YEAR IN

Review Queensland Performing Arts Centre 2017

PAGE 1

As Minister for the Arts, I acknowledge and thank the QPAC team, led by Chair Professor Peter Coaldrake AO and Chief Executive John Kotzas, for ensuring Queensland’s reputation as a cultural destination continues to grow.

PAGE 2

QPAC is Queensland’s centre for live performance, and its reputation extends beyond our own state – to national and international audiences and industry. There were many highlights from QPAC’s 2017 program. I particularly mention the Australian debut of two works from England’s The Royal Ballet – Woolf Works and The Winter’s Tale – both of which were performed exclusively at QPAC for the 2017 International Series. The Royal Ballet, one of the world’s leading ballet companies, also performed a special one-night gala performance in Cairns to share their work with a wider Queensland audience. Queenslander’s love of musical theatre was supported with a big year of productions at QPAC including Kinky Boots, The Wizard of Oz, American Idiot and MAMMA MIA! In 2017, the Queensland Government funded $2.3 million upgrade of QPAC’s

Cremorne Theatre was completed to provide an enhanced experience for patrons and delivering on our commitment to invest in arts and cultural infrastructure. QPAC is part of a thriving arts industry in Queensland. As the state’s leading live performance centre, QPAC works collaboratively with many companies to build the capacity of the arts in Queensland. It contributes to a vibrant and diverse industry that provides entertainment and enrichment to audiences as well as employment, training and career paths to many Queenslanders. QPAC’s support of local arts companies helps celebrate and showcase the breadth of artistic talent in our state. The Queensland Government recognises the value of the arts in helping make Queensland a great place to live and an enticing place to visit and do business. I am proud to support QPAC in carrying out its core mission of enriching the lives of Queenslanders through art and look forward to another fantastic year in 2018. LEEANNE ENOCH MP Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Minister for Science and Minister for the Arts

Congratulations to QPAC on a wonderful year of captivating arts and cultural performance in 2017.

2017 was a busy and extremely exciting year for QPAC, perhaps best exemplified by the outstanding success of a richly curated program of events and performances comprising 1 145 performances attended by 1.3 million patrons. The Australian premiere of Woolf Works and The Winter’s Tale by The Royal Ballet was a particular highlight and demonstrated the strong reputation of QPAC internationally in bringing this prestigious company to perform exclusively in Queensland. New productions including American Idiot and Mozart Airborne were created in collaboration with leading Queensland arts companies, and The Mabo Oration commemorated a quarter of a century since the landmark High Court decision recognising Indigenous land rights with a special panel discussion featuring prominent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and native title experts. The smooth operation of a bustling performing arts centre relies on the capacity of its team working together to ensure that, to paraphrase a theatre saying, the show goes on. We extend our particular thanks to the Queensland Government for its continuing commitment to the performing arts, and place on record our gratitude to both the Premier, The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, and our Arts Minister, The Honourable Leeanne Enoch MP. The Queensland Government’s investment in culture in our State is strong and critically important for the continued growth of the creative sector as an integral building block for Queensland’s future. We would like to take this opportunity to warmly acknowledge the great contributions of QPAC’s previous Chair, Christopher Freeman AM, and other Board Members – Simon Gallaher,

Sophie Mitchell and Kylie Blucher – who concluded their appointments on the QPAC Board in 2017. Along with fellow Board Members, we look forward to building on this already impressive foundation and to guiding one of Queensland’s leading cultural institutions in the years ahead. To our partners, sponsors, donors and philanthropists, so much of what we do is about collaboration and, with your support, we have been able to extend the breadth and reach of our program. To our loyal QPAC Members who are our passionate advocates, your ongoing support is highly valued. And to the many producers, presenters, artists and companies that come through our doors each day, we would not be here without you. Thank you, everyone. As we look to the future, there are new ventures and new opportunities on the horizon. Our focus is on expanding our reach, in particular expanding regionally to truly be Queensland’s performing arts centre, and to focus on engagement internationally, nationally and locally, and with Indigenous communities. There are many exciting programs to look forward to in 2018, including QPAC’s signature events taking place between June and November – Out of the Box and the QPAC International Series. We hope to see you at QPAC for these, and many more events in the future. PROFESSOR PETER COALDRAKE AO Chair

