AUTUMN 2013 MARCH APRIL MAY
welcome
This edition of @QPAC is bookended by two signature events – Clancestry in early March and the Bolshoi Ballet in late May. Clancestry is a celebration of Country and the arts and cultural practices of the world’s First Nation’s Peoples. This inaugural week-long series of events will focus on the practices of Australia’s First Nations – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Clancestry will present performances, free events and conversations with the aim of deepening relationships and understanding between all peoples. The Bolshoi Ballet is the second presentation in the QPAC International Series, a partnership with Events Queensland. Housed in the magnificent Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Bolshoi Ballet is one of the grandest and most prestigious arts companies in the world. As with last year’s Hamburg Season, the Bolshoi Ballet will be an immersive experience for patrons with opportunities to participate and interact beyond the theatre. This month we also see the return of Green Jam to the Melbourne Street Green. Green Jam is a series of free Friday afternoon concerts performed by students from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Green Jam creates a relaxed atmosphere and the chance for patrons to arrive early and enjoy pre-performance entertainment or for some to take five on their way home from work. This program has been running for a number of years now and is gaining popularity with each season. Our main-stage musical in this period is the highly anticipated Legally Blonde: The Musical. Based on the movie of the same name, the Lyric Theatre will turn pink as Elle Woods takes to the stage. Last year we welcomed over one million visitors to QPAC and, with a busy schedule of performances and events around the Centre, we are on the way to achieving this again this year. QPAC is the state’s largest performing arts centre and seeks to reach out to people through the arts by providing a wide range of arts experiences that encompass an equally wide ranging audience. Enjoy what we have to offer this autumn.

dirtsong by Black Arm Band Headlining Clancestry Clancestry, Black Arm Band perform their most recent production, dirtsong, bringing together many of Australia’s premier Aboriginal musicians with trusted musical mavericks from Melbourne and New York City’s vibrant jazz scenes. Featuring Archie Roach, Lou Bennett, Emma Donovan, Deline Briscoe, Djolpa Mackenzie and William Barton, with guests Jimmy Barnes, Paul Dempsey (Something for Kate), Nat Pa’ap’aa (Blue King Brown) and Shane Howard (Goanna), dirtsong is inspired by the words of Miles Franklin award-winning author Alexis Wright and is performed in 11 different traditional Aboriginal languages. The concert is a musical ‘conversation’ between the collaborating artists reflecting on country, conjuring it not only as a sense of geographical place, but of memories, obligations, nature, encounters and community.

End of the Rainbow
It’s Christmas 1968 and Judy Garland is not in Kansas any more. The former child star is shacked up in London’s Ritz Hotel with fiance number five, Mickey Deans, and her loyal friend and pianist, Anthony. A whirlwind success in her youth, the years have been unkind. As her finances crumble, her celebrity continues to fade and the press savagely turn on her, Garland is clutching at the straw she thinks will save her career: a five-week run of cabaret shows at the Talk of the Town nightclub. Peter Quilter’s poignant End of the Rainbow paints a warts-and-all picture of the beloved but tortured musical icon, her strained relationships with men, her struggle to stay in the spotlight – and the pill habit that would claim her life. After a show-stopping turn in Bombshells last year, Christen O’Leary returns to fill Judy’s ruby slippers and explore the destructive dark side of worldwide fame. This extraordinary theatre production is thrilling, hilarious, moving and tragic and features a live 6 piece band and includes 12 of Garland’s most memorable songs – The Man That Got Away Away, Come Rain or Come Shine, The Trolley Song and of course, Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

Red BY JOHN LOGAN
Colin Friels breathes life into tortured artist Mark Rothko as he broods and seethes in his Bowery studio, literally painting himself into a corner, in Red.
with stunning intensity in Red Red, along with the relationship between master and protégé, art and commerce, artist and audience.
In the 1950s, Rothko was showered with money from Manhattan’s elite, and took a commission from the swanky Four Seasons Restaurant that would set him up for life. He was determined to forge his art into a weapon against the richest in New York, but then in 1959, out of the blue, he stormily reclaimed the paintings and gave back the money.
From the pen of John Logan – acclaimed screenwriter of Skyfall Gladiator, Skyfall, Gladiator The Aviator and Hugo – multi award winner is a true masterpiece. Winner of six Tony Awards®, including Best Play (2010). Winner of Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play (2010).

