welcome Within the other-worldly environment of a darkened theatre, removed from the day to day machinations of life ‘outside’, the performing arts can deliver a live experience that inspires, challenges and deeply moves our inner beings. Over the winter months ahead I invite you to discover the royal chronicles of imperial China, the war torn passions of the Russian revolution and the traditional heritage of Indigenous Australians. Dance, music, cabaret and drama will once again fill the four theatres of QPAC, providing you, your friends and family with unique moments of wonder, delight and pleasure. As Brisbane emerges better than ever after a devastating start to the year, I encourage you to come together, play together and even perform together at QPAC. The car parks are open, our stages are set and the staff are eager to welcome you back to our theatres, foyers and restaurants where you can experience the power of live performance and the stories of life told on stage through music and movement, comedy and drama.

Zen Zen Zo Physical Theatre in Cabaret

Dylan Moran – yeah yeah

BOOK BY JOE MASTEROFF, MUSIC BY JOHN KANDER, LYRICS BY FRED EBB

Bringing together a stellar creative team led by Zen Zen Zo Artistic Director Lynne Bradley, this production will be a no-holds barred portrayal of the politics and sexuality that characterised the subversive and decadent cabarets of the last days of the German Weimar Republic. Featuring award-winning Brisbane singer/songwriters Emma Dean as Sally Bowles, and Sandro Colarelli as the Emcee, the music will be played live by an outrageous Salon Orchestra – led by musical director extraordinaire, John Rodgers.

Drawing from Zen Zen Zo’s infamous dance-theatre style (which combines Butoh, Burlesque, Contemporary, Camp), the Cabaret chorus will be made up of Zen Zen Zo’s senior company members. Together they will bring to life the colourful cabaret world populated by artists, gypsies, queers, Jews – the marginalized ‘Others’ that found a home in 1930s Germany before Hitler came to power.

Dylan Moran, star and creator of ABC TV’s Black Books is back in Australia with a brand new show, yeah yeah. Moran’s legendary stand up rants have sold out across the world, cementing this unkempt wordsmith’s reputation as one of the foremost comics of his generation. Ageing, religion, kids, relationships intertwine with the general absurdities of life. Searing observations and sumptuous imagery, painted across a large fraying canvas with cruel, curmudgeonly ‘Moranesque’ brush strokes and all delivered with Dylan’s renowned, shambolic charm...It’s simply Unmissable. Likened to Dave Allen and labelled ‘The Oscar Wilde of comedy’ Dylan is unpredictable, bizarre, elegiac, often cruel

The Little Mermaid

The Last Emperor

International Gala 2011

Untamed and wildly seductive, Carmen is a fiery Spanish gypsy whose charms prove irresistible to the soldier Don José. But Carmen cherishes her freedom above all else, and her defiant spirit cannot be subdued by any man. There are no winners in her dangerous game of love.

The kind-hearted Little Mermaid rescues a Prince during a storm at sea and so begins a journey that takes her far from her home beneath the waves. Determined to pursue her love onto the shore, she makes a bargain with the Sea Witch – but it comes at a price.

Based on the original story by Prosper Mérimée, François Klaus’s dramatic ballet unfolds to the powerful music of Bizet, with evocative staging and dance that echoes with the stirring flamenco tradition. En garde! This sensational production of Carmen will draw you into the treacherous world of a woman who lived and died by her own rules.

This much-loved story from Hans Christian Andersen is more than a simple fairy tale. François Klaus’s charming and poignant ballet explores the nature of longing, how making choices may have lasting consequences and how goodness can be rewarded in unexpected ways.

The Last Emperor chronicles the incredible tale of China’s last emperor Pu Yi. Born behind the gates of the Forbidden City into the imperial dynasty, Pu Yi started his life with a royal upbringing. At the tender age of three he was bestowed Emperor of China. The Emperor was ousted during the tumultuous period of the early Chinese Republic which resulted in his exile and he was then returned to China as puppet emperor Manchukuo under the Japanese rule.

