welcome In October QPAC will present the exquisite Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. It will be the orchestra’s first visit to Queensland and only it’s second to Australia. Across two nights and under the baton of acclaimed pianist and conductor Christoph Eschenbach, the Vienna Philharmonic will perform two programs of masterworks featuring Schubert, Mahler and Beethoven (2 October) and Brahms, Mozart and Bruckner (3 October). These two nights in our Concert Hall will be extraordinary for many reasons. Not least because we are presenting a collection of some of the world’s most famous and revered musicians but also because for the first time, we will share a performance live with audiences around the state. On 3 October the Vienna Philharmonic performance will be simulcast live from QPAC to the screens of Cairns Civic Theatre, Gladstone Entertainment Centre, Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre, Mount Isa Civic Centre, Pilbeam Theatre Rockhampton and Townsville Civic Theatre. Music lovers in these six centres will for the first time be able experience a QPAC performance at the same time as audiences in Brisbane. This is a pilot project and one we are keen to continue and expand on into 2012. I thank all of our partner regional performing arts centres for their vision and enthusiasm for this project. Each centre is set to make this event uniquely their own. I look forward to welcoming everyone to QPAC this Spring – whether it’s through our doors, our website or satellite technology.

Cradle Songs

Fluff

RACHAEL BECK KATIE NOONAN

BY CHRISTINE JOHNSTON WITH LISA O’NEILL AND PETER NELSON

Escape into the restful realms of music and song with your beautiful bub. Cradle Songs is a series of concerts especially for babies under 18 months featuring leading musicians who perform a mix of soothing and playful tunes.

The return of a children’s favourite.

Acclaimed guitarist Karin Schaupp launched the series in August and is being followed in September by the muchloved music theatre performer, Rachael Beck. Queensland’s own songstress, Katie Noonan in November. Each artist will share their experience as a musician and parent. Inspired by research into early childhood development, Cradle Songs invites parents to interact with their baby, and the artist. Places strictly limited.

Fluff tells the story of the Gingham family who are very concerned for all the lost and discarded hand-made toys and travel the world to find them. They bring them to their colourful home of odd shaped boxes and welcome them to the family. Each toy is introduced one-by-one and after seeing a slide show of how they came to be lost, they are given a vocal sound, a movement, a piece of music, a night-light... and a nice comfy bed! Fluff is a simple, joyful and humorous tale for children told with a twist. It has been acclaimed for its originality, warmth, clever use of comedy and extraordinary combination of song, movement, sampling, projection and audience participation. COMMISSIONED BY QPAC’S OUT OF THE BOX 2002. SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN TEN YEARS AND UNDER.

Tosca BY GIACOMO PUCCINI

Spectacular in every respect, Puccini’s tempestuous tale of desire and betrayal makes a triumphant return to Queensland. Napoleon is poised for victory and in this climate of civil unrest and fear, the love of fiery singer Floria Tosca and painter-revolutionary Cavaradossi is tested by the lustful and corrupt chief of police, Scarpia. Confrontations abound as they engage in a fierce battle of wills and this powerful drama moves towards its inevitable but heart-rending tragedy. Australian soprano Cheryl Barker reprises the role for which she is renowned both here and overseas. Undoubtedly one of Puccini’s masterworks; the thrilling music is emotional and intensely dramatic, exploding with spectacular melodies and beautiful, impassioned arias.

Pygmalion BY GEORGE BERNARD SHAW

Is it possible to survive being dressed up and dragged into a tier of society that’s utterly unfamiliar? Eliza is about to find out. In George Bernard Shaw’s renowned play, uppity phonetics professor Henry Higgins plucks Eliza Doolittle off the streets in an effort to pass her off as a duchess. Can he transform a sow’s ear into a silk purse in just six months to win a bet with his chum Colonel Pickering?

And will the social experiment teach the aloof academic a few things in the process? Michael Gow’s Pygmalion is most definitely not My Fair Lady. While it boasts all the lavishness of a period piece, Lady it also captures the razor wit and sharp-edged banter of Shaw’s original text, highlighting the vital themes which remain every bit as relevant in society today.

