FROM THE DESK OF Tawana Blassingame Founder & Editor in Chief

Welcome to the October 2020 issue of Queen Size Magazine. Where are you in life? I don’t know about you all, but this year has really put some things into perspective for me. I have experienced some emotions that I never felt before. Sure, I’ve been sad before, angry, been anxious; but these emotions were deep. They had me thinking about myself as I am getting older. I didn’t want to mention the dreaded D (death) word, but yea I have been thinking about that too. I also found myself praying more. These emotions came from mourning the death of people close to me, living through this unknown pandemic and even just turning a year older. Often times life has this very weird way of reminding us to LIVE before it’s too late. Today (as I am typing this) I was reminded to do just that. I read about the passing of Chadwick Boseman, and learning about all that he’d pushed through. The world had no idea that he was diagnosed with cancer and still managed to show up for himself. He LIVED until he died. And that is what I want for all of you reading this and beyond. Life is going to deal us some shitty hands. We are going to experience some things. But as long as you are alive, you should LIVE! Thank you all for continuing to support Queen Size Magazine. We would love to hear your feedback. Email us at queensizemagazine@gmail.com and let us know what you like, don’t like and/or want to see in future issues. We value your opinion. Be blessed and remember to be a blessing as well.

FIND PEACE DURING PANDEMIC UNCERTAINTY WITH KUNDALINI YOGA AND MEDITATION

The COVID-19 pandemic has made the world far more uncertain. It’s impacted our work and finances, our relationships, and of course, our physical and mental health. Finding the sense of surety we all crave is almost impossible, which leads to stress, anxiety and powerlessness that drains us emotionally. These feelings of helplessness can be traumatic, putting our body and mind in a constant “flight or fight” state. Staying in this tense state for too long not only hurts our quality of life but makes our immune systems more vulnerable. It’s important to recognize that this stress is a natural response to what’s happening in

the world. After being gentle with ourselves, we also need to find a self-care routine that treats both the body and the mind, helping us to break the cycle of endless “what-ifs” about tomorrow’s challenges. There are plenty of ways to cope with anxiety from uncertainty. Exercise, meditation and breathing techniques have all been proven to mitigate stress. Recently, however, health care professionals, researchers and practitioners are finding consensus around an activity that combines these three techniques into a powerful tool for regulating emotions and managing stress - Kundalini Yoga.

FIND PEACE DURING PANDEMIC| BRANDPOINT HOW KUNDALINI YOGA CAN HELP Kundalini Yoga is an ancient practice that incorporates movement, dynamic breathing techniques, meditation and mantras to channel your body’s energy. While most forms of exercise produce the endorphins that make you feel better, Kundalini Yoga also releases the tension and anxiety that builds up over time in your body’s glands and nerves. It resets your stress response so that you can achieve an internal biochemistry of calm, balance and depth of self. This is supported by a growing body of evidence indicating that contemplative practices such as yoga and meditation are effective at treating anxiety. In one recent study, researchers from Harvard Medical School, Boston University and the Sundari Satnam Kundalini Yoga Center compared Kundalini Yoga with common cognitive treatments in reducing symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. Those who were treated with yoga had lower relative levels of anxiety and had a decrease in physical symptoms compared to traditional treatments. START YOUR PRACTICE AT HOME One of the many beautiful aspects of yoga is that it requires no special equipment - though a yoga mat is helpful - so there’s nothing to stop you from practicing Kundalini Yoga in your living room. Training with a qualified Kundalini instructor will eventually be necessary to learn proper form, but there are plenty of techniques you can easily perform on your own that will help you to cope with the uncertainty of the pandemic. Try this Kundalini meditation at home whenever you feel worried or anxious. Choose a peaceful surrounding, inside or outside. You can have soft music playing to enhance your sense of peace. * Sit in Easy Pose. * Sit on the floor. You can use a pillow or cushion for comfort. * Cross your legs in front of you in a comfortable and relaxed way. * If you are uncomfortable sitting on floor you

