WINTER 2015

MUSICAL Dirty Dancing FESTIVALS Queensland Music Festival Queensland Cabaret Festival

Enriching Queensland

through performing arts

Welcome

If music be the food of love, play on. So said Shakespeare in Twelfth Night. This winter QPAC is filled with music as we collaborate with Queensland Music Festival and Queensland Cabaret Festival to present new works alongside favourites by some of our great Australian musicians. Two musicals – Dirty Dancing and Anything Goes will take over the Lyric Theatre; and we want you to try something different with our new free public programs Front Yard Music and Lunchtime Live. This year is QPAC’s 30th anniversary. When curating our anniversary program we wanted to encourage as many people as possible to visit QPAC whether it is for the first time, or the 21st, to experience anew the sensation of live performance. Since the Centre opened we have welcomed more than 20 million visitors to more than 26,000 performances. In the last few years we have built our audience to more than one million people each year, and of those about a fifth come here to see a free concert or performance. QPAC belongs to Queensland and Queenslanders. Our vision is to create a world where the performing arts matter to everyone. Over time we’ve grown to be part of the fabric of this city. Looking ahead we want to cultivate the artistic literacy of Brisbane, helping cement the city’s reputation as an energetic, innovative and culturally exciting place to live.

I Musici

AN ITALIAN ODYSSEY

One of the most respected ensembles in existence today, I Musici is Italy’s oldest continuously active chamber group. At their first performance in Rome in 1952, I Musici broke all the rules, playing baroque concerti with a tight knit ensemble of just twelve players and no conductor. A year later, their historic first recording of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons introduced 18th century Italian music to the world. This recording went on to sell over 25 million copies, making The Four Seasons one of the most famous compositions in the entire musical repertoire. As part of the 2015 Queensland Music Festival, QPAC is delighted to welcome Italy’s legendary Baroque string ensemble in a Brisbane-exclusive performance of vibrant and virtuosic music-making. Paying homage to their heritage with masterworks by Italian composers, this unforgettable concert will culminate with their superlative interpretation of Vivaldi’s magnificent Four Seasons – unmatched for its vigour, dynamism, sensitivity and sheer muscular energy.

James Morrison

WITH SPECIAL GUESTS MEGAN WASHINGTON AND MARIAN PETRESCU

Trumpet maestro James Morrison joins forces with ARIA Award-winning indie-pop songstress, Megan Washington, and the fleet-fingered genius of jazz piano, Marian Petrescu, for one monumental performance.

QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

QSO, Morrison & Meyer

Nielsen’s colourful Maskarade Overture is followed by Max Savikangas’s concerto for virtuosic trumpeter James Morrison and legendary bassist Edgar Meyer, an artist with unparalleled technique and musicianship, co-commissioned with Queensland Music Festival and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra in Finland. This dream combination is set to create a thrilling world premiere. And then, four notes of music, Fate knocking at the door and a symphony that is the live classical music experience, Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, conducted by new-school Finnish sensation Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Morrison is, by anybody’s standard, a virtuoso in the true sense of the word – a multiinstrumentalist extraordinaire who has performed with every artist imaginable around the world. Matching him effortlessly with her unique, bold style, Washington makes a rare and stunning return to her jazz roots. The peerless Petrescu, with his dazzling technique and dynamic interpretation, is eclectic and adventurous, rounding out this trio to near perfection. Unrepresentative Swill SING, PRIME MINISTER

Powerful words and musical brilliance collide in the moments that have shaped our nation. In this brand new, distinctive work, Queensland’s own Topology and The Australian Voices bring provocative text and exceptional musicianship together to create a cultural narrative inspired by famous speeches delivered throughout Australian history. Composed by Topology’s masterminds Robert Davidson and John Babbage alongside musical powerhouse Gordon Hamilton, the performance traverses pivotal moments from our nation’s history. Unrepresentative Swill takes the words right out of our Prime Ministers’ mouths – from Menzies’ Declaration of War, to Whitlam’s Well May We Say; from Gillard’s Misogyny speech to Abbott’s A Stain on Our Souls – marrying them seamlessly to an overlay of stirring music and choral work. Narrated with witty personal and societal observations by author, comedian and TV personality Adam Spencer, this powerful, thought-provoking performance is not to be missed.

Dylan Moran OFF THE HOOK

Dylan Moran, star and creator of ABC TV’s Black Books is back in Australia with a brand new show, Off the Hook. Moran’s legendary stand up rants have sold out across the world, cementing this unkempt wordsmith’s reputation as one of the foremost comics of his generation. Ageing, religion, kids and relationships intertwine with the general absurdities of life. Searing observations and sumptuous imagery, painted across a large fraying canvas with cruel, curmudgeonly ‘Moranesque’ brush strokes and all delivered with Dylan’s renowned, shambolic charm...it’s simply unmissable. Labelled ‘The Oscar Wilde of comedy,’ Dylan is unpredictable, bizarre, elegiac, often cruel but above all painfully funny. Moran sees through the joys and disappointments of human existence with the sensibility and intense perception of a man teetering on the edge. He chews life up and coughs it out… His big screen appearances have included Run Fat Boy Run, Shaun Of The Dead and Calvary. For any lover of comedy, this is the must see show of 2015. The Mabo Oration 2015

THE MABO HIGH COURT JUDGMENT: WAS IT THE AGENT FOR CHANGE AND RECOGNITION?

