WINTER 2012 JUNE JULY AUGUST

welcome This winter at QPAC is a rich celebration of art, creativity and fun featuring a combination of popular works and new pieces together with some of Australia’s and the world’s leading companies and artists. Starting with the Out of the Box Festival (or perhaps one would say ending with it if you turn over this edition and review the special Out of The Box reverse edition), there is a particular focus on our youngest artists and audiences. This year’s festival marks 20 years since the inaugural Out of the Box Festival and two decades of creating and presenting lively, meaningful and imaginative works for children. A partner of the 2012 National Year of Reading, Out of the Box features four productions based on celebrated children’s story books including The Flying Orchestra by Queensland author Clare McFadden. This world premiere performance is directed by internationally renowned puppetry artist Peter Wilson. In August we will welcome The Hamburg Ballet, the Hamburg State Opera and the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra in their first visit to Australia. The Hamburg Season is the first presentation in QPAC’s International Series, a partnership with Events Queensland that will deliver some of the world’s leading companies in exclusive, annual Brisbane seasons. The Hamburg Season includes two concert performances of Wagner’s Ring Cycle opera Das Rheingold Rheingold, a one-off performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 The Resurrection, three performances of John Neumeier’s celebrated ballet Nijinsky and a one week season of The Hamburg Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Our concert line up across winter also brings back to Queensland some of the finest soloists including Australian artists Tom Burlinson, Guy Sebastian, Tommy Emmanuel and Tina Arena, as well as international artist Melissa Etheridge as part of her first Australian tour since 1996. Following their recently marked 1000th performance in Australasia we are pleased to welcome the much anticipated musical JERSEY BOYS: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons to the Lyric Theatre in July. In the Tony Gould Gallery, La Stupenda and friends celebrates the rich history of opera in Brisbane. The exhibition features costumes worn by the late Dame Joan Sutherland from the iconic 1965 season at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Brisbane and explores the development of opera in Queensland since that landmark season. This exhibition is timely as we continue in June with the first Opera Australia Brisbane season in over two decades, as we welcome The Hamburg State Opera in August and as we near the 2nd anniversary of the Great Dame Joan’s passing in October.

The Hamburg State Opera with the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra: Das Rheingold Richard Wagner’s epic Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring Ring) is a towering example of 19th century Germany’s artistic legacy. Wagner spent 26 years on the composition of The Ring, which comprises four separate operas designed to be performed in sequence. Although Das Rheingold is the first opera in the series, its libretto was the last to be written. Conducting the Hamburg State Opera and Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra’s concert performances of Das Rheingold is celebrated Australian conductor and Hamburg Philharmonic Musical Director Simone Young. The first woman to conduct a complete Ring Cycle in 1999,

Simone has since led complete performances of the Cycle in Berlin, and most recently, Hamburg. Simone will lead the Hamburg State Opera, of which she is also General Manager, alongside guest singers, some of whom have performed at Bayreuth, the theatre where the first complete Ring Cycle was seen in 1876. The Last Five Years

Menopause The Musical®

WRITTEN AND COMPOSED BY JASON ROBERT BROWN

IN CONCERT

The Last Five Years is a contemporary song cycle that ingeniously chronicles the five year life of a marriage, from meeting to break up...or from break up to meeting, depending on how you look at it.

This joyful musical parody set to classic tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s will have the audience cheering and dancing down the aisles.

Cathy and Jamie’s relationship has lasted five years. As the story begins Cathy is at the beginning of the relationship and Jamie is at the end. With inter-cutting scenes, we watch Jamie move forward in time as Cathy moves backwards. The Last Five Years is an intensely personal look at the relationship between a writer and an actress told from both points of view. Winner of the 2002 Drama Desk award for outstanding music and lyrics, The Last Five Years is an unforgettable musical experience. Don Quixote

THE IMPERIAL ICE STARS

The Nutcracker on Ice When do dreams become real? Choreographer François Klaus offers a different take on the legendary story by Cervantes in this inventive production.

The world’s premier theatrical ice skating company, The Imperial Ice Stars make a triumphant return with their dazzling new production of The Nutcracker on Ice.

The ballet, Don Quixote, is being filmed, and the dancer performing the title role feels such an affinity with his character that he plunges himself into reading the original tale. In his dreams, he becomes the famous knight and is transported into the wonderful world of the Don’s illusions, where he performs chivalrous deeds, seeks glory in battle, and gives his heart to the beautiful Dulcinea. But the Don’s grand exploits are all in his head, and he is blissfully unaware of how much amusement this creates.