can sit in a chair with your legs uncrossed and your feet flat on the ground. * Place your hands on your knees, palms down, close your eyes and observe the sensations of your body and mind. * Place your hands on the center of your chest at heart level. * Begin by resting the back of your left hand in the palm of your right hand. * Gently grab your left hand with your right, so that your right thumb is nestled in your left palm. * Cross your left thumb over your right. * Curve the fingers of your right hand around the outside of your left hand and hold it gently with the four fingers of the left hand remaining straight. * Bring your hands to your heart center, resting them against your chest. * With eyes closed, inhale deeply and relax. Breathe slowly for 10-30 minutes. * In daily life we typically breathe 15 times a minute. Try slowing down to 4 breaths per minute by inhaling to the count of 10 and exhaling to the count of 10. A slow breath will slow your heartbeat, reduce your stress response, and give you a peaceful, secure feeling. * Your mind will begin with a lot of “chatter” and anxiety. That is normal! Don’t try to suppress your thoughts, let them come and go until your mind is peaceful. If you have a particularly persistent thought, try naming it. Say to yourself, “This is my worry about my son,” for example. And let it go. * It is difficult at first, but if you do this breathing technique regularly you will find that your mind will welcome the silence and will start to relax. Soon, you will build the habit and the capacity to keep your mind calm in challenging environments. QMS: Many people don’t know that I have named you Supermodel, but they are going to soon find out why. But before we break ground and begin digging all up in your business (lol) tell us about Onzetta and all that you do. Onzetta: First, I’m completely flattered that you refer to me as a Supermodel (giggling and blushing). I’m a wife of 25 yrs. and 29 yrs. together, mother of four, and grandmother (Mimi) of one awesome grandson. I work full time at a fortune 500 aerospace company as a Technical Designer. I have to say God created me with several talents/gifts and I’ve made it my mission to tap into all of them. I once heard someone say, “There’s one place that’s full of unwritten songs, unwritten books, and unspoken words and that’s the cemetery”. I want to leave this earth empty, knowing that I’ve done all that God has charged me to do. I’m a singer, actress, makeup artist, fashion stylist, and a self-proclaimed wigologist (lol). QSM: WAIT! You sing too? I don’t know that I knew that part. And you out here singing with some “heavy hitters” too. Have you ever thought to take it all the way? Go professional and drop some albums? Onzetta: (lol) Yes, I’m a singer that’s my FIRST love and I’ve sung my entire life. My grandparents had 14 children and my grandfather was a Bishop and founder of his own church. My mother and most of my aunts and uncles were singers and musicians. I’ll say singing is pretty much in my DNA. My church had afforded me the opportunity to sing background for some legendary gospel artists Tramaine Hawkins and Kirby Brown to name a few. I love singing background more than I love being a soloist. So, I’ve never thought about doing my own album, but I have recorded as a background singer for other artists. My church recorded an album several years ago and I did lead on a song as well as background. QSM: You mentioned that you are a Technical Designer by trade. What exactly is a Technical Designer? Onzetta: I create 2D engineering drawings

13

and 3D models of the interior and exterior of business jets. I work closely with engineering while supporting the sales team on the design and build of an aircraft. I create drawings as a visual, so the customer knows what he/she is receiving. QSM: Tell us what piqued our interest for modeling. Onzetta: What piqued my interest in modeling was people. I’ve always had a love for fashion and makeup, so I would get all snazzy from time to time. People would always actually ask me was I a model and I’d say no. One day I saw on Facebook a classmate from high school that lives in Atlanta, Ga. modeling. I contacted her to see how she got started and just so happen the agency she was modeling for was having a casting call. I went and that was the start of my modeling journey. QSM: Congratulations on your successful health and wellness journey. Being that you have ranged in sizes I feel like you can answer this question best. What three stores and or designers do you feel cater to the needs of the plus size woman best? Onzetta: I’ve been on my weight loss journey for a year now. I’ve loss 30 lbs. so far and my goal is 40 lbs. I’ve changed my eating habits by eating little to no fast food. I try to cook more rather than eat fast food. I exercise 3-4 days per week, but I’ve hit the wall of not losing weight. I’ve now increased my workout to 5-6 days per week. I work out with a great trainer Tanieshala Hall at Get That Body Dance and Fitness in Savannah, Ga. I love to shop at Ashley Stewart and Torrid. As a model, I have the advantage I believe for modeling for some amazing designers and boutique owners. I can contact either of them when I’m looking for a specific piece. I’ve modeled for man amazing designer for many years by the name of Norahs Khan her line of clothing is called Dare To Be Distinctive she’s my go to designer for original pieces.

