SPRING 2014

SPECIAL EVENT

American Ballet Theatre

MUSICAL The Lion King

MUSIC QSO Journey through the Cosmos

Welcome Brisbane will be centre stage as our city nears the hosting of the G20 world leaders summit in November. Likewise this spring, QPAC will enter the spotlight welcoming world renowned artists, companies and events, including some debut performances, exclusives to Brisbane and Australian premieres. American Ballet Theatre (ABT) will be resident at QPAC in August and September as part of the 2014 QPAC International Series. On stage they perform the classic Swan Lake and Three Masterpieces, a work comprising three one-act ballets by three of the world’s leading choreographers. During the season, QPAC will become a hub of activity celebrating American dance culture with programs including dance films on the Melbourne Street Green, Conversations exploring ballet and the repertoire of ABT, a live simulcast of Swan Lake to venues in regional Queensland and free dance classes for everyone to experience the joy of dancing. This year ABT celebrates 75 years of performance and we are excited to welcome this company to Brisbane for the first time in their company history. The Brisbane Festival returns in September and QPAC’s post-performance music venue in the Cascade Court takes on an American flavour with the American Music Club. QPAC, Opera Queensland and Brisbane Festival present the Australian premiere of American composer Philip Glass’ opera The Perfect American in the Lyric Theatre. This production uses animated projections to tell the story of the final months of Walt Disney’s life and combines the talents of Queensland companies Opera Queensland, Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Expressions Dance Company, as well as Britain’s Improbable Theatre to present what many are calling a sensation. Brisbane is only the third city in the world to present The Perfect American following seasons in Madrid and London.

The Lion King arrives in Brisbane for the first time from September. The musical phenomenon seen by over 70 million people worldwide will literally re-shape the Lyric Theatre and enable the audience to be up close and personal to the production. When we launched The Lion King earlier this year, the response from the public was amazing. The Lion King will be the second longest running season that QPAC has hosted in our almost 30 year history and we are excited that Queenslanders are able to experience this musical phenomenon. In recent years, QPAC has hosted some of the world’s finest orchestras and this year QPAC will be the first stop for London Symphony Orchestra on their Australian tour. They will perform a program featuring iconic Russian composers Rachmaninov and Shostakovich led by renowned conductor Valery Gergiev, hailed as Russia’s greatest living conductor and featuring pianist Denis Matsuev who will perform Rachmaninov’s powerful and romantic Piano Concerto No.2. Brisbane is growing as a cultural destination and with this reputation comes our ability to attract these leading international companies and performers. QPAC and surrounds will come alive to welcome and celebrate these landmark events; we hope you take the opportunity to share in the experience.

AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE

Swan Lake

Of all the great classics performed by American Ballet Theatre today, Swan Lake remains the quintessential ballet, the one that defines the standards of the Company, tests its dancers and ennobles the spirit of the audience. This romantic fable of ill-fated passion, dreamlike transformation and ultimate forgiveness is set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious score. With breathtaking choreography and visually magnificent sets evoking a Renaissance court, the fabled lake of the swans rises into view, inspiring awe for generations to come. A regional simulcast of Swan Lake will be held on Friday 29 August – booking details available online.

SPECIAL EVENT

AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE

Three Masterpieces Demonstrating their incredible versatility and depth of talent, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) will perform a triple bill showcasing ballets by three of the world’s leading contemporary choreographers: •

Bach Partita Dynamic and complex choreography meets a virtuoso showpiece for solo violin in Twyla Tharp’s Bach Partita. Tharp has moved away from her modern dance idiom and used balletic vocabulary to showcase a large cast of dancers, including six principals. Inventive, intense, and beautifully structured, it is balletic fireworks from Tharp.

Seven Sonatas This ballet is filled with dancing surprises as three couples engage in a series of meetings and partings. It is an abstract work in the classical tradition, but has the feel of an intimate conversation. It is filled with emotion and drama and is one of the best from the choreographer-ofthe-moment, Alexei Ratmansky.

Fancy Free It’s a hot summer’s night in New York City. It’s the 1940s and three sailors are on shore leave. They meet three young women at a bar and the encounter is racy, cheeky and bursting with energy. Fancy Free is Jerome Robbins’ earliest ballet and is still one of his most engaging works.

This triple bill showcases ABT’s ability to bring an edgy and fresh approach to ballet, proof of their status as one of the world’s leading dance companies.