Animal Farm, one of the most controversial and studied political commentaries returns, to Brisbane in a multi-award winning, physical theatre production. Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and under the principles of Animalism a better life free from human service is promised to all. Guided by a simple set of rules and an unrelenting respect for authority, it is not long until the rules that promised freedom become the chains that bind the animals once again. Anthony Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange To mark the 50th anniversary of Anthony Burgess’ literary cult masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange will tour Australia in a high octane, muscular and arresting production. This critically acclaimed all-male cast, led by actor Martin McCreadie as Alex, is breathtaking in its treatment of the ultraviolent and highly sexual text and makes for testosterone-filled, electrifying and astonishing theatre. A Clockwork Orange lures its audience into the glorious glass-edged nastiness of Manchester’s underworld. An unapologetic celebration of the human condition, this is the story of little Alex and his Droogs in their battle against the tedium of adolescence. Suppressed violence and sexual
desire mix in a dangerous and damaging cocktail as the young men battle through the difficulties of youth. A deeply hedonist piece, A Clockwork Orange explores sexuality, masculinity and aggression through contemporary music, exquisitely executed movement and the notoriety of Burgess’ text. It features a soundtrack of Gossip, David Bowie, Scissor Sisters, Placebo, Eurythmics, Duran Duran and Queen counterpointed with Alex’s beloved Beethoven. Opera Queensland: St Matthew Passion
The Passion, re-telling of the suffering of Christ, has had monumental human implications throughout modern history. Christians and non-Christians alike consider JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion the greatest work of its kind ever written, attaining truly sublime musical expressiveness. A moving combination of joy and grief, this powerful music drama shifts between chronicle and contemporary commentary, guided by the evangelist St Matthew. Opera Queensland and Camerata of St John’s, led by Brendan Joyce, will join forces under the musical leadership of renowned conductor Graham Abbott. In a staging first created by Artistic Director Lindy Hume for Perth International Arts Festival, international and Australian soloists, chorus and musicians form an onstage community to play out scenes from this heartbreaking story of betrayal and forbearance.

Dame Kiri’s appearance will be a memorable opportunity to hear why she is regarded as one of the world’s outstanding operatic singers applauded by all. Accompanied by her pianist Terrence Dennis, Dame Kiri will perform a rich program of classic and contemporary highlights from her famed repertoire. Created a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1982, Dame Kiri’s career spans 40 years in the major operatic
houses and concert halls in the United Kingdom, North America and Europe and, according to a recent review, ‘her voice is as remarkable as ever’. This intimate evening with a singer of historic status, yet one who hasn’t lost her renowned close rapport with her dedicated international audiences, will enchant not only those familiar with her music but anyone moved by song.

QSO Symphonic Revolutionaries
QSO with Lane and Fritzsch
Music is considered to be a universal language. It describes emotions of hope, love, sorrow, loss, war and peace. The wonder of music shares the unspeakable, and those feelings for which we cannot find words. The power of music in a live concert hall speaks to people in ways words cannot. QSO presents Symphonic Revolutionaries, a program stamped with the spirit of rebellion featuring music that will tell stories of hurt, passion, power, destruction and mourning. Each work expresses a significant uprising or a revolutionary hero including Beethoven’s military tribute to the Duke of Wellington with its snatches of Rule Brittania and Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony’s sinister second movement which is a portrait of the cruel Russian dictator Joseph Stalin. An educational program for Secondary Students designed to stir emotions and provoke deep thought.
Piers Lane, well known for his lyricism, melting tone and intelligent pianism, is the soloist for Mozart’s eloquent Piano Concerto No.21. This spirited, elegant work is often referred to as Elvira Madigan because the second movement was immortalised in a 1967 Swedish film of the same name. Contrasting starkly with Mozart’s heartfelt yet well mannered music is Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony with its stirring, brooding narrative. In this orchestral masterpiece Shostakovich charts the bleak struggle to survive in Leningrad during the German siege in the Second World War.

QSO Music of the British Isles
QYS Mahler 5
Acclaimed conductor Nicholas Braithwaite leads the QSO in this celebration of nostalgic treasures from the British Isles. QSO’s Warwick Adeney is violin soloist in Harrison’s On Bredon Hill and Guy Noble our witty compere. The British conductor Sir Thomas Beecham regarded Delius as the ‘last great apostle of romance, emotion, and beauty in music’ and Summer Evening, the first of three evocative tone poems, fulfills Beecham’s accolade. Arnold’s Beckus the Dandipratt Dandipratt, a buoyant overture with a plethora of memorable tunes and sparkling surprises from sudden key changes to colourful instrumental effects, ensures rewarding listening. An exploration of British classics is never complete without Holst and Elgar, in this instance, Venus from The Planets and Elgar’s Prelude from The Kingdom.
The Queensland Youth Symphony QYS opens its 2013 concert series with the passion and drama of Gustav Mahler’s mighty 5th Symphony, featuring the famous solo trumpet opening and the beautiful Adagietto slow movement.

