SUMMER SPORTS CLINICS Summer Sports Clinics Join us for an exciting summer of sports clinics that include basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, and flag football. Coaches will teach basic skills and fundamentals while participants learn the rules of the game and experience new drills to take their game to the next level. YOUTH CLASSES

School Safety Awareness Children will learn how to communicate and defend themselves in real-life situations involving stranger abduction and bully intimidation. Both escape techniques and communication skills will be taught so students can defend themselves against being grabbed and learn to diffuse problems vocally. Safety information will be discussed each week. This program focuses on Safety Awareness, Self-Defense, Discipline, Respect, and Self-Confidence. Sew Into It Lessons – Creative Camp Kids will explore creativity and innovation through fashion and clothing. Campers will learn how to ice dye accessories, upcycle and redesign clothing, make a no-sew backpack, share their creative ideas with an inspiration board, and learn essential life skills with hand sewing. They will also learn practical ways to use their creativity to make a positive difference around them. Creative Camp’s instructor is the owner of Sew Into It and Apparel and Design Merchandising Graduate student at CSU Northridge. Campers will need to bring a snack or lunch and a bottle of water. Hawthorne Hammerheads is a year-round swim team. It will foster the concepts of team and team building. Members are required to have passed the "youth swimmers" class level to participate or after an assessment consisting of four laps (100 yards) freestyle, and four laps (100 yards) of backstroke and two laps (50 yards) of breaststroke. Must have prior approval by Hawthorne Pool staff from the assessment OR a class completion certificate from our summer program. One Friday per month, both teams will have friendly race competitions, relays and play water games.

The Place Where Fun Begins! Hawthorne Senior Center

The Hawthorne Senior Center is located directly behind the Hawthorne Memorial Center at 3901 El Segundo Boulevard, Hawthorne. Parking in the rear. Entrance on Prairie Avenue. (310) 349-1650 Hours of operation are Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Hawthorne Senior Center’s Special Events Date: May 17, 2022 Fee: $5 Location: Getty Museum Bus will leave Senior Center at 9:00 am and return at 3:00 - 3:30 pm.

Tai Chi Classes start Friday, April 22, 2022 at 10:00 am. Classes will take place every Friday at 10:00 am and will be held both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting). Face masks will be not be required when class is held outdoors. Class Instructions: Wear comfortable clothing, tennis shoes, and bring a bottle of water. Note: All participants are required to complete an emergency form.

Please call (310) 349-1650 Monday – Friday, starting Wednesday, April 6, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm to sign up and schedule a time to come in to pay (Consent Form and Proof of Vaccination or Negative Test within 72 hours of trip required). SENIOR PROGRAMS Senior Center Offerings ■B illiard Room

The billiard room is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, to a limited number of seniors at a time. Must call the Senior Center to register and make reservations to play 55 minute increments thorough out the week.

■C omputer Room

The Computer room is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, to a limited number of seniors at a time. Must call the Senior Center to register and make reservations to use computer in 55 minute increments throughout the week.

■L unch Program The lunch program is provided by

the Torrance YMCA each Wednesday serving 5 frozen meals, fruit and milk from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Seniors please call Torrance YMCA at (310)602-4905 to sign up. The meals are distributed by drive–through at the Hawthorne Senior Center from the parking lot. Seniors must be on the list in order to receive lunches each Wednesday.

GIVE A HELPING HAND! When the senior center reopens, we will need your support! The Hawthorne Senior Center is run by a very small staff and a handful of volunteers. If you would like to give back to your community and feel you have an interest in working with seniors, please

3. REGISTER WITH INSTRUCTOR You register the first day of class with the instructor unless noted. You must fill out a registration form for each activity the first day of class.

Payment § Only cash, checks, or money orders are accepted. § Checks are to be made payable to the City of Hawthorne, and must have a drivers license number written on check. § VISA & MasterCard are accepted for preregistration activities only (ie. Dog Obedience, Special Events, Clinics, etc) § Insufficient checks will be charged a $25.00 processing fee.

Refund Policy § A non-refundable 15% administrative fee per class or sports league will be assessed by the recreation department for any patron granted a refund, change or transfer per class or sports league registration. § No full refund will be issued unless a class or league is cancelled by the recreation department. § If a refund is necessary for to a medical emergency, please visit the Community Services Department M-Th between the hours of 7:30 am – 5:30 pm and fill out a refund request form and attached a copy of the medical release provided by your physician. § Refunds or exchanges for classes due to summer school, vacations, etc are not granted. Please be sure to register for the correct time and level when signing up for classes.

Park Permits & Fees Groups of 15 or more that wish to use a Hawthorne Park, must have a permit. Please be prepared to give the date and time of the activity, the portion of the park to be used, and the number of people in attendance. Please note that rented amusements, (i.e. bouncers, trains, trampolines, amplified music, etc.) are NOT permitted at any of the parks. Requests has to be at least 20 days before the day of event. Formal Picnic Areas: Memorial Park, Eucalyptus Park and Holly Park have formal picnic shelters. Memorial Park and Eucalyptus Park have outlets, gas grills, sinks, and counter tops. There are no outlets or sinks at Holly Park. When booking the park, you must request usage of the covered shelter areas and check out a key. The fee is an additional $19 - $31 for use of the formal picnic area.

Park Programs 2022

The parks are staffed:

Tuesday - Saturday 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Starting June 21 st - August 13 th Take part in recreational games, team sports, all while making new friends! Recreation leaders provide kids with safe and fun park activities. Park Programs are a drop in program only. Participants are free to come and go as they please. All children 7 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Check in at the ballrooms to meet your Hawthorne staff!