The Nutcracker on Ice will thrill audiences with breathtaking high-speed leaps and throws and awe-inspiring acrobatics, coupled with the most graceful and sublime ice dancing. Boasting a 25 strong cast of Olympic, World, European and National Championship skaters, The Imperial Ice Stars are set to once again astound and mesmerise audiences with their adrenaline-rich, dramatic performance, all within the intimate setting of a frozen theatre stage.

Back on the film set, there is a sparkling performance of highlights from the traditional ballet. With stirring music and spirited dance, this Don Quixote is a gentle reminder of the great power of imagination.

The singer’s honest and confessional song writing style paired with her bluesy rock-infused vocals has seen her rise to the top of the musical spectrum since her 1988 debut album Melissa Etheridge, which is certified triple platinum in Australia and double platinum in New Zealand. Since then, Melissa has continued to tour constantly and has released a total of ten studio albums, and has recently launched the daily Melissa Etheridge Radio Show for broadcast throughout the world.

Fanfare Grand Final Concert

Tommy Emmanuel

The Fanfare Grand Final Concert is Education Queensland’s premier performance event for Queensland state school bands and orchestras.

Two-time Grammy® nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected musicians with a professional career spanning five decades. Relentless touring has garnered Emmanuel hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. Guitar players of all levels come to his shows to witness the magic hands of the ‘Guitar Wizard of Oz,’ but his appeal goes far beyond musicians. His unique style is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a band for melody, rhythm, bass and drum parts, Tommy plays all that – and more – on one guitar.

This year over 740 ensembles nominated to perform at Fanfare Festivals held state-wide during May and June. From these performances five ensembles have been selected to perform in this year’s Grand Final Concert. The ensemble giving the best performance of the evening will be presented with the prestigious Erica Brindley Memorial Trophy. The Fanfare 2012 Grand Final Concert celebrates excellence in instrumental music by young musicians from Queensland state schools. Come along and support these young instrumentalists as they play their way into the history books.

Special guest, Italian-American Frank Vignola is widely regarded as a monster player and composer, and has played with everyone from Les Paul to Madonna, Donald Fagen to the Boston Pops.

QSO with Eivind Aadland

QSO Romance and Passion

Roger Woodward, whose Bach performances were described as the most searching since Glenn Gould’s, makes his only Australian appearance in his 70th birthday year. The Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor, Eivind Aadland, returns to conduct Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, the crowning glory of the great Austro-Germanic symphonic tradition which began with Haydn and Mozart. The Ninth is a work of genius, with passages of anguished beauty juxtaposed with mock-gaiety and sardonic wit. The final adagio is one of Mahler’s most profound and moving statements, full of majestic resignation and far from earthly tribulations.

What is this thing called love? Whatever it is, it certainly makes the world, and music, go round. Love and romance have been the most powerful source of inspiration to composers of all ages: the euphoric love of Romeo and Juliet... even Beethoven (forever unlucky in love) who Juliet entrusted his love song to a solo violin. Eivind Aadland, Kang Wang, Milica Ilic and QSO, spiced with a few typically wry comments from the permanently lovestruck Guy Noble, explore some of music’s pinnacles of passion.

In her homecoming debut with Richard Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra de Niese sings Mozart’s Exsultate jubilate, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden and a specially commissioned Australian work. QSO: Mendelssohn – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

ACO Trout Quintet and Quartet for the End of Time

A reprise of the popular event of 2011; savour the best moments from William Shakespeare’s woodland comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Felix Mendelssohn’s immortal and atmospheric score. Complete with soprano Milica Ilic, mezzo-soprano Georgia Hawes, actors from 4MBS Classic Arts Production and the Sola Voce Women’s Chorus, the performance includes the famous Overture, the meltingly beautiful Nocturne and the brilliant Wedding March.

The Australian Chamber Orchestra perform two great works inspired by very different experiences away from home, both written for the musicians available and, as a result, for unusual combinations of instruments. Aged 22, Schubert had his first holiday in the country. In the Trout Trout, he captures the mood of those carefree summer days and his ecstatic delight in the countryside, in warm, beguiling melodies and harmonies. A prisoner of war, Messiaen wrote the Quartet for the End of Time for the musicians he found in the camp, premiering it to an audience of inmates and guards. ‘Never’ he said, ‘was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension.’ Critic Alex Ross calls it ‘the most ethereally beautiful music of the 20th century...as overpowering now as it was on that frigid night in 1941.’

QSO with Piers Lane

QSO Great Favourites

Leonard Bernstein’s Candide Overture is the musical equivalent of opening a bottle of champagne, while George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F radiates all the confidence and brashness of 1920s New York, with art deco skyscrapers and dazzling neon signs. Piers Lane, who regularly inspires the critics, performs this concerto, a spectacularly successful marriage of jazz-inspired idiom and classical form. However much Dvoˇrák may have been captivated by the big sky and wide open prairies of the US when he wrote his New World Symphony, the lilt and freshness of this most beloved symphony tell us that his heart and soul remained in his native Bohemia.

