WINTER 2013 JUNE JULY AUGUST

welcome

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to QPAC this winter. QPAC is Brisbane’s home of live performance and in the pages of this edition of @QPAC you will find a diverse range of performances showcasing the best in local, national and international talent. We start the season with the Bolshoi Ballet which performs in Brisbane exclusively as part of the QPAC International Series, a partnership between QPAC and Tourism and Events Queensland. The Bolshoi Ballet is one of the grandest and most well-known ballet companies in the world and has not performed in Australia for almost two decades. This visit has been highly anticipated by many ballet fans around Australia. Later this year we will be making an announcement about the next company to perform as part of the QPAC International Series. Together with the Queensland Theatre Company (QTC) QPAC has an agreement to develop, produce and tour new works for and by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The next work in this series is a re-imagined Mother Courage & Her Children. Bertold Brecht’s morality tale is moved from seventeenth century Europe to a near future set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic Australian desert. QTC Artistic Director Wesley Enoch and Paula Nazarski have worked together on this new translation which has its premiere at QPAC’s Playhouse. Local companies including Queensland Ballet, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Opera Queensland and Queensland Theatre Company appear in our winter line up along with national touring productions including the latest from Bangarra Dance Theatre and Australian Chamber Orchestra. Children and families will have the chance to enjoy a show during school holidays with international drama War Horse and the whimsical Slava’s Snowshow Snowshow. This season also brings some truly outstanding international performers including Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Chucho Valdés, Sir David Attenborough and Valentina Lisitsa. I look forward to seeing you at QPAC in the coming months.

Exclusive Bolshoi Ballet: Le Corsaire Inspired by Lord Byron’s epic poem, The Corsair Corsair, which sold ten thousand copies on the first day of publication, this threeact ballet was first performed at the Bolshoi in 1856. With a revival of the original Petipa ballet in 2007 by Yuri Burlaka and Alexai Ratmansky, this modern adaptation is a swashbuckling, romantic tale of pirates, slaves and oriental intrigue, typical of the exotic and ambitious ballets created during the Tsarist era. This extraordinary work, which the Bolshoi regards as one of the signature pieces of its exceptional repertoire, has never before been seen in Australia, another coup for Brisbane. PERFORMED WITH THE QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.

Bolshoi Ballet: The Bright Stream In 1935, Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century, wrote an original score for a ballet called The Bright Stream. Set on a farm it delighted audiences but did not find favour with the Soviet authorities, especially Stalin who thought the subject of collective farming too serious for a light-hearted and joyful ballet. It was banned and not seen again until it was revived by the brilliant young choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, a former leading dancer and artistic director of the Bolshoi. An overnight smash hit in Moscow and subsequently in London, New York and other capitals to which it has toured, it’s a comedic rural romp that incorporates dazzling Cossack and other ethnic dances as well as a side-splitting cross-dressing spoof of classical ballet. The Bright Stream will charm, delight and surprise Australian ballet lovers and it too will be seen only in Brisbane. PERFORMED WITH THE QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Blood Brothers Blood Brothers is one of the most popular and longest running British musicals of all time, having played on the West End for over 24 years. Blood Brothers tells the tragic story of Mrs Johnstone and her two sons Mickey and Edward, who are separated at birth and concealed from each other only to be accidentally brought together again years later through an unlikely friendship. As they grow, their lives continue to intertwine, although the deep divisions between the privileged life of Edward and Mickey’s poverty-stricken existence drive a deep wedge between the two. As they try to conquer the social divisions which hinder their friendship, they must deal with the harsh realities of class consciousness that lead to the play’s shocking conclusion.

Mother Courage & Her Children BY BERTOLT BRECHT TRANSLATED BY WESLEY ENOCH AND PAULA NAZARSKI

Bertolt Brecht’s epic morality tale about the ravages of war is given a unique twist by Queensland Theatre Company Artistic Director Wesley Enoch and Paula Nazarski in a dazzling new translation. Instead of the Thirty Years’ War of 1600s Europe, this near future incarnation of the age-old story is set against the bleak backdrop of a post apocalyptic desert where Mad Max might be at home – an Australia ravaged by devastating conflict, where life is cheap but business is still business.

Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange To mark the 50th anniversary of Anthony Burgess’s literary cult masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange tours Australia in a high octane, muscular and arresting production direct from sell-out UK performances. This award-winning all-male cast is breathtaking in its treatment of the ultraviolent and highly sexual text and makes for testosterone-filled, electrifying and astonishing theatre. A Clockwork Orange lures its audience into the glorious glass-edged nastiness of Manchester’s underworld. An unapologetic celebration of the human condition, this is the story of little Alex and his Droogs in their battle against the tedium of adolescence. Supressed violence and sexual desire mix in a dangerous and damaging cocktail as the young men battle through the difficulties of youth.

A deeply hedonist piece, A Clockwork Orange explores sexuality, masculinity and aggression through contemporary music, exquisitely executed movement and the notoriety of Burgess text. It features a soundtrack of Gossip, David Bowie, The Scissor Sisters, Placebo and of course Beethoven.

Venus in Fur The end of a long day of casting, and playwright-director Thomas (Todd Macdonald) can’t find the right woman. He needs beautiful-sexy-articulate, young, with a ‘particle of brain’. He needs someone to play a mistress, but has endured a parade of 35 misfires.

As the director takes a chance and allows her to read anyway, the balance of power tilts between actress and director, mistress and slave. Thomas and Vanda become two people handcuffed at the heart in David Ives’ deliciously sassy, sexy, character-driven power-play.

Thomas is adapting Venus In Furs, the infamously kinky 1870 novel by Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch – the etymological father of masochism. It calls for a purring, confident dominatrix.

Take direction: Submit, and spend an evening at the mercy of Venus in Fur Fur..

He gets more than he expected when the raging storm blows in Vanda (Libby Munro) – late, frazzled, with the very litany of the flaws he just decried. She talks of Venus in Furs as one might talk of Fifty Shades of Grey – nothing but throwaway S&M porn.

Brian Cox

Sir David Attenborough is arguably the world’s best-known natural history film-maker, a much loved naturalist and broadcaster whose career has spanned nearly six decades. He is the quintessential intrepid traveller, sometimes changing continents mid-sentence.

His TV programs are ground breaking – he has the innate ability to make highly complex matters enormously entertaining and easy to contemplate. He’s the former rock star of the hit band D:Ream, who scored UK No. 1 in 1994 with the song Things Can Only Get Better.

Sir David Attenborough – A Life on Earth will again take audiences on an incredible journey through his extraordinary life, his untold stories, the evolution of filming techniques and his passion for bringing us closer to nature.

His live events are a wonderment of an entire new genre – his experiments, audience interactivity, stunning visuals and totally engaging manner leaves audiences enraptured, engaged, informed and perhaps besotted by him. He is the real deal. Brian Cox, OBE, is a British partical physicist and a Royal Society University Research fellow. He works on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Switzerland and is a Professor at the University of Manchester. So, when Southern Cross Soloists invited percussionist Timothy Constable (an absolute audience favourite) to take part in this concert, it was with excitement that he agreed to participate as both guest soloist and composer. ACO Barefoot Fiddler

ACO2 , the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s precocious little sister orchestra, embarks on its first national subscription tour, led by Richard Tognetti, featuring international guest cellist Daniel Müller-Schott and combining Australia’s finest emerging string players with ACO musicians.

A free spirit who approaches music with an unquenchable sense of fun and discovery, Patricia Kopatchinskaja is a joy to watch and hear.

Featuring several of the greatest works for string orchestra including two Vivaldi Cello Concertos, Handel’s Concerto Grosso No.11, Rautavaara’s The Fiddlers and Stravinsky’s Concerto in D, this program showcases ACO2 ’s virtuosity and vivacity, in high-octane Baroque and neoclassical music.

