Wish Foundation and St. Jude since both deal with little kids. I’ll pretty much do anything to bring a little bit of happiness to a child dealing with a terminal illness.”

Her mission is to be able to continue to paint and donate her works to silent auctions worldwide. Half of her proceeds from all of her private commissions go to charities of the buyers choice and she continues to raise awareness, organize charity events, and donate money to a variety of charities worldwide. Including Victoria, no one is quite sure what the future holds for this budding new talent, but one cannot dispute the happiness we feel when viewing her work and participating in her causes with every purchase. “I’ve had a few ups and downs in my life and that’s why painting brings me such joy. Sarah Belk Gambrell is helping empower women across the world.
G BY MELISSA JUSTICE PHOTO BY JAMEY PRICE
enerations of women from around the world have continued the fight for basic human rights; among them the right of autonomy, the right to live free from domestic and sexual abuse, the right to an education, the right to financial independence, and the right to a voice. The cultural norms ingrained in societies that shackle women can be defeated but only by standing in solidarity. Strong, passionate women; women who have been raised to be leaders, those who have climbed the corporate ladder, experienced the board room, those who have juggled life with all its ups and downs: single, married, or divorced— with or without children, these are women who have made it their mission to pass on a legacy of confidence, leadership, and commitment for others. Sarah Belk Gambrell is one such woman. A graduate of Sweet Briar College, she is the daughter of W. H. Belk Sr., founder of the Belk Group stores. She has served as Vice Chairman and President of various Belk Companies and has been Director of Belk Inc. since 1998 (Businessweek.) Belk Inc. opened its first flagship store on East Trade Street, Charlotte in 1895. “People traveled great distances to shop at Belk for the latest fashions. Belk was a leader in fabrics and fine threads and that was a big draw,” says Gambrell. “Traveling to Charlotte was a planned event and the shopping experience at Belk was wonderful.” Quality of service was a primary goal set forth by her father. The store expanded to nearly a city block after acquiring “prime space” with Tryon Street frontage. “There was won-

derful energy and great pride in Charlotte during that time.” Gambrell’s early days in the fashion industry were spent visiting the factories and learning how items were made and how the garment industry worked. She enjoyed these visits and, as her father, “she developed a respect for high standards and products constructed with quality. Now in her mid-90’s, she still follows fashion trends via Women’s Wear Daily and as a member of the International Fashion Group in New York.” For decades, Gambrell has been one of Charlotte’s biggest philanthropists. “Giving back has always been important to me. There is great joy in giving. Everyone needs to participate and personally engage in giving especially to worthy organizations they believe in and organizations with good leaders.” With that said, Gambrell is active and very fond of the arts and community organizations. She is a Board Member for a vast number of organizations, such as the YWCA Central Carolinas and NYC, Parkinson Disease Foundation, Columbia-Presbyterian New York, North Carolina Community Foundation, Inc., Cancer Research Institute, and Dress for Success, Inc. She also serves as trustee at several schools: Queens University, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Trinity Episcopal School. Besides her involvement in these organizations, Gambrell has received honorary doctorates from Erskine College, UNC at Asheville, Furman University, and Johnson C. Smith University. Often referred to by her daughter Sarah, as a female Hugh McColl (McColl was a banking pioneer, who led the efforts to revitalize Charlotte) Gambrell is no stranger to trailblazing. ReMixology Andy Maurer of Soul Gastrolounge is transforming the Queen City’s cocktail scene.
The word mixologIST is an Americanism which first came on the scene between 1855 and 1860. By 1872, it appeared in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary with a simple definition: a person skilled in the making of mixed drinks. During the 19th century, bartenders were masters of the trade, understanding the different spirits and mixing their own tonics and bitters. Sometime after Prohibition, the art of craft cocktails declined and the classics were set aside. Side Cars, Old Fashions, Highballs, Manhattans, Pink Lady, Mary Pickford, and Dubonnet Cocktails were replaced with the Gin and Tonic, Screwdriver, and Martinis.
ing that there was an entire movement dedicated to recreating prohibition cocktails, and I wanted to be a part of it.” Creating a cocktail is not just about “putting ingredients together and making it fruity and great tasting. There is actually a whole formula to it, 100’s of years of theory behind it all.” Maurer calls it the “Mr. Potato Head Effect.” “You have a cocktail that’s built with four parts, and when you interchange similar parts you get an entirely new cocktail.” As a mixologist who enjoys experimenting, Maurer is “forced to think in an entirely new way.” “Infusing spirits with other herbs to acquire new tastes,” making his own tonics and bitters, and “creating things from the ground up is the only way to create new things.”
In the late 1980’s and 90’s, the classic cocktail made a comeback. Once again, bartending grew into an art form, dependent on interpretation and focusing on the classic cocktail. Cocktails possessed attitude, taking on a life of their own at the hands of their creator: the barchef or mixologist. One such creator manages the bar at Soul Gastrolounge in Charlotte, NC. He is Andy Maurer, Mixologist Extraordinaire. According to Maurer, Charlotte lacks an innovative cocktail program. With a population estimated at close to 800,000 people, “Charlotte has an international airport, craft breweries, James Beard nominated chefs, but all everybody drinks is Red Bull and Vodka.” While the rest of the world is experimenting and bartenders become bar-chefs, “it’s not done here.” Loving a challenge, Maurer, whose background is in large volume bartending and working with martini lists 50+ long, began researching and learning how to make classic cocktails from Prohibition. “I wanted to know where they came from, and how they were made especially since you couldn’t get booze. I saw through read-
After having been to other cities with bigger audiences and more access to spirits, Maurer’s colleagues have advised him to “think new.” And, that’s exactly what he does. Everything Maurer uses is fresh and pure. By growing things from the ground up, he can control the taste. “People want