QSO Something Old, Something New...
Barry Humphries with the ACO and Meow Meow
Full of contrasts, the old and the new, the serious and funny, frenetic and calm this program puts the spotlight on opposites, the melodic in Faure’s haunting Pavane, Satie’s enigmatic and transparently beautiful Gymnopedie No.1 and Wolf-Ferrari’s sumptuous Il segreto di Susanna Overture. The crisp rhythmically charged music of Schubert’s Marche Militaire and Beethoven’s Contredances is offset by Schickele’s whimsical humour in his irreverent spoof of Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man which becomes a Fanfare for the Common Cold. Vaughan Williams’ The Wasps begins with ‘buzzing’ and drifts into serenity. Gliere’s expressive Concerto for Horn introduces QSO’s Malcolm Stewart as soloist.
Barry Humphries selects, presents and performs music from the Weimar Republic, a time between the World Wars where German art and music leaked into the basements of an increasingly loose Berlin society. Transgressive cabaret sensation Meow Meow joins us for the racier numbers, including a duet with Humphries.

QSO with Wispelwey and Aadland
The Ten Tenors: Mum’s the Word!
Confessional, disciplined and wild, Shostakovich’s first Cello Concerto was written for his friend Mstislav Rostropovich. Pieter Wispelwey, the garlanded Dutch poet of the cello takes a fresh yet equally rewarding approach combining stunning lyricism with a crisp and spiky rhythmical attack. Music lovers wonder whether Shostakovich was a hero or a propaganda tool of Stalinist Russia. Richard Strauss side steps who is or may not be a hero by branding himself as one in the marvellous tone poem Ein Heldenleben. If Shostakovich’s language is beautifully lean, this imaginative, biographical spree leaves no instrument unturned in an adventurous exploration of the post-Wagnerian orchestra.
The Ten Tenors brand new show Mum’s The Word! has all of the most requested songs the boys have ever performed, as well as the most requested songs they haven’t! Audience favourites include Hallelujah, Close To You, Nessun Dorma, Ave Maria and modern mash-ups of Michael Jackson, Elton John, Queen and much more. Mum’s the Word! will see the Ten return with a new live band and a spectacular stage set.

Be swept away by a selection of classical pieces pressed into the service of the magnificent world of film. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor is forever associated with The Phantom of the Opera and Wagner’s dark and stirring Ride of the Valkyries is linked to Apocalypse Now. Paul Carasco’s performance of the romantic Warsaw Concerto famously chronicled in Dangerous Moonlight will be exhilarating and recalls another time, another era. Bernstein’s West Side Story is mostly remembered as a film. Johann Strauss Emperor Waltz is so suggestive of elegant ballrooms filled with swirling waltzing partners it triggers scenes of cinematic dancing in our minds without staring at a screen.

All Dressed Up COSTUMES FROM BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD When sound was added to film, it was possible to recreate the biggest musical hits for a wider audience. At first the movie musical fed eagerly on Broadway’s brightest talents. Stage-bound productions were recreated ever more lavishly. Soon Hollywood began to develop its own style, adapting plays or books, or even starting with original ideas. But the biggest stage hits still became even bigger movie hits. In recent years the flow seems to have reversed, as Broadway explores the movie back catalogue for new ideas. PHOTOGRAPHER DAMIR YUSUPOV
The Bright Stream In 1935, Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century, wrote an original score for a ballet called The Bright Stream. Set on a farm it delighted audiences but did not find favour with the Soviet authorities, especially with Stalin who thought the subject of collective farming too serious for a light-hearted and joyful ballet. It was banned and not seen again until it was revived by the brilliant young choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, a former leading dancer and artistic director of the Bolshoi. An overnight smash hit in Moscow and subsequently in London, New York and other capitals to which it has toured, it’s a comedic rural romp that incorporates dazzling Cossack and other ethnic dances as well as a side-splitting cross-dressing spoof of classical ballet. The Bright Stream will charm, delight and surprise Australian ballet lovers and it too will be seen only in Brisbane. PERFORMED WITH THE QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA.

Le Corsaire Inspired by Lord Byron’s epic poem, The Corsair, which sold ten thousand copies on the first day of publication, this three-act ballet was first performed at the Bolshoi in 1856. It’s a swashbuckling, romantic tale of pirates, slaves and oriental intrigue and is typical of the exotic and ambitious ballets created during the Tsarist era. It is also one of the most spectacular (and expensive!) ever mounted by the Bolshoi and its many famous set pieces provide the perfect showcase for the company’s stars, the soloists and its magnificent corps de ballet. This extraordinary work, which the Bolshoi regards as one of the signature pieces of its exceptional repertoire, has never before been seen in Australia, another coup for Brisbane.