Patricia performs Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue, Bach’s Concerto for three violins, Mendelssohn’s violin Concerto in D minor and a haunting work by Argentinian composer Ginastera, featuring solos for five of the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s principal musicians. QSO with Cislowska & Fritzsch

QSO with Demidenko & Fritzsch

Cislowska’s thrilling virtuosity, tantalizing harmonies and soaring themes.

Demidenko’s fire, Rachmaninov’s drama and Dvoˇrák’s dynamic symphony.

Suk admired the music of Dvoˇrák, his father-in-law, and this richly orchestrated, feel-good Scherzo is a charming fantasy with shimmering harmonies in the vein of Fauré and Chabrier.

Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto is so embedded in our culture it’s surprising the composer experienced such a crisis of confidence when composing it. Lush, teeming with memorable tunes and orchestral drama, the work’s heart – the melting second movement – is the emotional soundtrack running through David Lean’s 1945 film Brief Encounter. More recently it features in Clint Eastwood’s film Hereafter. Hereafter

Dvoˇrák’s structurally ambitious Seventh Symphony burns with nationalistic fervor and the Slavonic people’s eternal resistance to invasion and oppression. From its very first hearing in London, conducted by Dvoˇrák, it has been a resounding hit. Leading Australian concert pianist Tamara Anna Cislowska’s thrilling virtuosity is the perfect foil for Rachmaninov’s tantalizing Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

QYO – Romeo & Juliet

QYO – War Requiem

Romeo and Juliet presents music inspired by Shakespeare’s immortal love story, one of the most popular of all piano concertos and a work by one of Australia’s leading composers.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s birth, the Queensland Youth Symphony performs his extraordinary War Requiem. The composition is closely linked to the words of the traditional Catholic Requiem, alongside war poems by Wilfred Owen.

Opening the concert is Moti Perpetuo by Australian composer Wilfred Lehmann. Commissioned by QYO in 1992, this is an energetic work with references to the virtuosic string repertoire. Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is a hugely popular piano concerto and its grand orchestral opening, romantic melodies and rhapsodic episodes continue to thrill audiences throughout the world. The soloist is 22 year old Quang Hong Luu, former winner of Brisbane’s international Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition.

The Queensland Festival Chorus and soprano mainly sing the words of the Mass while the tenor and baritone sing the words of Owen’s poems, accompanied by chamber orchestra. The Vocal Manoeuvres Children’s Choir represent innocence and the unchanging and sing a beautiful element. Please join the soloists, choirs and orchestras under conductor John Curro as they perform one of the most powerful and moving pacifist works ever written.

Finally, the second suite of Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet ballet music features seven movements including Montagues and Capulets, The Child Juliet Juliet, and Romeo at Juliet’s Grave. PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND YOUTH ORCHESTRA WHEN WHERE TICKETS

Tools of the Trade Tools of the Trade explores the world of ballet costume from the many shapes and styles of the tutu to the indispensable pointe shoe. Featuring costumes from the QPAC Museum collection and on loan from the Queensland Ballet and The Australian Ballet, Tools of the Trade will take you on an enchanting journey through the styles and traditions of ballet costumes. The origins of ballet began in the court spectacles of Italy and France during the Renaissance and Baroque. Here, the elaborate and fanciful versions of floor-length fashionable dresses worn by the female dancers may have looked spectacular, but restricted movement.

The rise of Romanticism in the 19th century was soon reflected in the ballerina’s costumes. Marie Taglioni’s costume for La Sylphide in 1832 combined a tight fitted bodice with a layered gauze skirt revealing stiffened pointe shoes. A new style was set. As dancers became more skilled, and the audience more attentive, the tutu developed its many different variations during the century, influencing the costume of today. Today’s ballerina wears many different costumes, but the tutu, in either the stiff short frill of net or the softer romantic style, has endured a lasting place in the ballet tradition.

In the late 18th century Marie Camargo shortened her skirt to reveal her ankles and feet. A scandal resulted and a revolution began. PRESENTED BY QPAC WHEN WHERE TICKETS