the viewers’ attention. I mean no disrespect in that statement…BUT!!! I want my photos to look like art. I achieve that by utilizing the space I’m modeling in, modeling from head to toe, being conscious of what my body is doing, and being conscious of the camera. QSM: You are also a makeup artist. How long have you been doing makeup? Onzzetta: I’ve been doing makeup for many years on myself. Once I got into modeling and doing fashion shows other models would ask me to do their makeup for shows. And it just evolved from there. Yes, I’ve opened my own business as a makeup artist just a few months ago. I’m grateful I stay booked every weekend since my launch of Makeup by O Cre8ative Glam & Pro Stylings. I’ve turned one of my bedrooms into my studio where I transform women from OH to BeYOUtiful. I offer different makeup looks, styling, and photoshoots. I wanted to create a space where I can give women the opportunity for me to glam them up and make them feel like a Supermodel for the day. I also use the time to help build confidence in my clients that they are beautiful with or without makeup. It is so rewarding when a client leaves feeling like you, “CAN’T TELL HER NOTHING”. (lol)

QSM: You have a very unique style that I love about you. You modeling range as far as looks and posing is impeccable. Where did you learn to be so versatile? Onzetta: First, thank you so much for loving my style and modeling. I believe my versatility and range comes from several different attributes. When I get in front of camera, I have no fear. What I mean is even at my heaviest weight I didn’t care what it took to get the shot. I never allowed my weight and/or size to limit me on how I USE my body in a shot. I believe some photographers feel like thin models can be more creative posing than plus/curvy models can. I’ve ALWAYS had a goal to disarm photographers of that thought. I’ve never been the type of model to rely on a pretty face, big hips, or big butt to capture

QSM: Let’s talk family. I enjoy watching your family pray together and really care for one another. That is extremely important. Is this what you experienced in your own family growing up? Onzetta: Yes, I grew up in a Pentecostal family a family full of preachers. As a matter of fact, I think my mother gave birth to me in church. (Lol) God and faith is a huge part of who I am and how I was brought up. My grandfather was a Bishop he founded the church I was raised in. My mother was saved my entire life. I grew up in a home where Shirley Caesar was playing throughout the house. My grandfather made us where skirts. Well, I didn’t have to, because I was the youngest, but my sisters and cousins had to. (Lol) My husband and I have raised our children with the same Christian beliefs and values. I have three sons 31 yrs. old, 25 yrs. old, 16 yrs. old, and one daughter 19 yrs. old.

QSM: We can’t talk about family without talking about Jason. Oh how the world loves Jason. For those that don’t know Jason, tell us about him. Onzetta: Jason is my youngest child. He was born with Sickle Cell disease from birth up until he was about 5 yrs. old, we were in and of the hospital due to the Sickle Cell. When he turned 6 yrs. old, because of the Sickle Cell the main arteries to his brain were swollen which made him high risk for strokes. The hematologists decided that he would need monthly blood transfusions to lessen his chance of having a stroke. April of 2016 the unthinkable happened at age 11 yrs. old he had two strokes one on both sides of his brain. This was devastating doctors told us that he wouldn’t live through the night. His brain was swelling at an alarming rate and he also had hemorrhaging on his brain. He spent three months in ICU on a ventilator and had several other health problems while in ICU. Doctors told us he wouldn’t have any quality of life that he would be a vegetable……BUT GOD!!!!! My husband quit his job and to this day has NEVER left Jason’s side. He’s Jason’s caretaker while I work and financially support the family. Jason is a miracle boy he’s one the strongest human beings that I know. He’s in a wheelchair he can move his right side and has paralysis on his left side, legally blind, with mental limitations. He requires 24 hr. care, so he has nurses and CNAs that also help us with his care. BUT he is the happiest kid you’ll ever meet, in his condition, the smartest kid also. When he began doing what doctors said he wouldn’t be able to do they stopped giving us prognosis. No one can ever tell me that God isn’t real I’ve watched him work in my son. I always tell people God didn’t stop horrible things from happening to Jason, but he did STOP DEATH. QSM: How has caring for Jason impacted your careers? How is he doing now? And what does your comeback look like? Onzetta: My husband gave up everything to stay home and care for Jason. He had a few years prior to Jason getting sick obtained his BA degree. He was working at the same company that I work to and the potential for promotions were high for him. Sometimes he feels like life is passing him by, because Jason’s care is complex. Not only do you have to care for him there’s also managing Jason’s care. He has at least eight doctors on his team, so they must be managed to make sure they’re keeping up with his care. He’s on a lot of medication so that needs managing,

WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|OCTOBER 2020 ISSUE

nurses, CNA’s etc. It’s a lot of work!!!! We can’t go anywhere together not unless we have a nurse to be at home with Jason. We haven’t had a date night in over 4 yrs. and no trips out of town. We heavily rely on God to get us all through this time and you know what God shows up on our behalf every day. We are a loving, happy, and goofy family!!!!(Lol) We couldn’t do any of what we do without God!!! My husband is currently studying to get his real-estate license and I’m currently building a brand. QSM: I am super proud of you. Keep up the good work. You have a fan for life over here! Please tell people where they can follow you and possibly book you. Onzetta: The final thing I want the world to know is that obstacles may slow you down, but don’t ever let them stop you. It took a lot of refocusing and re-planning on how to move forward with now a disabled child. I have four children, so I’m used to having a plan that’s what you have to do with a large family. When Jason took sick, I didn’t know which way was up or down our world was turned upside down. But my husband and I, decided we had to move forward we can’t let this stop us from living. Jason’s life depends on us LIVING!! We as people always look for God to work things OUT instead of allowing him to work WITHIN!!! Here’s how you can contact me. QSM: First of all, thank you for taking the time to do this interview. I enjoy watching you blossom. Give us some background on who Charity is outside of Fitness. Charity: Thank you so much for that. I’m really just a silly girl that likes to have a good time. I want to do things and be around people that make me laugh. I am always evolving. I work hard to maintain a brand. QSM: Have you always been so fit and chiseled? Lol Charity: No not at all. Being active was always in my routine via high school and college athletics. Chiseled never lol I didn’t get into weights and strength training right away I pretty much fought it. Then I had a trainer break it down to me and challenged me to just a month of weight training. It was then that I saw the difference. QSM: What does a day in the life of Charity look like? Charity: There will be some sort of physical activity whether it is from my workout hour or running errands on my bike. It will start with my virtual workout clients and then move on to hair appointments by late morning. My schedule doesn’t always allow me to get my movement in at the same time every day or the same location which is very key to me not getting bored with my workouts. I need my environment always changing. QSM: You are CEO of Curvy Chick Fitness and you are a celebrity Plus Size trainer. How did you get to where you are? Please tell us your background and how you got started in fitness and training? Charity: It definitely started from my own weight loss journey after losing Mommy. I didn’t have this amount of support when I started so creating a safe space where women can realistically go through this journey became a requirement over the years. Initially my now management MNS Media put my stories together and suggested I start teaching my way. We started to develop our ideas and made the best of every opportunity that was available. I also believe participating and coaching collegiate basketball has definitely played a role in my attitude towards health and wellness. I feel like my competitive edge is encouraging, not overwhelming. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|OCTOBER 2020 ISSUE