JOHN KOTZAS Chief Executive

About QPAC

PAGE 8

Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) is one of Australia’s leading centres for live performance. Welcoming over 1.3 million visitors to around 1 200 performances in 2017, we embrace the best in live performance – the world renowned alongside the emerging, local and new – and connect to the stories and ideas at the heart of each production. Through the warmth and expertise of our staff, we have become a trusted curator, presenter and host; a place to come together to relax, reflect, share stories and celebrate. QPAC is located in the vibrant cultural and educational precinct at South Bank, Brisbane that encompasses the Cultural Precinct (QPAC, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Museum and State Library of Queensland) as well as Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, Opera Queensland, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and extending towards West End with Queensland Theatre, QPAC’s Merivale Street Studio (a rehearsal and studio space for QPAC and its companies in residence) and Queensland Ballet. This precinct is unique in Australia in size and character. At the heart of QPAC’s activities is the aim to cultivate excellence in cultural thinking, planning and delivery and help build the success of art in Queensland. QPAC strives to be a place that is readily accessible, filled with people learning, exploring and having fun.

QPAC has four theatres suitable for a range of performance styles: Lyric Theatre (2 000 seats) is designed primarily for opera, ballet and large-scale theatre events such as musicals; Concert Hall (1 600 seats) is a versatile space, designed primarily for orchestra performances and also ideal for contemporary music, stand-up comedy and presentations; Playhouse (850 seats) is primarily designed for theatre and dance; and Cremorne Theatre (277 seats) is an intimate and versatile black box theatre space. In 2017, the Cremorne Theatre underwent an extensive refurbishment – the first time for this theatre since QPAC opened in 1985. Food and culture meet at QPAC with a range of dining and bar options available around the Centre. The Lyrebird features contemporary Australian cuisine showcasing creativity on the plate; this is QPAC’s flagship restaurant. The Bistro sits within QPAC’s Cascade Court and provides tasty family favourites. Adjacent to this is The Cafe, open daily and offering a relaxed escape from the CBD. Set on the Melbourne Street Green, The Cafe offers fresh and seasonal produce also hosting Green Jam on Friday afternoons. The Russell Street Wine Bar is located in the Ground Floor Foyer of QPAC’s Playhouse. As well as dining outlets, QPAC’s Foyer Bars provide space for audiences to meet and share experiences before and after performances. QPAC’s Functions and Events team create events with a different perspective and opportunities to gaze upon Brisbane’s twinkling landscape. Outside of the four theatres, there are a variety of unique and versatile event spaces at QPAC.

QPAC’s vision is to create a lifetime of unforgettable live performances for all Queenslanders.

OUR PLACE

QPAC is a place dedicated to the experience of live performance. Set within the unique South Bank precinct, QPAC utilises its location to work with partners from across the Cultural Precinct, South Bank, Brisbane and more broadly from around Australia and beyond to attract the best artists and artistic collaborators. Through digital technologies and other means, including touring works produced and co-produced by QPAC, QPAC is able to extend the reach of the centre beyond South Bank into regional and remote areas of the State. Connecting audiences with arts experiences, no matter who or where they are is integral to QPAC’s mission of engaging people and enriching lives through live performance.

QPAC is built upon the ancestral meeting grounds of Australia’s First Peoples. In continuing to use this land as a focal point for cultural life in the city, QPAC acknowledges and celebrates the rich tradition of the land as once dedicated to expressing creativity, telling stories and connecting with others.

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is one of the world’s most revered and recorded chamber orchestras. Their return to QPAC in 2017 was part of a national tour by the orchestra.

OUR PROGRAM

PAGE 26

This is the primary way the public understands who we are and what we do. The program reflects our respect for and understanding of our audiences and our interconnectedness with the broader arts industry.

Telling Australian stories, creating opportunities for young and emerging artists to find their voice and contribute to the rich legacy of Australian art is important. QPAC invests and supports new works which in turn creates meaningful arts experiences for our audiences and provides pathways for our artists to remain working and creating in Australia. This Year in Review reflects on the many performances and events that shaped QPAC in 2017 and is a reminder of the transformative power of art to shape communities, audiences and the world.

PAGE 27

QPAC’s performance program embraces the best in live performance. As a venue, a producer, an investor, a presenter and a collaborator, QPAC delivers a broad program to reflect and enrich all lives.

QPAC International Series The QPAC International Series links Brisbane to the world’s greatest stages and feeds a growing desire in Australian audiences to experience the preeminent artists of our time.

