The King and I The King and I returns to Australia with the first lady of Australian musical theatre, Lisa McCune and international opera sensation Teddy Tahu Rhodes as the King of Siam. Don’t miss this legendary production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I. A triple crown award winner: The Tony, the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle for Best Musical Revival, this dazzling show is a lavish and triumphant fresh new look at a time-honoured classic. Hailed as ‘the most ravishing show you may ever see on Broadway’ when it opened in 1996, this multi-award winning production of The King and I was created in Australia and conquered Broadway and London before touring the US and the UK. It is a story of love and joy, set to one of the most glorious, unforgettable scores ever written, including Shall We Dance, I Whistle A Happy Tune, Hello Young Lovers, Getting To Know You, I Have Dreamed and Something Wonderful. For decades, The King and I captivated millions with its delightful story of Anna Leonowens, brought to the court of Siam as tutor to the King’s children. This is a dazzling musical celebration, a sumptuous production with stunning scenery and magnificent costumes, definitely an event not to be missed.

The Mountaintop A rainy April night in Memphis, 1968 – and it will be Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s last night on Earth. Wearied by his years-long march at the head of the Civil Rights Movement, the preacher checks into room 306 at the modest Lorraine Motel. Before the sun sets again, he will be shot dead. King’s late-night room service coffee comes with more of a kick than he bargained for: Camae, a hotel maid on her first night on the job. Fascinated by this beautiful, brassy, blunt lady, King allows her to take him on a journey to confront his past before his date with destiny. But is this irreverent maid all she seems to be, or does she have a grander plan for the firebrand preacher?
Insightful and provocative, The Mountaintop is a lively, funny, moving and magical look back at the life of one of the most inspirational men in history. But far from putting him on a pedestal, it’s a warts-and-all portrait of a human being, culminating in a blistering recap of decades of civil rights history, and leading right up to the present day. Penned by brilliant young Memphis playwright Katori Hall, the play was a West End and Broadway sell-out. Making his Company debut, Pacharo Mzembe shines as Dr Martin Luther King Jr while vivacious actress, activist and hip-hop sensation Candy Bowers dazzles as Camae.

Manon
Don Quixote
An opulent tale of love vs money.
Don Quixote, a retired gentleman, travels the roads of Spain searching for glory and grand adventure. Accompanying him is a somewhat bewildered labourer named Sancho Panza. In return for Sancho’s assistance as squire, Don Quixote promises to make him the wealthy governor of an island. Don Quixote gives up food, shelter and comfort all in the name of a peasant woman Dulcinea del Toboso who he envisions as a princess.
Manon is a rare thing – at once a ravishing feast for the senses, and the utterly compelling story of a young girl who forsakes true love for wealth. A naive girl on her way to a convent, Manon dreams of the city. Des Grieux, a young student, is instantly smitten by her, and they run away together. But once in Paris, Manon quickly succumbs to the lure of luxury, and her course is set for both tragedy and redemption. Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s sweeping vision of decadent 18th century Paris, richly costumed and lusciously orchestrated, is brought to life by the breathtaking artistry of The Australian Ballet’s renowned company of dancers.
Don Quixote was first performed in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1869. Since then, it has been performed all over the world by Russian and international ballet companies. The Imperial Russian Ballet Company will bring this flamboyant and festive ballet to Australia and New Zealand in 2014.
Get ready to be seduced.

Coppélia WITH CAMERATA OF ST JOHN’S
A beautiful, life-like doll and two bickering young lovers create comic chaos in this captivating ballet. Jealous of her sweetheart Franz’s interest in Doctor Coppélius’s mysterious ‘daughter’, Swanilda sneaks into his house to confront her rival. But all is not as it seems – and when the doctor discovers Franz is another intruder, delightful mayhem follows.
Setting the much-loved story in the small South Australian town of Hahndorf in the late 19th century, choreographer Greg Horsman has created a touching and witty ballet, with endearing characters inspired by our own history. With its joyful dance and the charming music of Léo Delibes, Coppélia will enchant people of all ages.

