WINTER 2014 JUNE JULY AUGUST

AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie

welcome

When QPAC was conceived over 30 years ago the intent was to create an organisation that contributed to the cultural, social and intellectual development of all Queenslanders. Numerous studies confirm what many who work and participate in the arts intrinsically know: that participating in the arts – be it as an artist, performer, or audience member – has a variety of benefits to individuals and society. At QPAC actively connect people, ideas and content with the aim of enhancing arts literacy to create a sense of connected communities that live, work and play alongside one another and are as appreciative of opera as they are of football. What you see on stage is the final result of many hours hard work and creative energy. The nature of the performing arts is such that the result is ephemeral…you have to be there to capture the experience. In many ways the performance is but one side of the story; I’d encourage you to dig deeper to use our resources to discover more about the performances you see, to feel connected with the artist on stage and the writer in the wings and to share your experience with those around you and in your community. 2014 is shaping up to be one of our biggest years on record. This is the first year our three signature works will occur in one calendar year: Clancestry, A Celebration of Country Country, Out of the Box Festival and the Australian debut of American Ballet Theatre as part of the QPAC International Series. These programs though diverse in content, are at the heart of what makes QPAC a space for people to experience the arts and create connections. As you’ll see in the pages of this publication, QPAC curates a program that touches the lives of many…we hope this includes you.

QUEENSLAND BALLET

Romeo & Juliet Shakespeare’s tragic tale of star-cross’d lovers is told through breathtaking, glorious dance in Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s iconic production of Romeo & Juliet. Queensland Ballet is honoured to be the first company in Australia to present this celebrated work of 20th century dance. With dazzling guest stars Tamara Rojo, Carlos Acosta and Steven McRae, also in the cast for selected performances are acclaimed Australian Ballet Principal Artist, Daniel Gaudiello, as Mercutio and former Principal, Steven Heathcote, as Lord Capulet.

MacMillan’s Romeo & Juliet is a magnificent and grand production, but the very human story at its heart is told with extraordinary intimacy. Whether in a lethal marketplace brawl or the blissful balcony pas de deux, the realistic and daring choreography resounds with raw emotional truth. Celebrating the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s play and the 50th anniversary of the creation of this ballet, Romeo & Juliet will be a superlative, not-to-be missed, event. THIS INITIATIVE IS SUPPORTED BY ARTS QUEENSLAND THROUGH THE SUPER STAR FUND, A QUEENSLAND GOVERNMENT PROGRAM THAT DELIVERS SUPER STAR PERFORMANCES EXCLUSIVE TO THE STATE.

Flourish These astounding and starkly beautiful dance works reveal the myriad expressive possibilities of dance.

Christe’s choreography is fast, sharp and perfectly matched to Philip Glass’s pulsing score.

Serenade, one of legendary choreographer George Balanchine’s earliest works, is a milestone in the history of dance. As fresh and illuminating now as when it was created in 1934, this iconic work re-shaped classical ballet into poetic geometry with a drifting, swirling ensemble, awash with beauty and bathed in light.

Another work of recent times, Nicolo Fonte’s Bolero steadily builds to the famous rhythm of Ravel’s rising orchestral music. Fonte’s precise, athletic choreography captures the escalating intensity of the music, culminating in an exuberant finale.

Short Dialogues brought people to their feet when it premièred in Queensland Ballet’s International Gala 2011. A provoking glimpse into three couples’ relationships, Nils

In contrast, the grand pas de deux from La Esmeralda is a gem from the classical era. Adapting Marius Petipa’s revival of the original work by Jules Perrot, Ben Stevenson has created a thrilling showpiece of bravura technique.

BANGARRA DANCE THEATRE

Patyegarang Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014, Bangarra – Australia’s multi award winning dance theatre company – commemorates the story of a young Eora woman, Patyegarang, who shared her culture and language with one of the first settlers in the place we now call Sydney. As the colonial fleet arrived on Eora country in the late 18th Century, Patyegarang befriended the colony’s timekeeper, Lieutenant William Dawes, gifting him her language in an extraordinary display of trust and friendship, which now inspires our imaginations about ‘first contact’. In Dawes’ notebooks, rediscovered in 1972, are transcripts of this remarkable cultural exchange. Patyegarang’s words are a window into a rich, complex and utterly different perspective on her world, its values and its sacred meanings.

