Bringing together a stellar creative team led by Zen Zen Zo Artistic Director Lynne Bradley, this production will be a no-holds barred portrayal of the politics and sexuality that characterised the subversive and decadent cabarets of the last days of the German Weimar Republic. Featuring award-winning Brisbane singer/songwriters Emma Dean as Sally Bowles, and Sandro Colarelli as the Emcee, the music will be played live by an outrageous Salon Orchestra – led by musical director extraordinaire, John Rodgers.

Drawing from Zen Zen Zo’s infamous dance-theatre style (which combines Butoh, Burlesque, Contemporary, Camp), the Cabaret chorus will be made up of Zen Zen Zo’s senior company members. From 1 July to 23 October 2011, Queensland’s major arts organisations at South Bank are joining forces to present The Torres Strait Islands: A Celebration, which will showcase the diversity and vibrancy of historical and contemporary arts and culture of Torres Strait Islander Australians. As part of The Torres Strait Islands: A Celebration QPAC will present Bangarra Dance Theatre’s Belong and The Mabo Oration 2011. Our partners across the Cultural Centre will present three outstanding exhibitions – Awakening: Stories from the Torres Strait at the Queensland Museum, Strait Home at the State Library of Queensland and Land, Sea

and Sky: Contemporary Art of the Torres Strait Islands at the Gallery of Modern Art. The opening weekend, Saturday 2 – Sunday 3 July, centres around a coming together of the community and the general public to enjoy performances, workshops, talks, food, culture and exhibitions highlighting the rich traditions and contemporary culture of the Torres Strait. Join speaker Terri Janke pay tribute to the work of Eddie Mabo and examine the cultural heritage and rights of Indigenous people in protecting their knowledge, arts and cultural heritage. Koiki (‘Eddie’) Mabo was a crusader for Indigenous land rights: fighting and winning a ten-year legal battle with the Queensland Government in the High Court of Australia in 1992. As a result of this court ruling, the proposition known as Terra Nullius was struck down and Koiki became an icon for the struggle for recognition and land rights by the Indigenous peoples of Australia and the Torres Strait. He died shortly before the High Court brought down its verdict.

Presentor Terri Janke has family connections to Cairns, the Torres Strait Islands (Meriam Mir) and Cape York Peninsula (Wuthathi). She has had extensive experience as a lawyer specialising in Indigenous intellectual property, cultural heritage, media and business law and has worked in both the community and commercial law sector. Featuring commentary by Bryan Keon-Cohen QC and performances by didgeridoo artist David Williams and award-winning duo, Busby Marou. The Last Emperor chronicles the incredible tale of China’s last emperor Pu Yi. Born behind the gates of the Forbidden City into the imperial dynasty, Pu Yi started his life with a royal upbringing. At the tender age of three he was bestowed Emperor of China. The Emperor was ousted during the tumultuous period of the early Chinese Republic which resulted in his exile and he was then returned to China as puppet emperor Manchukuo under the Japanese rule.

Eagerly anticipated each year, Queensland Ballet’s International Gala is always a showpiece of the best classical and contemporary dance. Enjoy virtuosic performances by international guest dancers from Europe, the UK and Asia who excel in works by choreographers from around the globe. American jazz trumpeter and singer Chet Baker was the epitome of cool in the 1950s jazz scene. He was famous for his extraordinary talent but infamous for his James Dean good looks, emotionally remote performances and well publicised drug habit.

An inspired, high energy, cabaret romp in which acclaimed Brisbane singer, actress and producer Carita Farrer’s most cherished character, The Drunken Diva, stumbles into life. A tribute show it ain’t but an irreverent look at the delightfully painful public demise of a performer.

With Baker’s destructive life story and boyishly honest music, actor/singer Tim Draxl and writer Bryce Hallett created Freeway Freeway, a musical play offering a glimpse inside the troubled soul behind the headlines.

Hail the King of Instruments!

Let the orchestra and Eivind Aadland transport you back, with a little help from Bach and Haydn, to the elegance of the eighteenth century aristocracy, when dukes and duchesses, counts and countesses danced minuets and gavottes at court balls amid gilded salons under chandeliers. Succumb to the greatest Broadway waltz from Rogers and Hammerstein’s Carousel and the rustic charm of Dvoˇrák’s Slavonic Dances. Shostakovich is not a composer normally associated with levity, but hear the result of a 1927 challenge for him to arrange a piece of music in 45 minutes: an arrangement of Tea for Two from Vincent Yeomans’ musical No, No, Nanette.

Homage to the king of instruments! Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony is the grandest of his compositions and like all his works, it is suave and full of elegant Gallic melodies but also justly famous for its earth-trembling finale with solo concert organ, two pianists and huge orchestra. Josef Spacek, hailed internationally for his charismatic playing, brings his own unique touch to Max Bruch’s other great work for violin and orchestra, the gloriously tuneful Scottish Fantasy Fantasy, which uses folk themes as raw material from which to develop brilliant and exciting writing for the violin alternating with passages of tender and sometimes passionate expression.

