Are your workplace hygiene facilities equipped to deal with changing commuting trends? OUR impact on the environment and the need for a healthier lifestyle regularly make the headlines these days. As a result, commuting habits have changed in recent years with more people than ever cycling, walking and even jogging to work. According to a recent report published by the Institute of Employment Studies, over three quarters of a million people now commute to work by bike, an increase of over 13% since 2001. Supported by the government’s ‘Cycle to Work’ scheme, an increasing number of employers are actively encouraging their workers to cycle to work. Not only does this have a positive impact on the environment but it has been proven to promote a healthier workforce - a study by National Cycle Network found that, on average, employees who cycle to work take at least one day less off sick per year compared with workers who drive or take public transport. This increasingly active workforce has led to a number of organisations installing showers as a staff facility. Many workers have come to view shower facilities as the norm, and companies have had to factor into their costs the initial outlay of installation plus the ongoing costs of
hygiene products such as body washes, soaps and shampoos. However, cycling facilities offered by many workplaces are still falling short of employee needs and discouraging them from considering commuting by bike or other active methods. Recent research, commissioned by the British Council for Offices, found that just under half of offices do not have showers installed. If you are one of these companies, then this can lead to a number of problems for your cycling commuters, particularly in the area of workplace hygiene. If your employees are not able to wash after working up a sweat on their way to work then this will result in a build-up of bacteria which can be extremely bad for health, leading to body odour and potential infections. “When bacteria on our skin digest the contents of sweat, it produces by-products that release an odour,” explained Dr Arash Akhavan, founder and owner of the Dermatology and Laser Group. “These bacteria are most prevalent in our underarms, groin and

feet, making them the areas most at risk of infection.” We carry around 1000 types of bacteria on our bodies, including 40 types of fungus. While most of these are good for us, our bodies need help fighting off the bad bacteria with regular washing. If your employees are unable to shower after intense activity on their way to work then these bad bacteria will find their way around the office and onto the most touched points such as keyboards and mice, creating the perfect environment for cross-contamination and the spread of illnesses, especially if your office participates in hotdesking. If your company actively encourages cycling to work or wants to keep up with these changing trends in commuting perhaps now is the time to look at investing in your hygiene facilities to keep your workers healthy. Taking a bite out of food waste The Christmas hospitality season is just around the corner and while some businesses will choose to celebrate in style at hotels and restaurants, others may be happier with an office ‘Secret Santa’ and a few sausage rolls. Whichever they choose, the issue of food waste is too important to be wrapped up and thrown away like used wrapping paper. Cleaning companies have a role to play in helping identify best routes for disposal, as Stephen Hill from Grundon Waste Management explains. Every year, thousands of tonnes of unwanted food are thrown away and during the festive season excess often becomes the norm. Over-catering for parties, all those extra roast potatoes and hard-boiled Brussels sprouts, plus heavyweight portions of Christmas puddings take their toll on the environment as well as waistlines.
18 NOVEMBER 2017
As an expert in food waste management, Grundon works hard to help customers look at new and different ways to dispose of unwanted food in a greener fashion. And, by working in partnership with cleaning and facilities management companies, it can also help to drive down waste management costs.
There are many benefits that can be achieved by introducing a dedicated food waste collection service and these include: n Installation of specially-designed under-the-counter 120 litre food waste bins for food preparation areas, such as in-house catering facilities and in the hospitality sector. n Ability to more closely monitor the amount of food waste and help with better stock and portion control and management. n The achievement of financial savings as, by removing heavy food waste from general waste, it can reduce the cost of collection and disposal. n Collection of segregated food waste by specialist food waste vehicles and delivery to anaerobic digestion facilities, where the waste generates green energy and bio-fertiliser. Grundon works with many food establishments, from large hotels and conference venues to village pubs, helping them to manage their food waste and providing tips and advice for managers and employees to help them WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

Bin benefits
Food waste in the UK hospitality sector
n A rounded bottom for easy cleaning and maintaining hygiene. n No bin bags required. n Clip-down, non-spill lids for quick disposal of cooking oils and liquids. n A design which is both lightweight for easy manoeuvrability and secure enough to eliminate access to pests. n Easy to weigh at the point of collection, helping kitchen staff to keep track of wastage.
understand the benefits of segregation. Kay Chandler, who owns and runs the award-winning White Hart pub and restaurant at Fyfield, in Oxfordshire, with her head chef husband Mark, says this is really important. “Grundon’s Tracy Richardson was very helpful, she had been talking to us about the idea for a while and showed us how the figures worked,” said Kay. “Now we wish we had said yes sooner, because we are benefiting both financially and in terms of being more environmentally friendly. Everyone was used to putting everything in one bin, but when I showed the team the financial impact and how much more it cost us if we didn’t separate food, they could see it made sense. Now they’ve really embraced the idea of segregation - they know it works and they’ve really got into the habit of doing it every day.” It’s not just the hospitality sector where food segregation can work best. Many larger businesses have in-house catering or conference facilities, or are involved in the food service and retail sectors, where adopting such a system can also achieve real benefits. Smaller organisations can also adopt food waste segregation by having smaller kitchen caddies in their kitchen or refreshment areas. Another subject related to food waste often in the news, is that of fatbergs - major build-ups of fats, oils and greases which clog up our sewers WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM
C&M
n 76,000 tonnes of food waste is wasted by fast food restaurants every year. n Annually, food waste costs the UK restaurant sector £682 million, based on 199,000 tonnes of food wastage. n The UK hotel sector wastes 79,000 tonnes of food each year at a cost of £318 million. n 920,000 tonnes of food is thrown away by the hospitality sector each year. n Food wasted in the hospitality sector is equivalent to 1.3 billion meals.keep track of wastage.
- often caused because food outlets don’t have the correct procedures in place to dispose of such liquids and food waste. Installing a grease trap on commercial sinks will separate larger quantities of liquids, solid fats and oils from water to prevent them entering the sewerage system - these can then be professionally emptied and cleaned. In addition, changing to a food waste collection service rather than scraping unwanted food down the sink to be ground up by a macerator - which can place an extra load on an ageing sewer system - is a much cleaner alternative. At Grundon, our expertise and track
record means we know the ideas that work best and, in conjunction with our cleaning and FM partners, we can make a real difference to tackling the food waste mountain. We cannot afford to continue to throw away such large quantities of food waste and we advocate that it should no longer be seen as a disposable commodity - it is a valuable resource and it’s time that it was viewed that way. For more information on dealing with food waste, please contact info@grundon.com or call us on 01753 686 777. WWW.GRUNDON.COM

