Welcome
Welcome to QPAC. The weather is getting warmer and the days longer, the perfect time to visit QPAC after work, on the weekend, or go online and find out what’s on offer to enrich your day, enliven your night and inspire you.
The Brisbane Festival returns in September with a wide-ranging program of events and experiences. Festivals are the ideal place to discover something new and take a chance on a genre or performer or style that you’ve always wanted to try. Two musicals grace the Lyric Theatre stage – the Brisbane premiere season of Kinky Boots and the return of a classic favourite, The Wizard of Oz. Bangarra Dance Theatre returns to Brisbane with a new work, Bennelong, based on the life of Woollarawarre Bennelong. The final instalments of QPAC’s Twilight Notes for 2017 will take place on the Concert Hall stage with Debussy Quartet in September and Joseph Tawadros Trio in October. A charming and whimsical production, Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories, will delight audiences from eight years onwards in the Playhouse. And of course, our many wonderful home and local companies bring to QPAC a wealth of works showcasing our talented Queensland artists and performers. If you’re attending performances in the Cremorne Theatre, you may notice a changed space after recent upgrades to the theatre. The Cremorne is our smallest but most versatile theatre space. We are excited that this refurbishment will provide more opportunities for artists to perform new and interesting works in this intimate theatre. Enjoy browsing what we have coming up at QPAC this spring and I look forward to seeing you around the Centre soon.

PER TE 9 – 16 September | Playhouse 2 hours (incl interval) DEDICATED TO YOU, DEAR JULIE. WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY DANIELE FINZI PASCA COMPAGNIA FINZI PASCA (SWITZERLAND)
From one of the world’s great performance companies – and creators of last year’s La Verità – comes this exclusive Australian premiere of astonishing circus and physical theatre. A gutted stage. Around a red bench in a garden, acrobats stand in medieval armour. Thirty kilograms of steel transform every move into a battle of
resistance and strength. It is three months before the premiere of their show. They remember Julie, their friend and great visionary. Through exquisite images of words and music, shared humour, and a beautiful storm of flying objects, they build an inner garden where we may take shelter. This is a story for you – a light-filled hymn to life, to the amazing power of theatre and imagination, and to the fundamental importance of friendship in our tempest-tossed lives. EMMANUEL PAHUD 9 October | Concert Hall 2 hours (incl interval) The world’s greatest living flautist Emmanuel Pahud is back! Twelve years after his Australian debut with the ACO, one of Richard Tognetti’s great musical friends returns. This program is like an historical adventure – tracing the Franco-Germanic lineage from Bach senior, to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, through to Franck, Debussy, Ravel and Boulez. And it gives our soloist an opportunity to stand alone in the spotlight with CPE Bach’s Flute Sonata and
Debussy’s Syrinx, which may well be the greatest solo flute piece of all time. Ravel’s String Quartet, is brimming with seductive melodies, iridescent pizzicato passages, colourful trill effects and luscious harmonies. Franck’s great Violin Sonata, arranged here for flute and strings by Richard Tognetti, is testament to Franck’s influence over such composers as Ravel, Debussy and Boulez. BAMBERT’S BOOK OF LOST STORIES 11 – 15 October | Playhouse 1 hour and 10 minutes (no interval) Adapted for the stage by Dan Giovannoni and Luke Kerridge from Bamberts Buch der verschollnen Geschichten by Reinhardt Jung
This is the story of Bambert – an impossibly small man with an enormous love for writing. Tucked away in his quiet attic, his only companions are the characters he has created in his stories. And then one day, Bambert decides to set his stories free, to send them out into the world on little balloons, in the hope that they will find a home. The stories contain instructions: whoever finds them is to return them to Bambert with a stamp from wherever they landed, so he knows where they should be set. But as each day passes, and no stories return, Bambert’s hope begins to fade.
Will his stories ever find a home? Winner of the 2016 Helpmann Award for Best Children’s Presentation and following a season at the prestigious Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories brings together some of Australia’s most creative theatrical minds to realise this exquisite and heart-warming tale. In turn joyous and melancholy, this must-see family production reminds us of how stories connect us to the world and ultimately, of the power of kindness.
