AUTUMN 2012 MARCH APRIL MAY

welcome There are many highlights in QPAC’s diverse program over the next three months. Opera Australia makes its much awaited return to Brisbane with two exceptional productions that will hold appeal for opera lovers as well as those who are trying the form for the first time. Presented by Opera Australia, QPAC and Events Queensland, the season draws on the talent and imaginations of two of the world’s most lauded directors. Mozart’s fantasy The Magic Flute, is based on the New York Metropolitan Opera production and is directed by Julie Taymor, whose work crosses genres and styles and includes directing Disney’s stage triumph The Lion King. Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is directed by internationally acclaimed Australian director Baz Luhrmann and set in the lush surrounds of India. Bloodland is a Sydney Theatre Company production created by Stephen Page, Artistic Director of Bangarra Dance Theatre, in collaboration with writer, director and actor Wayne Blair and Bangarra artist-in-residence and cultural consultant, Kathy Balngayngu Marika. This landmark production is part of a three year commitment between QPAC and Queensland Theatre Company towards the development and presentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander work and a strategy to create new work for Australian and international audiences. The benefits to individuals and to societies of participation in the arts are well documented – increased literacy and numeracy skills; improved health and well being; high levels of volunteering and much more. Over the coming months, there are multiple opportunities for performers of varying ages and experience to take to the stage. Young performers are centre stage in Mary Poppins and Annie, Queensland Conservatorium students perform at Green Jam and with the Queensland Youth Orchestra, while more seasoned performers have the opportunity to shine in Senior Superstar auditions. Finally, I invite you to join us to celebrate all things Irish on St Patrick’s Day when we will present free family activities during the day, a celebration concert in the Concert Hall featuring Damien Leith and Irish music until late in the Cascade Court. As the final events in the week long Brisbane Irish Festival, it is sure to be a day full of fun, food and Irish entertainment.

Macbeth in Concert This is the classic tale of Macbeth, the story of a Scottish nobleman whose gallant code of honour is soon awash in the spilt blood of his friends and family. Treachery and deceit descend like a dark fog upon a once self-sacrificing man, whose corrupt fate drives him, his love and his nation into violence and disaster. Our much-praised Opera Queensland Chorus will again join with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra to present this special concert production of Macbeth, where intensely evocative music creates potent imagery. Verdi’s thrilling choruses and powerful orchestration will be realised in this dramatic operatic rendition of the age-old Scottish tale.

‘Verdi’s admiration for Shakespeare led to such masterpieces as Othello and Falstaff Falstaff, and the earlier Macbeth, a powerfully dramatic opera that hews closely to the original’s story line.’ AMAZON.COM

Shakespeare’s horrific and erotic narrative of blind ambition in 11th century Scotland has captured the hearts and imaginations of audiences for centuries. Everyone from operatic master Verdi to hip hoppers like the Wu-Tang Clan has had their own take on Macbeth.

Romeo & Juliet

Celebrating 50 Years of The Australian Ballet

WITH QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

A masterpiece from first blush to final devastation Graeme Murphy is famous for bringing new life to classic ballets, and now he’s tackled the greatest love story ever told: Romeo & Juliet Juliet. Traversing time and place, Murphy’s ballet follows a couple who are willing to take a stand for their love. Young passion smoulders at its core, but Murphy also tackles the consequences of greed and war, and asks what happens to humanity when love dies. This grand story is also grandly designed, with costumes by Australian fashion luminary Akira Isogawa and some of The Australian Ballet’s most ambitious sets to date. The result is a masterpiece from first blush to final devastation.

Gold! Gold! Gold! When The Australian Ballet was formed in September 1962, who would have guessed they would have so many highlights to celebrate in their Golden Anniversary year? Join Colin Peasley and past members of the company as they reminisce about the many memorable moments, people, ballets and tours that are part of their wonderful history.

Don Quixote When do dreams become real? Choreographer François Klaus offers a different take on the legendary story by Cervantes in this inventive production. The ballet, Don Quixote, is being filmed, and the dancer performing the title role feels such an affinity with his character that he plunges himself into reading the original tale. In his dreams, he becomes the famous knight and is transported into the wonderful world of the Don’s illusions, where he performs chivalrous deeds, seeks glory in battle, and gives his heart to the beautiful Dulcinea. But the Don’s grand exploits are all in his head, and he is blissfully unaware of how much amusement this creates. Back on the film set, there is a sparkling performance of highlights from the traditional ballet. With stirring music and

spirited dance, this Don Quixote is a gentle reminder of the great power of imagination.

‘I wanted to capture the spirit of Cervantes while retaining the beauty of classical dance, and I also wanted to draw a parallel between Don Quixote’s folly and the dreams of an artist today’ FRANÇOIS KLAUS

QSO with Markus Schirmer Experience the exhilarating sound and visceral excitement of nine trumpets and the enlarged Queensland Symphony Orchestra brass section under Chief Conductor, Johannes Fritzsch. Sinfonietta showcases Janáˇcek’s striking originality and dramatically rough-hewn sonorities. Mozart’s later masterpieces demonstrate his genius in transcending the

emotional and stylistic boundaries of the eighteenth century. His Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor K.491, one of only two in this genre in a minor key, has demonic and intense qualities which make it a favourite of pianists such as Markus Schirmer. The Jupiter Symphony, Mozart’s glorious symphonic swan song, revels in its power while retaining his hallmark elegance and charm.

