Welcome

QPAC is the place to be this winter. We have curated a wideranging, exciting program of events and experiences that will draw you to the Centre and connect you to our arts-loving community. The Queensland Cabaret Festival returns, two new musicals arrive – The Bodyguard and Kinky Boots, our home and resident companies feature a mix of new and classic works, and our new program, Twilight Notes, continues to present a series of intimate concerts.

One of our signature events – the QPAC International Series – returns in June with an Australian exclusive presentation by London’s The Royal Ballet. Direct from their home in Covent Garden, The Royal Ballet brings a company of leading dancers to the Lyric Theatre stage. Their two-week residency at QPAC is a highlight on our 2017 calendar and features two works never before performed outside of the Ballet’s home at the Royal Opera House. This is an event not to be missed. The Royal Ballet open their exclusive season with the fresh, new and quite simply amazing, Woolf Works. Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production, with choreography by The Royal Ballet’s Resident Choreographer, Wayne McGregor, and featuring a score crafted especially by Max Richter, Woolf Works is a triptych ballet based on the writings, life and works of Virginia Woolf. The Winter’s Tale, based on the play by William Shakespeare features choreography by The Royal Ballet’s Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon and music by Joby Talbot. This story of love, betrayal and forgiveness lends itself perfectly to dance. Since its premiere in 2014, it has been critically acclaimed and is fast becoming a future classic. Find out more about The Royal Ballet and their residency at QPAC through The Creatory on our website. As always at QPAC, there is more to what you see than is happening on stage, and different ways to connect with us and share your love of the performing arts. I hope to see you at QPAC soon.

THE NECKS 1 June | Concert Hall 2 hours and 45 minutes (incl interval) One of the great cult bands of Australia, The Necks, will make their QPAC debut in a concert event that promises to be a hypnotic and thrilling emotional journey into the unknown. Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. With no two performances alike, The Necks invent their music in real time. A live performance can

typically begin very quietly with one of the musicians playing something very simple and, one by one, the other two will join with their own contributions, all three independent yet intertwined. As the piece builds through subtle micro-changes, the interaction of their instruments creates layers of harmonics and washes of sound that unravel in the most mesmerising fashion whilst communicating a fierce energy and warmth. The Necks are, simply, at the top of their game. PRESENTED BY QPAC

NOISES OFF 3 – 25 June | Playhouse 3 hours (incl interval) What’s more fun than a comically flawless story about tragically flawed people? Nothing. A clumsy brunette bombshell; an addled actress as the dotty housekeeper; an alcoholic septuagenarian in the role of a burglar. It was never going to be easy staging a bedroom farce with a mediocre cast, but pompous director Lloyd Dallas is having a crack. You’ll cry with laughter and cringe with delight as you witness this company fray and fall apart. Onstage, it’s a whirl of slamming doors, missed cues, dropped lines and dropped trousers;

backstage, it’s an even more confused and chaotic maelstrom of love triangles and trampled egos, and there’s no one without an axe to grind (or swing). Playwright Michael Frayn’s classic meta-farce has been running all over the world since its 1982 premiere. Now, Queensland Theatre’s Artistic Director Sam Strong masterfully marshals an ensemble of the country’s top comics, including Simon Burke, for a wickedly funny night. 1984 BY GEORGE ORWELL 14 – 18 June | Lyric Theatre 1 hour and 40 minutes (no interval) A new adaptation created by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan.

April, 1984. 13:00. Comrade 6079, Winston Smith, thinks a thought, starts a diary and falls in love. But Big Brother is always watching.

An exploration of surveillance and identity, 1984 presented a vision of the future that looks a lot like our present. Orwell’s fiction has become our reality. Described as “masterfully constructed and chillingly frank” (Limelight Magazine), this stage adaptation is a dynamic, political, technology-enhanced dive into Orwell’s complex vision.

Published in 1949, George Orwell’s book helped define the 20th century. Now, 1984 is re-examined in this radical, award-winning international theatrical blockbuster seen by more than a quarter of a million people.

Produced by British theatre innovators Headlong, along with Nottingham Playhouse and Almeida Theatre, this production’s success has led to multiple seasons on the West End and numerous international festival appearances.

Orwell’s dystopian future is now.

As in every man’s

story, he had a family (albeit a royal one), friends, fell in love, went through self-discovery, and sought answers to his many questions. Ultimately, however, it led him on an unexpected path. 25 June | Concert Hall Duration will be confirmed at qpac.com.au

Australian stars Tom Burlinson and Melinda Schneider accompanied by the Young at Heart Orchestra will join forces this June, performing a concert celebration of the iconic hits of Frank Sinatra and Doris Day.

This powerfully evocative concert will illustrate how different composers chose to reflect on night time through music.

SWEET NIGHT MUSIC

Young At Heart is inspired by the hugely successful collaboration of two of Hollywood’s biggest stars who took the world by storm in 1955 with the box office hit movie, Young At Heart, and a top selling soundtrack album of the same name. Audiences can look forward to hearing Tom presenting some of the all-time Sinatra greats, Melinda delivering the hits of Doris Day and the two of them coming together for a selection of breathtaking duets. Reminisce with such memorable tunes as Secret Love, New York New York, Que Sera Sera, Come Fly With Me, Shakin’ The Blues, Mack The Knife, Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps and of course, Young At Heart.

Join the Orchestra and jovial host Guy Noble, as we take a nocturnal stroll through music of the night, including the arias of Mozart’s famous (and furious) Queen of the Night, excerpts from Sondheim’s playful musical A Little Night Music, Dvoˇrák’s quiet Nocturne and Debussy’s masterwork with French colours of the night. Wayne McGregor’s award-winning ballet Woolf Works is inspired by three of Virginia Woolf’s landmark novels: Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves, with each of the three acts presented as a series of multi-sensory collages. THE WINTER’S TALE 5 – 9 July | Lyric Theatre 2 hours and 52 minutes (incl 2 intervals)

Christopher Wheeldon, Artistic Associate of The Royal Ballet, created his adaptation of Shakespeare’s late great romance The Winter’s Tale for The Royal Ballet in 2014. This full-length story ballet follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet, through remorse and regret – and after a statue of Hermione appears to come miraculously to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful of Mozart’s masses, this work is a particular joy for the soprano voice.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra Music Director Alondra de la Parra leads an adventure through the Americas, with a Cuban portrait, an evocative Caribbean ritual chant, a trip to the Grand Canyon and a vibrant Mexican dance.

Unusually this was not a commission for Mozart, who was a ‘jobbing’ composer; it was written for his own musical pleasure, and begun, in part, as a celebration of his marriage to Constanze who was one of the soloists in an early performance. The wit and brilliance of Beethoven’s first symphony, peppered with classic Beethovian gestures, complements an evening that will be indeed, great.
