Quarriers group work support in Glasgow’s primary schools Quarriers Opt-In Service is the new group work support provider for all primary schools in the Glasgow area. We are excited about this opportunity to make a real difference for pupils across the city, and look forward to working with your school to support the wellbeing and attainment agenda. Quarriers has more than 18 years’ experience of delivering in-school support, and has a proven track record of success. We look forward to establishing new partnerships and working together to support the most vulnerable pupils in Glasgow’s schools and help them to become settled and confident learners. Our focus is supporting pupils in primary 6 and 7 who are experiencing moderate mental health difficulties and issues around emotional wellbeing. Children can also be referred around concerns about stress and anxiety, peer relationships, social isolation, grief and loss, and confidence and self-esteem, and we provide specialist support to help pupils address issues associated with moving from primary to secondary school.
The benefits of group work
Reporting and evaluation
Group work presents opportunities for children to share common experiences, connect with their peers, and develop confidence, self-esteem, empathy and social consciousness. Our sessions can be tailored to address challenging behaviour, anxiety, phobic behaviour, grief or other issues depending on the young people’s needs, and will be underpinned by recognised support models.
Staff will build evaluation processes into group intervention to establish the impact of support and the progress made by pupils. Staff will also complete an end of group evaluation designed to illustrate the impact of support, and this will be linked to the goals for support set out in the referral process.
Group structure There will typically be three to six pupils in each group. Children can be referred for a single group intervention or continuing group interventions according to their individual needs.
The referral process Schools will be issued with a referral form that links to SHANARRI wellbeing outcomes, and this helps to tailor interventions to the needs of the child. On receipt of the referral, Quarriers will contact the school to agree a suitable time and venue to deliver the support in school. Staff will then plan a six-session group intervention, which will be delivered flexibly across an agreed timescale, e.g. one session weekly or additional weekly sessions as appropriate.
Staff will update the referrer every two sessions, and the information gathered during this contact will be used to adjust support and intervention as required. A written report on the group and its outcomes will be available to the referrer at the end of the intervention. Quarriers is looking forward to building relationships with your school, and we welcome any questions you may have about the service.
