Shopping for waste management tips Today’s shopping centres and retail parks are a haven for consumers keen to shop ‘til they drop and tempt their taste buds in a myriad of coffee houses and fast food outlets. Spare a thought then for the centre managers who have to manage the waste produced, both front-of-house and behind-the-scenes. Stephen Hill, Head of Sales, at Grundon Waste Management, suggests some useful tips and advice. Waste management at shopping centres can be complex, as each one will have its own individual requirements. Not surprisingly, we usually find that levels of recycling and waste management activity vary considerably at different locations - some are very good at recycling, while others unnecessarily send general waste to landfill. From our experience, we know that there are huge savings to be made in
18 MAY 2018
terms of diverting waste from landfill - something we have achieved for all JLL managed shopping centres where we look after waste collection and treatment. For example, whenever waste cannot be recycled, recovered or reprocessed, we sent it to our Energy from Waste (EfW) facilities, where it is incinerated at high temperatures to create renewable electricity for export to the National Grid.
You have to be flexible, look at the solutions available and then devise a bespoke service which will deliver the right results and add real value to their bottom line. We also create opportunities for retailers to generate income from the sale of recyclable items, such as cardboard and plastic, which can then be offset against general waste charges - effectively giving them a discount for being good at waste management. This can be achieved by installing balers where materials such as cardboard and plastic are baled on site, giving them a retail value for reprocessing, which then goes back to the customer. The key is being able to identify the waste streams in the first place. To do this, we carry out waste audits so we can look at the quantities of specific target waste streams - for example, recyclables such as plastics and cardboard - and ways in which we could increase recycling through improved segregation.

A good waste management provider will also take the time to meet with on-site facilities managers to talk about their own environmental concerns and goals. Strong supplier relationships are essential - we meet regularly with our shopping centre manager customers and if you have the support of both the centre management team and the tenants and employees, then you can achieve really impressive results on an ongoing basis. Once we know the composition of the waste, then we can set about the best way of segregating waste streams which suits that premises. Typically, we will look at colour coding bins and internal containers to make segregation and reporting simple, along with posters and signage, and we often provide a tenant’s waste management handbook. The handbooks are full of tips and advice to help them understand how they could better manage their waste and educate their staff about what they should be doing in terms of segregation between mixed recycling and general waste. One solution which has worked really well for us and our customers is gaining the support of cleaning and security teams on site. We provide training sessions so, when they are emptying waste bins at the end of the day, they can keep a watchful eye on different types of waste and remove items from the ‘wrong’ bins to avoid

contamination. We even replaced black waste sacks with clear ones in order to allow cleaning staff to easily identify if items are in the wrong place, and cleaning staff are also trained to identify and alert centre managers when waste containers are full, or compactors need to be emptied or collected. This helps save time and ensures continuity. This is particularly important, for example, over busy holiday periods or sales, when additional collections may be needed, and shows how a flexible approach by the waste management company is required. Often, good results can be achieved from something as simple as repositioning the bins to make them more easily accessible. This is true for our specialist food waste bins, as we
want to make it as easy and convenient as possible for each centre’s many food outlets to segregate food waste which is then collected and sent for anaerobic digestion (AD), creating bio-fuels and bio-fertiliser. Managing waste front-of-house can be more challenging but, again, public awareness campaigns will help. For example, at Ipswich’s Sailmakers Shopping Centre we helped the centre manager install new clearly-marked bin stations to encourage the public to recycle paper, cardboard, cans, and plastic bottles. To find out more about how we can help you to manage your shopping centre waste, email stephen.hill@grundon.com or call 01753 686 777. WWW.GRUNDON.COM

We formulated and offered ‘green’ alternatives to traditional products before it was fashionable to do so, having created our enzyme-based drain cleaner way back in 1986! We then went on to develop our Bio Dose, Bio Clear Drain and Grease trap maintainers for the commercial catering sector. They’re designed to degrade the fats, oils and grease discharged into pipes, drains and sewers and are compatible with septic tank units and sewage systems. Our main aim, however, is to manufacture products which offer effective cleaning and, where appropriate, meet the criteria for EN WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

“This year’s Manchester Cleaning Show was substantially busier than the first one we hosted in the North West two years ago. There was a really good turnout, and the quality of both the exhibitors and speakers was excellent. Overall it was a very good event and our decision to introduce a regional show in the north to alternate with London has been proven to be very successful.” Stan Atkins, chairman, British Cleaning Council and CEO, BICSc.
“The Manchester Cleaning Show has once again provided us with an excellent platform to showcase our range of products and services - including Connected Cleaning - a new concept of networked cleaning that provides a comprehensive overview of machine fleet and manual cleaning activities. Over the two days, we have enjoyed welcoming existing customers to our stand as well as meeting new clients and discussing their cleaning challenges.” Simon Keeping, managing director, UK and Ireland, Kärcher (UK) Ltd.

