The World’s Number One Pressure Washer Brand. In collaboration with the USA’s National Park Service, Kärcher undertook the monumental task of cleaning the Presidents’ heads on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. For decades, our pressure washers have been helping our customers to clean their vehicles, buildings, tools and equipment – as well as some more unconventional objects and places. Innovation remains at the heart of what we do and we’ve been continuously refining our pressure washers for years to deliver increased performance, less consumption, longer service life and shorter cleaning times. Don’t waste the opportunity - start 2018 with a clean recycling slate Many New Year’s resolutions often quickly fall by the wayside - gym membership ership and dry January to name just a couple. By taking time to think ahead, however, ever, one New Year’s resolution can make a difference for months (and even years) rs) to come. And it isn’t even very difficult. Steve Hill, head of sales at Grundon Waste Management, explains more about planning for better waste management. t.

The post-Christmas and New Year period can often be a challenging one as we take stock of the highs and lows of the last year, while wondering what the next 12 months will bring. Hopefully prosperity in the shape of new orders and contracts, improved relationships with both customers and suppliers and, as Brexit gets another year closer, more stability in both government and financial worlds would be a bonus. Some of these we can influence and others we can’t, but there is one big business benefit where we can all make a difference - and that’s in more efficient and effective waste management. January is always a good time to take stock of all your different waste streams, review your procedures and consider how better planning could deliver real benefits to both your financial bottom line and your

environmental credentials. There are plenty of tips and advice in this article and I think the biggest message I’d like everyone to take on board is that it doesn’t have to be difficult to embrace good waste management, providing you work with the right supplier. No surprise there, I hear you say, but it really is critical and here’s one of the reasons why. We know waste disposal often becomes more complicated as a business expands. Where there might have been one supplier collecting paper and cardboard, another may have been taken on to take away confidential waste, a third to manage general waste…and so on. From our experience, one of the most significant benefits of working with just one specialist provider who can handle all different waste streams is that you have a dedicated point of contact who understands your business and can

kettles need specialist disposal. We also help organisations plan ahead by providing industrial cleaning services. Many in-depth cleaning activities can only be undertaken during company shutdowns and our industrial cleaning team has years of experience and expertise. really help you drive change forward. They will take time to get to know you, identify new opportunities and really add value to your operation. They will help you design a bespoke collection service, ensuring that the frequency of collection matches the volumes of waste your company produces. They can also help to reduce contamination and improve segregation, supplying the right containers and bins to make life simple for your employees. Ideally, look for a provider that has an Energy from Waste (EfW) facility for the treatment of non-recyclable waste and an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plant for the treatment of organic or food waste, both of which process waste to generate renewable electricity for the National Grid. Depending on your area of business, you may also need a supplier that can handle more specialist materials, such as hazardous waste, clinical waste or WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment). Grundon’s Haz-Box is perfect for small volumes of hazardous waste items, such as aerosols, light bulbs and printer cartridges, while electrical items such as new computers or even

bulk collections. So remember, there’s a whole 12 months ahead to make a real difference. Think how much better you’ll feel when you look back next December and can be proud of what you’ve achieved in the recycling stakes. Key considerations Q Properly identify your waste with help from a reputable waste management company - you might find there are many more waste streams that can be reprocessed or recycled than you thought. Q Consider moving all your waste management requirements under the umbrella of one supplier - this will help simplify communication channels, avoid duplication and give you one point of contact for everything from collections to billing and reporting. Q Develop an effective waste management strategy and set yourself tangible waste management goals - are you concerned about diverting waste from landfill or is it more about reducing waste at source? Make sure your waste management supplier understands these and does everything it can to help you achieve them. Q Staying on top of waste disposal legislation is critical and the rules can be complicated - make sure you employ waste experts who will keep you ahead of the game. Q Education and communication - these two are key to ensuring employees support your initiative. They need to understand the whys and wherefores of recycling, so look for a company which can help spread the message at all levels, often through poster campaigns or waste awareness days. Q Ask for data - being able to monitor your achievements is essential, both for directors to understand the benefits of their investment in good waste management and also so staff can see the improvements they are helping to implement. Q Be proud of your successes and share them far and wide.

Top tips For best results, we advise operators to follow these tips: Q Move the machine or wand slowly over the carpet while spraying the solution.

N.Cap and its role in healthcare environments

Q Bear in mind that the rate of cleaning will depend upon the thickness of the carpet and the degree of dirt in the area being cleaned. Q There is no need to apply downward pressure with the wand. Q Working in overlapping strips helps ensure an even result. Q Clean an area about 1m square before the second, vacuum-only pass.

Howard O’Brien, managing director of Traffik UK Ltd, explains why the N.Cap carpet cleaning system has been endorsed and recommended by some of Europe’s leading carpet manufacturers and how the system can help save costs, maintain the lifetime of carpeting, and help to protect carpets from bacterial infection, medical spillage and heavy footfall.