It contains Hennessy cognac, bitters, ginger root, and fresh raspberry. Maurer loves his work and enjoys sharing his cocktail infused world. HOME&DESIGN
Make the decor transition from summer to fall seamlessly by taking these five spaces into consideration.
TRANSITIONS
The Bedding As night temperatures drop into the 50s, a major priority should be to switch your bedding. Layers upon layers of comfort and color can be added to fully transform your bed in both aesthetic and warmth. Adding themed pillows and a throw can complete the ensemble. Cottage Chic in Dilworth and Isabella in Myers Park have wide selections of sophisticated bedding and are must-visits when selecting your fall sheets, comforters, pillows, and throws. The CurtaiNS
The Table
The Patio
Fall tablescapes are all about the details. Apply the various natural elements of this season into your table and your guests will take notice. New tablecloths embracing the colors of the season; burnt orange, mustard, browns, are a must. Centerpieces don’t have to feature pumpkins or leaves to fit in with the season. Rich wood elements like branches can add a little natural flair. Small, oddly shaped gourds and nuts are a great alternative to larger pumpkins. Chargers and runners made from material like hemp, burlap, or other fibers can really add a nice texture to the table. Do-it-yourselfers have plenty of options throughout Charlotte for tablescape elements but for those that want to get it just right, we recommend contacting an interior designer like Jaclyn Ehrlich, Dickey Choate, or Traci Zeller.
For most, as summer comes to a close, outdoor activities move inside. However, the seasonal change from summer to fall should have the adverse effect. The sticky, hot summer temperatures are dropping making way for gloriously cool evenings and mornings perfect for dining, entertaining, or just simply relaxing. Break out the fire pit that’s been stored in the garage all summer long and use it to warm the cool night air and illuminate the evenings perfectly. Outdoor heaters also add to both the ambiance of your area and the comfort of your guests. Seasonally colorful outdoor pillows, wreaths, and other outdoor décor add to the spirit of the season. Then sit back and enjoy the natural colors of fall. Blackhawk Hardware is just one of many great options for your fall outdoor décor needs.

