Sustainable Cleaning

It’s important to look ‘beyond the checklist’ when it comes to washroom cleaning, as more needs to be done to eradicate harmful bacteria that can build up over time on high touch-point areas. This feature looks at new technology and systems designed to ensure a clean, odour-free washroom environment.

The Manchester Cleaning Show returns on 6 and 7 April at its new, easily accessible venue, Manchester Central. More details inside.

EDITOR’S LETTER C&M

Positive results from a challenging few years I came across a report published by Robert Scott this month, revealing the findings of its latest customer research and identifying what it believes will be the key trends dominating the cleaning and hygiene sectors during the year ahead. Of all the findings – which centred around reducing plastic waste, green cleaning and an increased visibility and frequency of cleaning in public places – the part that particularly caught my eye dealt with the greatest challenges faced by businesses during the past two years. Given what we’ve been through, you would be excused for thinking that COVID-19 would be way out on top of the list. But no. The research showed that supply chain disruption had had a far greater impact on businesses than COVID-19, with an overwhelming 60% of businesses confirming this. In fact, only a third (33%) of businesses stated that COVID-19 had been the key disruptor. Robert Scott’s sales director, Alastair Scott, explained: “Last year, we faced a number of supply chain challenges that created something of a perfect storm for our sector - and we weren’t alone. We dealt with these challenges in a number of ways, increasing our stock holding capacity and introducing customers to alternative products that were available or manufactured here in the UK to mitigate the delays caused by Brexit on importing goods. In turn, this led to some interesting shifts in our customers’ behaviour, with businesses opting for more reusable and sustainably manufactured products that reduced the volume of waste from disposable products we saw at the start of the pandemic. This contributed to the huge shift towards sustainability that we’ve seen, along with a number of other factors including the outcomes of the COP26 conference and changing legislation such as the incoming Plastic Packaging Tax in the UK. We see this as a really positive step

forwards – particularly in the cleaning sector for which, while some businesses have made sustainability a priority, there are still many areas that can be improved using the latest product innovation and technology available. As a manufacturer, one area we’re exploring is alternative packaging for our products that will support our business’ targets for reducing plastic waste.” Whilst the ongoing impact of COVID-19 might remain with the sector for longer, the result of supply chain issues should bring two positive results – a greater focus on British-made products, and a greater focus on sustainability. Changing the subject, and looking ahead to an opportunity to celebrate all that is great about our sector, the team at C&M and the Cleaning Show look forward to bringing everyone together again for the Manchester Cleaning Show on 6 and 7 April 2022 (please see Page 16). Registration is free of charge – please visit: www.cleaningshow.co.uk/manchester. Across the exhibit floor and within the two-day, free-to-attend conference, sustainability and the use of technology within cleaning and hygiene will be a key focus – don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about the latest solutions to the challenges faced by cleaning operatives in a post-pandemic world. I wish you a clean, tidy and healthy month ahead.

Robert Scott research reveals cleaning trends for 2022 ROBERT Scott has revealed the findings of its latest customer research, identifying the key trends that will dominate the cleaning and hygiene sector in 2022. The three biggest trends identified by the research were reducing plastic waste, green cleaning and increased visibility and frequency of cleaning, all of which are predicted to influence the cleaning practices used by businesses in 2022 and beyond. Looking at ‘green’ cleaning, Robert Scott’s research found three key areas that businesses believe to be of greatest importance to improving sustainability. These are reducing plastic waste (75%), using products made from recycled materials (60%) and implementing more reusable products into cleaning regimes (55%). A roadmap to sustainability Climate change is a huge threat to our planet. Aware of our responsibility to contribute, the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) and the Cleaning and Support Services Association (CSSA) are developing a ‘roadmap to sustainability’. A JOB WORTH DOING - A CONTRACTOR’S BLOG C&M

ESG - what does it all mean? Jeff Silver, head of sustainability and CSR at DOC Cleaning, reports. IT can’t have escaped anyone’s attention that environmental and social governance (ESG) has moved right up the agenda since COP26. As a nation, we are being asked to look at sustainability in the wider context. How can we limit the impact of global warming, achieve the target of ‘net zero’ by 2050 and, all the while, support people across the globe who need help and advice to make a better life for themselves and their families? In the cleaning industry we are already playing our part in the campaign, and in a way that reflects our customers’ demands for greener products and for greater commitment to sustainability and social value amongst service providers. In my current role I recently had the pleasure of attending, along with counterparts from other CSSA member companies, an exploratory meeting that is part of a CSSA initiative to improve ESG across the sector. Its aims are to look at ways we can work together to improve green and social credentials, raise the general profile of contractors and their employees, and position the cleaning industry as a place where people who value such commitment will want to work by choice. There is a real appetite across the membership to make it happen. At DOC we are continually evolving our environmental strategy as part of our ISO14001

