summer 2012 to 2013 december january february

welcome

This edition of @QPAC marks the end of an extremely full and successful year for the Centre and the beginning of a busy summer. In curating our annual program, one of the things we strive for is diversity – a mix of art forms and artists that satisfies and stretches the desires of our audiences and that fulfils our ambitions as the state’s major performing arts centre. From time to time we welcome back a much loved musical but no production is welcomed year after year – except one. Since the very first year we opened, QPAC’s Spirit of Christmas concerts have brought together artists and audiences in a shared celebration of the season. I look forward to welcoming you to our 27th Christmas concert this December featuring guest artists, acclaimed musical theatre and television performers Alinta Chidzey and Simon Gleeson. In June we celebrated the two decades of another signature QPAC event – the Out of the Box Festival for Children. A particular favourite of our young audiences was the Dinosaur Petting Zoo and so T-Rex, Australovenator and friends are returning to the Melbourne Street Green to prompt screams of horror and delight from thousands more children in January. Inside the building, our theatres will be filled with magic and wonder. The Illusionists bring ancient magic to a new century, Queensland Ballet awakens a princess in The Sleeping Beauty and the Ballet Theatre of Queensland transports us to Neverland, the home of Peter Pan. Into the new year, every week holds something special. We welcome stage and screen icons Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones in the Australian premiere of Driving Miss Daisy. Opera Australia returns in the new year with South Pacific which opened to critical acclaim and sell out performances in Sydney. Join the festivity this summer at QPAC.

The Pitch & The China Incident Down-and-out film writer Walter Weinermann is psyching himself up for the biggest pitch meeting of his life. He has an epic idea, and a dream cast. The one thing he doesn’t have is a decent ending. After moving to Hollywood in the 1920s, screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz said to friends back in New York: “Millions are to be grabbed out here, and your only competition is idiots.” By the time the credits roll on Peter Houghton’s witty, manic, one-man show The Pitch, we’ll find out if Walter is destined to be a millionaire – or just an idiot.

Companion piece The China Incident is the story of one woman, a perfect storm of crises, and altogether too many phones. Bea Pontivec is a high-flying, highly-strung diplomatic consultant who’s quite literally well connected. She has hotlines to the White House, to the United Nations, to a bloodthirsty dictator. She’s a power-broker, a playmaker, a cast-iron negotiator, a control freak. But as this pin-sharp satire becomes ever more frenetic, and her personal and professional lives collide, Bea will learn the meaning of the term ‘communications breakdown’. Routinely met with standing ovations, the Ukes’ depraved musicology gives you one plucking thing after another. Modern exercise in minimal art? Or a rabble-rousing music hall/stadium rock experience? To celebrate John Curro’s 80th birthday, QYO is forming a 150-member Alumni Orchestra – including some of Australia’s finest professional musicians – to perform Richard Strauss’s magnificent Alpine Symphony.

QSO with Kuerti & Fritzsch Haunting beauty and realms of enchantment. Anton Kuerti mesmerizes audiences with his revelatory performances of the Emperor, Beethoven’s final and much loved concerto. Kuerti’s affinity with this work is especially revealed in the haunting beauty of the concerto’s Adagio movement. The latter was recently used to poignant effect in the film The King’s Speech.

In the first half of the concert, the current Queensland Youth Symphony Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with soloist Stephen Emmerson. Stephen, a member of the Queensland Youth Symphony from 1976 to 1980, performed widely as a pianist, in concerts and festivals around Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Pacific.

Bruckner was accused unfairly of trying to “out-Beethoven Beethoven” in his lifetime but it is certainly true he loved his music. Like his hero, Bruckner composed nine symphonies of which the Fourth, steeped so romantically in medieval pageantry and realms of enchantment, is the most popular.

ACO – The Reef

Southern Cross Soloists mandolin mastery

In May, when the surf is at its best, Richard Tognetti took a crew of surfers, musicians and film makers to Ningaloo Reef, where the desert meets the sea. They spent two unforgettable weeks surfing, making music and filming and the result is The Reef.

Deutsche Grammophon artist and Grammy nominated mandolin virtuoso, Avi Avital, joins the Southern Cross Soloists in their first concert of 2013 in a stunning program featuring Baroque masterworks and traditional folk songs.

Immerse yourself in Jon Frank’s images of the ocean, the world’s best fin-free surfers, the arid desert landscape and the starry sky, as an incredible array of music swirls around you. You’ll never forget it.

This Israeli mandolin master charms audiences with his striking musicianship, technical brilliance and flamboyant style. The concert will showcase his extraordinary talents as we circle the globe visiting countries including France, Italy and Hungary. all dressed up Costumes from Broadway to Hollywood When sound was added to film, it was possible to recreate the biggest musical hits for a wider audience. At first the movie musical fed eagerly on Broadway’s brightest talents. Stage-bound productions were recreated ever more lavishly. Soon Hollywood began to develop its own style, adapting plays or books, or even starting with original ideas. But the biggest stage hits still became even bigger movie hits. In recent years the flow seems to have reversed, as Broadway explores the movie back catalogue for new ideas. All Dressed Up: Costumes from Broadway to Hollywood showcases costumes from Brisbane-based collector

Nicholas Inglis. The installation explores the changing relationship between stage and screen. It includes costumes from films based on stage shows, such as the film version of Annie, costumes from original films that have been made into stage shows, such as Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and costumes created for the stage. Costumes worn by Judy Garland, Sammy Davis Jnr., Bette Midler, Julie Andrews, Ray Bolger, Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Carol Channing, Nathan Lane, Peter Allen, Eddie Murphy and others are featured in the exhibition.

ay Fun d i l o H S u mmer A little birdie told us there will be fun for the whole family across the Cultural Precinct these Summer holidays. We would even go as far to say that there is a little magic in the air, making the impossible, possible. Thought dinosaurs were extinct? Think again, as life sized, pre-historic creatures take over the Melbourne Street Green and thrill children young and old as part of Dinosaur Petting Zoo. If your family prefer pets that drool and cause a bit of mischief, then you should head over to the Cremorne Theatre for the delightful production Hairy Maclary and Friends – what tomfoolery will Hairy get into this time? Or do you prefer your thrills to come with the glitz and glamour of a Las Vegas style blockbuster? You’re in luck, as seven of the world’s greatest magicians present a stage spectacular that will have Mum gripping onto her seat and the kids cheering for more! They will be all tuckered out after the excitement of The Illusionists! And are you sick of Dad singing the wrong words to EVERY Christmas carol? The solution is to take him to Spirit of Christmas, the perfect celebration of the joyful season and a chance to sing along to his favourite carols. Our friends around the Cultural Precinct and South Bank also have a calendar full of family friendly and free activities on offer!

Don’t miss a moment of the fun or you’ll be tweeting mad! pictured on cover dinosaurs from dinosaur petting zoo™ an erth visual & physical inc. production images provided by erth