ACO – The Hilliard Ensemble

MV – Tafelmusik FEATURING MUSIC BY BACH, HANDEL, MONTEVERDI AND VIVALDI

The Hilliard Ensemble is famous for mesmerising performances and chart topping recordings of early and contemporary vocal music. In this concert, Gregorian chant and French medieval hymn hypnotically intertwine with Edwards’ orchestral setting of Veni Creator Spiritus (Come Holy Spirit). A cappella prayers from 15th century England and Arvo Pärt join Raskatov’s Russian Orthodox chant setting, written for The Hilliard Ensemble and string orchestra. This concert also celebrates the luscious ACO string sound with two opulent works, Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and Arensky’s Variations on a theme by Tchaikovsky Tchaikovsky.

If you’ve ever wondered what the universe sounds like, here is your chance. Canadian ensemble Tafelmusik will take you on an epic space odyssey, performing exquisite period music from memory before stunning images from the Hubble deep space telescope. Combining music, photography and storytelling, The Galileo Project brings to life the brilliant minds of the early astronomers and the music that inspired them, as a large scale, ever changing backdrop of stars and planets unfolds. Using the best of Bach, Handel, Monteverdi and Vivaldi, come and hear the tunes that were probably in Galileo’s head when he discovered the moons of Jupiter.

‘One of the finest vocal ensembles in the world.’

‘It’s breathtaking… The achievement here is enough to make the stars weep.’

QSO Plays Elgar

QSO with Sergio Tiempo

Like so many of Haydn’s named symphonies, no one quite knows how the Symphony No. 88 came to be nicknamed ‘The Letter V’. None of this matters when you hear the blend of wit, charm and inventiveness of this wonderful score. Elgar’s Enigma Variations, another quintessentially English masterpiece, immortalised his affectionate portraits of tweedy eccentrics but the noble strains of the Nimrod Variation are among the most moving and beloved English music ever composed. Marshall McGuire, an extraordinary harp player, plays Boieldieu’s Harp Concerto with a lyricism that will delight.

Venezuelan Martha Argerich protégé, Sergio Tiempo, made one of the most sensational debuts ever in his 2011 Brisbane concerts, hailed as much for the deep insights and emotional fervour he brings to virtuoso showpieces as for his electric virtuosity. In 2012, he returns in triumph to perform Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3, the paragon of arch romantic piano concertos. Mexican firebrand, Enrique Arturo Diemecke, leads the orchestra with panache in Debussy’s Nocturnes and La mer’s delightful melodies, confirming the theory that Debussy deserves more frequent performances.

QYO Don Juan

QSO Plays Beethoven

The 2012 Queensland Youth Symphony Concert Series begins with Richard Strauss’s masterpiece, Don Juan. A musical portrait of that great Spanish philanderer, it is one of Strauss’s most exciting creations.

Sergio Tiempo, a pianist one critic hailed as ‘irresistible’ in Chopin, performs his magnum opus, which, despite its larger scale remains unmistakably and triumphantly Chopinesque and a tribute to the unique emotions the composer poured into it, especially in the slow movement, which is really an exquisite nocturne. Beethoven’s ever fresh Pastoral Symphony shows how a genius like Beethoven could even improve on the perfection of nature in this favourite work. Conducted by Antura Enrique Diemeske.

QYS Principal Cellist Oliver Scott performs the inspiring Cello Concerto by French composer Saint-Saëns, prior to performances with QYS in Germany in July 2012. A highlight of the concert is the mighty 12th Symphony of Shostakovich, dark, powerful and full of drama.

QSO with Johannes Fritzsch

QSO Plays Tchaikovsky

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Cello, David Lale, and Principal Viola, Yoko Okayasu, shine respectively as the hero and his faithful servant, Sancho Panza, in Richard Strauss’ masterful tone poem, Don Quixote; the work which captures the spirit of Cervantes’ novel and portrays the poignant images of this sublime human tragic-comedy. Ernest Newman wrote ‘for wit, humour, pathos and humanity, there is nothing like it in all music.’ Before interval Principal Oboe of Amsterdam’s illustrious Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Alexei Ogrintchouk, brings a special lustre to Mozart’s sparkling Oboe Concerto and Beethoven, in his equally sparkling, witty and brief Eighth Symphony, proves that he was also the god of small things.

A program no romantic should miss! Shakespeare’s play takes almost three hours but in twenty minutes Tchaikovsky distilled the drama and emotion in his Romeo and Juliet: Fantasy Overture as no other composer ever could. Tchaikovsky’s Polish Symphony was named for the spectacular polonaise in the finale, but this five movement work is brimming with other wonderful melodies and great musical ideas from first note to last, everyone who hears it for the first time will want to hear it more often. Tatiana Polyanskaya spices this Russian spectacular with Arensky’s colourful Fantasia on Russian Themes (after Ivan Ryabinin)

QSO with Valery Polyansky

Elgar’s Cello Concerto

Only a Russian conductor like Valery Polyansky can invest Borodin’s music with the uniquely Slavic sense of yearning; nowhere is this more heartfelt than in his Second Symphony. Let Maestro Polyansky and the QSO envelop you in its gorgeously sinuous melodies. In total contrast, Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.1 is a walk on the wild side and reveals the composer at his most subversively and mischievously satirical. At the premiere of his Festival Overture, composed to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution, the audience was ordered to applaud. Modern audiences need no encouragement.

Experience the melancholy and nostalgia of Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor. Acclaimed UQ cellist Patrick Murphy performs alongside The University of Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Also featured is Brahms Symphony No. 2 and Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune. Under the baton of conductor Warwick Potter, this concert promises to offer intensely emotional music and expressive performances.

Exhibition: Mary & Me Mary Poppins and her creator P.L. Travers Few literary characters inhabit a life of their own the way Mary Poppins has. When the sometimes stern and often magical nanny first appeared in print in 1934, she already seemed oddly familiar. Queensland-born author P.L.
