Foreword

Thank you for coming on this journey with us.

Q

PAC is a living and active part of Brisbane and Queensland. Over 30 years, QPAC’s role as the State’s leading performing arts centre that contributes to the social, intellectual and cultural development of Queenslanders, has evolved…QPAC is a connected community hub that links audiences and artists; supports local and national companies; develops and produces new works; presents a wide ranging program with appeal to a broad cross-section of society; and encourages public debate around the role of the arts in our community. QPAC is a public space that welcomes more than one million visitors annually and is an industry leader within Queensland’s vibrant arts community. As you will see in the pages of our Year in Review there have been many exceptional moments at QPAC in 2014. People visit for a variety of reasons, but QPAC’s driving mission – to engage people through the performing arts – creates the space and opportunity for people to be enriched by their experiences in the theatre and throughout QPAC’s public spaces.

QPAC’s success is linked with many people and organisations. The Queensland Government, who provides tangible support to QPAC in our operational grant, is invaluable to the success of our expansive program and accessibility. More than that, they are one of our strongest allies in understanding why the arts should be valued in our society. Our staff, of whom all are passionate about the arts, work tirelessly to ensure QPAC’s reputation as a leading performing arts centre. The many artists, producers, presenters and companies that we partner and collaborate with, who develop and present productions that entertain and have the power to transport audiences away from their everyday lives, further inspire us as we open the doors each day. Perhaps most importantly are those that make up our audience: the people who choose to spend their time and resources on live arts experiences. Thank you for coming on this journey with us. CURATE

Mindful choices, meaningful outcomes. A

t QPAC, curating is a multidimensional process of exchange between audiences, communities and experts. Curating relies on discipline, research and leadership. It requires agility, knowledge and hope. It is a process that assists communities to celebrate, interrogate, participate and reflect on being part of a vibrant civic culture. Curating is not a

science but a delicate weaving together of content and expertise, often within the context of competing priorities. Applying a curatorial lens to our activity enables us to engage in long term planning, connect in more meaningful and relevant ways to our audiences, partners and industry colleagues, and to be more interconnected with the community.

JANUARY

Amazing. They were absolutely fantastic. AAA+” – STEPHEN, AUDIENCE REVIEW, QPAC WEBSITE

January

Q

PAC’s annual program showcases a broad range of performing arts experiences. This year, there were more than 1200 performances across 233 seasons. One of the most popular genres of performance is musical theatre with more than 40% of all audiences each year attending performances in this genre. Musical theatre is the main genre programmed in the Lyric Theatre: this year QPAC presented three major musicals beginning with The Rocky Horror Show in January, followed by The King and I and The Lion King. Due in part to the high venue utilisation of the Lyric Theatre, QPAC invested in a proscenium arch for the Concert Hall to enhance the staging capability of this venue. Productions such as The Illusionists 2.0 made full use of this new staging to create an atmospheric live show which provided a rich and multilayered audience experience. QPAC continues to investigate ways to equip our theatres and venues to be more responsive and flexible.

Q

PAC works with companies, artists, producers, presenters and content creators curating a program that speaks to many people. In Queensland there is a strong and dynamic arts industry. At QPAC, more than half of all seasons are by local Queensland companies. Queensland’s four major performing arts companies - Opera Queensland, Queensland Ballet, Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Queensland Theatre Company – are considered by QPAC as our home companies. Their main performance seasons take place at QPAC and QPAC collaborates with the home companies in many ways both on stage and off. A balanced

program begins locally. This year, our home companies once again proved their appeal is wider than the local community with many outstanding performances garnering national and international attention. QPAC also supports local companies through residencies. Currently, QPAC has four resident companies – Brisbane Writers Festival, Camerata of St John’s, Nguin Warrup and Southern Cross Soloists. While residency is different, the aim is to make them mutually beneficial for both QPAC and resident company while building capacity among our local artists and ensuring the longevity and vibrancy of the industry.

hile one of the main functions of any performing arts centre is to present live performance, the idea of centres being not much more than a stage has evolved and expanded over many years. QPAC encourages discussion and debate about the arts and the wider community and this year hosted a number of sessions, including TEDxKurlipa, bringing together the community to debate the big issues. QPAC’s success is linked with the success of many partners and collaborators. As well as the local and national arts industries, QPAC works with a number of organisations and individuals who are passionate about the importance of the arts. Exhibitions and installations are presented in the Tony Gould Gallery throughout the year to complement what you see on stage. This year QPAC Museum presented two major exhibitions – Page to Stage: Costume Design for Performance and The Art of The Lion King. The QPAC Museum also curates installation pieces in the QPAC Tunnel. There were six tunnel installations this year which were viewed by thousands of people attending the centre. They were: QPAC Loves Musicals, Living History, Making Musicals and The King & II, Out of the Box, Point to Pointe: Dance in America and Telling the Tale. EXPERIENCE

Distinct places, exceptional experiences. W e believe public spaces should serve more than one primary purpose and be a meeting ground for people to connect with self, one another and the city’s cultural life. Creating a memorable visit requires a clear perspective on the dynamics between artists, audience and setting. Our theatres remain the core of our building but our desire to be a more open,

accessible and relevant public space requires us to look to opportunities beyond the stage – digital, satellite, online, outdoor and off-site. We strive to involve audiences and the general public in creating, doing and evaluating what we do so we become a place of constant change and energy.