When it comes to décor that offers both aesthetics and function, curtains probably come to mind last or close to last but that changes now. A beautful patterned curtain perfect for the season can change your room completely while adding so much warmth to your living areas and saving lots on that dreaded electricity bill. For the largest selection of beautiful, lightly used curtains we suggest heading to Classic Attic. The Hearth
Whether you have a wood-burning fireplace or a gas fireplace, get it ready for heavy usage. People gather around it to tell stories, sit by it to read, or warm up by it when the mercury drops. Because of the high traffic around the fireplace during the fall and winter, be sure that your hearth is a priority. Add elements like seasonal plants, flowers, and pine cones. Lanterns and candles at the base of the hearth add even more light and ambiance. Antlers and natural elements are becoming increasingly popular to decorate the hearth with as well. Aside from décor, be sure to have your fireplace inspected each year to be assured that it is functioning correctly. Hearth And Patio is a great source for all your fireplace needs. There are several things to keep in mind when preparing your garden for the upcoming autumn season and luckily for you we’ve got it covered. The SOIL First things first. You have to get rid of what remains of your summer garden. Once the weeds and other material is removed begin to till the soil of the garden. You want to get around a half a foot of clean usable soil. Once the garden is prepared fertilize the soil. PLANTING
Now you are ready to plant your fall veggies. Plant your seeds deeper than 76 • qcexclusive.com • Sept/Oct 2014
you would in the spring, around five inches from the top of the soil. Over the top of the seeded soil, lay down burlap to shade the seeds and keep the ground moist.
Insects and weather are the two things you have to be very careful of when it comes to your garden in the fall. Be certain that you keep a keen eye on your garden. Obviously, if you have strong plants that have no obvious problems then there is no need to use a repellent but if the insects do attack, things like seaweed spray are good alternatives to pesticides. For frost protection be sure to monitor the weather for lowering temperatures and then cover plants with newspaper, burlap, or natural material like mulch or pine straw. HARVEST
WATER
If you do not have an irrigation system set up, which most people do not, plan on watering often. As the late summer in Charlotte is still very hot your new seedlings will need plenty of moisture. Each week, three times a week, light,
Be sure that you harvest all of your vegetables other than root vegetables before the second freeze of the year. For root vegetables, protection from the elements like straw and mulch can extend their season into December and beyond. Photo by sandde beautheil

uard Veltman of Ruard Veltman Architecture believes that a successful project should not only focus on the outside structure but on the larger picture itself. “I believe that architecture is created from the inside out, each design is a creation of space which in turn is enhanced by its building materials and furnishings.” This is important when considering the role of Julia Palen Wood of Veltman Wood Interiors. Veltman, as the principal architect and owner of Ruard Veltman Architecture, teamed up with Wood in 2010 to form an interior furnishings division to the architecture firm. Thus, Veltman Wood Interiors was formed with Julia Palen Wood serving as lead interior designer. With forty years of combined experience in their appropriate fields and ten years working together, Veltman and Wood are a perfect team This fit can be seen in stunning creations throughout Charlotte and beyond. When starting a project, the pair lean on their extensive background in architecture and design, agreeing that the most important aspect of a project’s dawn is the client’s lifestyle. Both believe that understanding their client’s personal style while meshing their traditional yet modern aesthetic, is essential. Veltman notes, “We enjoy building with anything 80 • qcexclusive.com • Sept/Oct 2014
that is real. Playing with different textures within the same materials is always fun and interesting.” When the Purdy’s approached them with their long awaited renovation on Pomfret, the creative process began. Having already lived in their American Georgian home for a decade, the Purdy’s had plenty of time to think of and plan their perfect renovation. Their main goal: they wanted their house to feel welcoming, warm, functional, unique and timeless with beautiful details for all stages of life. With these parameters set, they gave Veltman and Wood full reign to redesign their home and fulfill all of their wants and needs currently as well as for generations to come. Considering the Purdy’s passion for entertaining, it was important for the home to have an open, circular flow, both inside and out. Veltman and Wood incorporated these ambitions from the genesis of the design to the final execution, and because of that attention to detail, these qualities are pervasive throughout every room of the home. The Purdy’s living area is a striking space. Although still very much open, it is now full of private nooks that fit in seamlessly, offering the family and their guests much needed space to retreat. The floor-to-ceiling custom bookshelves and niches invite you to read or take a nap. The gorgeous wood walls and ceiling in the living area are painted a dark color. This richness draws you in, comforting you while you enjoy

