EDITOR’S LETTER C&M

Cleaning Show conference agenda announced

The Cleaning Show 2021 returns to London’s Excel on 2-4 November following one of the most challenging episodes for the cleaning sector in a generation. So much has been achieved by cleaning professionals during the pandemic, and much has been done by the British Cleaning Council and the formation of the APPG for the UK cleaning and hygiene sectors to raise the profile and recognised importance of cleaning within the wider world. Reputations have been built, credibility established and cleaning has been driven up the political agenda. Enhancements in cleaning practices have not just been limited to personnel and public perception during the pandemic technological and process developments have also moved ahead at pace. The Cleaning Show 2021 conference programme has just been revealed and will provide a forum to present and discuss all these developments, and consider the critical next steps for an industry that has placed itself on the frontline of public health and safety delivery. In addition to the carefully curated programme, the Cleaning & Support Services Association (CSSA) will be hosting afternoon presentations and panel discussions within the conference theatre looking at topics including sustainability, smart building technologies and COVIDsecure workplaces. The CSSA will also use the venue to present details of the finalists in this year’s CSSA Innovation Showcase, which will also be a major attraction at this year’s event. Whilst speakers and panellists are currently being agreed, the topics to be included within the Cleaning Show 2021 conference programme include: • The APPG for the UK cleaning and hygiene sectors - a critical role. • The new normal for cleaning post-COVID-19: a look at the role of cleaning in protecting public health and safety. • The benefits and importance of paying the Living Wage. • Research report: a roadmap towards sustainability. • The rise of the robots: how autonomous cleaning can support and enhance current cleaning practices.

• Proving a point: the role of testing in ensuring (and proving) a clean and safe environment. • Technology matters: employing new technology to deliver a modern cleaning service. • Ready for anything: the importance of training and education and the role of apprenticeships. • Hand hygiene for the new normal: systems and products to protect the public - at work and at play. • Buyer beware: the rise of unscrupulous traders...and how to spot them. • Baseline protection: the role of antimicrobial surface protection in ensuring a clean environment. • Sustainable cleaning – meeting the challenge. Further details about the Cleaning Show and its conference programme can be found at: www.cleaningshow.co.uk. As speakers are confirmed and topics are fine-tuned, regular updates will be posted on the Cleaning Show website. Research from across the globe into the readiness of people to return to exhibitions shows an overwhelming appetite to get together and to once again start doing business face-to-face. The Cleaning Show will be one of the first opportunities for our sector to do this, so the organiser is looking forward to – and preparing for – a very busy show. I look forward to seeing you there. I wish you a clean, tidy and healthy month ahead.

When properly performed, disinfectants have a precise and immediate effect against pathogens. But what happens between the individual cleaning intervals? Not only dirt, but a range of viruses and bacteria accumulate and can thus be transmitted. Antiviral films start right here. Easy applied as self adhering or self adhesive solution, the removeable and recyclable films offer a long-term effect and effective surface protection, when used for example on tables, handles and displays.

C&M BCC COLUMN

Best practice for cleaning Simon Keeping, managing director of Kärcher UK and Ireland, chair of Clean Sweep Hire, a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners, and a member of ICMMA, reports. IT seems that, finally, cleaning has been recognised and given the importance it deserves. However, confusion exists over what is considered best practice for cleaning. What is cleaning? What should be cleaned? What is disinfecting? What should be disinfected? Can you disinfect without cleaning? Are misting devices an effective method for disinfecting?

touch areas only, eg door handles and hand rails. For all other surfaces cleaning is sufficient. The NHS recommends that ‘low-risk’ areas or ‘pathways’ do not require disinfecting and that NHS organisations ‘may choose to revert to general purpose detergents for cleaning’.