Eagerly anticipated each year, Queensland Ballet’s International Gala is always a showpiece of the best classical and contemporary dance. Enjoy virtuosic performances by international guest dancers from Europe, the UK and Asia who excel in works by choreographers from around the globe. Following the tradition of more than a decade, the satisfying and varied program includes a stunning Overture and Finale by François Klaus for the entire Queensland Ballet ensemble.

Carmen CHOREOGRAPHED BY FRANÇOIS KLAUS

Choreographed by Ivan Cavallari, The Last Emperor is a European-orientated modern ballet performed by China’s leading ballet company, the Liaoning Ballet. The Last Emperor is an exquisite display of an incredible tale based on the true story of China’s Last Emperor.

This season of Carmen replaces the February/March season that was rescheduled as a result of the flood in January.

R&J Natalie Weir’s R&J, inspired by the classic story of Romeo and Juliet, presents three poignant love stories. One story, set in modern day Brisbane, is brutal and contemporary; another story, set in domestic bliss in suburbia in the 50s, is touching in its realism; the third story, set in more ancient times, captures the romance of young love escalating towards a tragic end. This new work reinforces the notion that love – no matter what age you are, or what age you are in – is eternal and its power everlasting.

One of these stories could be your story. Fate plays a part in all our lives. But, as Shakespeare knew well, love – the most powerful of all human emotions – does not always guarantee a fairytale ending. With music composed by John Babbage and performed live on stage by prolific music ensemble Topology, R&J celebrates contemporary performance at its most bold and powerful.

Freeway: The Chet Baker Journey

Too Much is Never Enough

Kunst Rock (Art Rock)

American jazz trumpeter and singer Chet Baker was the epitome of cool in the 1950s jazz scene. He was famous for his extraordinary talent but infamous for his James Dean good looks, emotionally remote performances and well publicised drug habit.

An inspired, high energy, cabaret romp in which acclaimed Brisbane singer, actress and producer Carita Farrer’s most cherished character, The Drunken Diva, stumbles into life. A tribute show it ain’t but an irreverent look at the delightfully painful public demise of a performer.

With Baker’s destructive life story and boyishly honest music, actor/singer Tim Draxl and writer Bryce Hallett created Freeway Freeway, a musical play offering a glimpse inside the troubled soul behind the headlines.

The integrity of Farrer’s vocal talents and exquisite songbook are superbly matched by piano (and occasional violin) accompaniment by the highly respected composer John Rodgers.

Die Roten Punkte (The Red Dots) are the Prinz and Prinzessin of Berlin’s underground rock scene. Described as ‘a lipstick-smeared, tantrum-loving, sonic collision between the B52s, Kraftwerk and the early Ramones, Die Roten Punkte are truly one of a kind. Astrid’s avant-garde style and legendary antics inspire both reverence and fear, while Otto’s dynamic stage presence brings to mind a whirling dervish on meth.

Gillian Cosgriff Waitressing and Other Things I do Well

International cabaret and concert performer Steve Ross, dubbed the ‘Crown Prince of Cabaret’ by The New York Times, offers audiences an intimate performance with a sophisticated touch, delicious sense of humour and his heartfelt ballads. As a major proponent of the international Songbook, Ross performs an eclectic program consisting of songs by the Gershwin brothers, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Noel Coward with a special nod to the incomparable Fred Astaire.

Accompanied by an extraordinary jazz trio led by Alister Spence, Make Me A King channels Capsis’ neurotic energy and offers a special twist to a range of timeless rock, soul, jazz and blues classics.

The Splendour of Dance Music

Hail the King of Instruments!

Let the orchestra and Eivind Aadland transport you back, with a little help from Bach and Haydn, to the elegance of the eighteenth century aristocracy, when dukes and duchesses, counts and countesses danced minuets and gavottes at court balls amid gilded salons under chandeliers. Succumb to the greatest Broadway waltz from Rogers and Hammerstein’s Carousel and the rustic charm of Dvoˇrák’s Slavonic Dances. Shostakovich is not a composer normally associated with levity, but hear the result of a 1927 challenge for him to arrange a piece of music in 45 minutes: an arrangement of Tea for Two from Vincent Yeomans’ musical No, No, Nanette.