Maria de Buenos Aires Cherie Boogaart, star of Maria de Buenos Aires has earned glowing reviews – not just because of her voice, beauty and fantastic legs, which are mentioned often, but for dancing a ‘mean tango’. James Morrison

Steampowered

Award-winning Australian jazz musician and international superstar James Morrison is bringing his big band to Brisbane.

Circus Oz has broken box offices at Edinburgh Festival, toured 26 countries on five continents and performed in a glass opera house in the middle of a Brazilian rainforest.

The 18 piece band features improvised solos by each member and the vocal talents of Emma Pask, who James describes as the greatest gift to Australian jazz vocals in the past decade.

With an art form that draws on the philosophy of new theatre, the practicalities of circus, the skill of Chinese acrobatic masters and the style of cabaret, Circus Oz has perfected its own particular pastiche.

Morrison’s band has toured throughout Australia and overseas, recorded three live albums, performed for HRH Queen Elizabeth II and many other heads of state – not to mention developed an earthy groove that is the reason this music is called ‘swing’.

The troupe offers knockabout physicality, daredevil behaviour, youthful grace and intimate spectacle, all set to live, loud, brash music.

Magnificat

Liam Viney & Anna Grinberg

A rare chance to hear three of the twentieth century’s most exciting works performed by the two-piano team, Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg. Together, the three works stand as monuments to past glory while viscerally evoking the modern world. Stravinsky’s Concerto for Two Pianos is one the greatest neo-classical works ever written, combining sheer beauty with Baroque and Jazz influences. Ligeti’s Three Pieces for Two Pianos are a stylistic pivot between the musical atmospheres that attracted Kubrick and the subsequent African and South American rhythmic world of his more recent music.

An exultant return for The University of Queensland School of Music. The combined forces of the UQ Symphony Orchestra, the UQ Chorale and the UQ Wind Symphony provide performances on a grand scale. Works include Brahms’ Tragic Overture, Sibelius’ Finlandia, Johan de Meijand’s Planet Earth and John Rutter’s glorious Magnificat cat. Under the masterful guidance of Warwick Potter, Graeme Morton and Patrick Pickett, this concert promises to be a truly majestic display of outstanding musicianship from The University of Queensland.

Finally, Ravel’s La Valse manages to evoke old-world opulence before ecstatically smashing it against the rocks of harsh post-World War I European reality.

The Composer is Dead Dead, written by the brilliant author Lemony Snicket with music by Nathaniel Stookey, is a great introduction to the instruments of the orchestra. The concert is presented as a classic ‘who dunit?’ tale. Our diligent detective will interrogate each section of the orchestra to uncover what they do, how they work and who killed the composers Beethoven, Bach and Mozart. Were they drowned out by the drums? Did the clarinets sneak up on them? Or did the trumpets blow them away? Tchaikovsky Symphony 4

Two of the brightest stars on the international circuit appear separately and combine their artistry. Cédric Tiberghien, whose playing regularly has audiences enraptured and critics diving for the thesaurus in search of new superlatives, performs one of Mozart’s only two piano concertos in a minor key, No. 20 in D minor, whose demonic and intense qualities transcend the traditional emotional boundaries of the 18th century. He then joins soprano Natalie Peluso in Mozart’s greatest concert aria, Ch’io mi scordi di te? Ms Peluso is then soloist in the sublime finale to Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, an ecstatic hymn to childhood innocence; a sun-lit world where shadows are banished.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor Maestro Eivind Aadland takes us on a visit to his homeland in Edvard Grieg’s charming concert overture In Autumn. Keyboard wizard John Fisher fearlessly walks on the dark side in Franz Liszt’s graphic Totentanz, Dance of Death, whose diabolical intensity comes from its variations on the Dies Irae theme in the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead. Few other composers could sublimate personal anguish, emotional turmoil and spiritual crisis into a work as compellingly dramatic yet beautiful as Peter Tchaikovsky did in his Fourth Symphony, one of the great emotional and inspiring musical journeys.