Maestro Series 6: Beethoven 7 Beethoven’s Apotheosis of the Dance

The QSO reaches fever pitch under the baton of Eivind Aadland, in Wagner’s exploration of the agony and ecstasy of extreme passion, from alpha to omega. Argentinian firebrand and Martha Argerich favourite, Sergio Tiempo, hailed as one of the most thought-provoking pianists of his generation, unleashes his stylish panache and bravura on Liszt’s revolutionary Piano Concerto No.1. Rarely has so much virtuosity been concentrated into one concerto. Finally, abandon yourself to Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony – dubbed by Wagner ‘the apotheosis of the dance’– whose intoxicating joy and energy, climaxing in the orgiastic final movement, never fail to inspire an equally frenzied and heartfelt ovation.

Australian Chamber Orchestra Baroque Virtuosi

Maestro Series 7: Beethoven and Bruckner

The Australian Chamber Orchestra, famously an ensemble of star musicians playing period instruments, performs a selection of dazzling Baroque concertos. Starting with Corelli’s sparring between groups of musicians, through Vivaldi’s showstopper for four violins, to the Devil’s Trill Trill, written note for note from a performance by Satan dreamt by Tartini, the Baroque concertos are combined with some of the best Australian music for string orchestra.

In one of the musical high points of 2011, Johannes Fritzsch confirms his credentials as a fine Brucknerian in the mighty Fifth Symphony. Bruckner was humble and deeply religious and his massive symphonies are inevitably compared to Gothic cathedrals. Like the faith of the people who constructed those cathedrals, Bruckner’s sonorities move heaven and earth, as well as audiences.

To open the concert, Duncan Gifford, hailed internationally as a major artist of his generation, makes a welcome return to Australia to conclude the QSO’s Beethoven piano concerto series with the Concerto No.2, a work of elegance, poise and refinement.

Australian Chamber Orchestra Schubert String Quintet Dramatic, vulnerable, consoling, inspiring, sublime: Schubert’s String Quintet is classical music at its most transcendent. Bach’s Musical Offering, an ingenious response to a musical challenge from Frederick the Great, is interwoven with Webern’s exquisite cello miniatures and Stravinsky’s extraordinary chamber music in this performance by the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Principal musicians.

Queensland Youth Symphony presents one of the greatest orchestral masterworks from the 20th century: Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Audiences are enthusiastic about its touching melodies and mesmerizing rhythms. Being one of the world’s leading youth orchestras, the intuitive and energetic musical expressions of QYS will add even more sparks to this great performance.

This riotous celebration of the best of British music includes music by Delius, Ireland, Arne, Wood, Zimmer, Parry, Grainger, Elgar, Arnold including favourites Jerusalem, Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Land of Hope and Glory Glory, Rule Britannia and Pirates of the Caribbean. Don your Union Jack waistcoats and bring some flags for what has now become an annual celebration which captures the unique spirit and ambience of London’s BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall and brings out the inner Brit in all of us. The sun will never set on the British Empire, nor will it ever set on these stirring, rollicking tunes, including all your old favourites guaranteed to bring a tear to the eye. Rule Britannia!

For two weeks in August, piano music-lovers will be treated to 20 of the finest young pianists from across Australia and New Zealand competing in front of an international jury, including Hiroko Nakamura (Japan) and Jan Jiracek von Arnim (Austria), for more than $50 000 in prizes. Join the thrill of the final spectacular evening as the four competition finalists each perform a full concerto with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, conducted by internationally renowned Maestro Edvard Tchivzhel. Come along and experience the exciting atmosphere of music making at its highest level and cast your vote for the People’s Choice Prize. The full two week festival also includes competition rounds, masterclasses and recitals given by prominent national and international jury members.

Turmoil and Passion Passion rules! When Hector Berlioz’s stormy love affair with Irish actress, Harriett Smithson, turned sour, the result was one broken French heart and the Symphonie Fantastique, the ultimate Gothic musical phantasmagoria, which has been keeping audiences on the edge of their seats for almost 200 years. Australian tenor, Steve Davislim, whose singing The Guardian hailed as ‘awesome’, joins podium dynamo Guillaume Tourniaire in Ernst Chausson’s exquisitely dreamy and deeply moving rumination on love and loss, Poème de l’amour et de la mer mer. César Franck’s tone poem depicts a man whose passion for hunting, even on the Sabbath, earned him eternal damnation.

Opening the concert will be Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, contrasting Stravinsky’s Rite with beautiful dances from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Schumann’s concerto is one of the great treasures of the cello repertoire and a flawless example of refined Romanticism. It will be performed by Daniel Curro, ex-principal cellist of QYS and well known for his historically informed approach to music of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Concert pianist Anna Goldsworthy’s deeply-felt memoir Piano Lessons comes to glorious musical life in this Queensland Music Festival world premiere.

Be part of the live audience as The Queensland Country Comfort Hour travels around the state. Don’t dare miss this hilarious, retro chic, heartwarming, live radio show.

Goldsworthy’s award-winning book, which recounts her musical awakening as a young girl, struck a deep chord with critics, readers and music lovers on its 2009 release.

Starring Brian Nankervis with James Black, Peter Luscombe and Mark Ferrie.

Goldsworthy herself stars in the stage adaptation, which, like the book, elegantly illustrates the intriguing relationship between the young pianist and her Russian teacher.