Homage to the king of instruments! Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony is the grandest of his compositions and like all his works, it is suave and full of elegant Gallic melodies but also justly famous for its earth-trembling finale with solo concert organ, two pianists and huge orchestra. Josef Spacek, hailed internationally for his charismatic playing, brings his own unique touch to Max Bruch’s other great work for violin and orchestra, the gloriously tuneful Scottish Fantasy Fantasy, which uses folk themes as raw material from which to develop brilliant and exciting writing for the violin alternating with passages of tender and sometimes passionate expression.

Maestro Series 5: Mahler 6 Mahler’s Dark Night of the Soul

How Music Works: Middle School

Mahler’s Sixth Symphony presents an ideal opportunity to display the impressive synergy achieved by the QSO and Chief Conductor Johannes Fritzsch. Even by Mahler’s own standards, this searingly personal drama generates relentlessly maintained tension, from the grim opening march to the finale, where audiences are swept along on the wildest ride you’ll ever experience in a concert hall, towards the abyss.... Firstly, music which produced a very different kind of frenzy: husband and wife duo Natalia Lomeiko, violin and Yuri Zhislin, viola, reprise their sensational 2010 performance of Mozart’s brilliant Sinfonia Concertante K.364, to delight with duet playing at the highest level. Perfection!

Have you ever wanted an orchestra at your disposal to teach the elements of music? Well, wait no longer, as conductor Warwick Potter does all the hard work and leads your students through some of classical music’s finest offerings with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Maestro Series 6: Beethoven 7 Beethoven’s Apotheosis of the Dance

The QSO reaches fever pitch under the baton of Eivind Aadland, in Wagner’s exploration of the agony and ecstasy of extreme passion, from alpha to omega. Argentinian firebrand and Martha Argerich favourite, Sergio Tiempo, hailed as one of the most thought-provoking pianists of his generation, unleashes his stylish panache and bravura on Liszt’s revolutionary Piano Concerto No.1. Rarely has so much virtuosity been concentrated into one concerto. Finally, abandon yourself to Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony – dubbed by Wagner ‘the apotheosis of the dance’– whose intoxicating joy and energy, climaxing in the orgiastic final movement, never fail to inspire an equally frenzied and heartfelt ovation.

Australian Chamber Orchestra Baroque Virtuosi

Maestro Series 7: Beethoven and Bruckner

The Australian Chamber Orchestra, famously an ensemble of star musicians playing period instruments, performs a selection of dazzling Baroque concertos. Starting with Corelli’s sparring between groups of musicians, through Vivaldi’s showstopper for four violins, to the Devil’s Trill Trill, written note for note from a performance by Satan dreamt by Tartini, the Baroque concertos are combined with some of the best Australian music for string orchestra.

In one of the musical high points of 2011, Johannes Fritzsch confirms his credentials as a fine Brucknerian in the mighty Fifth Symphony. Bruckner was humble and deeply religious and his massive symphonies are inevitably compared to Gothic cathedrals. Like the faith of the people who constructed those cathedrals, Bruckner’s sonorities move heaven and earth, as well as audiences.

‘What a pleasure and yet what a shock it is to be reminded of just how remarkable a performance can be’

Bruckner’s Cathedral of Sound

To open the concert, Duncan Gifford, hailed internationally as a major artist of his generation, makes a welcome return to Australia to conclude the QSO’s Beethoven piano concerto series with the Concerto No.2, a work of elegance, poise and refinement.

THE SCOTSMAN

Australian Chamber Orchestra Schubert String Quintet Dramatic, vulnerable, consoling, inspiring, sublime: Schubert’s String Quintet is classical music at its most transcendent. Bach’s Musical Offering, an ingenious response to a musical challenge from Frederick the Great, is interwoven with Webern’s exquisite cello miniatures and Stravinsky’s extraordinary chamber music in this performance by the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Principal musicians.