These you have loved. We’ve assembled your favourite pieces from our Music on Sundays programs over the years, the melodies which may have changed your lives and become the ones you want to hear more and more. Swoon to the strains of all your old favourites by composers including Mozart, Elgar and Tchaikovsky, all packaged together with the incomparable Guy Noble hosting the event.

Southern Cross Soloists RHAPSODY

George Gershwin’s iconic piece, Rhapsody in Blue, was one of the first mainstream piano concertos to bridge into the world of jazz. Starting with the famous (impossible to play) clarinet glissando, it is a fun, brilliant and virtuosic feat for all. This program will feature two other Rhapsodies: Debussy’s Premier Rhapsody for clarinet featuring Southern Cross Soloists member Paul Dean, and Dean’s own composition, Rhapsody for Southern Cross Soloists – a world premiere. Paul has insisted on the inclusion of the contraforte (a groundbreaking re-invention of the sometimes awkward

contrabassoon) in his piece, which will be performed by contraforte expert Brock Imison of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. The Southern Cross Soloists will be joined by Principal Trumpet of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Sarah Wilson, in the Gershwin and in a delightful trio sonata by Vivaldi. Soprano Margaret Schindler will also fascinate with the intriguing songs of Aaron Copland based on the haunting poetry of Emily Dickinson.

ALPINE SYMPHON SYMPHONY AND SOPRANO EMMA MATTHEWS Three Australian Icons – One Very Special Performance Join Simone Young, the Australian Youth Orchestra and Emma Matthews in one stunning night of majestic music making. Simone Young returns to Australia to conduct Richard Strauss’ monumental Alpine Symphony. Witness a day on the mountain unfold – from a stunning sunrise to the spectacular summit – as the musicians of the Australian Youth Orchestra tackle the challenge of Strauss’ masterful tone poem. Rarely performed, and a major orchestral composition, it is one of the largest non-operatic works in terms of performing forces: the score calls for about 112 players in total. Soprano Emma Matthews, in possession of an ‘effortlessly dazzling coloratura’, brings sparkle and brilliance to three of Mozart’s most virtuosic concert arias.

Shore’s music expresses Peter Jackson’s film as an immense symphonic work – a uniquely developed vision drawn from centuries of stylistic tendencies. The music of The Lord of the Rings is counted among film music’s most complex and comprehensive works. This unique performance sets the score to the film, but allows the music to bear the narrative weight, creating a wholly new and dramatic live concert experience. ACO Beethoven 9 ODE TO JOY

The Australian Chamber Orchestra’s internationallyacclaimed Beethoven symphony series reaches its climax with Symphony No.9, Ode to Joy Joy, featuring Director and Lead Violin, Richard Tognetti, the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge and an exceptional line-up of soloists. Critics called the ACO’s recent Beethoven concert in London ‘the finest concert of the summer’ and spoke of ‘thrilling playing’, ‘vibrant drive’ and ‘total involvement’, concluding, ‘this compact chamber orchestra matches anything Europe can offer in energy, precision and interpretative rigour.’

Kawai Piano Series Timothy Young with Rudy Hawkes (dancer) Head of Piano Studies at the Australian National Academy of Music, Timothy Young is among Australia’s most prominent and versatile pianists. Kawai Piano Series Sydney International Piano Competition Winner’s Recital

Johannes Fritzsch and the QSO demonstrate the synergy they have created in their magisterial Bruckner cycle with the most awesome of all, the Eighth; a work conductors and orchestras don’t perform as much as construct out of hewn granite. Despite its dark, sinister beginning, it ends in a blaze of glorious optimism, as befitted the God-fearing Bruckner.

This recital showcases the brilliance and mastery of this year’s winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition fresh from success there in July. Befitting the occasion, the recital will be held in the Queensland Performing Arts Centre Concert Hall in reverse mode, which allows an intimate encounter with music-making at the highest level.

The intimacy and restrained passion of Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder capture the intensity of forbidden love, anticipating the atmosphere of his opera Tristan and Isolde and provide an opportunity for internationally acclaimed Australian soprano and Wagner specialist Lisa Gasteen to captivate Brisbane audiences with rapturous singing.

La Stupenda and friends When Joan Sutherland made her triumphant return to Australia in 1965, she sparked a renewed interest in opera. Brisbane already had a history of local opera performance, and Sutherland’s appearances at Her Majesty’s in October 1965 were a huge popular success. This exhibition features costumes from that iconic season, worn by Sutherland in the roles of Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor and the doomed courtesan Violetta in La Traviata.

La Stupenda and friends features costumes, original designs, photographs and memorabilia to celebrate this remarkable art form.