Bangarra liberates Patyegarang from the library shelves, putting spirit into her heart, as a striking visionary and educator. This deeply moving production is told through the acclaimed creativity of Stephen Page’s choreography and David Page’s soundscape, in a powerful and meaningful dance theatre experience.

Take Me Home THE MUSIC & LIFE OF JOHN DENVER

Few records echo down through the years like The Beatles The White Album; produced during one of The Beatles’ most intense, fertile periods.

Take Me Home – The Music & Life of John Denver takes you on a musical journey of one of the world’s most captivating and celebrated men.

In 2009, four of our greatest rock’n’roll showmen – Chris Cheney of The Living End, Phil Jamieson of Grinspoon, Tim Rogers of You Am I and ARIA® award winner singer/songwriter Josh Pyke – left a trail of standing ovations and ecstatic reviews selling out 11 shows in five cities across Australia.

Through the exclusive film footage, John’s love for life and concerns for the environment are poignantly portrayed in this stage presentation. The motivation for many of his hit songs are explained, including visiting Jacques Cousteau on Calypso, which was the inspiration for his worldwide mega-hit Calypso. Singer Bevan Gardiner, accompanied by international musicians perform all the John Denver songs with such accuracy and feeling that if you close your eyes you will be effortlessly transported to the era of John Denver.

The White Album Concert returns in July 2014. The all-star line-up brings the classic album to life backed by a 17 piece rock orchestra and musically directed by Rex Goh. Hear the album’s 30 songs performed in track order from the populist stomp of Back in the USSR, the melodious sorrow of While My Guitar Gently Weeps to the hard rock prototype Helter Skelter. Kate Miller-Heidke

Rolling Thunder Vietnam SONGS THAT DEFINED A GENERATION

New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere-Jones described her songs as ‘a big clutch of Pantone swatches’. When people discuss Kate Miller-Heidke, the metaphors have to be big, in order to match a voice that is nothing short of monumental.

Rolling Thunder Vietnam is an inspiring concert drama – a ‘magic carpet ride’ like no other. The show draws together personal stories from the battlefront and the great classic songs of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Kate Miller-Heidke has the critics raving with her fourth solo record, O Vertigo!, an album that playfully redefines the boundaries of pop music, while pushing her voice into uncharted vocal terrain.

Featuring a new generation of young musical talent and some of Australia’s finest rock musicians, this dynamic concert takes audiences inside the combat, love letters, protests and homecoming of a generation on the brink of change.

After launching the album with a sold-out series of intimate acoustic shows around the country, Kate returns with a full band of some of the nation’s best musicians to bring O Vertigo! to life in all its glory.

Under the music direction of Chong Lim, audiences will hear such great songs as Fortunate Son, All Along the Watchtower, Killing Me Softly With His Song and People Get Ready. With amazing visuals and historic footage, Rolling Thunder Vietnam is powerful and stirring.

AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Mahler 4 & Sibelius 6 Richard Tognetti’s critically acclaimed and award-winning direction of ACO’s large-scale orchestral concerts are an annual highlight. Under his direction, ACO’s Beethoven 9 concerts won Limelight’s Best Orchestral Concert in 2012. For the next step in his symphony series, Tognetti tackles the biggest symphonic configuration in ACO history, featuring two ACO premieres penned by two of history’s greatest composers for the form. Tognetti explores how astounding and diverse the symphonic experience can be, pairing the shortest and sweetest of all Mahler’s symphonies, the radiant ‘Heavenly’ Symphony No.4, with Sibelius’ serenely beautiful Symphony No.6, which the composer said always reminded him, ‘of the scent of the first snow.’

