We would like to thank our many wonderful advertisers and readers who use the Q Pages, Utah’s directory of gay- and lesbian-friendly businesses. Now, more than ever, it is important that we know our hard-earned dollars are supporting those businesses who support us. Many of these businesses are gay owned and operated, and many are not. They all, however, welcome you as a client or customer. In this, one of the reddest of red states, one cannot assume that to always be the case. For those new to the area, visiting, or perhaps just newly out, here is some info about our pretty, great state.

Utah’s Gay Community According to a recent Gallup poll, Salt Lake City is the seventh-most LGBT city in the United States, edging out Denver, Los Angeles and New York City. Just under five percent of Utah’s population is openly gay or lesbian, though another survey shows 7.6 percent. We’ve known for many years that gays flock to Salt Lake, drawn from many smaller towns in Utah and surrounding states. Salt Lake’s counter-culture has thrived for decades. While gay and lesbian people live throughout the valley (in fact, it is surprising how many gay couples are living in the heavily-Mormon suburbs of Salt Lake City), much of the gay population is clustered in four areas of the city: COPYRIGHT © 2017 — QSALTLAKE — 801-997-9763

10 Liberty Park/9th & 9th (9th South was just named Harvey Milk Boulevard), Capitol Hill/Avenues, Sugar House and an interesting “ghetto” of lesbians in South Salt Lake. There is also the Westshire neighborhood in West Valley with mid-century mod-

ern houses by architect Ron Molen that has attracted a large number of gay men. Nowhere in the state is the concentration of gay people larger than the Marmalade district on the west side of Capitol Hill. Many gay and lesbian people are remodeling homes, buying newly built condominiums and renting in gay-friendly apartment complexes. It doesn’t hurt that an upscale gay bar and progressive theater company are in the neighborhood. Visitors looking for the gay commercial area may be a bit disappointed to find that gay businesses are strewn

throughout the city, rather than concentrated on a single street. Areas to try, though, are the 9th & 9th business district (at the intersection of 900 E. and 900 S., now called Harvey Milk Boulevard) the 15th & 15th business district and Sugar House.

Arts Utah has long been home to a thriving and diverse Arts scene. Whether you’re looking to spend an afternoon in a gallery or a night grooving to a local band, you’ll be sure to find something you like.

Galleries From oils to watercolors and past masters to contemporary masterpieces, Utah’s galleries contain enough offerings to satisfy any taste. At the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, housed in the Salt Palace Convention Center downtown, you will find traveling exhibits as well as more COPYRIGHT © 2017 — QSALTLAKE — 801-997-9763

Utah’s LGBT and ally directory permanent galleries featuring local artists. A Gallery hosts paintings and sculpture by emerging and midcareer artists including abstracts and landscapes as well as figurines. Art Access & Access II Galleries mainly exhibit the work of artists with disabilities and artists from other under-served communities including the elderly and poor. Sugar House Art Walk is the second Friday of the month.

Music Thankfully, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir doesn’t have a monopoly on music in Utah. Downtown Salt Lake City is home to the Utah Symphony, which performs and hosts several concerts each year. Opera lovers will want to check out Salt Lake Citybased Utah Opera’s season of classic and contemporary works and Utah Festival Opera’s summer offerings of opera and musicals in Logan’s Ellen Eccles Theatre (Cache County). Billed as “Utah’s Other Choir,” the openly gay Salt Lake Men’s Choir presents four concerts annually in Salt Lake City. Many summer outdoor concert series exist.

