Welcome It is my great pleasure to welcome you to QPAC this Autumn. As you browse through the pages of What’s On at QPAC, I hope you’ll find a program that is exciting, diverse and sparks an interest in the arts for you. There are a number of programs and performances that we are particularly excited about including the return of internationally-acclaimed Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Joshua Bell and My Fair Lady directed by the acclaimed, Julie Andrews. A new program starts in March with Twilight Notes. This intimate series of concerts takes place on the Concert Hall stage and throughout 2017 features musicians and small ensembles from Australia and around the world. It’s the place to discover new sounds and watch musicians up close. You might find your next great musical inspiration or take a step outside your usual listening tastes and try something new. The first concert is on 29 March and features Finnish pianist Paavali Jumppanen. It’s also exciting to see one of our local companies – shake & stir theatre co. – expanding to the Playhouse with their Australian debut exclusive of Green Day’s American Idiot. This satirical, awardwinning Broadway musical is about three boyhood friends searching for meaning in a post 9/11 world. shake & stir is a home-grown success story and we are really proud to support them as they continue to grow and attract new audiences. If you’re looking for more information on what’s on at QPAC, delve more deeply with QPAC’s Creatory on our website. As one late night blurs into another, and this trio of painfully ordinary people bond over movie trivia, low level embezzling and shared ennui, the play evolves into a deeply moving, funny

4 March | Concert Hall 2 hours and 40 minutes (incl interval)

The gala season opener, Classique, brings Camerata together with Australian violinist Jane Peters, in a program that shimmers with classical elegance and refined romanticism.

One of Australia’s most versatile and talented entertainers, Silvie Paladino is thrilled to be headlining our much anticipated first concert of the 2017 series. Thomas Armstrong-Robley will co-star in this fabulous potpourri of great music.

Jane Peters made her stage debut at age ten and came to national attention two years later as winner of the Showcase Competition on Australian television. A former prize-winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition, Jane Peters’ exclusive Australian appearance includes an unconducted performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto and Mozart’s tender Adagio. For the first time Camerata will perform Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony and Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite, highly refined works by Russian composers that look back to earlier classical era music for inspiration.

Maestro Patrick Pickett CSM has devised a sublime program of heart-stirring music to launch the 2017 series with an emphasis on that most divine musical combination, the duet. Whether it’s the two wonderful guest vocalists singing in harmony, or a showcase pair drawn from the Queensland Pops Orchestra’s fine stable of musicians, audiences can be assured of a superb afternoon of entertainment. THE NEW NORMAL: THE QUANTUM AGE OF COMPUTING

22 March | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour and 30 minutes (no interval)

23 March | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour and 30 minutes (no interval)

Despite adequate water supply to sustain our current population, more than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water.

Are we ready to take this quantum leap?

In 2014, the United Nations set a 2030 target for achieving universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all. The challenge is complicated by the complex interplay of profit, politics, and pollution, along with climate change, population growth and agricultural expansion. Water experts from around the globe discuss transformative technologies, data analytics and engineering innovations that could democratise access. Participants: Monica Araya, Stuart Bunn, Paul Greenfield, Andras Szöllösi-Nagy, Poh-Ling Tan and Charles Vörösmarty.

Quantum technology promises everything from improved traffic flow to faster gene sequencing and targeted pharmaceutical research. Alarmingly, it also has the potential to render current encryption codes not so cryptic, which would threaten cybersecurity for websites, internet, cloud-based and mobile communication providers. In this forward-thinking discussion, some of the leading lights of the quantum age of technology will examine the opportunities and challenges posed by this brave new world of computing. Technological advances are challenging our expectations of privacy. Is ‘unplugging’ the only alternative?

Public surveillance, cybercrime, and metadata retention each affects our right to privacy and impacts the way we live our increasingly connected and digitally documented lives. Balancing the security needs of the many against the rights of an individual is a challenging dilemma. Our hyper-vigilant panel of technological and social commentators delves into a modern-day crisis that is redefining our public and private worlds, online and off.

MICROPLASTICS: A MACRO PROBLEM

OCEAN ACTION: HOW CAN SCIENCE SAVE THIS PRECIOUS ENVIRONMENT?

26 March | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour and 30 minutes (no interval)

26 March | Concert Hall 1 hour and 30 minutes (no interval)

It’s difficult to imagine a life without plastic. But what if the alternative is a life without oceans?

As the impact of human industrialisation flows into our ocean, what action can mankind take to address the devastating environmental effects?

The aggregated waste of modern living is choking entire marine ecosystems. Plastics and their degraded version, microplastics, are one of the major threats to our oceans, and their clean up poses a giant engineering and logistical challenge. Microplastic particles are infiltrating even the most remote waters, disrupting the marine food chain and leaching toxins into delicate ecosystems.

Climate change, acidification, overfishing, habitat destruction, population growth and plastic pollution are just some of the factors affecting the health of our marine environment. However, data analytics and sophisticated surveillance along with innovations in bio-monitoring and ‘smart’ engineering may improve our ability to address future challenges.

Our panel of leading environmental thinkers discusses what can be done to counter this compounding and devastating issue.

Our panel of environmental experts examines how human ingenuity and innovation might hold the key to preventing further damage.

Participants: Mark Browne, Jon Dee, Tanya Ha, Gay Hawkins and Tony Roberts.

Participants: Rod Connolly, Arnold Dekker, Tanya Ha, Emma Johnston and Gretta Pecl.

UNDER THE MICROSCOPE: PIONEERING WOMEN IN SCIENCE

DISCOVERING DEGAS: THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE ART

26 March | Concert Hall 1 hour and 30 minutes (no interval)

26 March | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour (no interval)

In the footsteps of Marie Curie, Jane Goodall and Mary Jackson, four contemporary women of science share their stories of struggle and success.

In 2016, Australian scientists revealed the hidden image beneath Edgar Degas’ ‘Portrait of a Woman’.

Join ABC’s Geraldine Doogue to discover how these driven and exceptional individuals forged their way to the top of their professions through personal revelations of success, perseverance, Eureka moments and confessions of experiments they might rather forget.

When the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) and the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) collaborated to reconstruct a long-suspected image hidden beneath Degas’ 1870s brushstrokes they harnessed an advanced fluorescence mapping technique and an x-ray beam one million times brighter than the sun.

This inspiring event will include a presentation of the 2017 Queensland Women in STEM Prize: a national competition recognising pioneering women in STEM.

The team behind this remarkable revelation shares their experience of discovery and discuss new technologies that are transforming forensic curation in the art world and beyond.

Participants: Monica Araya, Emma Johnston, Suzanne Miller and Kerrie Wilson.

Participants: Marco Leona, Andrew Peele and Michael Varcoe–Cocks.
