Teamwork and engagement reaps bumper recycling harvest Thanks to the iconic Blue Planet II and widespread media coverage about the use of plastics, recycling is a hot topic. At home, most of us take the trouble to segregate out our different waste streams in accordance with local council recycling regulations, but during work and play it can be a different story. Scott Williams, Head of Contracts at Grundon Waste Management, looks at some of the tips for engaging employees and other partners, such as suppliers or contractors, in improved waste management. For a project to be successful, it’s important for as many people as possible to be engaged, to understand what is trying to be achieved, and to share the path to success. Last month’s World Cup was perhaps the ultimate example of this, as plenty of people who wouldn’t normally class themselves as football fans, became caught up in the excitement of how far England would progress. Recycling is perhaps not quite in that league, but there are plenty of things employers and facilities managers can do to create interest and enthusiasm. We’ve been undertaking a great deal of work lately with different shopping centres, and there the task has been to get all the centre management teams on board, the tenants and their employees, cleaners and security personnel, and also the public. In all these cases, good communication and a 18 AUGUST 2018
partnership approach has been the key to success. Activities which can make a difference include: • Education programmes for tenants - explaining the goals and why change needs to happen. • Tenant Waste Engagement days giving everyone the chance to find out more and ask questions. • Tenant Waste Management handbooks - explaining the dos and don’ts of recycling, segregation and contamination. • Really simple, easy-to-understand picture signage and posters. • Setting up ‘green teams’ of waste champions - encouraging those who are enthusiastic about recycling to spread the word among their peers. • Training for cleaning contractors and security staff - making the most of a partnership approach by
involving everyone at each location. • Regular on-site meetings - feedback is crucial as people need to know they are succeeding in increasing recycling and meeting targets. • Public Engagement/Waste Awareness days - don’t forget the public and other visitors, make sure signage shows them where to place different recyclable materials. • Tell your recycling success story with a photography shoot and a press release in local papers and on social media. Benefits Those taking part are much more likely to participate if they can see the benefits themselves. For example, at the Sailmakers Shopping Centre in Ipswich, recycling percentages increased between January-May 2018 by 39% as a result of improved WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM
SPONSORED FEATURE
engagement, and the increase has been so significant that the centre now requires us to deliver an additional weekly recycling collection. As tenants are now segregating waste and recycling more, in turn they earn a rebate on their service charges when those materials are sold for recycling and reprocessing - a double win for both the environment and the bottom line. At The Cotswold Plough Hotel in Clanfield, Oxfordshire, all hotel and restaurant waste had been going into general waste bins, with a resulting waste surcharge, partly because food waste is so heavy. With our support and engagement, the hotel’s management team and the kitchen staff introduced recycling bins, glass bins and separate food waste bins. In the first four months alone, general waste weight went down from an average of 450kg a week to around 140kg and the change was reflected in their lower waste management charges.
clear ones for quicker identification during the emptying process. This ensures a ‘belt and braces’ approach to correct segregation and helps avoid contamination. It’s a similar story at West One Shopping Centre in the heart of London’s West End, where we have trained both cleaning and security staff in recycling dos and don’ts. For example, cleaners can now recognise when a compactor is likely to be full and that it is time to order a collection and replacement. Security employees have been made waste champions as the centre manager says that because they spend time walking around the concourses, they see a lot of people doing the ‘wrong’ thing in terms of waste
C&M
disposal. If this happens, now they simply radio the cleaning team and it will be attended to. Conclusion These ideas are just a few examples of the difference that good engagement and communication can achieve. Of course every location is different, but with our years of experience and expertise, we also know how to find the right solutions for the right requirements and we know how to get the people on board to get the right results. So if you want to find out more, then talk to our team and we’ll help you spread the recycling word. Please contact: sales.slough@grundon.com 01753 686 777 WWW.GRUNDON.COM
Partnership At Sailmakers, the centre’s cleaning team are now primed to check the waste bins as they empty them, removing any items which have been put into wrong bins. To help them do this easily, we replaced black sacks with WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

They have a touchscreen control panel which includes video tutorials on how to operate and maintain the equipment. You can also set water flow, suction, pad/brush pressure, and speed for different flooring types/zones within one site. This means the operator simply has to select which zone they are cleaning, and the settings will adjust automatically. The integrated telemetry system gives complete visibility of the equipment utilisation and performance, and all this information can be easily accessed via our App. What aspirations do you have to continue to build the ICE business, either through acquisition or organically? I think for this year, other than our budgeted organic growth, 2018 is about consolidation for ICE and making sure everything is future proof. increased 50% year on year, which is great news and we really feel we are ahead of the curve in this regard. We also see it as a real positive that more autonomous machines are coming to market as this is the future. The fact that our machine has been in the market for some time, but with continual software developments and enhancements means we have a tried and tested solution. This puts us in a strong place as this area of the market continues to evolve. Our ‘Smartly Connected’ campaign is now really starting to come to life. Connecting the operative in the workplace to our business through hardware and software solutions to better support them in their daily tasks is hugely important. This, coupled with the correct machine usage data, analytics and remote diagnosing of equipment faults and potential failures, will form a huge part of our route to customers in the future. It will also become crucial to people making those all-important asset purchase or rental decisions going forward. Arming WWW.CLEANINGMAG.COM

ODOUR CONTROL
The air we breathe Samantha Stocks, director at washroom services provider Simply Washrooms, discusses how poor air quality can lead to offensive odours and the spread of harmful bacteria and the implications this can have for commercial buildings. IT might seem obvious to say, but first impressions really do count. In buildings such as hotels, leisure centres, restaurants, airports, cinemas, or in healthcare environments such as residential care homes, odour control is essential for the health and wellbeing of visitors, residents and staff alike. Recently the Relatives and Residents Association said odour was one of the key determining factors as to why families would not choose a residential care home for their elderly relatives. The same is true for the commercial sector. No one wants to stay in a hotel room or use the washrooms in an airport that do not pass the sniff test. Importantly, this has significant financial and reputational implications for any commercial business. After all, every unoccupied room - whether that be

CSSA WOMEN FOR WOMEN GROUP The CSSA Women’s group have teamed up with Jangro to host a series of free training programmes to help refresh the skills required by cleaning operatives to carry out their day to day duties at a confident level. The next training session will be held at the Jangro Head Office, Jangro House, Worsley Road, Farnworth, Bolton, BL4 9LU on Tuesday 18th September from 10am. Topics will include: • Introduction to equipment • Guide to Cleaning Wash Basins & Taps • Guide to Cleaning Stainless Steel • Guide to Cleaning Glass & Mirrors • Guide to Cleaning a Toilet • Guide to Cleaning & Organising Cupboards • Guide to Mopping a floor Manchester | 18th September 2018 | 10am – 12 noon
Following a series of surveys within the commercial cleaning and facilities management sector, cleaning operatives voiced the like to refresh skills and learn new techniques to apply within their daily roles. In addition to the morning session we will work on self-confidence building and networking with peers. This a great opportunity for individuals to join the free training session to learn new skills and for companies to put forward individuals to help their business grow. If you would like to join the session simply email Cecelia Hubert at Jangro: c.hubert@jangrohq.net
The initiative and group is already supported by the CSSA and the British Cleaning Council and is sponsored by Principle Cleaning Services. You can follow developments and news via our social media links. CSSA Women for Women and Youth Group @cssa4women
