SPRING 2013 SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER

welcome Welcome to the spring edition of @QPAC and another season of the best in performing arts from around the world. Each year QPAC presents and hosts over 1000 performances in our four main theatres and outdoor spaces and welcomes over one million people to the Centre. With world class performances from local and national companies and international exclusives including the world famous Bolshoi Ballet already in 2013, QPAC is known as an arts centre of excellence. This spring sees the beginning of a new program at QPAC called The Seed Project Project. The Seed Project is part of QPAC and the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University’s ongoing collaboration to showcase emerging and young performers. The Seed Project will provide a new platform for students in the Bachelor of Contemporary Music program to connect with audiences and perform their original works. These Friday afternoon concerts on the Melbourne Street Green will be a place to discover new sounds and bands. Free Friday entertainment continues in October when the popular Green Jam sessions returns to the Melbourne Street Green with jazz performed by students from the Conservatorium. The Brisbane Festival returns in September with a diverse range of performances. Highlights include Expressions Dance Company’s new work When Time Stops co-presented by QPAC, the world premiere of Debbie Allen’s Freeze Frame, and performing as part of the Festival line up for the first time the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts new production Spirit of the Lore. QPAC’s WunderBar returns as the place to be after performances providing an eclectic mix of free live music from national and international acts, including some secret shows with special Brisbane Festival guests. The QPAC Concert Hall is the home of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) who will be joined by Australian pianists Jayson Gillham and Tamara Anna Cislowska as part of their popular Morning Masterworks series of concerts; and international stars Javier Perianes and Lola Astanova as part of their Maestro Series. Musical theatre lovers also have much to look forward to with perennial favourite Grease and the new stage version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang playing in the Lyric Theatre. The Brisbane season of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will introduce this classic to a new audience. In November the internationally renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam (RCO) will play two concerts in Brisbane as part of their 125th Anniversary tour of Australia. Named by Gramophone as the best symphony orchestra in the world and under the leadership of the highly acclaimed Chief Conductor Mariss Jansons this is the RCO’s first tour to Australia. RCO continues the line up of recent presentations from some of the leading orchestras from around the world in recent years at QPAC including the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. I look forward to welcoming you to QPAC.

Spirit of the Lore Following on from 2012’s stand out production of Roger Bennet’s Up The Ladder Ladder, directed by Wesley Enoch and the sold out season of Jane Harrison’s Stolen in 2011 under the artistic direction of Leah Purcell, the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts (ACPA) returns with the powerful new production Spirit of the Lore to examine the universal themes of initiation, isolation, leadership and survival. In this dramatic world premiere production, Spirit of the Lore explores the importance of initiation within community, the ensuing responsibilities and the danger of youth left to their own devices without the guidance of elders.

Spirit of the Lore is a creative collaboration between the staff and students of ACPA and the inspired design of Jacqui Schofield, who has designed for theatre and film and is currently completing a Bachelor of Dramatic Art in Design at the The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). The creative powerhouse behind the smash hit, sell out productions Animal Farm and 1984, return in 2013 with a new Australian play. Directed by Michael Futcher and featuring a cast of some of Queensland’s finest actors, Tequila Mockingbird visits themes of racial prejudice, the perversion of justice and the consequences of alcohol abuse, all in a uniquely Australian context. After a woman is attacked in a remote Australian town, the racist underbelly rears its head as the community targets a young Indian doctor who has recently relocated to the area. Only one local man possesses the strength to uncover the truth and defend the accused in the ultimate fight for what’s right but first, he must take care of other matters, a little closer to home. Other Desert Cities Christmas in sun-drenched Palm Springs; a desert tomb, populated by shriveled mummies with tans. The Wyeth children are home for the holidays and conversation doesn’t flow easily; politics isn’t fit for table talk in a family as fractious as this. Neither is the war in the Middle East, nor the shadow of terrorism. But there’s one thing everyone wants to chime in on; troubled daughter Brooke has just finished her magnum opus, a tell-all memoir exposing a pivotal, tragic, ferociously guarded family secret. As a quiet Christmas dissolves into feuding, there’s more than one meltdown brewing in the searing desert heat.

Design for Living Gilda loves Otto, and it’s entirely mutual. But Gilda is fond of Leo as well. Leo adores Gilda – but Leo and Otto have a bit of history, too. So who will pair off, and who’ll be left out in the cold? Well, why should they have to? Anything goes, it seems, when you’re an artistic type slumming it in a garret in 1930s Paris. Noel Coward’s subtle comedy Design For Living was scandalously risqué when it was written, painting a vibrant picture of the machinations of a muddled ménage-à-trois.

Are this trio footloose bohemians, or despicable, amoral degenerates? Well their mutual friend, strait laced and stuffy art dealer Ernest, has a pretty strong opinion on what’s decent. What’s that all-too-common comment on relationships “It’s complicated?” This one just happens to be rather more complicated than most.

