Welcome Hello. 2015 is QPAC’s 30th anniversary and we invite you to celebrate this milestone with us. There is much on offer across our stages and outdoor venues, special programs that are the result of a number of wonderful partnerships with artists and companies we enjoyed collaborating with across three decades. One of the most rewarding things about creating art in Queensland is the responsive audiences who are keen to try new things. It goes without saying that you, our audiences, are critical to our work. The conversation that takes place between artists and audiences, in that space between the stage and auditorium is what makes live performance magical. It’s also why it is constantly changing. Feeling the energy in a room shift and respond to what is being played live in front of you is something that you have to be there to share in…there really is no substitute. Over the course of 30 years QPAC has become part of the fabric of the city and a touchstone in the lives of many of you, who saw your first live performance here, graduated from university in the Concert Hall, or simply had an incredible night out here. I hope you feel QPAC belongs to your community and that you are able to join us in celebrating three decades of storytelling. Thank you.

Reflecting on the key milestones over the past 30 years at QPAC. On 20th April, QPAC celebrates its 30th anniversary. For the past three decades, QPAC has captivated audiences with an outstanding array of world-class performances. From the breathtaking beauty of the Paris Opera Ballet and exquisite tones of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, to blockbuster hits including The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, Les MisĂŠrables and Cats, QPAC has ensured Queensland has had access to an extraordinary selection of the best that the performing arts has had to offer.

Brisbane Baroque The phenomenally successful Hobart Baroque early music festival is heading north. Inaugurated in 2013, the festival gained near-instantaneous nationwide critical and public acclaim. In just two years, it garnered no fewer than five Helpmann Award® nominations and won last year’s award for the Best Individual Classical Performance. Brisbane Baroque will debut in April with all events exclusive to Brisbane at QPAC and in key venues across the city. In a major coup, the festival has secured an acclaimed production direct from Göttingen International Handel Festival in Germany of one of Handel’s rarest operas, Faramondo, never before seen in Australia. World-renowned countertenor Max Emanuel Cenčić will make his first and only Australian appearance with Camerata of St John’s and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra will join forces with Brisbane Baroque in Heavenly Handel which will feature sublime orchestral music, mighty choruses, and vocal fireworks. HARVEST RAIN
The Pirates of Penzance The pirates are back to celebrate QPAC’s 30th anniversary in 2015 as Harvest Rain presents an all new production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved classic, The Pirates of Penzance, with Simon Gallaher in the director’s chair. Australian television personality Andrew O’Keefe will take on the iconic role of the Pirate King, who will be joined by Gold Logie Award-winning actor John Wood as Major-General Stanley and musical theatre legend Nancye Hayes playing the role of Ruth. 30 years ago when The Pirates of Penzance opened at QPAC, the show starred a young Simon Gallaher as Frederic and a then unknown Marina Prior as Mabel – this time around Frederic will be played by Billy Bourchier and Mabel will be played by Georgina Hopson. This updated production of everyone’s favourite musical comedy is a hilarious night at the theatre you can’t afford to miss!

La traviata Love, passion, an overprotective father and a life cut short are the ingredients in La traviata, Verdi’s greatest romantic tragedy. Rising star Emma Pearson sings the role of Violetta, a coveted courtesan trapped in a life of pleasure for payment. When she unexpectedly falls in love with Alfredo (Aldo di Toro) their brief affair soars, only to be torn apart and ultimately end in Violetta’s death. A STORY OF LOST TOYS
FLUFF: A Story of Lost Toys is a simple, joyful and humorous tale told with a twist. It has been acclaimed for its originality, warmth, clever use of comedy and extraordinary combination of song, movement, sampling, projection and audience participation. The Gingham family is very concerned for all of the lost and discarded toys in the world. They travel all around to retrieve them and bring them to their colourful home of odd shaped boxes where they welcome them to the family. Magical, playful, and a little offbeat, FLUFF returns as part of QPAC’s 30th anniversary celebrations. First commissioned by QPAC for the Out of the Box festival for children in 2002, FLUFF has since delighted children and adults across the world, from Broadway in New York City to the International Arts Carnival in Hong Kong. La Sylphide Woken on his wedding morning by a beautiful, winged sylph, the Scotsman James is utterly bewitched. Elusive and playful, she professes her love for him. James’s obsessive pursuit of the otherworldly creature leads him to abandon his fiancee and follow the sylph into the dangerous realm of the forest sprites. Here, he realises that in reaching for unattainable love, he has lost everything.
La Sylphide was adapted by August Bournonville in 1836 from an earlier French ballet. It is a captivating work which remains one of the most loved romantic ballets to this day. This production from Danish choreographer Peter Schaufuss embraces the characteristic Bournonville style of graceful, seemingly effortless dance, performed with great dramatic impact.