PAC’s biennial festival, featured over 400 performances (more than three-quarters of which were free) and attracted 103 000 attendances this year. The festival featured two newly commissioned works and world premieres: Carnival of the Animals, in collaboration with Queensland company Circa; and Nursery, an immersive musical experience for babies from internationally renowned artist Sally Chance. Through this festival, QPAC encourages learning activities via participation in the arts. For the 2014 festival, this included online guidance to help parents, guardians and teachers prepare for the festival as well as tips on getting to and around the festival. Cues to help interpret various visual stimuli, vocabulary and meaning used in shows were also available to help deepen children’s engagement and assist parents, guardians and teachers to discuss what they had seen and experienced. A

s part of the Out of the Box festival, QPAC and Queensland University of Technology’s (QUT’s) Creative Industries Faculty co-hosted the Second International Teaching Artists Conference (ITAC2). The term ‘teaching artist’ refers to someone who is an expert or practicing artist whose skills enable them to assist communities to learn through the arts. Attended by teachers, artists and teaching artists from around the world, ITAC2 looked at the how teaching artists interact with arts organisations, communities, and in the digital sphere. Keynote speakers included teaching artist Eric Booth and Russell Granet from Lincoln Center Education. Day 2 of the conference was held at the Out of the Box festival so delegates could attend performances and exhibitions, observe other teaching artists at work and talk to children and their families.

his year QPAC recorded more than 1.25 million visitations. For most of those people, their primary purpose in visiting QPAC was to attend a performance or event. While at QPAC, those visitors also passed through foyers and purchased food, drinks and merchandise at QPAC’s outlets. Over 300 000 attended free performance and events at QPAC this year. Two of QPAC’s most popular free events – Green Jam and the The Seed Project – attracted audiences to the Melbourne Street Green on Friday afternoons where students from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University performed. Both programs are popular with audiences but perhaps more importantly they enable students to share their works with a wider audience.

n 2014, America’s national ballet company, American Ballet Theatre made its Australian debut at QPAC. The season was considered a great success by audiences, key stakeholders and partners, and attracted national media coverage. The QPAC International Series has positioned QPAC as a cultural leader and contributor to cultural tourism. Members of the American Ballet Theatre company were thrilled with the company’s Australian debut season. As with previous International Series seasons, the mainstage performances were complemented by a series of Insight Events including free public dance classes at QPAC, a live simulcast to regional venues around Queensland, backstage tours, a program of American dance movies, a Conversation Series, a dedicated exhibition about the history of ballet and the opportunity to watch a rehearsal. The QPAC International Series is a partnership between QPAC and Tourism and Events Queensland to bring seasons from internationallyrenowned companies exclusively to Brisbane. Building on QPAC’s program to showcase the best in local, national and international performance, the International Series enables audiences in Brisbane to experience the world’s best companies without having to leave the city. CE AFTERWORD

Afterword QPAC is entangled within the wider community.

T

he modern performing arts centre was a concept conceived in the mid-20th century. Traditionally they were places where people attended to see art but not necessarily connect with art. When QPAC was conceived of more than 30 years ago it was to establish a physical space in the heart of Brisbane where people could gather and take part in the performing arts, be it as audience member or performer. Over three decades QPAC has grown with the economic and social success of Brisbane. The Cultural Precinct and South Bank have become some of the most active parts of Brisbane, filled with artists, thinkers and observers. Alongside this is a growing citywide sense of pride that comes from living in Brisbane. In recent years, QPAC has enticed a number of high profile major performing arts companies from around the world to visit Brisbane exclusively. Though smaller in population than our southern counterparts these visits have expanded QPAC’s, and Queensland’s reputation as an attractive cultural tourism destination.

ABT Welcome to Country Photo Darren Thomas

Today, QPAC is an entangled part of a larger community…of artists, producers and performers; of our local arts industry here at the Cultural Precinct and more widely across Queensland and Australia; of an international collective of artists with whom we work and collaborate; of a state government that supports us in achieving our mission of bringing arts experiences to as many people as possible; of our staff who are in the wings creating magic each day; and of our audiences without whom we may not present our shows. In recent years the interplay between artist and audience and engaging with people has changed. As we approach a milestone – 30 years – we are mindful of where we have come from, we are taking a quiet moment of proud reflection for our current circumstances and we are looking ahead to the horizon of endless possibilities. I am proud to share this journey with you. John Kotzas Chief Executive
