Welcome

Welcome to QPAC. The cooler months are upon us and this season our building is alive with much to see and do. The Out of the Box Festival for children aged eight years and under returns to QPAC in June. Since 1992, Out of the Box has been entertaining and educating kids through a variety of arts experiences, and encouraging them to find their voice and explore the world around them. Two productions within the Festival – Air Play and The Arrival – will enjoy an extended season giving more people the chance to experience these remarkable shows.

Hit musical Aladdin finishes an incredible season at the Lyric Theatre in June, and from July, audiences will get to know the life and music of Carole King with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical in its first Brisbane appearance. Those drawn to drama may be interested in internationally renowned play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, which will show in the Concert Hall (converted to theatre mode). There’s also Noni Hazlehurst’s Brisbane theatre debut with the critically acclaimed Mother in the Cremorne Theatre. Home and local companies will be seen and celebrated across QPAC, as well as national companies including Bangarra Dance Theatre with a new work, Dark Emu. And the next edition of our bi-annual Story magazine will be available from July. With so much to see and do at QPAC this season, I hope you enjoy browsing the pages of this publication and look forward to welcoming you to QPAC soon.

DOUBLE BILL: CARMEN & THE FIREBIRD Until 3 June | Playhouse 2 hours and 15 minutes (incl interval) A fiery and dramatic double bill choreographed by two of ballet’s best. Carlos Acosta, former Principal of The Royal Ballet and one of the most acclaimed dancers in the world, has distilled the famous operatic story, Carmen, into a powerful, theatrical ballet – a tour-de-force of raw, honest characters and thrilling dance. Bizet’s electrifying music underscores a tale of passion and betrayal. Don José is hopelessly smitten by the free-spirited and sensual Carmen, but when she discards him for a dashing matador, his ardour turns to jealous rage.

10

Famed choreographer Liam Scarlett brings his hallmark musicality and finely-crafted choreography to the iconic 20th century ballet, The Firebird. While paying homage to the ground-breaking original, Scarlett asserts its modern relevance with an unconventional twist to the powerful narrative. Prince Ivan calls upon the magical Firebird to help him do battle with Immortal Kostcheï, whose evil soul is protected within an enchanted egg. In this mythical, dark tale, a mighty battle of wills and a burning love ignite the drama. PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND BALLET

THE LONGEST MINUTE Until 23 June | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour and 30 minutes (no interval) WRITTEN BY ROBERT KRONK AND NADINE MCDONALD-DOWD DIRECTED BY BRIDGET BOYLE

Where were you the night of the 2015 NRL Grand Final? The night when long-time underdogs the North Queensland Cowboys won in an all-QLD nail-biter that changed the game, and the state, forever. For one family of Cowboys diehards, their whole lives have led up to this moment. Jess was born on the night of the North Queensland Cowboys’ first game in Townsville. Daughter of Foley Shield legend Frank ‘Black Flash’ Wright, she grew up as a footy fanatic with big dreams, silky skills and boundless ambition to play. But as a girl

in a male-dominated sport, she faces more than her fair share of knockbacks, just like the luckless Cowboys. Despite their relentless string of losses, Jess still dares to believe in her team, and herself. Queensland Theatre joins forces with debase productions and JUTE Theatre Company in Cairns to bring this iconically Queensland story to audiences across the state. MADELEINE PEYROUX 7 June | Concert Hall 2 hours Vocalist Madeleine Peyroux is an acclaimed performer with a dusky, lyrical style and a bent toward covering jazz and blues standards along with her own folky originals. Bursting on to the international scene in the 90s, Peyroux drew favourable comparisons to legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday. While her intimate sound certainly owes a debt to Holiday, Peyroux has carved out her own distinctive stylistic niche, balancing a modern pop sensibility with a respect for older vocal traditions.

In her live performances, Peyroux adds a further dimension to already powerful vocals with The New York Times writing “she emits a heady aura of places lived and music absorbed that floats around her like a ghostly multiple exposure of faces and voices from the past”. TIMELESS ODYSSEYS MYSTICAL AND MAJESTIC 8 & 9 June | Concert Hall Duration will be confirmed at qpac.com.au Taken from Wagner’s opera, Parsifal, about Arthurian knight Parsifal’s quest for the Holy Grail, Good Friday Spell is inspirational as musically it tries to evoke a karmic instance of renewal. Prokofiev’s Concerto No.2, meanwhile, is a true heart racer spiked with folksy tunes and lightning rushes up and down the piano keys. With Russian pianist Denis Kozhukhin at the helm, this work remains one of the most technically formidable piano concertos in the standard repertoire.