Add this to the elimination of the more obvious costs of paper storage, which include buying paper, spending personnel resources on filing and finding documents, increasing square footage for physical file storage, and recovering from disastrous flood or fire damage, and it’s clear that going paperless makes a major environmental, as well as financial, contribution. THE robotic scrubber dryers on the market today can clean not only open areas, but also environments where people are constantly walking around - demonstrating total obstacle avoidance and safety. Currently, automated scrubber dryers are being successfully used in healthcare, education, retail, transport, warehouse, and manufacturing facilities. Using robotics as part of the daily cleaning regime enhances standards as it gives guaranteed consistent floor cleaning with the automated machine, allowing the cleaning operative to focus on other more detailed cleaning tasks, for example high and low level cleaning, polishing glass or washroom maintenance. Many of our major retail customers tell us
Cleaning methods have not changed a great deal over the last 25 years - they are still labour intensive, mainly completed out of hours, and involve repetitive tasks such as pushing a scrubber dryer around. The costs associated with cleaning have been squeezed as much as possible, clients are demanding savings, and there is nowhere else to go without automation. Automating cleaning tasks is about offering flexibility, along with cost savings and improved standards. Mark Bresnihan, CEO of ICE, reports. WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM
that automation will help them, there is no doubt about that. Using a robotic machine gives the operative time to do detailed cleaning, which often gets missed if they are spending time pushing a floor cleaning machine around. It empowers the operatives to think about what other cleaning tasks need to be completed whilst the robotic machine cleans the floor. Remote management of the ICE Robo 2 is also possible through our telemetry system, ICEtrak. Tracking the performance, utilisation and location of cleaning equipment is increasingly important across our industry. It can help businesses to reduce costs associated with machines that are under-utilised, and minimises the cost and administration headache associated with equipment that can’t be located. and kill them. The near boiling point natural foam, approved by the Soil Association, acts as a thermal blanket, keeping heat on the weed long enough to kill it. Some die within minutes, with others taking a day or two. A second application can eliminate taproots. An unexpected bonus is that the foam can also eliminate graffiti and remove chewing gum from pavements.

MOST manufacturers know the importance of Lean 5S methodologies, and the custom-branded cleaning station from National Engravers can play an important part in increasing efficiency, saving time and enhancing workplace safety. National Engravers’ cleaning station is a printed visual aid that allows cleaning equipment to be fixed onto a wall-mounted, free standing or mobile board. The advantage
The importance of ‘cleaning stations’ within manufacturing
of this is that the station shows the shadow of each piece of equipment, which quickly indicates missing tools, and allows for quick and efficient storage of equipment after use. Colour-coded equipment is also available, to assist workers in putting items away quickly at the end of a job, and to quickly identify the right tool to use. WWW.NATIONAL-ENGRAVERS.CO.UK JANGRO has enhanced its online training platform, the Learning
Bite-sized learning for busy cleaning operatives
Management Solution. It is now even more versatile and accessible, thanks to the introduction of new cleaning guide shorts, called Task Cards. As well as offering animated video shorts to help operatives train to perform a range of specific
cleaning jobs, the task cards themselves are brief, highly visual documents containing step-by-step instructions for product usage and safety information. The first three task cards are available now to download from www.jangrolms.net and feature the modules: How to mop a floor; How to clean and organise cupboards; and How to clean a toilet. Joanne Gilliard, operations director, said: “Part of our mission here at Jangro is to make high quality training as accessible as possible for our customers. We have spent over six years developing this free, fully interactive e-learning platform, and are constantly refining and updating it. The introduction of our new Task Cards make bite-sized training even more user-friendly and versatile.” WWW.JANGRO.NET JOHNSON & JOHNSON has introduced Clarity hand wash to all staff washrooms across its Pinewood office in Wokingham. The move marks the beginning of a partnership with the social enterprise and Sodexo that will see Clarity hand wash being introduced to other sites across the UK. The product has been trialled at the Pinewood office and there are plans to assess the potential for a nationwide rollout across all

Johnson & Johnson UK offices. It is estimated that the company will create thousands of hours of employment, equivalent to 11 new part-time jobs per year. This has the potential to be hugely beneficial at Clarity where 80% of the employees are blind or disadvantaged. Founded in 1854, it is the UK’s oldest social enterprise and it currently creates more than 10,000 days of work per annum for the staff. Deals with companies like Johnson & Johnson are vital for helping Clarity support as many people as possible. Camilla Marcus-Dew, head of commercial at Clarity, said: “We are delighted to be supplying to Johnson & Johnson and look forward to rolling out our products to more of their offices. It is already making an enormous difference. Each new corporate customer we can supply to has the potential to create thousands of hours of employment for our blind and disadvantaged employees so we need more companies to follow Johnson & Johnson’s lead and help us transform lives.” WWW.SODEXO.CO.UK