Join speaker Dr Dawn Casey as she pays tribute to the work of Eddie Mabo and examines current issues facing Australia’s First Nations’ Peoples. Koiki (‘Eddie’) Mabo was a crusader for Indigenous land rights: fighting and winning a ten year legal battle with the Queensland Government in the High Court of Australia in 1992. As a result of this court ruling, the proposition known as Terra Nullius was struck down and Koiki became an icon in the struggle for recognition and land rights by the Indigenous peoples of Australia and the Torres Strait. He died shortly before the High Court brought down its verdict. A visionary in the preservation and promotion of Indigenous culture, Dr Dawn Casey has been recognised nationally and internationally for her work over the years in a number of roles to bring Indigenous culture and issues into the spotlight. During this dynamic two hour production, internationally renowned performer Scot Robin, who played the lead role in the smash hit musical Buddy (original cast), together with his Crickets will perform more than 30 Buddy Holly hits including That’ll Be The Day, Heartbeat, Think It Over, Peggy Sue, Raining In My Heart, Rave On, Maybe Baby, True Love Ways and of course, Oh Boy!

Jimmy Barnes’ 1993 acoustic album Flesh and Wood included duets with some legendary Australian and international artists and featured many of Jimmy’s and Cold Chisel’s hits as well as some well-known covers.

44

Jimmy and his nine piece band, augmented by a luscious string section, will perform hits and the Flesh and Wood album in its entirety, using only acoustic instruments.

CONCERT

AN EVENING WITH

Tommy Emmanuel Two-time Grammy® nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia’s most respected musicians with a professional career spanning five decades. Relentless touring has garnered Emmanuel hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. His unique style is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a band for melody, rhythm, bass and drum parts, Tommy plays all that – and more – on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire young Emmanuel to try this ‘fingerpicker’ style. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel’s biggest fans. Guitar players of all levels come to his shows to witness the magic hands of the ‘Guitar Wizard of Oz,’ but his appeal goes far beyond musicians. Tommy Emmanuel’s message is pure love for the guitar and the music and his delight in sharing it with the world, one audience at a time.

Movie Masterpieces It’s hard to imagine great movies without their equally great soundtracks—that monumental swell of Saharan grandeur in Lawrence of Arabia, the epic, evocative theme of Gone with the Wind, the ominous acceleration of rhythm as jaws emerge from the depths below. So expressive, so vital to the meaning of the movie, is it any wonder that concert composers have always been drawn to writing with stopwatch in hand and silent rushes on the screen before them? Net result? Melodies so sublime, and orchestral showpieces so exhilarating, that they define the music of our times. Join QSO and entertaining host Guy Noble for a morning of Movie Masterpieces.

MUSICA VIVA

I Fagiolini In its debut Australian national tour, I Faglioni is a characteristic mix of old and new, tossing early madrigals in with spectacular new works to create a delicious musical salad! The group is acclaimed for its fearless performances of music that demand the utmost from its singers. This is extreme a cappella that ranges from the hyper-real playfulness of Janequin’s sung description of a Renaissance hunting party, to the rich imagery of a Monteverdi madrigal. Director Robert Hollingworth leads the singers and audience effortlessly through countries and centuries, and pays tribute to his native Great Britain with Adrian Williams’ extraordinary Hymn to Awe and the exquisite sentiments of Inheritance. The concert also features a new piece by Australian composer Andrew Schultz, especially commissioned for I Fagiolini and Musica Viva by Geoff Stearn.

QSO & Pinchas Zukerman

ABC Classic FM’s annual Classic 100 survey is a phenomenon, with tens of thousands of Australian music-lovers voting for the music that they can’t live without. And the results always surprise, while still confirming that some works are simply timeless, all time classics that are handed down through the generations. Now, with the survey into its second decade, Conductor Laureate Johannes Fritzsch and QSO give you Maestro’s Choice, the best of the best music that means the most to them, and you.

‘Herein is enshrined the soul of…’ and then Elgar leaves off the dedication of his Violin Concerto, an achingly poignant love-poem to an unattainable woman. This rare opportunity for Brisbane to experience superstar violinist Pinchas Zukerman live is prefaced by Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony, conducted by young Briton Rory Macdonald who shot to prominence last year conducting acclaimed performances with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The performance on 15 August will also include Karelia Overture by Sibelius.

EXHIBITION

QPAC 30

CELEBRATING OUR ANNIVERSARY

The south bank of the Brisbane River was a gathering place and a hub for entertainment long before the building of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. First as a meeting place for the local Indigenous population, then, after white settlement, as a port, a rail head, and the location for theatres, clubs and dance halls, this stretch of river bank already had a rich history before the ambitious Cultural Centre was planned. When QPAC officially opened on 20 April 1985, it became a vital part of this story. A place for people to gather and to explore the diversity of human experience: to laugh, to cry, to be challenged, to be entertained. Through costumes, artefacts, photographs and video, QPAC 30 surveys this diverse performing arts heritage. Drawing on the collection of the QPAC Museum, the exhibition honours what was happening before QPAC opened, celebrates the past 30 years of extraordinary activity, and the partners who helped make it a reality, and looks to plans for the future.