The G minor key signature of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, the central panel in his final symphonic trilogy, is often the hallmark of his most intense and dramatic works, in this case also one of his most sublime, where the Classical and the Romantic converge. Johannes Brahms was no musical radical but he broke new ground when he composed a Requiem based not on the traditional Roman Catholic liturgy for the dead but on Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible. Brahms’ Requiem is his most profound and overtly emotional composition, a work of melting radiance that fuses stoic resignation with a personal affirmation in God’s grace.

The orchestra is moving to a new home in South Bank in 2012, and in anticipation of this, the QSO and Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch perform Beethoven’s Consecration of the House Overture, written for a new Viennese theatre. Experience the magic spell woven by Li Chuanyun, whose playing the usually stern Fanfare magazine described as ‘overwhelming virtuosity coupled with heroic dash and élan’ in the gossamer textures of Mendelssohn’s beloved Violin Concerto. Only Richard Strauss’ creative alchemy could transform mundane domesticity into musical gold: a day in the life of the Strauss family demands one of the largest orchestras ever assembled. Never before has the QSO’s Maestro series ended with such raucous and enjoyable hijinks!

QI Live on Stage The world’s first LIVE interpretation of ABC’s smash hit television show QI comes to Australia. With the supremely interesting Stephen Fry and the inimitable Alan Davies. Host Stephen Fry and Alan Davies, joined by a line-up of celebrity panellists (to be announced prior to each show) present QI LIVE in Brisbane in a tour commencing in October this year. The buzzers, the theme tune and the QI set are all packed and on their way Down Under to take part in what we have come to know and love on television as QI, QI the world’s most impossible TV quiz! On the face of it QI is a TV comedy panel game show like any other; it has a chairman and four contestants who are asked questions and get points for their answers. But there

the resemblance ends. Points are awarded for the most interesting answers, regardless of whether they are correct or even relevant. Conversely, heavy penalties are dished out to guests who suggest the most obvious answers, which generally turn out to be wrong. Dylan Moran

Hale & Pace

yeah, yeah

We’ve saved the best ‘til last

Dylan Moran, star and creator of ABC TV’s Black Books is back in Australia with a brand new show, yeah, yeah.

After 30 years of making the world laugh, the most successful UK comedy duo since Morecambe and Wise has decided to say farewell. The iconic characters The Two Rons, Billie and Johnny, and Jed and Dave will put on their costumes and grace the Australian stage for one last time.

Moran’s legendary stand up rants have sold out across the world, cementing this unkempt wordsmith’s reputation as one of the foremost comics of his generation. Ageing, religion, kids and relationships intertwine with the general absurdities of life. Searing observations and sumptuous imagery, painted across a large fraying canvas with cruel, curmudgeonly ‘Moranesque’ brush strokes and all delivered with Dylan’s renowned, shambolic charm – it’s simply unmissable.

After a re-showing of their outrageous TV series last year on Foxtel’s Comedy Channel, Hale and Pace thought it would be great to say farewell in person and thank everyone for their loyalty over the many tours the pair has made to Australia. This year the boys will be supported by Australia’s best known Ventriloquist, Darren Carr. Don’t miss this final taste of Hale and Pace.

King Arthur and the Tales of Camelot One kingdom united. Three hearts torn apart. A valiant hero and leader of the Knights of the Round Table, King Arthur drew the sword Excalibur from a stone. He brought peace to a country in chaos, but even as fabled Camelot flourished, the seeds of destruction had been sown. When the bonds between the King, his Queen Guinevere and his trusted friend Lancelot disintegrate, so too does the fragile peace of the land.

Choreographer Franรงois Klaus has created a thrilling ballet that chronicles the life of this legendary King. From his early years under the protection of the mighty Merlin, to the cruel betrayal by those he loved best, and eventually, his final battle with the villainous Mordred, the story of the one true King of the Britons is brought vividly to life in bold and expressive dance.
