Monster sized imagination Every child has a monster sized imagination. It feeds on curiosity and serious fun. It’s a playful, extraordinary, thriving creature. Every monster imagination is different. There are gentle ones, there are wild ones. Some love music. Others love to dance. They all love to play. Some even ask questions...big, hard ones. But what they all have in common is this: A monster imagination is a child’s best friend. Together they can create the most wonderful things – ideas, artworks and stories to be cherished. This Out of the Box festival is designed for children and their monster sized imaginations. Use this brochure to design an entertaining day that you can all share together. WELCOME TO OUT OF THE BOX QPAC’s Out of the Box has entertained, inspired and captivated children for over twenty years. In 2014 it returns to QPAC to shine a spotlight on the world’s best arts and culture for children eight years and under. This year the program explores the many relationships children have with living creatures, both real and imaginary – human, animal, monster, friend. Out of the Box takes place across the Cultural Precinct, from its hub at QPAC to the State Library of Queensland, Queensland Museum and Queensland Art Gallery and GoMA. Since the festival’s inception in 1992, QPAC has provided national leadership in the area of early childhood arts education through Out of the Box. The festival is committed to informing and inspiring babies, children, parents, grandparents, care-givers, clinicians and teachers. It is built on the simple foundation that children matter and that arts rich experiences lead to a sense of unfolding discovery in children and adults alike. A creative and innovative economy is going to drive innovation and growth in the future. I hope that those children who participate in and create art during Out of the Box will be inspired to become some of our creative leaders in future generations. The Hon. Children matter. Out of the Box is a festival that celebrates that fact and encourages children to voice their opinions and stories, participate in and create artworks, to be naturally curious and to play. Now in its 22nd year, Out of Box provides a remarkable line-up of the country’s best artists and companies in a rich program that incorporates a range of free events and activities. QPAC has partnered with our Cultural Precinct colleagues for an immersive experience for families across the Precinct. We thank them for their on-going support for the Festival and the expertise they offer in children’s arts literacy. QPAC and QUT co-present this year’s Symposium – the International Teaching Artists Conference (ITAC). ITAC joins artists and teachers in conversation with their international colleagues over 3 days. As a former teacher, I believe this event will be one of intense learning and discussion and I am proud we will be hosting world experts working at the forefront of arts education. For everyone at QPAC, Out of the Box is a treasured event on our calendar. I invite you and your families to take a step into the imagination of a child through Out of the Box and experience one of QPAC’s most loved events. Carnival of the Animals
WORLD PREMIERE
Internationally acclaimed circus company, Circa, famed for their inventiveness, precision, and creativity, bring the joy of the animal kingdom to the Lyric Theatre stage in this physical theatre extravaganza. A blend of circus, multimedia and music, Carnival of the Animals is a magical reinvention of the classic music by French composer, Camille Saint-Saëns. Depicting creatures from land, sea and sky, Circa’s performers take children and their adults on a safari through the lives of the tortoise, the elephant, the kangaroo, the swan, the life aquatic and many other beasts.
Featuring large digital projections and huge silk swathes, the stage is transformed into a series of wonderous animal habitats, while performers stun audiences with acrobatic feats and aerial skills. It’s an exuberant celebration of life on earth and the power of our bodies to express who we really are. Like many children, Henry loves books. But Henry doesn’t like to read books, he likes to eat them. Big books, picture books, reference books... if it has pages, Henry chews them up and swallows. And the more he eats, the smarter he gets. He’s on his way to being the smartest boy in the world, but one day he feels sick to his stomach. And the information is so jumbled up inside, he can’t digest it! Can Henry find a way to enjoy books without using his teeth? A cast of three performers use theatre, song, movement and beautiful puppetry to bring Oliver Jeffers’ quirky, much loved story to life on stage. It’s good enough to eat! But then he does have incredibly sharp teeth, yellow eyes and his own ideas about personal hygiene, and he is the infamous Big Bad Wolf after all. Luckily one girl is brave enough to double check this wolf’s bad press and an unlikely friendship is born.

Aston’s Stones A story about a little dog who wants to take care of all the stones he can find. Aston takes his stones home to his warm and cosy bed. As Aston’s life is gradually taken over by stones, he needs to find them new homes. Swedish company, Teater Pero, reflects on the capacity of young children to show love and empathy, and reminds us how important it is to appreciate the value of small things – even little stones.

Saltbush Children’s Cheering Carpet. Saltbush is an exquisite interactive journey through the culture and landscape of Aboriginal Australia, celebrated through live dance, music, song, digital projections and stories. Join two friends from different Aboriginal backgrounds as they cross Australia on foot. Using sensors and infra-red image technology, children are invited to explore, play and dance with the performers as the landscape unfolds around them, providing a unique immersive experience where the audience can become part of this visually beautiful journey. Out of the Box 2014 Keynote Address Russell Granet, Executive Director of the Lincoln Center Education (New York), the educational cornerstone of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, US. Bollywood is loved the world over for its colourful and expressive interpretation of stories through song and dance. Get your kids moving with a workshop by Dance Masala, to learn the iconic moves that makes these movies so popular.
Learn how to play the awe-inspiring taiko drum with members of Australia’s TaikOz. Enjoy this unique experience that will allow you to feel the awesome power of the taiko, the vitality of the rhythm and the fun of making music in a group. Learn basic technique and a short piece of music and unleash your creativity in this unique drumming workshop.

Los Angeles-based Australian artist Jemima Wyman shares her interests in the relationships between pattern, people and architecture with young visitors through the immersive exhibition Pattern Bandits. Children can enter this brightly coloured and highly patterned world and explore different patterns − kaleidoscopes, tessellations, camouflage, harlequin − with specially designed hands-on and multimedia activities.