Know the differences • Cleaning removes pathogenic micro-organisms, dirt and impurities from surfaces or objects. Cleaning works by using a detergent and water to physically remove germs. This process does not necessarily kill germs, but by removing them, lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection. • Disinfecting kills pathogenic micro-organisms on surfaces or objects. Disinfecting works by using chemicals to kill germs. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning can further lower the risk of spreading infection. • Sanitising lowers the number of germs on surfaces or objects to a safe level, as judged by public health standards or requirements. This process works by either cleaning or disinfecting to lower the risk of spreading infection. Cleaning alone typically removes up to 98.9% of pathogenic micro-organisms, whilst disinfecting removes up to 99.999% Where is disinfecting required? The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recommend disinfecting high

How to disinfect effectively Even when disinfecting is required, the correct processes must be followed to ensure hygienic cleaning results. Cleaning with water and detergent is a necessary first step to remove impurities such as dust and dirt - only then can disinfection, the process that destroys and reduces the number of pathogenic micro-organisms, take place. It is required to thoroughly clean surfaces before disinfection, otherwise it is ineffective. Fogging and misting devices Fogging and misting applications have become popular as a visible reassurance of ‘cleaning in progress’. But questions have to be asked regarding how effective they are at disinfection and the role they play in the cleaning process. They may be easy to use and give the appearance of a ‘quick win’ but are no substitute for a robust cleaning and disinfecting regime and certainly do not justify some of the corner-cutting we are seeing in our industry. Disinfecting with fogging or misting devices simply cannot take place without cleaning first.

Steam offers an environmentally friendly alternative to the use of disinfectants or in areas where chemicals cannot be used. Steam also has the benefit of cleaning and disinfecting in a single application. Check that the manufacturer has the relevant certification proving their equipment is capable of disinfection. Ensure too that the correct steam cleaner is selected as, for example, moisture generating steam cleaners would not be allowed in hospital clinical areas where patients are present. Never underestimate the value of training and the importance of robust risk assessments. Correctly trained operators with an awareness of the health requirements will ensure cleaning is completed safely. This includes operator safety and use of PPE, particularly in the current climate. If you are responsible for the cleaning regime of your facilities, ask the question - are you paying for disinfecting in areas where it is not required? The long term impact of constantly disinfecting to the environment or people’s health is still unknown, so do not carry out such extremes where it is not required. And remember - if disinfecting is required, it is absolutely necessary that thorough cleaning takes place beforehand to ensure the disinfection process is effective. ICMMA and the WCEC are members of the British Cleaning Council. The views of Council members are their own.

A JOB WORTH DOING - A CONTRACTOR’S BLOG C&M

Technology and training - let’s not waste the opportunity Lee Andrews, CEO of DOC Cleaning, reports. LAST month, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by the editor of this magazine, Neil Nixon, for a webinar. One of the many items we discussed was how the link between technology and training will play a critical role in shaping our industry’s future. If there was ever an industry suited to online training, it is cleaning, possibly the most labour-intensive industry on the planet. In the past, a number of factors - the sheer number of staff, the higher-than-average staff turnover, staff dispersed across hundreds of different locations, not to mention unsociable hours - had all effectively turned company-wide, hands-on training into an unaffordable luxury. Yes, contractors of sufficient size could afford a training officer to manage in-house delivery. Yes, they could potentially become a BICSc Training Hub with their own managers as accredited assessors. Yet even these solutions could not guarantee that all front-line staff would receive the necessary skills training they needed. Staff would miss out not only on the training itself, but on the sense of engagement and belonging that training engenders. So it was with open arms that the industry welcomed the recent arrival of online skills training for frontline staff in what can only be described as a revolutionary change. BICSc, the industry’s official training body, has