DESH

DESH is a full-length contemporary solo and the most personal work to date from celebrated choreographer and performer, Akram Khan. DESH, meaning ‘homeland’ in Bengali, draws multiple tales of land, nation, resistance and convergence into the body and voice of one man trying to find his balance in an unstable world. Moving between Britain and Bangladesh, Khan weaves threads of memory, experience and myth into a surreal world of surprising connection. At once intimate and epic, DESH explores fragility in the face of natural forces, and celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the rhythms of labour, in dream and story, and in transformation and survival. For this production, Khan teams up with Oscar winning visual artist Tim Yip (Production Designer for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Olivier Award winning composer Jocelyn Pook.

Gasp!

Imagine a world in which the air we breathe is just another commodity like food and fuel. Something that can be bought and sold according to market forces. This was the darkly comic premise on which Ben Elton based his first play, the hilarious and critically acclaimed satirical comedy Gasping. First performed in London in 1990, it has been revisited by Elton and reimagined for a new century and a new country. This major rewrite Gasp! relocates the story to an Australia grown giddy on the resources boom. Corporate powerhouse Lockheart Industries is already making a mint, but too much money is never enough. Their genius plan to privatise the air we breathe, with the ‘Suck and Blow’ filtering machine is an instant hit and sales soar. But it splits the planet into the haves and the have-nots – and if you can’t pay, you don’t breathe. Infused with the sarcastic, sharp wit that made Ben Elton a household name (The Young Ones, Blackadder), the play is a breathtaking, biting, brilliantly funny satire on the heartlessness of big business and the ruthlessness of the advertising industry. And it’s as relevant and hil‘air’ious as ever.

Freud’s Last Session centres on legendary psychoanalyst Dr Sigmund Freud, who invites a young, littleknown professor, C.S. Lewis, to his home in London. Lewis, expecting to be hauled over the carpet for satirising Freud in a recent book, soon realises Freud has a much more significant agenda. On the day England enters World War II, Freud and Lewis engage in a mesmerising duel that is both dramatic and surprisingly funny. God, love, sex and the meaning of life come in for torrid combat, only two weeks before Freud chooses to take his own life. Finale 2014

A spectacular highlight of the Brisbane concert calendar, the QYO Finale Concert is a “best of 2014” presentation by each orchestra and ensemble in Queensland’s world class youth orchestra organisation. 470 musicians aged nine to 25 perform in seven orchestras and ensembles: three symphony orchestras, two wind orchestras, a string orchestra and a big band. The program includes a variety of repertoire, representing the culmination of a year of rehearsals, sectional tutorials, music camps, tours and concerts.

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND

Requiem

The University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and The University of Queensland Chorale, perform Mozart’s final unfinished masterpiece, Requiem in D Minor. Also on the program is English composer George Butterworth’s tragically prescient A Shropshire Lad, and Elgar’s curious Enigma Variations. Under the direction of Warwick Potter and Graeme Morton AM, this is a chance to see a poignant performance from Queensland’s emerging talent.

The QYO Finale Concert is a great event for music lovers of all ages!

Marwood’s Serenade Acclaimed British violinist Anthony Marwood is loved by audiences, critics and players for his distinctive playing, golden sound and inspiring leadership. An excellent opening for this showcase of string orchestra repertoire, Stravinsky’s balletic tribute to Tchaikovsky was recently recorded by Marwood in a performance hailed as, ‘scintillating from start to finish’ (BBC Music Magazine). One of the ACO’s favourite string works, Dvořák’s uplifting Serenade fills the hall with pure, unadulterated joy. A natural extension of the Dvořák and Tchaikovsky Serenades, late-Romantic composer Enescu’s gutsy piece is, ‘a powerful work of genius…in concert, it would undoubtedly bring down the house’ (Edition Silvertrust).

London Symphony Orchestra The London Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of its Principal Conductor, maestro Valery Gergiev, commences its highly anticipated tour to Australia with a debut performance at QPAC. QPAC welcomes the LSO as part of its ongoing program of international orchestras, which gives Brisbane audiences the opportunity to experience the skill and artistry of the greatest ensembles live. With the LSO comes the exceptionally talented pianist Denis Matsuev playing music from the passionate cultural heart of Russia. The program is a roller-coaster ride through the emotions. First up, love, as piano powerhouse Matsuev performs Rachmaninov’s overwhelmingly romantic Piano Concerto No.2, most famous as the theme to the 1945 movie Brief Encounter. Then a maelstrom of emotions, from hate, fear and anger to sorrow and consolation, as Shostakovich paints a vicious and thrilling portrait of Joseph Stalin in his Tenth Symphony.