KAWAI PIANO SERIES

Four Hands

Bernard Lanskey and Stephen Emmerson have been making music together for decades. Meeting as undergraduates at the University of Queensland, they both later studied in London with inspirational pianist Peter Wallfisch. Now based in Singapore where he is Director of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Bernard returns home to perform a stunning concert of duets with his friend and colleague, Stephen Emmerson.

The afternoon opens with Brahms’ deeply touching homage to Robert Schumann – a neglected masterpiece written in honour of his friend – and culminates in Schubert’s Fantasie, a work of heartrending beauty and drama and perhaps the greatest piano duet ever written. In between, Andrew Schultz’s variations, written specifically for the duo to complement this program, will be an imposing centrepiece with its distinct sense of yearning and broad expansive gestures.

Broadway Spectacular – West End to Broadway

Intimate Letters

In their 30th year, the Pops will take you to the place that their founder, the late Colin Harper MBE OAM, knew the Pops audience loved to go – West End and Broadway – the home to the great musicals.

In a dramatic collaboration with Bell Shakespeare, ACO perform Janá˘cek’s Intimate Letters and Smetana’s From My Life, sharing the stage with esteemed actors who give life to the stories which inspired the music. The theatrical staging of Janá˘cek’s first quartet, the Kreutzer Sonata, received glowing reviews and it is exciting to give his second quartet Intimate Letters the same treatment, performing an arrangement for string orchestra under the direction of London Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Gordan Nikolic.

Silvie Paladino’s international career has seen her on the great stages of the world and she has become the iconic soloist for the Melbourne Myer Music Bowl Carols by Candlelight. Her performance as Eponine in Les Misérables saw her nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the 1991 Victorian Green Room Awards. Silvie will be joined by Kane Alexander who made his debut in New York and acclaimed as ‘Best New Voice’. New albums and national tours have set Kane on a new journey in his professional career.

PRESENTED BY PATRICK PICKETT AND THE QUEENSLAND POPS ORCHESTRA

Inspired by more than 700 passionate letters written between Janá˘cek and his much younger, married muse, Intimate Letters explores their overwhelming and obsessive love. Smetana’s autobiographical From My Life soars with the joy and hope of childhood which gradually derails and ultimately descends into despair, as the composer faces the inescapable fate of impending deafness. Masterpiece Series 3: The Planets Queensland Youth Symphony (QYO) presents a program of cosmic proportions. The program begins with the world premiere of a work by QYO composer-in-residence Samuel Dickenson. Holst’s trademark work, The Planets, conjures vivid depictions of seven planets, such as Mars, the Bringer of War, and Mercury, the Winged Messenger. War In a rare appearance of the tuba as solo instrument, award-wining tubist Andreas Hofmeir takes the stage for Duda’s Tuba Concerto No. 1. Like many children, Henry loves books. But Henry doesn’t like to read books, he likes to eat them. Big books, picture books, reference books... if it has pages, Henry chews them up and swallows. And the more he eats, the smarter he gets. He’s on his way to being the smartest boy in the world, but one day he feels sick to his stomach. And the information is so jumbled up inside, he can’t digest it! Can Henry find a way to enjoy books without using his teeth? A cast of three performers use theatre, song and movement to bring Oliver Jeffers’ quirky, much loved story to life on stage. It’s good enough to eat! 25 June to 2 July Playhouse Age: 3 to 8 years

Carnival of the Animals Internationally acclaimed circus company, Circa, famed for their inventiveness, precision, and creativity, bring the joy of the animal kingdom to the Lyric Theatre stage in this physical theatre extravaganza. A blend of circus and multimedia, Carnival of the Animals is a magical reinvention of the classic music by French composer, Camille Saint-Saëns. Depicting creatures from land, sea and sky, Circa’s performers take children and their adults on a safari through the lives of the tortoise, the elephant, the kangaroo, the swan, the life aquatic and many other beasts. Featuring large digital animations, the stage is transformed into a series of wonderous animal habitats, while performers stun audiences with acrobatic feats and aerial skills. It’s an exuberant celebration of life on earth and the power of our bodies to express who we really are. 25 June to 2 July (excl 27 June) Lyric Theatre Age: 3 to 8 years