It’s about one moment... From award-winning Australian choreographer Natalie Weir (where where the heart is, R&J R&J) comes When Time Stops – an ethereal voyage of life-changing moments.

The moment a single decision hurtles you into unknown territory... The moment the water rises... The moment you choose to stay or go... The moment that stops time...

OTELLO AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE Johannes Fritzsch, Chief Conductor of Queensland Symphony Orchestra, makes his long-awaited Opera Queensland theatre debut in the Australian Premiere of a bold new interpretation of Otello, evoking the environment and psychological pressure of a contemporary war zone. Simon Phillips, Australia’s foremost director of Shakespeare, leads this special Verdi Bicentenary production – the powerful tale of a military hero undone by manipulation, betrayal and obsessive jealousy. From its first explosive moments, describing the terror of a storm at sea, to the three gentle kisses bestowed upon Desdemona’s cold lips by a dying Otello, Verdi’s magnificent score is one of the great pinnacles of the opera repertoire. Leading a superb cast are the exquisite Cheryl Barker as Desdemona, Douglas McNicol as the scheming Iago and celebrated American tenor Frank Porretta in the title role; while the Opera Queensland Chorus will revel in the grandeur and scale of the work’s monumental choruses.

OUR TURN!

TaikOz in Crimson Sky

Join us for the final year musical theatre students’ showcase!

Australia’s world-acclaimed taiko drumming ensemble TaikOz returns to Brisbane to present a stunning new work.

Through blood, sweat, tears and a considerable amount of laughter, this talented group of young performers have worked incredibly hard over the past three years to develop their skills as musical theatre performers. OUR TURN! showcases these students through a delicious taste of the world’s most entertaining and often moving repertoire in vignettes of song, dance and scene.

Based on a haiku by Japanese poet Miura Yuzuru Toward The Crimson Sky Sky, this new work has been written by Artistic Director Ian Cleworth, evoking the poem’s sensual, dramatic and often playful imagery of a cloud of dragonflies ascending into a deep red sky.

This is a wonderful opportunity to share in the enthusiasm and excitement that has surrounded the musical theatre program at the Queensland Conservatorium. Catch a glimpse of Australia’s next musical theatre stars!

The thunderous drumming of the taiko is interwoven with the hypnotic melodies of the shakuhachi and shinobue bamboo flutes, voice and a rare performance on the bass koto, a traditional Japanese 17 stringed plucked instrument to be played by special guest artist Satsuki Odamura.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Hear the unhearable, feel the unfeelable, touch the untouchable. Celebrating 125 years in 2013, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam makes its long awaited Australian debut in November. Conducted by one of the world’s most esteemed and respected musicians, Maestro Mariss Jansons, the RCO will perform two exceptional programs featuring great masterworks of the orchestral repertoire. Since its first concert in 1888, the Concertgebouw Orchestra has been special. Resident in the opulent Amsterdam Concertgebouw (Dutch for concert hall), the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra has cultivated a sound that combines velvety smoothness with the steely virtuosity of 120 of the world’s best musicians. The combination of individual brilliance harnessed to a collective ideal of excellence is what makes this orchestra extraordinary. It’s the mysterious electricity that passes between musicians and audience when 120 musicians are playing as one. QPAC invites you to experience what many believe is the greatest orchestra in the world in the acclaimed acoustic of the QPAC Concert Hall.

Richard Strauss dedicated Ein Heldenleben ((AA Hero’s Life Life)) to the Concergebouw Orchestra in 1898, composing it to showcase every virtuoso player of this remarkable ensemble. This is a sonic spectacular of heroic proportions. Only performing in the Sunday 24 November concert

QSO with Gillham & Aadland

QSO with Perianes & Aadland

A long awaited return to QSO for Gillham – Grieg’s most popular work and symphonic marvel.

Dancing marionettes, a rising star and panoramic vision.

Young Queenslander Jayson Gillham is making waves on the international music scene. After winning the UK’s Commonwealth Musician of the Year Gold Medal at the Royal Over-Seas League’s Annual Competition, he follows in the footsteps of piano giants Geoffrey Parsons, John Lill, Melvyn Tan and Piers Lane.

Spanish pianist Javier Perianes is a rising international star and adored in his homeland. Hear how his startling imagination and vibrant drive breathes life and passion into Brahms’ Piano Concerto No.1, a work of panoramic vision. Brahms composed the maestoso opening not long after his close friend Schumann’s suicide attempt while the second movement is a tribute to Clara Schumann.

As soloist for Grieg’s Piano Concerto of swirling dramatic pianism and the Norwegian composer’s most popular work, Gillham returns as a fully professional pianist with the QSO under the inspiring direction of Eivind Aadland. Mozart’s Symphony No.39 is considered to be an orchestral marvel of sublime beauty.

Diaghilev commissioned Petrushka as symphonic music for a ballet about three dancing marionettes. Stravinsky’s ravishing score in this milieu was considered to be a ground-breaking masterpiece.

