Welcome
Welcome to QPAC. 2018 has been a huge year for QPAC…and there’s more to come yet! Our annual performance program comprises more than 1200 performances and welcomes people from all over Queensland, and beyond, to experience the best in live performance from local, national and international artists and companies. Each day at QPAC brings something inspiring, entertaining, uplifting and exciting – musicals, concerts, comedians, drama, opera, ballet, QPAC is a destination for live performance and a loved cultural icon of Queensland.
This November, the QPAC International Series welcomes Italy’s Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company to Australia for the very first time in that company’s 240 year history. This momentous event from 7 to 18 November will be a citywide celebration of Italian arts and culture. Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company perform two much loved ballets – Rudolf Nureyev’s Don Quixote and the hauntingly beautiful Giselle. As with previous QPAC International Series presentations, what happens on stage is only one part of the spectacle. Discover our full QPAC International Series program of events and insights and be inspired to participate and find out more. Earlier this year the Premier announced funding for a new theatre to be built at QPAC by 2022. We are excited and energised by this news and are already hard at work planning for a new theatre and the ways in which a new theatre will help us to connect and engage with new audiences and artists. I hope you enjoy browsing the pages of this publication and look forward to welcoming you to QPAC soon.

BEETHOVEN’S 7TH SYMPHONY
2 September | Concert Hall 2 hours and 10 minutes (incl interval)
6 September | Concert Hall 1 hour and 30 minutes (incl interval)
Music and poetry meet at Voices of Birralee’s Poppies & Poems to unite the community in First World War commemoration.
Under the baton of Music Director Alondra de la Parra, this concert opens with Prokofiev’s first symphony. Its nickname, the Classical, originates from the work’s small instrumentation and stylistic inspiration from Haydn’s music. One of Beethoven’s best received works, his seventh Symphony, has enchanted audiences ever since its first performance. Full of rhythmical wit and energetic dance-like sections, it also includes the famous Allegretto, which was featured to accompany The King’s Speech by King George VI as played by Colin Firth. The world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin’s Piano Concerto No.3 brings back this much loved composer with Australian piano star Tamara-Anna Cislowska.
The concert will celebrate the beautiful poetry from WW1 and pieces written thereafter, which have helped frame the commemoration of this significant time in Australia and the world’s history. Featuring Voices of Birralee’s six choirs and a seventh, adult community choir, Birralee Recycled, Poppies & Poems will explore a variety of choral music, including two exciting premieres composed by Paul Jarman and Katherine Ruhle, along with a rousing massed finale involving more than 450 choristers. As part of the project, Voices of Birralee invites members of the community to submit their WW1 ancestor to be included in an online Roll of Honour and in the concert’s program. MEMORIAL
HAMNET
7 – 9 September | Playhouse 1 hour and 45 minutes (no interval)
8 – 12 September | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour (no interval)
Out of the darkness, a vast field of bodies emerges. At the centre, a woman stands as storyteller; the voice and heart of a god, the elements, time itself, and of a thousand lives caught in war.
William Shakespeare had one son. He named him Hamnet. Shakespeare then left home to pursue his career in the theatre, effectively abandoning his family. In 1596, he was told that the boy – who was then eleven years old – was seriously ill. By the time Shakespeare returned home, Hamnet had died. In 1599, Shakespeare wrote a play called Hamlet.
Alice Oswald’s Memorial is an exquisite elegy for each of the 215 dead soldiers named in Homer’s Iliad. In this richly layered, epic theatrical experience, the legendary Helen Morse brings impassioned life to Oswald’s words inside an other-worldly score by Golden Globe nominee Jocelyn Pook (Eyes Wide Shut), performed by an extraordinary ensemble of Shut international musicians. All the while, a 215 strong community chorus moves as a haunting and uplifting presence across the stage, which evolves from battlefield to meadow to starlit sky. Hamnet is too young to understand Shakespeare. And he is one letter away from being a great man. We are too old to understand Hamnet. We meet in the middle, in a theatre. From the makers of the multi award winning productions LIPPY and Chekhov’s First Play (both seen at Brisbane Festival in 2016), Hamnet is a solo work for an 11 year old boy. Using live video and dead video, Dead Centre attempts to bridge the gap between two generations. PRESENTED BY BRISBANE FESTIVAL AND QPAC

Multi platinum selling and five time ARIA Award winning singer/songwriter Katie Noonan returns to Brisbane Festival with Australia’s ‘poet laureate’ Michael Leunig and her ARIA Award winning jazz trio Elixir, featuring Zac Hurren and Stephen Magnusson. Katie, Michael and the band are joined by Camerata – Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra – under the baton of Iain Grandage.
On an empty stage, a house is conjured from nothing. You watch it fill room by room as generations of inhabitants move in, grow up, get old, argue, do laundry, fall in love, work and party.
The concert features the new Gratitude and Grief collaboration between Elixir and Leunig, showcasing a unique combination of spoken word poetry, angelic vocals, sublime improvisation, and live drawing by Leunig himself. PRESENTED BY BRISBANE FESTIVAL AND GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY

STALIN’S PIANO
SYMPHONY FOR ME
14 September | Cremorne Theatre 65 minutes (no interval)
15 September | Concert Hall 2 hours (incl interval)
A composer, a piano, a virtuoso, historical footage, and a wildly chilling – at times very funny – meeting of Joseph Stalin, Ai Wei Wei, Bertolt Brecht, Joseph Goebbels, John F. Kennedy, Maria Yudina, Gough Whitlam, Jackson Pollock, Robert Helpmann, Julia Gillard, Donald Trump, and more.
Many people have a favourite piece of orchestral music, even if they don’t think of themselves as a classical music fan. Maybe they know only one piece; something heard as a child, known from a film or linked with a big life event. This is music that occupies a special place.
In 1953, Stalin died in his bed. Found spinning on his record player was Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.23, a recording of the often banned and exiled Russian pianist Maria Yudina. An outspoken champion of new music and artistic freedom, Yudina was famed for her vehement defiance of Stalin’s tyranny. While many of her fellow artists ‘disappeared’, or were purged by the KGB, Yudina outlasted Stalin and lived to tell her story.
Brisbane Festival will select pieces of music suggested by members of the public. On the night, these members of the public will be special guests of the Festival, being invited onto the stage to share the personal significance of the work they’ve chosen and then, on stage, next to the conductor, they will witness the full force and beauty of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra playing their selected piece.
Join the equally fearless and fierce pianist Sonya Lifschitz as she fires up Brisbane composer Robert Davidson’s electrifying new work, Stalin’s Piano. PRESENTED BY BRISBANE FESTIVAL AND GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY
This free concert uncovers extraordinary stories in an unforgettable evening of musical delights. In 2015, the concert reached audience capacity in 27 minutes. In 2016, it took 17 minutes. EN MASSE
PETER GRIMES
19 – 22 September | Playhouse 1 hour and 55 minutes (incl interval)
20 & 22 September | Concert Hall 3 hours (incl interval)
A wild, tender and savage ride, En Masse presents two visions of humanity at its extremes through circus settings of Schubert’s Winter’s Journey and Swan Song as well as Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.
Brisbane Festival has assembled an exemplary international team to mount two exclusive, semistaged concerts of Benjamin Britten’s supreme opera starring Stuart Skelton.
Glitches and grooves from sound artist Klara Lewis are interspersed with Schubert’s exquisite songs of loss and love as leading English tenor Rob Murray and acrobats from Circa’s legendary ensemble veer between anarchic energy and exquisite loss.
Peter Grimes is the defining British opera of the 20th century and features Britten’s most evocative sea-inspired music, including the Four Sea Interludes. It paints a vivid picture of a small community convulsed by rumour and mob rule. It is opera for our times. It is an opera to get the blood rushing.
Then Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, with its ecstatic tribal energy, is played live by acclaimed pianists Tamara-Anna Cislowska and Michael Kieran Harvey while acrobats are pitted in a life and death struggle between group and victim. PRESENTED BY BRISBANE FESTIVAL AND QPAC

If every piece of music is like an act in a play, then together these three pieces of music create a work that is Shakespearean in its depth and scope. It’s hard to believe that Mendelssohn wrote A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the tender age of 17, as incidental music to Shakespeare’s play. It boasts striking effects, with different instruments and passages used to conjure people and places – including a braying ass in the strings. Bruch’s Concerto, meanwhile, is fiery and demanding; it scales the highest and lowest reaches and surprises the listener with sudden melodic leaps and pace changes. Which leaves us with Walton’s Symphony in finale – herculean in its grandeur and surging intensity, it screams, despairs and finally roars.