MANCHESTER CLEANING SHOW 2018
“Big is often not beautiful, and the Manchester Cleaning Show was just the right size to be interesting throughout, friendly and informative. The stands were vibrant and varied, providing an excellent range of products and services for everybody in the cleaning industry. I really enjoyed the show, and will certainly return.”
“The Manchester Cleaning Show has been brilliant. We’ve had a lot of footfall that we didn’t expect, met lots of current customers and potential new customers, engaged with other suppliers - it’s been really exciting.” Charlotte Parr, UK head of sales and marketing, Bunzl Cleaning and Hygiene Supplies.
Doug Cooke, chairman, CSSA.
“The show has been incredibly busy. But it’s not just the volume, it’s the quality of the people we’ve been talking to that has exceeded expectations. As well as smaller companies and one-man bands, we’ve had national groups, the bigger boys as well, people with buying power.”
“The Manchester Cleaning Show was vibrant. The feedback from our members was extremely positive - they had plenty of really productive meetings and were busy from beginning to end of the show. Importantly for our members, we met with contract cleaners and other buyers of cleaning and hygiene products. It was the perfect opportunity to explain the value of our Accreditation Schemes and encourage them to specify scheme membership in their tenders.” David Garcia, vice president, Cleaning and Hygiene Suppliers Association.
Phil Collumbine, sales director, Jangro Group.
“Once again Manchester gave the whole of the cleaning sector a regional platform where new products could be showcased, new ideas could be discussed, and key issues could be debated. The networking opportunities were also fantastic, as not everyone can get down to the London show. Also our industry is now moving so quickly in terms of innovations, technology and fresh challenges, we need the Cleaning Show to be an annual event to keep up with what’s happening.” Paul Thrupp, Federation of Window Cleaners and deputy chair of the BCC.
“Statistics show that the cleaning industry is made up primarily of micro, small and medium sized enterprises. Engaging with these businesses is crucial to getting the health and safety message out there, and presenting a series of health and safety seminars at the Manchester Cleaning Show provided HSE with a perfect opportunity to do just that.” Tracy Hamilton, operational policy advisor, HSE. 26 MAY 2018

MANCHESTER CLEANING SHOW 2018
“The Manchester show was really good. We went to the London one, enjoyed that, but it was close to the city centre so we knew there’d be people there. We went to the Manchester show not knowing what to expect but it was really busy and the show looked really good. We spoke to a lot of people about what we do, I was happy with the way it has gone.”
“The first Manchester Cleaning Show was amazing, really busy, and we thought this year’s might have been a little bit down on that, but it’s not - it’s completely exceeded what we expected. The calibre of the customers has been really high.” Daniel Cross, marketing manager, Vaclensa.
“For us, the show has been brilliant. We could have closed the doors on Wednesday night and we’d have been happy with it. Thursday morning was incredible. We had some big customers, some new customers, some old customers wanting to progress, dealers as well.” Rue Paul, national sales manager, Viper.

Chris Herrett, British Institute of Facilities Management.
“The show was very, very good. There was a buzz, people were very positive, very intuitive and they showed a genuine interest in what is going on in the cleaning industry.”
“The show has gone really, really well. We have been busier than expected. Considering it’s a smaller show than London we had a lot of footfall…It was an amazing success.”
Ashley Cooper, international key account manager, Kennedy Hygiene Products.
Kayley Sugars, marketing manager, Spinaclean.
“The seminar went well, very good attendance and some interesting questions afterwards as well. This is the fourth year I have presented at the Cleaning Show and it is always a really interesting audience. It’s a good mix, and we always end up with people who actually have influence over the things we are trying to talk about.” Rob Shaw, HSE, who presented in the seminar theatre on preventing slips, trips and falls.

Considerable duplication of effort in placing orders - for example, a contractor’s admin staff will often place an order on a supplier’s website, key the detail into a budgeting spreadsheet, then again into the purchase ledger to raise an official supplier order and one final time to generate a client invoice - the same transaction recorded in four separate systems and all requiring manual reconciliation. 3. Time spent ‘unpicking’ supplier invoices. A single invoice might show up to 50 deliveries to different sites, all of which need to be validated in the contractor’s purchase ledger against a purchase order and a budget control sheet. Inefficiencies exist on the supplier side too. The creation and emailing of sales orders from the website and the production of a constant

10,000,000 Henrys… and counting OVER the last 40 years more than 10 million Henrys have been manufactured by Numatic International, and most of them are still in use today. Independently rated as ‘the UK’s most reliable vacuum brand’, all Numatic products are built to last and Henry is no exception. He may have changed slightly over the years, with new technology and features, but his professional design has stood the test of time. The company can still service the very first Henry today.

It sells and hires reconditioned floor cleaning machines including vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers and floor polishers, scrubber driers and carpet cleaners.
Powering a new generation of floor cleaning equipment
The company works with independent UK battery specialist, DBS Leoch, to source the latest battery technology for its machines. These are deep cycle batteries with a particular focus on powering cleaning and maintenance equipment such as A3 Machines’ range of battery operated scrubber dryers. The AGM batteries offer up to 600 cycles, are sealed and maintenance-free, non-spillable with no need to fill, and deliver four times the cycles of traditional flooded batteries. Chris North, sales director at DBS Leoch, said: “The A3 Machines’ range of products are known for their effectiveness and reliability. We’re delighted that our AGM batteries are able to bring the power to their machines for cleaning and