Long-suffering second son Arthur, who has sacrificed so much to care for his mother Maggie, would just like a few weeks holiday with his new flame Anita. His philandering dentist brother Robert is no help, and manipulative Maggie is out to sabotage Arthur’s chances. Vague but vicious and more arsenic than old lace, Maggie would have Arthur tied to her apron strings for life, if she could just remember where she put the apron... Brisbane, 1942: a big country town jumping at shadows, never knowing if that buzz in the air is a cicada or a squadron of merciless Japanese Zeroes. World War II took the city’s innocence, and that of 14 year old Danny Fisher. Danny’s dashing pilot brother has been killed in the Bombing of Darwin. As Danny’s devastated family unravels, the teen finds a surrogate sibling in Andy, one of the Americans stationed in Brisbane. The American pilot takes Danny under his wing, and as the tension begins to rise between the Yank and Aussie servicemen, Danny hatches a reckless revenge plan against those who took his brother. Brisbane is a QTC world premiere drawing on true stories from the leafy streets of Brisbane in the middle of wartime featuring the talents of Dash Kruck, Conrad Coleby, Lucy Goleby, Hugh Parker, Daniel Murphy, Hayden Spencer, Matthew Backer and Melanie Zanetti. Matthew Ryan’s Brisbane is a life affirming coming-of-age tale, with moments of sublime comedy amid a heartfelt tale of a family fragmented by tragedy. Legends! Incomparable stars of screen and stage, Hayley Mills and Juliet Mills storm the stage in James Kirkwood’s hilarious and touching comedy, Legends! As the sun sets in Manhattan the claws come out as two famous but fading movie stars try to upstage one another. Leatrice Monsee (Hayley Mills) and Sylvia Glenn (Juliet Mills) are hustled by a theatre producer played by the versatile Maxwell Caulfield (Grease 2, Dynasty, The Colbys) to kick-start their onceluminous careers by starring in a Broadway–bound play. There’s just one problem: they loathe one another. The fast-paced play takes audiences on a joyous journey from the glamour of Hollywood to the excitement and promise of a new lease of life on Broadway.

With Honour We Serve – Our Tribute Patrick Pickett will bring 37 years of experience within the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to With Honour We Serve – Our Tribute that will commemorate 100 years of ADF service and celebrate the nation. We will take you from the Gallipoli landing to Armistice Day and the rekindled fear of the 1940s to the euphoric celebrations that followed. Music has stirred our hearts through the many conflicts around the world where Australians have taken part. Award winning Australian artist Darren Coggan, who boasts starring roles in Happy Days, Grease and Peace Train, will feature. His fourth album War Stories is a moving salute to the ANZACs, for which he was awarded his second Golden Guitar. One of Australia’s great storytellers, Neil Armfield, directs this heartfelt exploration of our ANZAC story through music, spoken text and visual imagery, where an Australian’s elegy for his friend brushes shoulders with the words of the father of modern Turkey. Set to music in a new work by Carl Vine featuring soprano Taryn Fiebig, the program also features English works that are evocative of the era, including Elgar’s Sospiri and Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, as well as the music of the Ottoman Empire and 20th century Turkey.
The Queensland Youth Symphony opens its 2015 season with internationally acclaimed soloists and an Australian Premiere. The concert begins with Leonard Bernstein’s dazzling overture to his musical Candide. Anticipating QYO’s 50th anniversary year in 2016, QYS performs Larry Sitsky’s apparitions, an Australian work commissioned in 1966 for the first ever QYO concert and dedicated to conductor John Curro AM MBE. The Australian premiere of German composer Heinz Störrle’s Concerto for Brass Quintet and Orchestra follows, showcasing Brisbane’s brilliant Best of Brass quintet before the final work, the mighty 20th century classic, Concerto for Orchestra by Lutoslawski.

A night of music so emotional it could make a stone weep. Mischa Maisky’s famously warm tone will capture the aching, yearning feeling for home in Dvořák’s Cello Concerto, written in New York as he sat on the docks watching the steamers heading back toward Europe. And then, prepare for inexhaustible melodies to tear at your heartstrings, brass fanfares to raise the roof, and some of music’s most riotous explosions of orchestral colour to pin you to the back of your seat in Yan Pascal Tortelier’s grand vision of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.4.
She auditioned for the New York Philharmonic at age eight, and the next day was playing live with them, without rehearsal. Sarah Chang still brings that immediacy to the stage, in Bruch’s showstopping Violin Concerto with its immortal finale. Shostakovich too flirts with danger in his Symphony No.5 about struggle for survival within oppression, with esteemed British conductor, Jessica Cottis, ensuring the slow movement brings radiance into darkness, and warmth into the bitter Soviet winter. This concert also features Chen Qigang’s Enchantements oubliés.