16

Strauss’ brass-fuelled Also sprach Zarathustra rounds out the trio and is – of course – instantly recognisable as the Sunrise theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Holy grails, heart racers and hits – what more could you ask for? *WAGNER’S

THE MERRY WIDOW 22 – 30 June | Lyric Theatre 2 hours and 40 minutes (incl interval) The Merry Widow is a delicious confection: a light-hearted look at love amid the champagne and glitter of Art Deco France. Ladies sweep into ballrooms in silk fishtail gowns, and dapper gents in suits and patent leather shoes kiss your hand and fill up your dance card. Two of the country’s most popular and charismatic performers, David Hobson and Natalie Christie Peluso, return as perfectly paired lovers Hanna and Count Danilo, in Graeme Murphy’s spectacular new production of Franz Lehár’s ever popular musical. Natalie Christie Peluso plays the beguiling widow, an inadvertent heiress of a city’s fortune after just eight days of marriage. Fearing the loss of their riches, the society set are determined that she must wed a local, and soon, before any foreigner catches her gaze. But she’s got a history with the man they’ve got in mind, and to complicate matters, the widow isn’t the only one turning heads. There’s plenty of love to go around in this story of amorous encounters and elegant romance. PRESENTED BY OPERA QUEENSLAND

26 June – 1 July | Studio 1 55 minutes (no interval)

Duck is yellow and raggedy, smells like a blanket, feels soft and woolly, and can do nothing without his hero, and his best friend. Everything is rosy, until one day Duck goes missing...

Shadow puppets in space! Two brothers embark on an epic quest to find a new home planet.

Duck is a simple yet heartfelt story of friendship and love showing us that we need others as much as they need us. Through movement and live music, follow the story of a boy and his best friend as they spend every waking hour together – soaring through the air, building skyscrapers up! up! up! (and seeing them topple to the ground) – before Duck mysteriously goes missing. When the boy ventures to search for him without any luck, we’re left wondering, will Duck ever be found again? Duck is a truly beautiful story to share with those you love. Children will giggle and gasp and parents will be taken back to their childhood once again. This world premiere adaptation of Janet A. Holmes’ touching book, illustrated by Jonathon Bentley, is about the beloved things in our lives, and who we are without them.

This is the tale of Sam and Junior. Two brothers, who must flee their barren planet, and embark on an epic quest across the galaxy. Using the contents of your cleaning cupboard, Bunk Puppets’ David Geddes conjures up astonishing lo-fi theatrical wizardry using only old boxes, bubble wrap, drinking straws, tennis balls, ping pong bats and old toys. It’s a crazy shadow puppet universe, made from bits of rubbish. Award-winning Bunk Puppets, creators of Swamp Juice and Sticks Stones Broken Bones, present this new, delicious, DIY theatre event. Forget what you think you know about shadow puppets, buckle-in and tear open your imagination for an epic journey with two brothers as they battle the bad guys, and find strength in each other at warp speed. emphasising the isolating experience everyone feels when arriving in a strange, new place. The beautifully illustrated work is accurately brought to life on stage through breathtaking sets, whimsical puppets and props, as well as a remarkable soundscape.

There he negotiates dazzling architecture, bizarre foods and foreign tongues to build a new life. On his travels, the man meets fellow sympathetic strangers, each with their own tales to tell. Tan’s wordless novel lends itself perfectly to the use of puppetry and physical theatre to tell a story, 34

The critically-acclaimed production has delighted audiences throughout the UK and Europe for 18 years, from the Royal Albert Hall to the Cunard liners, and now heads to Australia for the first time. Starring Andy Reiss, (Jean Valjean), David Fawcett (Jean Valjean), Katie Leeming (Eponine) and Poppy Tierney (Cosette).

John Wood, Max Gillies and Benita Collings are having some Senior Moments with Geoff Harvey on piano in this somewhat silly show for otherwise sensible seniors. With hilarious comedy sketches and brilliantly witty songs, Senior Moments is a comedy revue with fun and laughs and performers who are old enough to know better, all making merry fun of the trials and tribulations of growing old disgracefully Senior Moments. A seriously funny revue for slightly ‘old’ people. (That’s you. Be honest.) PRESENTED BY RETURN FIRE PRODUCTIONS

GOOD MUSLIM BOY 12 July – 4 August | Cremorne Theatre 1 hour and 30 minutes (no interval) What does it mean to be a good Muslim boy? You probably shouldn’t gawk at girls in bikinis or fake a medical degree. If you must be an actor, you shouldn’t play a gay man on television, or Saddam Hussein in a post 9/11 American musical. And you definitely, definitely shouldn’t leave an arranged bride at the altar. Meet Osamah Sami. He’s done all of the above. Interesting, considering his father is one of the leading Islamic clerics in Australia, having pulled his family out of war-torn Iran to settle in suburban Melbourne. But when his kindly and unorthodox dad dies suddenly during a trip to Iran, Osamah must grapple with an inscrutable and corrupt

bureaucracy in his fight to bring his father’s body home to Australia – all the while looking back on his life in a haunting, hilarious and heart-wrenching retrospective. Osamah Sami’s memoir Good Muslim Boy, upon which the play is based, won a 2016 New South Wales Premier’s Literary Award. PRESENTED BY QUEENSLAND THEATRE AND MALTHOUSE THEATRE

BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL From 13 July | Lyric Theatre 2 hours and 35 minutes (inc interval) Her voice inspired millions. Now discover her story. Broadway Sensation, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical is coming to QPAC this July. Critics have hailed Beautiful as ‘sensationally entertaining’ (3AW) with ‘one hell of a song catalogue’ (The Age). It features hit songs from one of the great song writing eras, including Natural Woman, I Feel The Earth Move, You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling, You’ve Got A Friend, Will You Love Me Tomorrow and Locomotion. Beautiful tells the inspirational true story of Carole King’s remarkable rise from teenage songwriter to global superstar; from her relationship with husband and song-writing partner Gerry Goffin, their close friendship and playful rivalry with fellow song writing duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, to her remarkable rise to stardom. She fought her way into the record industry as a teenager and sold her first hit, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, when she was just 17. By the time she was 20, she was writing number ones for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll, including The Drifters, The Shirelles, Aretha Franklin and The Monkees. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her own voice and step into the spotlight to become one of the most successful solo artists in pop music history. The magical sounds of The Everly Brothers and Del Shannon come alive with Australia’s very own multi award winning vocal harmony duo and internationally renowned The Robertson Brothers and dynamic performer Jeff Fallon.

Del Shannon’s 1960s hits Black is Black, Little Town Flirt, Runaway and Keep Searching (Follow the Sun) will have you dancing in the aisles! PRESENTED BY BEN MAIORANA ENTERTAINMENT

Tchaikovsky’s recognition of the Serbian people, Marche Slave, kicks off the proceedings and this tuneful opener will immediately be familiar to fans of Disney’s Aladdin, whose score borrowed heavily from the piece. Pianist Stephen Hough then performs Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, comparing the theme to a ‘crisp white shirt’ in its infinite adaptability. Then, prepare for tears as Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10 chronicles Stalin’s brutality. The third movement, believed to be a Stalin snapshot, is a chilling distorted march, while the slow-paced Finale’s bleak spaciousness reveals the Gulag prisoners’ despair. Singer, songwriter, painter, poet, activist and voice of a generation, Joni Mitchell is an essential part of the soundtrack to the twentieth century.

It’s one of the most successful Beatles events ever staged in Australia. After sold out tours in 2009 and 2014, Chris Cheney (The Living End), Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon), Tim Rogers (You Am I), and ARIA Award-winning solo artist Josh Pyke are reuniting for a 2018 tour in a nod to the 50th anniversary of this very special album.

In Both Sides Now, five unique Australian voices come together to express just how much this songwriting legend means to them – Kate Miller-Heidke, Ella Hooper, Wendy Matthews, Kristin Berardi and Rachel Gaudry are backed by an outstanding 12 piece band. Audiences can look forward to all those unforgettable songs – Both Sides Now, Blue, Woodstock, Circle Game and A Case Of You – songs that have become part of our lives. Miroslav Petkov, Principal Trumpet of the elite world orchestra, The Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam joins Southern Cross Soloists in a thrilling program of brilliance and flair.

Professional musicians are unique in that their work is often also their life’s passion. So when they get together to have fun, make music and create something special, you really don’t want to miss it.

Described as having ‘the eloquence of a great storyteller’ by the New York papers, Miroslav is one of the most dynamic trumpet soloists of today.

World-renowned pianist and frequent Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) guest Steven Osborne joins ACO Artistic Director Richard Tognetti and ACO Principal Cello Timo-Veikko Valve for a warm and intimate program of Dvořák and Brahms piano trios. Bohemian composer Antonín Dvořák’s Dumky Trio for piano, violin and cello is one of his most original and folkiest. In contrast Brahms’ trio is vast, herculean, and something of a musical juggernaut. (If you’re a movie lover, you might even hear the odd motif reappearing in the soundtrack of ET: The Extra Terrestrial.) A heartwarming homage to two beloved composers.

SOUTHERN CROSS SOLOISTS

Beginning with the precipitous virtuosity of the piccolo trumpet in Bach’s second Brandenburg concerto, the Soloists take you on a journey of emotion through Copland’s melancholic Quiet City, and Prokofiev’s passionate Romeo and Juliet suites. Bulgarian composer Georgii Cherkin’s footstamping Sevdana and Bulgarian Dance will lead into our tribute to the great Leonard Bernstein’s 100th anniversary, with Hindson’s Homage to Bernstein, and Bernstein’s own West Side Story. Keep calm and carry on!

Find yourself resting somewhere between a relaxed, smoky, honky tonk jazz piano bar and the ethereal American prairies that much of Copland’s music evokes in his Clarinet Concerto – the centrepiece of this concert. Commissioned by the “King of Swing”, legendary jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman, the work is infused with the spirit of Brazilian folk music that Copland heard when he was travelling in Latin America while writing it. The internationally acclaimed UK clarinet soloist Julian Bliss joins Camerata for this inspired work. Opening the concert is Beethoven’s Serioso Quartet – punchy yet packed with the excitement and drama that has come to be associated with this composer. Paquito’s sublime tango-flavoured work will be followed by Camerata’s passionate string sound in Mahler’s exquisite Adagietto – heart-wrenching, dramatic and tender all in one.