Wagner’s Die Meistersinger features the 16th century Meistersinger (Master Singers) guild, an association of amateur artists who are master craftsmen. BILL BAILEY EARL OF WHIMSY
ELAINE PAIGE
16 – 18 October | Concert Hall 2 hours (incl interval)
19 October | Concert Hall 2 hours and 5 minutes (incl interval)
After the 2016 sell out tour, Larks in Transit, the UK’s very own straggle haired polymath, Bill Bailey, returns to Australia with his new comedy and music extravaganza, Earl of Whimsy.
Britain’s first lady of musical theatre Elaine Paige performs songs from her illustrious career alongside an array of her favourite tracks by contemporary songwriters.
It has Bill’s trademark blend of satire and surrealism, stories and dismantled jokes, crowd sing-alongs, weird instruments and musical showstoppers. But there’s a distinctly historical feel to this show. With its tales of Britain’s fortunes past and present, of ancient Viking battles, of Shakespeare’s contribution to comedy, and Bill’s own ancestry, this is both a mockery and a celebration of national identity.
This follows on from the huge success of Elaine’s last series of concerts in the UK in 2016 and 2017, which had audiences and critics alike rising to their feet in praise.
PRESENTED BY ADRIAN BOHM
Elaine has performed live in concert all over the world and as a recording artist has worked with legendary producers such as Tony Visconti, Dennis Lambert, Peter Matz and Phil Ramone amongst others and has released 22 solo albums (four multi Platinum and nine Gold), been featured on seven cast recordings and has had major worldwide hits with songs such as Memory (Cats) and I Know Him So Well (Chess). he roars towards his ultimate destruction, wreaking havoc in the lives of everyone he encounters.
The genius of Mozart, for too long overdue in Opera Queensland’s repertoire, returns with his epic and timeless masterpiece Don Giovanni, conducted by Johannes Fritzsch.
In Lindy Hume’s bold, visually arresting new staging, the aristocratic Don Giovanni is a seductive sociopath, cajoling, funny and charming, yet dangerous and destructive. Giovanni’s descent into hell is one of theatre’s most spectacular scenes, but no work of Mozart’s is one dimensional, so be prepared to experience a kaleidoscope of emotions across the sweep of one of opera’s most exhilarating scores.
British/Australian bass baritone and rising international star Duncan Rock, makes his Australian principal debut in the title role of this striking new production of one of Mozart’s best works. As heir to the Russian tradition, Nureyev’s influence is undeniable, from the rigorous symmetry of the ‘white’ act to the now infamous final grand pas de deux. Set to Ludwig Minkus’ colourful score, performed live by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Don Quixote promises an unforgettable ballet experience boasting one show stopping performance after another. A tale of unrequited love, betrayal and redemption, Giselle is the story of an innocent peasant girl who dies of a broken heart upon learning her beloved Albrecht is engaged to someone else. Resurrected in the afterlife by the vengeful Wili maidens, Giselle must perform the ultimate act of forgiveness to prevent Albrecht falling prey to their irresistible dance.
Featuring the original Coralli-Perrot choreography in this revival by Yvette Chauviré, this production of Giselle is one of La Scala Ballet’s most popular in recent seasons and international tours. La Scala Ballet Company pays homage to the late Chauviré: in her version of Giselle, performed at La Scala for the first time in 1950, Chauviré herself starred as the ill fated peasant girl. Lilli Paasikivi returns to Queensland Symphony Orchestra from her native Finland to sing this vocally-infused work. Previously, she sang in Das Lied von der Erde and the Rückert Lieder to great acclaim. Lilli Paasikivi is a supreme storyteller. Her voice is not only beautiful but an ideal match for Mahler’s magnificent works. Get ready to be amazed! THE QUEENSLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA MUSIC DIRECTOR IS PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY TIM FAIRFAX AC.

AN EVENING WITH THE CHURCH 25 November | Concert Hall 2 hours and 20 minutes (incl interval) To mark the 30th Anniversary of their seminal album Starfish, please join us for An Evening with THE CHURCH. Starfish will be performed in its entirety, along with other gems from the band’s incredible 38 year career. But this is not just a nostalgia trip: The Church have been revitalised since 2014 by Brisbane’s own Ian Haug, formerly of another iconic Australian band, Powderfinger.
Starfish remains best known for its iconic single Under The Milky Way. But like all classic albums, it’s a journey that remains an endless sea of possibilities. It’s time for the band to celebrate one of their crowning glories. PRESENTED BY FRONTIER TOURING & TRIPLE M

ÓLAFUR ARNALDS 27 November | Concert Hall 1 hour and 30 minutes (no interval) Icelandic musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Ólafur Arnalds performs for the very first time at QPAC in a special concert event. By mixing strings and piano with loops and edgy beats, Arnalds fuses electronica, ambient and pop for a markedly unique sound. Playing songs from his upcoming album re:member and his extensive back catalogue, Arnalds’ live show is set to break all the rules. But Arnalds’ journey has not been the typical path for classical composers – beginning his music career instead as a drummer for metal bands. In 2004,
62
he was asked to write instrumentals for the album of metal band, Heaven Shall Burn. This led to more work in the field of neo-classical strings and piano based music, and ultimately the release of his debut album Eulogy for Evolution in 2007. He has since written eight albums, contributed to internationally acclaimed TV and film soundtracks (from TV series Broadchurch to Hollywood films Taken 3 and The Hunger Games) and composed and played in many musicals, from styles of prog-rock to electro-pop and classical minimalism. NORTH BY NORTHWEST 27 November – 9 December | Lyric Theatre Duration to be confirmed at qpac.com.au The magic of film and theatre combine in this incredible production. Don’t miss Alfred Hitchcock’s supreme comedy of suspense live on stage!
When they don’t believe him, that’s infuriating. When they try to kill him, that’s frightening. And when they pin murder on him, that’s time to run!
Every twist, every thrill, every hairbreadth escape from Hitchcock’s original genius work is retained for this stunning new stage adaptation from director Simon Phillips and adapted for the stage by Carolyn Burns.
From New York to North Dakota, Thornhill is chased by spies, Feds, crop-dusting planes and the inevitable cool blonde. North by Northwest is a lightening paced thriller that mixes glamour with espionage for a truly irresistible cocktail.
Roger O. Thornhill is a suave and successful advertising executive, abducted by thugs who insist he is a man called George Kaplan. Chaos ensues.