certification, trying to understand where we are exposed to climate risks, where we are underexposed to the opportunity of going green, evaluating our carbon impact, and recording our carbon emissions, which we do as part of our Planet Mark accreditation. Like other contractors, we use cleaning products and methods that are safer for both environmental and human health and I don’t think we should forget, as an industry, just how important such eco-friendly cleaning systems are in reducing air and water pollution, as well as helping fight ozone depletion. And, of course, there’s so much more to do, as whilst there are the emerging technologies of chemical-free cleaning and machines that recycle water, we really need to see much more progress in microfibre to reduce the large amount of plastic particles contained in cloths. There are also the significant benefits to be obtained by embracing the 3-level waste hierarchy of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ - in other words reducing the consumption of cleaning products and chemicals, reusing or repurposing items to limit waste and recycling to ensure less energy is spent in new manufacture. And last but not least there is the battle to change people’s entrenched perceptions of paper washroom consumables, altering users’ mindsets to be

comfortable with products that do not come in the traditional white colour that people expect! On the social side it is critical that, as contractors, we operate in ways that benefit society and protect people. Social sustainability means looking at how we treat employees and safeguard their wellbeing. Factors such as local employment, diversity and inclusion are vital, as well as making sure we pay a proper wage. Dare I say it, but tightness in the labour market is gradually nudging customers towards acknowledging that the Real Living Wage is the minimum now acceptable. At DOC we are working with specialist consultancy, JustOne, to map out clear goals and objectives in respect of the communities we impact as a business including, amongst other things, acting in the community by partnering responsibly with relevant charities and projects to ensure that local communities benefit from our company’s presence in the area. There’s no denying that ESG and sustainability have now become essential practice for businesses operating in the cleaning industry. Now is the time to adapt to new sustainable demands to become a greener industry of the future, bringing benefits to our business, customers, employees, and stakeholders. WWW.DOCCLEANING.COM

Recycling in the workplace The time to act is now in the global commitment to stop climate change. By recycling creatively with the support of industry specialists and ensuring your commitment extends to your supply chain, every business can make a difference. Nina Wyers, marketing and brand director at The Floorbrite Group, reports. INCREASINGLY individuals, governments, organisations, and businesses are focused on green solutions. With climate change being at the forefront of world leader’s agendas, the time for businesses to act is now. The global demand for energy is set to increase by 4.6% this year. Global warming of 1.5°C and 2°C will be exceeded this century unless business leaders and policymakers explore the actions they should be taking to help achieve a net-zero economy. What can companies do to support the global commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases? Recycling helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing energy consumption. Using recycled materials to make new products reduces the need for virgin materials. This avoids greenhouse gas emissions that would result from extracting or mining virgin materials. In 2015 The Floorbrite Group introduced its waste and environmental management division

In fact, the cleaning machines have recently secured the Green Seal Certification of Environmental Innovation, based on their reduced environmental toxicity, waste minimisation, use of verified environmentally preferable products, and conservation of energy and water. Business owners are increasingly demanding that their cleaning partners support their sustainable commitments by using products and processes that are kind to the environment. They understand that traditional practices are unsustainable. We as an industry must embrace this opportunity to transform the future of cleaning, invest in innovation and go green in 2022. 22 MARCH 2022

Smart sensors placed in washrooms and inside dispensers will allow cleaning staff to remotely monitor refill levels and visitor numbers via a smartphone or tablet. Whenever it becomes apparent that a particular cubicle has received extensive use or when a soap or paper dispenser is running low, the cleaner is able to target the relevant washrooms and focus only on those dispensers that need refilling. Maintaining washrooms is more than just a checklist Daniel Took, head of professional product marketing at Kärcher UK, reports on the importance of looking beyond a checklist when it comes to washroom cleaning, as more needs to be done to eradicate harmful bacteria that can build up over time on high touch-point areas. COVID-19 has shone the light on germ prone areas which is why deep washroom cleaning is essential to provide a hygienic environment free of dirt, grime and bacteria. High touch-point areas Changing rooms, sanitary areas and public toilets are frequented by many people, making them prone to the spread of germs and infection. Moisture and heat in these environments - along with organic substances such as flakes of skin and hair - aid the growth of microorganisms, creating a breeding ground. Regular cleaning of high touch point areas in line with facility regulations is a must. Toilet lids and seats should be treated with an all-purpose alcohol-based cleaner as acids can dissolve dye pigments and leave stains. Furniture such as benches and coat racks which

Making the right choices for a sustainable washroom Paul Mulready, marketing manager at Northwood Hygiene Products Ltd, explores how businesses can ensure that they are delivering effective washroom hygiene, without compromising on their commitments to sustainability. WITH the government ending advice to work from home and urging people back into offices, there’s a renewed focus on the importance of hygiene in washrooms. But with increased pressure to reduce our carbon footprint, how do washroom providers cope with an increased footfall in toilet facilities, whilst also making them more environmentally friendly? Following the COP26 international conference, sustainability is high on the agenda, with more offices looking to improve their energy efficiency. It’s important to demonstrate green credentials throughout the entire organisation, so washrooms need to be more

As part of the range, we wanted to create an additional system that ran parallel with our wall mounted dosing systems, one where the need for additional hardware wasn’t required. We called it Evolution 1000. Today, after many years, we are proud to announce the new name for Evolution 1000. We looked at the range and asked ourselves what makes this product so powerful and unique. The obvious answer was the superior cleaning power of each product within the range but, additionally, how easy it is to dose these products. This is why we’re proud to introduce the brand new Easidose range.” The new Easidose range comprises multi-surface cleaners and degreasers, floor cleaners, antibacterial bath and washroom cleaners, air fresheners, window and stainless-steel cleaners, and toilet cleaners.