now developed a full set of online, video-based training modules, whilst innovative companies such as UhUb have led the commercial providers charge in this area. The timing was perfect. Like any digital media, online training boasts the invaluable benefit of being updatable quickly when requirements, rules or methods change - all of which have applied to our industry in great measure over the last 12 months. To be clear, it doesn’t mean to say that face-to-face training is no longer required. The online training of skilled tasks should always be followed by in-person assessment and, as I understand it, BICSc online training cannot be signed off and accreditation given without formal assessment under the auspices of the BICSc scheme. With commercial packages, of course, it is up to contractors to ensure that the necessary follow-up assessment is completed. One thing’s certain, however, the momentum established by online training means that the days of spending hours in classrooms are surely gone, for frontline staff at least. All of which brings me back to the subject of apprenticeships. I have argued in the past that the Apprenticeship Levy does not deliver value for money to cleaning contractors. Firstly, no cleaning-specific apprenticeship for frontline staff has yet been accepted

by the Institute For Apprenticeships (IFA). Secondly, the wide range of good training that has been developed from within the industry cannot be used to draw down on Levy payments, as neither the organisations delivering it, nor cleaning contractors themselves, are ROATO registered (Register of Apprentice Training Organisations). And thirdly, the requirement that 20% of an apprentice’s time must be spent in off-the-job training activities, which cannot happen outside paid working hours, is impractical, meaning your apprentice is effectively unavailable for work one day a week. The good news is that the BCC and its trailblazers, supported by the APPG, are already working on a new apprenticeship, which we all hope will be accepted quickly by the IFA. All I ask is that when it comes to developing content for the courses, the focus for a cleaning apprenticeship remains firmly online, we let technology take the strain, and that the wheel does not need to be reinvented. COVID-19: Maintaining standards now restrictions are lifting Neil Nixon reports. Following the features in previous issues of C&M looking at the role the cleaning sector continues to play in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, I am continuing to post news, new product information or video interviews/webinars online to allow for the more immediate dissemination of any updates. Please take a look at www.cleaningmag.com – content is changing on a daily basis. As previously, I will continue to use the pages of C&M to look in greater detail at cleaning and hygiene practices, particularly as businesses are now reopening as restrictions begin to lift.

NEW CAMPAIGN TO ENSURE HAND SANITISER PRACTICES MEASURE UP and product tampering. All of which can mean an uncompliant and potentially harmful end product. Furthermore, mixing hand sanitisers can result in a poor user experience, producing a watery or sticky product, and can also cause skin irritation [2], which can all contribute towards lower levels of compliance. The wrong product could also jam the pump, rendering the dispenser unusable. Autonomous and manual cleaning working in harmony Julie Kitchener, head of customer service and marketing at ICE, reports. THE last 12 months have proven to be a pivotable point in our industry. The embracement and appetite for innovation through autonomous cleaning is like nothing we have seen before. This time last year during the first wave of the pandemic, we launched ICE Co-Botics - the industry’s first comprehensive range of autonomous floor cleaning machines. Now here we are 12 months on, and we couldn’t have imagined how well the range would be received and adopted - we now have well over 100 Co-Bots deployed in a multitude of environments. It hasn’t been an easy road, but with a decade of experience and a tried and tested method, ICE now has the platform to educate and prove that automation isn’t about replacing operatives - it is about redeploying

And we are really seeing how the introduction of Co-Botics is benefiting facilities both from a cleaning and a cost saving perspective. Airports across the UK have introduced Co-Botic equipment into their daily cleaning operations which has hugely contributed to providing a safe travel experience and means that passengers and staff can be confident of the utmost cleanliness and hygiene levels throughout the airports. But it’s not only airports in the transport sector that have benefited from introducing autonomous cleaning equipment. Train stations across the UK have integrated robotic sanitising machines into their cleaning operations as part of a drive to re-instil confidence in rail travel, particularly in large cities.

Businesses looking to save time and money without reducing effectiveness have noticed the enhanced benefits of scrubber dryers and their added features - features such as onboard side scrubbing decks enable businesses to spend on one product for a range of cleaning solutions. Side scrubbing decks, such as those found on the B 110, extend a further 10 centimetres from the scrubber dryer allowing users to get closer to the surfaces they are cleaning, such as walls or shelves . This allows users to clean multiple surfaces at once, removing the need to manually rework them.