Theatre Broadway isn’t the only place you can see a Broadway show anymore. The newly built Eccles Theatre on Main Street brings in several shows a year. Capitol Theatre and the COPYRIGHT © 2017 — QSALTLAKE — 801-997-9763

University of Utah’s Kingsbury Hall regularly bring traveling shows. The Capitol is also home to the Utah Opera and Ballet West. The University is also home to the Pioneer Theatre Company which hosts a diverse season of classic and new plays and two student-run theatres, Babcock Theatre and Studio 115. Meanwhile, the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center’s three spaces host a number of excellent smaller companies such as Plan-B Theatre Company, Pygmalion Productions SB Dance. Salt Lake Acting Company runs a show poking fun at Utah culture each year called Saturday’s Voyeur that is a must-see in the Marmalade neighborhood. Those wanting to get out of Salt Lake City to see a show should try the Egyptian Theatre in Park City, the Tony Award-winning Utah Shakespearean Festival at Southern Utah University or the Utah Festival Opera in Logan.

Organizations Political Equality Utah seeks to achieve political equality for Utah’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender citizens and their families. In the past, they have sponsored campaigns against anti-gay legislation including 2004’s Amendment 3, which amended Utah’s constitution to ban same-sex marriage. They are currently working on anti-discrimination ordinances in cities across the state, modeled after a successful model passed in Salt Lake City.

Spiritual/Religious For gays and lesbians with a Mormon (Latter-day Saint) background, the organization Affirmation offers fellowship and support; similarly, Reconciliation offers social activities and Sunday firesides for gay and lesbian Mormons seeking spirituality. Family Fellowship is an association that seeks to strengthen families with gay or lesbian members. Integrity Utah is the local Episcopal diocese’s outreach for queer Episcopalians. Sacred Light of Christ Metropolitan Community Church is a queer-positive Christian church with services held each Sunday. The South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society on Highland Drive offers a gay and lesbian focus group, and many Unitarian, Episcopalian and United Church of Christ churches in the Salt Lake Valley are gay-affirming, as is First Baptist Church on 13th East.

Health & HIV For 30 years the Utah AIDS Foundation have been providing assistance for those living with HIV and AIDS. UAF, the Utah Pride Center and the Salt Lake Valley Health Department have free and low-cost HIV testing services.

Social The Utah Pride Center offers a variety of health and wellness, social, education and advocacy programs for adults and youth in the queer

community. These include DiverseCity Writing Group, a film discussion series, an LGBT speakers bureau and a mental health task force, a group for older gays and lesbians, among others. SAGE Utah is an organization that reaches out to serve the needs of Utah’s aging LGBT community through socials and direct services. And don’t forget the wildly popular Third Friday Bingo held monthly by the Matrons of Mayhem. These camp drag beauties serve bingo and shade to an incredibly diverse audience. Yes, this is a family-friendly event in all ways of talking about it at First Baptist Church, 777 S. 1300 East at 7pm on the third Friday of the month, and in Sugar House Park in the summers. New in town is Drag Brunch on Sundays put on by Viva La DIVA and Miss Winston’s Tupperware Parties.

Sports Pride Softball, The Salt Lake Goodtime Bowling Leage, QKickball and other sports groups are great for seasonal fun. The Queer Utah Aquatic Club promotes adult, amateur swimming and invites members of all orientations and skill levels. VentureOUT has many hikes and campouts through the year.

Annual Events From Film Festivals to Pride Located in downtown Salt Lake City, the Utah Pride Center hosts Utah Pride the first weekend in June, an annual event for the state’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. The University of Utah also hosts a month of film screenings, lectures and discussions about queer history and culture to celebrate National Coming Out Day (October 11). HIV/AIDS Awareness For over twenty years the Utah AIDS Foundation has held its annual Walk for Life each September to raise money and awareness for people affected by HIV/AIDS in Utah. also participate. In cooperation with UAF, Hotel Monaco (owned by the very gay-friendly Kimpton Hotel Group) also sponsors the Pink Party in spring and red part in winter. The hotel’s lobby is decorated in red, red food and beverages are served and guests come dressed in red to commemorate World AIDS Day.

Film Festivals The annual Sundance Film Festival (held each January in Park City) often showcases several films with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters and content. The Utah Film Center also hosts Damn These Heels film festival in June.