the many amenities of the room. A custom-built on-site “U” shaped sofa, fabricated by Morgan Chair and covered in outdoor Holly Hunt fabric is a comfortable, beautiful, and functional piece that finishes the room auspiciously. The Purdy family is very much into competitive sports making a game room a must. For inspiration, the Purdy’s stumbled upon a photo of a Parisian room with large arched doors that they fell in love with. According to Veltman, “This image had historic architectural elements yet was furnished with simple, modern furniture.” Veltman and Wood successfully incorporated aspects of the photo along with their own unique twist to the final design. The end product, astounding. The game room pool table was an original piece of furniture owned by the Purdy’s that Veltman Wood Interiors restored to blend with the casual elegance of the room. With help from American Billiards Co. in Charlotte, they replaced the felt and were able to re-stain the base. Veltman Wood Interiors also worked with John Phillips Metal Works in Montgomery, Alabama to achieve the custom curved rods and brackets which allow the floor-to-ceiling white linen custom drapes by Custom Window Treatments to fully envelop. Veltman’s favorite room in the house is the formal dining space, requested specifically by the Purdy’s. The room’s design began around an existing cupboard owned by the Purdy’s. To complement the cupboard, Veltman Wood Interiors designed 82 • qcexclusive.com • Sept/Oct 2014
a beautiful, custom 6ft x 8ft dining table. A hint of traditionalism showcased by a parquet tabletop pairs well with the modern, clean lines of the table’s base, making it a statement piece for any dining room. Above the table, another statement is made. The alluring arctic pear chandelier from Ochre illuminates the room. It too provides a modern interpretation of a classic. The powder room also fits seamlessly into the home. The sink ledge is upholstered in a matte metallic vinyl with nail head trim which mirrors the glamor sheen of the tile. The modern white sink bowl is paired with an old English style faucet and is yet another design juxtaposition that seems to work flawlessly in this house, a house created and successfully executed to the Purdy’s needs and desires. Julia reiterates,“The Purdy’s had given a lot of thought to how they lived. During our program they were able to describe how they wanted the house to function without designing it. They have told us often that the new design works exactly like they imagined for everyday family use and for entertaining 20 to 200.” Her advice to those considering a custom renovation,“Try to list your priorities. Occasionally something has to give to achieve a higher priority. Consider how you live in a home and how you would like to live.” For more information or to view the Ruard Veltman Architecture portfolio visit www.ruardveltmanarchitecture.com.

The southern brand is back with a vengeance, crafting high-end apparel right here in the North Carolina textile capital.
O F
I
In the beginning, there were two brothers, George and Joe O’Bryan. After having fought side-by-side in the Civil War, they returned home to Nashville, Tennessee where they planned to appropriate the surplus tent material produced by the Confederacy and start an apparel company. The tents were made of duck canvas, a sturdy material that the O’Bryans’ felt would be perfect for making overalls and workwear; hence the name “Duck Head.” The company was “Southern born” and “forged in the U.S.A.” With a sense of pride, Duck Head produced locally made denim and duck canvas overalls, canvas pants, and khakis from their Nashville factory. During the World Wars, the company expanded production making uniforms for the U.S. Troops. 150 years later, Duck Head has experienced both highs and lows. During the 1980’s and 1990’s sales were up, and up big. The brand was at an all-time high; a staple for both the preppy southern college student and young professional. However, in the early 2000s, Goody’s purchased Duck
Head as its private label and moved production overseas. This was a “bumpy” time, as sales dropped substantially, and ultimately, in 2009, the company was forced to sell the brand. Now, once again housed in the South, the new owners have revitalized Duck Head by returning it to its roots. President and CEO, Thomas J. Nolan moved the company headquarters to Greensboro, NC. With the “re-launching and re-branding” of Duck Head, Nolan is “confident [that] by bringing back [the] authentic, southern, American made brand, Duck Head will once again emerge as a leader.” The decision to re-