While neither disc nor orbital floor scrubbers are new to the cleaning industry, the systems that control and regulate water usage as well as the technologies that power the scrub deck itself continue to evolve to improve cleanliness, safety, sustainability, and operator productivity. Using excess water when scrubbing is simply wasteful and presents a safety hazard. And using too much chemical is environmentally unsound. Having to make multiple passes and repeatedly stop to dump and fill a solution or recovery tank is time-consuming. But today’s more advanced scrubbing technologies allow the operator to automatically switch between chemical-free, water-only, or varying degrees of detergent use; change down pressure; change flow rates based on machine speed; and rotate an entire orbital scrub deck. As a result,

and development, and Selden prides itself on producing bespoke formulations for precise customer needs, whilst maintaining cost effectiveness and reduced environmental impact. The drive for better, safer cleaning chemicals gives Selden an edge in the market, as the whole process is one of continual innovation to keep pace with viruses and bacteria that are constantly evolving. But safer chemicals can bring many other advantages. The people on the front line, the cleaning operatives, are now safer than they’ve ever been due to the less harmful products they have to work with every day. Modern cleaning chemicals and methods have led to huge improvements in indoor air quality, meaning buildings can be cleaned during the day. This is hugely beneficial in schools, hospitals and care homes, for instance, as the risk of infections spreading can be minimised as they can be cleaned regularly during busy periods. But deadly organisms and bacteria such as MRSA, C. diff, Norovirus, and CRE that have plagued hospitals in recent years could quite easily return, and so it is a constant battle to stay ahead of the game. That is why Selden is continually researching and developing new products to meet the ever changing need. It is an ongoing challenge as it is essential the public is protected from bacteria and other micro-organisms, many of which lurk beyond the human eye. Cleaning operatives need the right training, and they need to know how to use the correct product in the right dose, to keep buildings and public spaces not only clean, but also properly sanitised. The work done in Selden’s lab is just the start of getting the process right. The company then tests its products in its ‘wet laboratory’ in real-life situations. There is a barista machine, a commercial dishwasher, glasswasher, two laundry machines, and a bank of urinals. The whole ethos is geared to understanding how products are used every day, and by constantly testing and refining its processes it means customers get the very latest cutting edge products that are both effective and cost effective. Mark Woodhead concluded: “Selden’s milestone 50th year will be marked by the expansion at its headquarters enabling it to remain at the cutting edge of the manufacture and delivery of professional cleaning and hygiene chemicals. That’s great news for FM managers in the catering, education, contract cleaning, and laundry sectors who are increasingly turning to Selden for their cleaning and hygiene needs.” WWW.SELDEN.CO.UK

IN the long gone days of the ladder and squeegee, window

Portage – de-mountable Reach & Wash

cleaning was a task that most cleaning contractors preferred to sub-contract rather than assume the inherent safety risks themselves. All that changed when the Reach & Wash system transformed the way windows are cleaned, removing the risk of falls from height. The attraction of working up to 65ft from the safety of the ground created the opportunity for many cleaning contractors to take control of window cleaning services

and retain more profit for their businesses. For many, however, one major drawback has always been the need to dedicate a van full time for window cleaning duties. For safety reasons a vehicle-mounted Reach & Wash system has to be securely bolted to the vehicle chassis. Tanks containing sufficient purified water for a whole day of window cleaning are very heavy and must be properly secured if death or serious injuries are to be avoided. In fact, an incident was reported within the last month where a young window cleaner lost his life when, involved in a RTA, he was crushed by the water tank he apparently installed himself. Ionic Systems has been approached many times by cleaning companies asking for a de-mountable Reach & Wash system for window cleaning so that users could retain flexibility in their vehicles for other duties. Developing a de-mountable system that can be quickly and simply installed and removed whilst also being compact for storage between uses was technically challenging. However, after studying Thatcham crash test data from its 2003 crash test programme, Ionic came up with the solution (patents pending). Launched in September this year, Ionic’s new Portage de-mountable Reach & Wash system is available in three capacity sizes - 400, 600 and 800 litres. Whether you have a part time or full time window cleaning requirement, the demountable Portage system gives you the freedom to use your van for other business or recreational uses. Portage is available in a wide range of options, with or without water treatment. Prices start from just over £2000 +vat, and the tank comes with a 10 year anti perforation warranty. For a free on-site demonstration please call 01793 871380 and ask for Patrick. WWW.IONICSYSTEMS.COM

SPINACLEAN has introduced the next generation ‘Elite’ gutter cleaning poles. According to the company, the clamped poles have the lightest weight to size ratio in the gutter cleaning market. Made from advanced carbon fibre material, the poles have improved rigidity, especially at 40ft from the ground. Joined together using a parallel joint and quick release clamp, the poles are 15% wider,

yet 5% lighter - improving productivity. Spinaclean is also launching what it claims to be the world’s first internal telescopic high-level cleaning pole. Made from light and durable carbon fibre, the allin-one pole can reach up to 18ft. Standing less than 5.5ft closed, the lightweight pole is easy to transport. Ideal for cleaning a range of internal environments, the universal pole is compatible with all major branded vacuum cleaners. WWW.SPINACLEAN.COM

CHRIS North, sales director of DBS Energy, explains why the battery technology powering your cleaning equipment is

Bringing the power

evolving. The performance of your cleaning equipment is the platform on which the success of your operation is judged. However, for a truly effective job, these machines require uninterrupted operation. Fast charge options and the right battery mean that cleaning machines can now be in use for longer, work harder and, when it comes to recharging, recharge more efficiently. When it comes to batteries, cleaning companies and equipment manufacturers need to make sure that they know what they’re buying. The key to buying the right battery - one that will deliver reliable power for the uninterrupted operation of your floor cleaning equipment - is to consider the size, charging capabilities and model. There are many AGM (absorbent glass mat), gel and flooded technology batteries on the market but we’re finding that people are moving away from flooded technology, for good reasons. Indeed, many places - such as Heathrow Airport - are stipulating AGM or gel batteries for their industrial equipment because of the health and safety considerations. A conventional flooded unit needs to be maintained, topped up and, if the operator overfills, can get messy with spillages. With AGM or gel models, the operator is in total control of charging. DBS Energy is one of the UK’s leading independent battery specialists. Its operations are backed by over 100 years of collective experience in the battery industry and we strongly recommend that everyone should be using sealed unit, maintenance-free batteries for higher, longer-lasting performance, and to meet all of the latest health and safety guidelines.
