Welcome to Out of the Box 2016, a unique festival curated by QPAC for our youngest arts audiences. Children deserve high quality arts experiences and no other event in Australia brings together art and education as magically as Out of the Box, engaging children, teachers, parents and carers. Growing the creative intelligence of our next generation of Queenslanders is key to developing innovative thinking. At this year’s festival the K8 Symposium invites children to reflect on our society and share their view of the world, helping to develop new ways to approach the challenges of our time. The Queensland Government has supported Out of the Box since its inception in 1992. QPAC works in partnership with Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, State Library and Queensland Museum, across our unique Cultural Precinct, to realise a common focus on the arts, giving a voice to children as both creators and participants. Congratulations to QPAC for their vision in presenting this flagship festival and thank you to the staff and volunteers who make it possible. I invite you to enjoy Out of the Box 2016. The Hon. Annastacia Palaszczuk MP Premier and Minister for the Arts
Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s Out of the Box is an internationally recognised festival that celebrates early childhood arts participation and learning experiences. One of only a few festivals dedicated to children under eight in the world, and Australia’s largest early childhood festival, Out of the Box has been curated by QPAC since 1992. Over the course of its 24 years Out of the Box has created a lasting legacy and made an impact in the lives of many young Queenslanders. Learning by participating in the arts has many benefits – it encourages creative problem solving, teamwork, independence. Arts based learning gives children the chance to set the pace of learning by placing them as the leaders and experts. Increasingly, QPAC is known internationally as a leader in arts education and as a centre that curates a broad and relevant program that is diverse. The aim in all that we do is to create a world where the performing arts matters to everyone and through Out of Box we are encouraging children to learn from a young age, that their voices are important and their contribution to the arts is important. I look forward to sharing this year’s Out of the Box with you. Chris Freeman AM Chair
Out of the Box is one of QPAC’s most significant and cherished programs and so it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to engage in this year’s festival. Since 1992, QPAC has curated Out of the Box as a biennial festival with the focus of engaging the minds of our youngest citizens. At its heart, Out of the Box is about connecting audiences and artists; about presenting works and ideas that capture the imaginations of children and help them to understand the world around them. Out of the Box is about having fun, exploring, learning and being entertained, and for many young audience members introducing them to the world of the arts and to QPAC. There are many wonderful works of art in this year’s festival – newly commissioned pieces, Australian premieres and collaborations with local artists. The landscape of this year’s festival begins at QPAC and extends throughout the Cultural Precinct and into South Bank. I am excited to share this festival with you and hope to see you in June. John Kotzas Chief Executive
Today my son skipped to school – when did I stop doing that? Out of the Box 2016 explores the value of children’s thinking now, as engaged, meaningful, insightful humans, and places them at the centre of the creative and educational process. The festival team have asked the question, “What do children know that we don’t know?” From their answers we have delivered arts experiences to open up those ideas, bring them forth, learn from and celebrate them. We also explore the communities that children belong to, and in particular, embrace the cultures of the Asian and Pacific regions as they are now so predominant in children’s lives. You will see references to cultures from across the subcontinent and also from our Indigenous people woven through the program, opening up and bringing closer understanding and ideas of people from different parts of the world. This is a festival of little experts and big communities, of bold productions and intimate encounters and of electrifying moments and contemplative experiences. We are incredibly proud to be sharing it with you, and I hope that your journey through the program will be playfully entertaining and mindblowingly artistic. Brett Howe Festival Director

CREATIVE CREATURES AN OUT OF THE BOX FESTIVAL PRODUCTION
Lanterns - Creative Creatures is a stunning installation that is the result of creative workshops across Queensland schools to design and build a magical lantern canopy for Out of the Box 2016. As part of the creation process, participants used their imagination and original ideas to create a creature - a person, animal or other being, real or mythical. What makes the greatest Creative Creature of all time? Is it one billion spiderlike hands used to paint the tallest skyscraper? A large bulging belly used to power the loudest voice? Or the fastest tinkering of tapping toes you have ever seen! By day, the installation promises an eye-popping extravaganza of lanterns of varying shapes, colours and sizes; by night it will light up QPAC and the Cultural Forecourt in a display not to be missed.