Zuccarini and a golden era of sensational tunes.

Jazzy classics and Daphnis et Chloe.

Lola Astanova’s emotionally charged and theatrical style harks back to phenomenal nineteenth century recitalists like Franz Liszt and Clara Schumann. Yet, Astanova also exploits contemporary social media to engage new audiences in spellbinding accounts of Chopin, Schumann, Schubert and Brahms.

One of the surprises in this concert will be the performance of the second movement of Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto essayed by the youthful and startling talent of Glenn Christensen. Travel back in time to music’s golden era and the glorious, distinctive sound worlds of Thomas and Busoni.

ACO Brahms 4 & Steven Isserlis

CHORAL FANTASIA The extraordinary power of voice is presented by Queensland’s future choral stars in this concert featuring the UQ Choral, with the UQ Symphony Orchestra and the UQ Wind Ensemble.

The Fourth is Brahms’ final powerful symphonic statement. Here, Brahms takes flight, as he melds the soaring sounds of Romanticism to classical structure in a constantly evolving drama.

Experience Anton Bruckner’s reverential Mass No.2 in E minor, Elgar’s Cockaigne Overture, and Beethoven’s intriguing Choral Fantasy in an exceptional display of massed voice.

Brahms premiered the symphony with a small orchestra of forty-eight musicians, which he declined to augment. The Australian Chamber Orchestra follows his lead and performs with wind instruments from Brahms’ time.

Under the baton of conductor Warwick Potter and direction of choral conductor Graeme Morton AM, this is an opportunity to be inspired by our creative youth.

Steven Isserlis is one of the ACO’s favourite collaborators – the epitome of the intelligent and passionate cellist. There could be no better soloist for Dvoˇrák’s ardent and much-loved concerto.

QSO with Osborne & Fritzsch QSO performs a program of appealing variations, dazzling pianism and Beethoven’s irresistible symphony. Included is one of Britten’s most frequently performed pieces, Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, a beguiling exploration of all of the orchestra’s instruments through a set of variations on a catchy theme by Purcell. Also part of the program is Britten’s Piano Concerto No.1 which revels in the piano’s versatility – the colours,

percussive qualities and potential for dazzling passagework. Stylistically, its brooding, ironic character resonates with Britten’s opera Peter Grimes. Scottish pianist Steven Osborne’s insightful interpretation is said to be, ‘packed to the roof with fun, wit, fireworks and dazzling pianism.’ Beethoven has the final word with the composer’s intense and irresistible Fifth Symphony.

QSO Musical Zoo

QSO Last Night of the Proms

Prokofiev and Saint-Saëns, animal escapades and symphonic birds and beasties.

An orchestral party, a homecoming, British favourites and tongue-in-cheek fun.

Composers like conjuring birds and beasts in their music. Be amazed by the depictions of fish, wolves, bees and revealing spider suppers, aquariums and ballet dancing chicks in this light-hearted realm of animal inspired music.

Last Night of the Proms is based on the final concert of London’s BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. These days, the Prom concerts have become just as much a staple of Queensland tradition, but with a delightfully Aussie tonguein-cheek twist.

QSO’s Musical Zoo vividly captures birdcalls of the nightingale and cuckoo with Respighi’s The Birds, and musical gestures of the deep grumbling drone of a bear in Haydn’s Symphony No.2 The Bear Bear.

Light-hearted and fun, our persuasive, impassioned Italian Maestro Giovanni Reggioli leads the QSO and the Brisbane Chorale in a joyful celebration of Verdi and Wagner’s 200th anniversaries with the internationally renowned, Britishbased baritone David Wakeham returning home as soloist. Come dressed in red, white and blue and enjoy this flagwaving, musical fun.

Tools of the Trade Tools of the Trade explores the world of ballet costume from the many shapes and styles of the tutu to the indispensable pointe shoe. Featuring costumes from the QPAC Museum collection and on loan from Queensland Ballet and The Australian Ballet, Tools of the Trade will take you on an enchanting journey through the styles and traditions of ballet costumes. The origins of ballet began in the court spectacles of Italy and France during the Renaissance and Baroque. Here, the elaborate and fanciful versions of floor-length fashionable dresses worn by the female dancers may have looked spectacular, but restricted movement.

The rise of Romanticism in the 19th century was soon reflected in the ballerina’s costumes. Marie Taglioni’s costume for La Sylphide in 1832 combined a tight fitted bodice with a layered gauze skirt revealing stiffened pointe shoes. A new style was set. As dancers became more skilled, and the audience more attentive, the tutu developed its many different variations during the century, influencing the costume of today. Today’s ballerina wears many different costumes, but the tutu, in either the stiff short frill of net or the softer romantic style, has endured a lasting place in the ballet tradition.

In the late 18th century Marie Camargo shortened her skirt to reveal her ankles and feet. A scandal resulted and a revolution began. PRESENTED BY QPAC WHEN WHERE TICKETS