OPERA QUEENSLAND
Rigoletto AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Sex. Power. Corruption. Who could have known that since the first performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto in 1851 that Italian politics would have changed so little? Director Lindy Hume’s brand new production of the hugely popular opera takes the classic tale to modern Italy where the all-powerful Duke of Mantua holds court surrounded by fawning politicians and party girls. Celebrating everything there is to love about Italian culture from high gloss palaces and fashion to the seedier underbelly, Rigoletto’s thrilling score features the well-known aria La donna è mobile amongst many others. Some of Australia’s finest singers, including Queensland’s own international tenor Rosario La Spina, will join the Opera Queensland Chorus and Queensland Symphony Orchestra conducted by their Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch. SUNG IN ITALIAN WITH PROJECTED ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS.

Welcome to Christopoulos and Gomyo who appear with the QSO for the first time.
Queensland Symphony Orchestra presents a program featuring Berlioz, Sibelius, Verdi, Walton and Gounod works and welcomes sopranos Amanda Windred and Tabatha McFadyen to the stage alongside baritone David Wakeham.

Shostakovich 10 Opening the concert is Australian composer Stefan Cassomenos’ adventurous work, the Double Violin Concerto for acoustic, semi-acoustic and electric violins, which will be performed by violin soloists Monica and Sarah Curro, with Cassomenos on piano. Soloists Monica Curro and Sarah Curro both currently perform as members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and have each performed extensively throughout Australia. Havergal Brian’s The Tinker’s Wedding Overture opens the second half with a rollicking, jovial demeanour, showcasing the talented QYS wind and brass sections. Dmitri Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony was premiered after the death of Stalin. The piece was Shostakovich’s first symphonic work written after his public condemnation in 1948 and is a depiction of life under the Stalin rule, full tragedy and despair, but ending in triumph. Haydn & Italian Cello One of the greatest cello pieces ever written, Haydn’s C Major Cello Concerto is a crowd favourite and the ideal showpiece for passionate Italian cellist Giovanni Sollima’s Australian debut with the ACO. Sollima is renowned for his invigorating performance style and it is exhilarating to experience him performing alongside Richard Tognetti. The ACO met Sollima in Tognetti’s musical laboratory in Festival Maribor, Slovenia, where a review of his performance read: ‘Sollima issued a challenge to all who think the cello is for the faint of heart ... this was music that lifted the cello into the realms of the musical gods.’ (MusicWeb MusicWeb International International)
QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MUSIC ON SUNDAYS
(Not) the Last Night of the Proms A fun, larrikin slant on the light hearted and traditional Proms farewell. Take some classics, add a scoop of nationalism and a few sea shanties, some glorious voices, buffoonery from host Guy Noble, the mischievous raconteur, stir the lot with rousing choruses whipped into the melee and there you have a tried and tested celebration, aka Last Night of the Proms. Featuring a steadfast program of Elgar, Rossini, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky and others, I wouldn’t miss this for quids!
An internationally recognised musician, Sollima has composed for diverse artists including legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma and 70s punk icon Patti Smith. In this concert you will hear Sollima’s Boccheri inspired L.B. Files flanked by an authentic Luigi Boccherini cello concerto. PRESENTED BY AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Timeline A kaleidoscopic surge through forty-two thousand years of music, Timeline traces the evolution of music, from the ancient Australian Aboriginal musical heritage of c.40,000 BC all the way up to the most recent Western music. Bringing together a cappella vocalists, special musical guests The Presets and engrossing visual effects, Richard Tognetti directs a fascinating voyage that passes through the sparingly austere music of the 14th century to the voluptuous outpourings of the late Renaissance, accelerating into the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods before exploding into our modern age.

Page to Stage: Costume design for performance Angel or devil, king or clown – what to wear? Not always an easy decision. How a performer looks should tell the audience something about their character and circumstances. They must complement the production style, while still looking like they are wearing clothes the character would select. The costume designer analyses the text or scenario and, in consultation with the director and set designer, an overall concept for the production is developed. Sketches are made of each of the characters and these sketches, often including details of accessories and fabric samples, become the blueprints for the costume makers. When the costumes are complete, with hair and makeup added, the final ‘look’ of the character emerges for both the performer and the audience. Page to Stage: Costume design for performance showcases designs and garments from the QPAC Museum collection. The exhibition features work from some of Brisbane’s leading costume designers, from a variety of productions including The Tragedy of Richard II, Popular Mechanicals, Cosi, Cosi The Soldier’s Tale, The Marriage of Figaro, and Bartholomew Fair Fair.
