Cleaning Show 2021 – registrations open

Free registration for the Cleaning Show 2021 is now open – simply visit www.cleaningshow.co.uk to secure your free pass to the UK’s largest dedicated cleaning and hygiene event. And the appetite to get back to live, face-to-face events is driving registration numbers which are already tracking well ahead of those achieved at this stage ahead of the previous show. Exhibitor bookings are also coming thick and fast, with a number of major businesses confirming their presence in the past two weeks, and another expanding the space it had already booked. A full list of exhibitors can be found on the Cleaning Show website. The event – which takes place at London’s Excel from 2-4 November – will feature all the usual Cleaning Show attractions as well as new features including the CSSA Innovation Showcase and a ‘Hall of Fame’ awards ceremony. In addition, the Cleaning Show Conference will celebrate all that has been achieved by cleaning professionals during the pandemic, and the work done by the British Cleaning Council in the formation of the APPG for the UK cleaning and hygiene sectors. The conference will be an opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved - reputations have been built, credibility established and cleaning has been driven up the political agenda. Enhancements in cleaning practices have not been limited to personnel and public perception during the pandemic - technological and process developments have also moved ahead at pace. The Cleaning Show 2021 Conference Programme will provide a forum to present and discuss all these developments, and consider the critical next steps for an industry that has placed itself on the frontline of public health and safety delivery. In addition to the carefully curated programme, the Cleaning & Support Services Association

(CSSA) will be hosting afternoon presentations and panel discussions within the conference theatre looking at topics including sustainability, smart building technologies and COVID-secure workplaces. Topics to be included within the Cleaning Show 2021 Conference Programme include: • The APPG for the UK cleaning and hygiene sectors a critical role. • The new normal for cleaning post-COVID-19: a look at the role of cleaning in protecting public health and safety. • The benefits and importance of paying a Living Wage. • Research report: a roadmap towards sustainability. • The rise of the robots: how autonomous cleaning can support and enhance current cleaning practices. • Technology matters: employing new technology to deliver a modern cleaning service. • Ready for anything: the importance of training and education and the role of apprenticeships. • Buyer beware: the rise of unscrupulous traders... and how to spot them. • Sustainable cleaning – meeting the challenge. I look forward to seeing you at The Cleaning Show. Secure your free registration now – www.cleaningshow.co.uk – to ensure you are kept abreast of show news as the event approaches. SPECIAL REPORT

Managing the return to the office Employee training and cleaning education is vital if the British workforce is to return safely to office-based working. The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced a new world of regulations and requirements for employers and building managers to comply with, making training one of the most important elements of maintaining a safe workspace. Gill Ireson, head of sales at Robert Scott, highlights the key areas that businesses need to be aware of in order to operate a safe workplace in the wake of the pandemic. THERE’S a whole host of new rules and regulations that must be complied with and employees want to see evidence that their workplaces have implemented protocols correctly. Facilities managers and others in charge of cleaning regimes must take the time to understand the rules and complete their own risk assessments to develop the right approach for their buildings to ensure they are fully compliant. It will be important to make sure clear guidance and easy to follow instructions are in place and that every employee has access to thorough training and education to reinforce new practices. There are things you can do to make this easier. For example, bringing in a colour coding system is a good way of differentiating equipment for designated spaces to cut the risk of cross contamination. Robert Scott’s Big White Mops come in a range of colour-coded heads to comply with the colour coding cleaning practice allowing workplaces to easily identify which products should be used in certain areas from kitchens through to washrooms. Get the basics in place The new normal is going to include things like social distancing and hand sanitiser stations

ODOUR CONTROL & AIR CARE

Protect and refresh to help restore consumer confidence WITH premises reopening, the priority for business owners and facilities managers is to ensure that they are not only clean and safe, but also that they can restore confidence for returning staff and visitors. First impressions count, and can begin before people even see if a venue is clean. The sense of smell is the strongest of the five senses and one of the body’s front-line defence mechanisms, designed to set off alarm bells if a foul smell is detected. “Many premises were closed for months, and will not smell as fresh as they should,” said P-Wave’s sales and marketing manager, Mark Wintle. “People’s trust in the cleanliness and safety of a venue can be negatively impacted if it smells bad, as they will wonder why, and suspect that it is not hygienic.” Foul smells in any building are typically caused by the presence of bacteria which has been left to grow through either inadequate or infrequent cleaning procedures. While the washroom may be the cause of the worst odours in a building, improving the air quality and freshness throughout premises is essential. Washroom focus In all premises, to feel safe, consumers need to see - and smell - that the washroom is immaculately clean, but poor plumbing or maintenance, or an inadequate cleaning regime, can lead to unfortunate odours. Mobile air purifier designed to contain the spread of infection THE professional division of Miele has announced the launch of its AirControl air purifier to minimise the spread of air-borne infections and improve hygiene efficiency within closed spaces. To help businesses prevent the spread of viruses, the white goods provider has manufactured the AirControl in record time, making it the fastest ‘concept to production’ product to hit the market in Miele’s history. Miele Professional has collaborated with UlmAir, an air filtration company based in Germany, to ensure best-in-class technology is used throughout the design of AirControl. scenarios where loose surface materials need to be picked up immediately without the requirement for a deep clean. This process is ideal for minerals and particles such as dust, fluff, hair, or road dirt that sits on top of surfaces without becoming embedded into the pile of the carpet and causing permanent damage. Dry vacuum cleaners operate with high suction power helping to lift unwanted particles directly from the surface material to help keep textile flooring in good condition. When selecting which machine, understanding the space and environment is key. For busy thoroughfares, it is important to focus on super-quiet motors as these will generate low noise levels allowing for a thorough clean without disrupting people within the vicinity. Multiwash takes centre stage in Plymouth AT the end of May, the Theatre Royal Plymouth reopened after nearly 20 weeks of enforced closure due to various government lockdowns. As it prepared to reopen, the theatre’s level of cleanliness and hygiene was the highest priority, alongside ensuring the confidence of cast, crew, staff, and visitors. Chris Porter, business support officer at the Theatre Royal Plymouth, considers the crucial role taken by Truvox International’s Multiwash floor cleaning machine in preparing for reopening and maintaining cleaning and hygiene standards. He said: “Our biggest challenge was to ensure that we had enough hygiene assistants for when visiting companies and patrons arrived at the theatre. As well as this, we reviewed what equipment we already had, and what needed to be purchased in order to meet and exceed expectations. After researching an array of floor cleaning equipment, a discussion with our local

benefits from ‘Clean Release Technology’ (CRT). Purell Healthy Soap enables users to achieve a really deep clean thanks to the CRT. This technology ensures that more than 99% of dirt and germs are removed from hands, and up to 3.4 times fewer germs are left on the skin, compared

to standard soaps. The new Purell ES8 dispenser addresses the two most common service issues: dispensers running empty and worn out batteries. Its ‘at-a-glance’ refill design makes it easy to monitor product levels with one quick look, saving both time and labour - and potential customer complaints about empty dispensers.
