Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

Charles Peirce classiffied signs into icons, indexes and symbols. According to Peirce, an icon is a material expression of the qualities, functions and properties, while the materiality has no relevance to its performance. An index is a sign influenced by dynamic object, having a binding relationship between form and content which is not explicit. A symbol is a sign which delivers arbitrary and immatrial realtionship between form and conten. Diagrams is different. ‘Their performance depends on how they are deployed.’ Zeara Polo defined a diagram as a tool which ‘describes relationships and prescribes performances in space’. The diagram has has a spatial correlation since it is not only in three-dimensional space but also in other dimensions of reality. It is believed that a very simple diagram can generate very complex organisations.

Precedent Analysis

Figure.02

Figure.03 The Burnham Pavilion by Zaha Hadid looks like a cocoon. I traced lines in plan and persepective views to be the framework of this shell-shaped pavilion in Illustrator and then import them in Rhino. By using the command ‘sweep2’ and ‘loft’, I tried to model fabric skins around the frame.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

Herzbeger holds the view that the design should not only create neccessary conditions but also encourage the forms to play different roles to realise differentiated usage. In order to create more possibilities for people to use the space, the pavilion has two threshold in different shapes. These two openings can let people and sunshine in. The pavilion is located in a public square so the opennings can be functioned as the connection and seperation of the public space and relatively independent space. The pavilion is shell-shaped, the irregular space allows people to move freely and randomly. The pavilion has two skins. The outer layer with openings on the top brings daylight in to create a bright, translucent space. The inner surface is used for video projection.

Isometric

North West Isometric The modelling process took me about one and a half week to finish and improve. For the model, I chose to focus on the openings and the shell-like framework. Since the pavilion is consist of inner and outer skins, both of skins should have openings. In so doing, the sun can shine in. When modelling, I realise that circulation is of high importance in architecture. At the same time, the threshold should provide more possibilities for people to use the space. The structure of this pavilion is complex, but the parallel frame reduced construction difficulty to some extent. For Zaha’s pavilion, the circulation is not only expressed by the flow of people through a building but also through the use of a core area. The thresholds are two entrances and openings of top layers. The form of threshold is curvilinear. The form of the whole structure is fulid because of the threshold and the flowing circluation.

Diagrams

Circulation

Threshold

The circulation shows the movement of people and how the form of pavilion influence the walking path.

Threshold shows the entrances as transition space for people to move from public space to a relatively independent space where encourages public discourse. The openings are also the connection of exterior and interior spaces.

Appendix

Process

Instructed by the lines given by lms, the basic model done.

Then trim the surface to get the openings which bring sunshine in. Rendered mode can display the shadow.

7

Appendix Process

The grey pattern is the half open space which also links outside and inside.

These two perspective views show the entrances which let people and air flow in and openings on the top.