The 2017 QPAC International Series featured England’s Royal Ballet. A phenomenal success acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, The Royal Ballet presented two original works, Woolf Works and The Winter’s Tale in QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, as well as a gala performance in Cairns following the Brisbane season. Both Woolf Works and The Winter’s Tale had not been performed by The Royal Ballet outside the Company’s performance home of Covent Garden in London. Queensland audiences embraced the works which demonstrated the scope of The Royal Ballet as one of the world’s leading companies. The performance by The Royal Ballet in Cairns at Munro Martin Parklands was the first time the company had performed in a tropical outdoor venue. The one-night gala performance extended the reach of the visiting company to regional Queensland and enabled audiences outside Brisbane to experience this leading international company firsthand. This was the first time QPAC toured an international company to Cairns as part of the QPAC International Series.

PAGE 29

PAGE 28

Since it began in 2009, the QPAC International Series has reached a collective audience of 140 000 people, drawn around a third of audiences from outside Brisbane and generated a combined economic impact of more than $20M. The high profile seasons have directed national attention towards Brisbane showcasing the city and state as an attractive cultural destination.

In 2017, an extensive program accompanied the performances in the Lyric Theatre including one of the largest community projects undertaken by QPAC and The Royal Ballet, We All Dance – a community dance project bringing together community groups from a range of diverse backgrounds with teaching artists from The Royal Ballet as well as Queensland. Other elements in this curated program included creative insight sessions with choreographers from The Royal Ballet; masterclasses; conversations with creatives and academics unpacking the themes seen on stage; and an exhibition about creating costumes for dance called Made on the Body.

PAGE 31

PAGE 30

The QPAC International Series is more than what you see on stage; QPAC creates multiple connection points between artist and audiences. As part of the 2017 season, QPAC curated a program of events and activities to connect with as many people as possible across the state. This program offered different ways to connect with the on stage productions as well as explore the ideas, themes, artists behind them. The program included live events, exclusive digital content and streamed activity created specifically for audiences, artists and communities across the state.

OUR AUDIENCES AND COMMUNITIES

For contemporary performing arts organisations, bringing productions to the stage is not enough. QPAC has both an obligation and a desire to create value for our audiences and communities by contributing to our society’s cultural, social and intellectual development. Great public institutions reflect the communities they work for. Key to achieving this is developing an understanding of who makes up our audiences and communities, their interests and drivers. While QPAC’s audience mainly reflects the demographic make-up of South East Queensland, where the majority of our audience is from, QPAC also uses digital platforms to engage with a wider community. QPAC seeks out ways to find points of connection and meaning-making while promoting cultural literacy and demonstrating the public value of arts and culture.

PAGE 33

PAGE 32

Performing arts centres bring together audiences, artists and communities and variously function as performance houses, meeting places, community centres, national icons and vibrant sites of civic and cultural expression.

OUR ORGANISATION AND PARTNERS QPAC is a space that brings together artists, provides a platform and stage for artistic works and collaborations, and connects artists with audiences.

Critical components of our organisational capacity are our staff, partners, sponsors and donors. To innovate and grow our staff have the right combination of skills and are united by a shared vision cultivated by a culture of safety, collaboration, curiosity and fun. In order to extend the reach of all that QPAC does, we need to unlock the potential of our relationships with partners, sponsors and donors, to bring them on the journey with us and to develop two-way creative partnerships. QPAC’s ongoing success also relies on the many partnerships and relationships with Australia’s network of producers and presenters who are responsible for touring performances nationally. Building and maintaining a robust industry is important for QPAC but also has wider implications; the vitality of art in Australia is a collective responsibility.

PAGE 43

PAGE 42

In order for QPAC to innovate and grow we need more than just great ideas, we need the capacity to implement them. We want to be equipped for real innovation, to be truly adaptable and creative.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY AND GROWTH Vital cultural organisations deliver on mission and create impact and public value. They do not deliver at the same scale and in the same way year on year. They are nimble, resourced to adapt and change and they reinvest in themselves. Our financial capacity underpins our ability to invest, expand and try new things or old things in new ways. To this end, we are committed to working with partners, from all sectors, to achieve results and amplify impact.

PAGE 49

PAGE 48

The development of new works is a huge undertaking and carries with it some risk but it is important in building the capacity of the arts industry and in telling our stories. As a leader in the arts in Queensland, QPAC prepares for industry growth and supports and collaborates across the sector.