Queensland Youth Symphony Rite of Spring

Music on Sundays 5: Not the Last Night of the Proms!

The Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition

Queensland Youth Symphony presents one of the greatest orchestral masterworks from the 20th century: Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Audiences are enthusiastic about its touching melodies and mesmerizing rhythms. Being one of the world’s leading youth orchestras, the intuitive and energetic musical expressions of QYS will add even more sparks to this great performance.

This riotous celebration of the best of British music includes music by Delius, Ireland, Arne, Wood, Zimmer, Parry, Grainger, Elgar, Arnold including favourites Jerusalem, Fantasia on British Sea Songs, Land of Hope and Glory Glory, Rule Britannia and Pirates of the Caribbean. Don your Union Jack waistcoats and bring some flags for what has now become an annual celebration which captures the unique spirit and ambience of London’s BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall and brings out the inner Brit in all of us. The sun will never set on the British Empire, nor will it ever set on these stirring, rollicking tunes, including all your old favourites guaranteed to bring a tear to the eye. Rule Britannia!

For two weeks in August, piano music-lovers will be treated to 20 of the finest young pianists from across Australia and New Zealand competing in front of an international jury, including Hiroko Nakamura (Japan) and Jan Jiracek von Arnim (Austria), for more than $50 000 in prizes. Join the thrill of the final spectacular evening as the four competition finalists each perform a full concerto with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, conducted by internationally renowned Maestro Edvard Tchivzhel. Come along and experience the exciting atmosphere of music making at its highest level and cast your vote for the People’s Choice Prize. The full two week festival also includes competition rounds, masterclasses and recitals given by prominent national and international jury members.

Turmoil and Passion Passion rules! When Hector Berlioz’s stormy love affair with Irish actress, Harriett Smithson, turned sour, the result was one broken French heart and the Symphonie Fantastique, the ultimate Gothic musical phantasmagoria, which has been keeping audiences on the edge of their seats for almost 200 years. Australian tenor, Steve Davislim, whose singing The Guardian hailed as ‘awesome’, joins podium dynamo Guillaume Tourniaire in Ernst Chausson’s exquisitely dreamy and deeply moving rumination on love and loss, Poème de l’amour et de la mer mer. César Franck’s tone poem depicts a man whose passion for hunting, even on the Sabbath, earned him eternal damnation.

Animal Farm

By Tennessee Williams

by George Orwell adapted and created by shake & stir theatre co

The members of a Deep South family are at each other’s throats. There’s a quarrel over an inheritance from a patriarch who doesn’t even know he is dying. There’s a repressed alcoholic husband who takes a swing at his malcontent wife. Lies, insecurities, pettiness, greed, secret passions and self-deception – all fascinating elements of the human condition brilliantly depicted in Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The Pollitt family is wealthy, but dysfunctional and heading for a crisis. With his single-minded focus of tending to his considerable estate, Big Daddy has neglected his brood – in particular his son, washed-up football star Brick, who is having his own difficulties with his vivacious wife Maggie.

‘A searingly honest portrait of families and relationships’ THE AGE

Four legs good, two legs bad. In August 2011, Animal Farm, one of the most controversial and studied political commentaries arrives in Brisbane in a brand new production combining physical theatre, animation and multi-media. Playing at the Cremorne Theatre for a strictly limited season, George Orwell’s simple yet intensely powerful fairy tale illustrates how greed and absolute power corrupts absolutely and, with devastating consequences, can change the course of history. Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and under the principles of ‘Animalism’ a better life free from human service is promised to all.

Guided by a simple set of rules and an unrelenting respect for authority, it is not long until the rules that promised freedom become the chains that bind the animals once again. Directed by Michael Futcher and brought to life by shake & stir theatre co and a cast of Queensland’s most dynamic actors, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, exciting, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events of 2011.