turn to the South was logical. The rich history of “the textile industry between Burlington and Cone Mills is tremendous,” says Nolan. “It’s natural that an apparel company would be here.” Located in the Triad, Duck Head is perfectly situated, its production and distribution center within close proximity to FedEx ground and air hubs. As the O’Bryan brothers set forth 150 years ago, the same strategies are still in effect. Duck Head believes in quality, craftsmanship, authenticity, and Southern heritage. Their labels proudly say “Made in the USA.” With the fashion world’s constant pursuit of trends, Duck Head dedicates itself to being authentic to the original O’Bryan brothers’ line. “Fashion is ever changing. We will never chase it,” says Nolan. “We’ll just be who we are and stand by the principles the O’Bryan brothers set for us in 1865. Where that takes us I’m not 100% sure, but it’ll be a fun ride, and we will remain authentic and true to who we are as a brand.” As consumers, you can expect high quality goods. Each piece is “stretched, cut, and stitched from the timeless classic pieces that have come to define the recognizable Southern style.” Design team members work hard to create the
very best items and incorporate the finest materials. “For us, there is no other option,” says Nolan. “Our line will grow at the appropriate time. There is something to be said about being the best at what you do and not trying to be all things to all people,” says Nolan. “We know we’ve got a great brand.” Duck Head will launch new products in the future, but only when “the time is right.” For Nolan, perfecting the current items and building trust with consumers is the company’s main focus. “I think that means something to people. I want to be associated with authentic brands, not brands that come from nowhere and have no soul. We’ve got a soul.” For further information on the historic southern brand and its reemergence visit www.duckhead.com. If you’d like to get your hands on some authentic Duck Head apparel, stop in at The Sporting Gent, the only Premier Retail Partner in Charlotte where Duck Head is sold.

lothes making is in Stan Frazier’s blood. His mother, a talented dressmaker in New York, has designed and crafted intricate pieces for some of the most luxurious brands in the world. When Frazier was just thirteen, his mother gifted her son a brand new sewing machine. He was a natural. Now, years later, the Brooklyn born and bred Frazier is still sewing away. In the back of his Cedar Street shop in Charlotte, Frazier produces some of the most well-made denim jeans, bags, shirts, and more, all incorporating high quality selvedge denim. Decades ago, large denim companies switched from a traditional shuttle loom that produces selvedges to one that was over twice the original’s size in order to mass produce jeans. The benefits for the large companies were obvious; they could make more jeans at a lower cost, utilizing less material. However, the overall quality and finished edges on those jeans suffered. Recently, in the last ten years, selvedge denim has made a huge comeback. Fashion capitals around the world like Japan,
Italy, and Turkey specialize in selvedge, producing a high quality traditional denim that is less likely to fray or ravel, is far superior in wear, and looks amazing. Stan Frazier of Anarke (a-nark-e) Jeans Co. and Straight Stitch & Co. is a selvedge denim fanatic. He is a true believer in

Fit and detail are his main priorities with the
brand. From the pockets to the interior fabric to the buttons, each handmade pair of Anarke jeans features a strict attention-to-detail. Along with pants, the Anarke brand offers fun tees, sophisticated bags, well-made shirts, vests, and more. Frazier, unlike other brands also allows customers to do minor customization and alteration, a service that many of his clients appreciate. For those that need more than minor customization, or those that want a to-
tally custom jean, Stan Frazier can accommodate through the services of his company Straight Stitch & Co. Frazier, a denim enthusiast, noticed a void in Charlotte’s custom jean marketplace and decided recently to fill it with his Bespoke program. This program allows clients to create their unqiue desired jean. They can choose virtually everything from the particular type of denim style and weight, to the size and type of pockets, patches, buttons, rivets, hems
(lock stitch or a chain stitch) and more. This comes at a premium of course, but for those that wish to have a truly custom, superior pair of jeans this a perfect option. Frazier has made this process astoundingly simple with a quick turnaround. Simply visit Straight Stitch & Co., make your selections, get fitted, and within a week you can have your brand new, personalized, handmade pair of premium jeans. Whether you need a well-made pair of

It’s often been said that for all the many great things that Charlotte has to offer, style is not one of them. If you are of that opinion, we respectfully disagree. Granted, Charlotte is not on the same scale as some of the bigger cities that are considered fashion hubs like New York, Los Angeles, or even Atlanta, but we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you step into some of these shops and are able to find the same brands and lines that are typically only found in larger markets.