Vivaldi Unwired
A shared belief in the transformative power of music and a spirit of intrepid adventure led award-winning British composer Max Richter to take a baroque classic – Vivaldi’s Four Seasons – and reimagine it for orchestra and synthesiser, and for Paul Dyer AO to take up the challenge to present the recomposed piece with period instruments, and to take the reins of the synthesiser himself. The result is an audacious creation that takes the audience through the same landscape of spring, summer, autumn and winter but with a renewed sense of the genius of Vivaldi’s work. Staying faithful to the structure of the four concertos, Richter’s Recomposed Four Seasons is in turns beautiful, peaceful and serene, yet also wild, passionate and intensely emotional. Vivaldi Unwired includes Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, widely recognised as amongst the best baroque compositions written, C.P.E Bach’s Concerto for flute Wq 166 (arr. soprano saxophone) featuring Brandenburg favourite Christina Leonard, Vivaldi’s Concerto for two violins op.3 no. 8 RV 522 from L’estro armonico and finally discover Vivaldi, the indestructible baroque genius in a new light with Richter Recomposed – Vivaldi: The Four Seasons, beautifully led by Guest Concertmaster Brendan Joyce.

Don Juan In a world premiere, Lord Byron’s Don Juan theatrically compares the life of Lord Byron himself with the hero of his greatest literary creation, Don Juan. Performed by acclaimed actor/director Tama Matheson and internationally renowned guitarist Karin Schaupp, the show moves seamlessly between the steamy world of Don Juan and the scandalous life of Lord Byron (Matheson) himself. Matheson captivatingly marries Byron’s life with the poem, moving between the real world and the fictional world of Don Juan. The setting is brought to life by Schaupp through the evocative Spanish guitar music of Turina, Pujol and Tarrega and by stepping into the drama to become part of the play herself. As the show goes on, Byron and Juan become reflections of each other and it grows increasingly difficult to tell where fact ends and fiction begins until they are both tied together in a great, heart-wrenching conclusion. After all, as Byron himself famously put it, ‘truth is strange, stranger than fiction.’ Full of the wit, charm, elegance, adventure and horror of Byron’s great poem, but also the deep personal pathos of its great author, Don Juan will reveal a deep portrait of one of the greatest creative minds of the Romantic era, picked out in relief by his own creation. London Symphony The Queensland Youth Symphony presents a program of romantic masterpieces and a world premiere. The concert opens with the first ever performance of Concertato for Orchestra by Melbourne-based composer Allan Zavod who specialises in the classical-jazz fusion style. Four outstanding musicians from QYS then take centre stage as soloists in Schumann’s exuberant Konzertstück for four french horns and orchestra. The final work is the wonderfully evocative London Symphony by Vaughan Williams.

The south bank of the Brisbane River was a gathering place and a hub for entertainment long before the building of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. First as a meeting place for the local Indigenous population, then, after white settlement, as a port, a rail head, and the location for theatres, clubs and dance halls, this stretch of river bank already had a rich history before the ambitious Cultural Centre was planned. When QPAC officially opened on 20 April 1985, it became a vital part of this story. A place for people to gather and to explore the diversity of human experience: to laugh, to cry, to be challenged, to be entertained. Through costumes, artefacts, photographs and video, QPAC 30 surveys this diverse performing arts heritage. Drawing on the collection of the QPAC Museum, the exhibition honours what was happening before QPAC opened, celebrates the past 30 years of extraordinary activity, and the partners who helped make it a reality, and looks to plans for the future.

For the convenience of patrons who have difficulty walking, a specific set down area is open in the QPAC basement 60 minutes prior to performances in the Concert Hall and Lyric Theatre. Entry to the set down area is from the tunnel entrance at Grey Street. If you require assistance due to mobility, hearing or other access difficulties, please mention your requirements when booking, or by telephone on 136Â 246 before your visit.
Check your tickets
Unless otherwise advised, food and drink are not permitted in the theatres. Bottled water is permitted. At some performances trained Audio Describers provide a commentary with concise descriptions of actions, expressions and gestures to complement the theatre experience for patrons who are blind or have low vision. Patrons collect headsets at the Cloakroom of each theatre venue and need to be seated 15 minutes before the performance to receive program details together with descriptions of costumes and stage settings. Train to South Brisbane Station, opposite QPAC in Grey Street. CityCat to South Bank Ferry Stop in South Bank Parklands. Taxi to the taxi set-down and pick-up area on the Grey Street side of QPAC. Parking For guaranteed and convenient parking, pre-purchase your parking at the Performing Arts carpark with your tickets. Pre-paid parking must be purchased at least one week prior to your performance and presented on entry to the carpark.
Designated set-down zones for patrons are available at Grey Street (for Lyric Theatre and Concert Hall), and Russell Street (for Playhouse and Cremorne Theatre).
Finding your theatre There are four theatres and several levels within QPAC. Start your visit by checking your tickets for your theatre and door number. Lyric Theatre located on the Melbourne Street/ riverside corner of QPAC. Enter from the Melbourne Street entrance. Concert Hall located on the Melbourne Street/Grey Street corner of QPAC. Enter from the Melbourne Street entrance. Playhouse located at the South Bank Parklands end of QPAC. Entrances and lifts face the Parklands. Cremorne Theatre located on the river side of QPAC, with the entrance approximately half way along the building. Cloak rooms are available at all theatres for cloaking large items or umbrellas.
