Welcome

Welcome to QPAC. This summer we are excited to present a wide ranging program offering interesting, informative and entertaining live performances. For musical theatre fans, two beloved classics return to QPAC’s Lyric Theatre: The Wizard of Oz starring wicked witches Lucy Durack and Jemma Rix, and MAMMA MIA! – the ultimate feel good musical. At the end of February, the Queensland premiere season of Disney’s Aladdin takes over the Lyric Theatre. Cult classic, The Rocky Horror Show also enjoys a run on a modified Concert Hall stage in January 2018.

From December, there are a number of programs which will appeal to families and those celebrating Christmas including QPAC’s longest running annual event, Spirit of Christmas, a musical celebration featuring Christmas music, songs and carols as well as showcasing some of the talented musicians of tomorrow from the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. Queensland Ballet and Queensland Symphony Orchestra also offer special Christmas programming – The Nutcracker and Messiah respectively – both of which are highly anticipated finales to round out their 2017 seasons. And for those looking for something more off-beat, the wildly funny and rather odd A Very Kransky Christmas is a must. Over the summer school holidays, SummerSet will take over QPAC with productions from Australia and around the world. From the whimsical to the absurd, for aspiring scientists, inventors, explorers and dreamers, SummerSet is a curated program bringing together some of the best live performance experiences for families under one roof. I hope you enjoy summer and all that it brings – warmer weather, time with family, a chance to reflect on the year that was and look forward to what 2018 may entail. See you at QPAC soon!

BACH’S CHRISTMAS ORATORIO 6 December | Concert Hall 4 hours (incl interval) The last time the ACO performed Bach’s Christmas Oratorio critics, audiences and the Orchestra themselves considered it the concert of the year. Bach’s monumental and colourful work was composed in 1733/34 and was written for each of the six major feast days of the Christmas period. It’s the quintessential Christmas choral extravaganza. Joining the ACO once again for this wonderfully festive oratorio is the Choir of London which was established in 2004 to perform this very work with

a Palestinian Choir on the West Bank. Directed by Richard Tognetti, Nicholas Mulroy makes a welcome return as the Evangelist, ably joined by an ensemble of star singers for this unmissable celebration of the Christmas season with a full rendition of Bach’s choral extravaganza. With an early starting time and running at just under three hours, this performance will include a one-hour meal interval. PRESENTED BY AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

THE BOXTIES: BOUND AWAY TO LEAVE YOU 7 – 9 December | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour and 10 minutes (no interval) Beloved Brisbane band, The Boxties, make their triumphant return to the Cremorne Theatre. In a genre-pushing, theatrical evening The Boxties bring their trademark contemporary vibe and high energy music-making to QPAC in a concert celebrating songs and tales of the sea. The Boxties will feature breathtaking music from Sting’s eleventh studio album The Last Ship alongside haunting favourites that speak of boundless oceans and distant longings – music that has resonated equally in the Old World and the New. This is dynamic ensemble music-making – fresh, bold and thoughtful.

In The Boxties: Bound Away to Leave You they bring together Sting’s soulfulness – and sense of humour – with older material, the kind of music that puts The Last Ship into its wider context – the end of a way of life, and a once mighty empire, slowly fading with the tide. The Boxties have taken a selection of songs from The Last Ship and interspersed them with others from the folk tradition that deal with ideas of community, of love in difficult circumstances, of dreams, and the sea. The intensives will include a unique program filled with specialised classes that will improve dancers in every aspect of ballet.

BLACK IS THE NEW WHITE

TOGNETTI TCHAIKOVSKY BRAHMS

1 – 17 February | Playhouse 2 hours and 30 minutes (incl interval)

12 February | Concert Hall 1 hour and 50 minutes (incl interval)

Two politically powerful families at war. A son and daughter helplessly in love, defying their parents. You’ve heard this story before – but what if Romeo was white, Juliet was black and the war mainly fought on Twitter?

Richard Tognetti leads this big, melodic, and emotively powerful opening to the ACO’s 2018 season. Featuring music by Tchaikovsky, Brahms, America’s Missy Mazzoli and the UK’s Anna Clyne.

After a whirlwind romance, hotshot lawyer Charlotte Gibson and penniless avant-garde cellist Francis Smith are engaged. One thing stands in the way: Charlotte’s the favourite daughter of Australia’s most charismatic Aboriginal politician, and Francis is the son of his dour and stridently conservative rival. It’s been mutual hatred for decades, sparked by an infamous shoe-throwing incident on the floor of parliament. As the two bitterly entrenched families collide in the Gibson’s glitzy holiday mansion over an Aussie Christmas dinner, the long-standing feud comes to a head.

Brahms’ Sextet in G major is rich, melodic and powerful. Tchaikovsky’s soothing Serenade for Strings gives you a chance to gasp for air. Then it’s back to the future with two new works by Missy Mazzoli and Anna Clyne. Mazzoli’s world premiere concerto was commissioned for ACO Principal Double Bass Maxime Bibeau, honouring his 20 years with the Orchestra. PRESENTED BY AUSTRALIAN CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

PIANO POWER 17 February | Concert Hall Duration will be confirmed at qpac.com.au From a concerto written for a pianist with only one hand, to a piece that the composer refused to allow played in his lifetime, this performance is full of music that defies the norm. Be amazed by Scriabin’s symphonic poem that reflects on philosophies as diverse as Buddhism, Nietzsche and Schopenhauer.

Marvel at Debussy’s Fantaisie, that he never allowed to be performed in his lifetime, despite its sensual atmosphere and pure piano power. Be struck by the cleverness of Ravel’s Concerto for Left Hand, commissioned for Paul Wittgenstein who had lost an arm in World War I, as the music soars artistically, making its one hand restriction inconsequential. Pure magic. PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

THE 39 STEPS 24 February – 24 March | Cremorne Theatre 2 hours (incl interval) ADAPTED BY PATRICK BARLOW FROM THE MOVIE BY ALFRED HITCHCOCK AND THE NOVEL BY JOHN BUCHAN DIRECTED BY JON HALPIN

Classic film noir melds seamlessly with zany comedy as Hannay clings to trains, dangles from bridges and is harried across the moors by machine-gun fire – all recreated through fiendishly inventive stage wizardry. With just four actors playing a titanic cast of 139 characters, this riotous retro spy caper is performed at breakneck speed with a knowing wink to the audience and a tip of the hat to Alfred Hitchcock and Tony Hancock.

After a record-breaking season at State Theatre Company South Australia, former Queensland Theatre Associate Director Jon Halpin returns to Brisbane to direct an all-Queensland cast including Hugh Parker and Leon Cain. Scottish author John Buchan’s 1915 novel The ThirtyNine Steps has spawned multiple film adaptations – most famously Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 version. JORDI SAVALL AND HESPÈRION XXI WITH TEMBEMBE ENSAMBLE CONTINUO: FOLÍAS ANTIGUAS & CRIOLLAS – FROM THE ANCIENT WORLD TO THE NEW WORLD 26 February | Concert Hall 2 hours (incl interval) Grammy award winning “early music superstar” (The New York Times) Jordi Savall, and two of his favourite ensembles, Hespèrion XXI and Tembembe Ensamble Continuo, perform at QPAC’s Concert Hall for one night only. Multi-instrumentalist, virtuoso, conductor, scholar, teacher and record label director, Jordi Savall defies categorisation. In a career spanning five decades, he has rescued forgotten medieval, Renaissance and

Baroque treasures from neglect and obscurity and given them back for all to enjoy. In Folías Antiguas & Criollas, the vibrant music of ancient Spain and Mexico is brought to life in a performance that blurs borders between genres, past and present, east and west – all the while keeping Savall’s Spanish/Catalan roots at the heart of his music.