QSM: Tell us about Healthy Heart NY. Charity: It was a running event that I partnered up with Jack Rabbit Stores to bring attention to the process of getting the proper running shoe and the different levels of running as well as staying active. Each event involved a short run followed by press interviews for my guest host with refreshments and then a final live interview done by me. The guest host so far has been Super Bowl champs Brandon Marshall and Bernard Pierce, both played with the Denver Broncos, Love & Hip Hop NY stars Sofi Green and Samantha Wallace, 2nd Generation Wayans Summer Wayans, Project Runway Model Monique Nakia, Established Plus Model Samantha Lebbie, and Pariis Garcia, St. Johns Track Team, a Big East Conference Champion. QSM: With this global pandemic, you have been very active in pushing your health and awareness brand. Let’s talk about some of your concerns and why this is so important to you. Charity: I hate that statistically AfricanAmericans lead the way on the unhealthy spectrum. I just want to be one of the platforms that people can understand and help them along their journey to better health and wellness. If we are still dealing with a pandemic this winter, it will be rough on the urban community. Health & Wellness should be a way of life and not just survival. QSM: One of the things that I have heard from a few people who have been infected with COVID-19 was they believed that their recent weight loss or their health and wellness journey has helped in their recovery. What are your thoughts? Charity: I think this is a valid and realistic statement. By getting their eating habits in order along with more movement in daily routines are very much immune boosting side effects. Not to mention the Vitamin D that also plays a role. Keep finding ways to be outside and get some sun.

QSM: What are three vital tips that you could offer our readers regarding wellness and fitness? Charity: 1. Water, Water, Water. 2. Be careful of secret sugars that hide in processed foods and drinks. 3. Incorporate more fruits and vegetables in your daily meals. QSM: Can you share three essential exercises you suggest for all clients, and why? Charity: 1. Walking!! People underestimate the power of walking on a regular basis. 2. Strength Training. Getting a little strength training in can go a long way. Whether it is body weight moves or equipment, either will work. 3. Stretching can be done at any age and any level. The more you stretch the easier it becomes. QSM: What evaluations do you conduct with a new client who’s eager to begin a fitness regimen? Charity: I like to see how they speak about themselves. As soon as we begin communicating about working with each other I’m checking out their selftalk. So much of the journey starts with our mentality and the way we talk about food and weight loss. Our first work out is never too intense. I like to see how the client moves so that I can give them exercise and movement goals that will encourage them. QSM: Congratulations on the launch of your TV Show “What’s In Your Basket”. For our readers who have not checked it out, tell us what it’s all about and where/ when they can watch. Charity: Currently you can catch the episodes on my YouTube channel Curvy Chick Fitness and it will start airing on Xtreme Vibes TV/Roku in September 2020. The show is very much about my life and how I work with different people to achieve their goals. You will see me using and talking about some of the great products I received through sponsorship. But most importantly you will see the options and opportunities for the

busiest person to find a way to move and eat better. QSM: I little birdie told me that you also just opened your own hair studio. Share the tea on that. Charity: I diiiid! It is a private natural hair boutique. Specializing in natural hair care and protective styling. It took some time to see how the workouts and hair go together but they totally do. Hair was one of the things that kept me afloat in New York. Big ticket hair appointments came just in time on countless occasions. I feel like now I have created a brand with the knowledge I gained from Curvy Chick Fitness. Faith, Hope & Hair is dedicated to my Mom who passed away, because I feel her in every successful step I take. QSM: How do you balance life and all that you do? Do you have a daily routine for YOU? Charity: Honestly, sometimes I don’t even know how I do it. I like to start my day with guided mediation and my own workout that often comes in different order but feel at my best when those two things happen on a regular basis. My routine varies and is always changing. Hair appointments are always all over the place because I take early and late appointments. Even workouts change a lot when I work with influencers or people with demanding schedules. But I actually love the craziness of my life. It keeps me on my toes and never complacent. QSM: What have been some of your biggest lessons so far in life? Charity: It’s ok to put your happiness and wellbeing above someone else’s. Sacrifices do pay off. Keep your intentions pure and also to always plug my social media pages which are @ CurvyChickFitnessOfficial on Instagram and Curvy Chick Fitness on Facebook. (LOL) I also want to take a minute to thank Queen Size Magazine for the passion you put into this business and the voice you give our plus size community.

How many of us have heard the term, “Food is good for the soul”? Well, that may be true, but I like to say “Confidence is good for the soul”! The last six months or so have been really tough on most of us, and our focus may have often shifted to survival over self-care, which is completely understandable, but we can’t forget our own needs. Remember “self-care, is not selfish”! Fashion is such a major part of everything around us, and that includes the wellness level of our mind, body, and souls. Covid-19 has had most of us in lounge wear for most of 2020, and a ton of us have picked up what we now know as the “Quarantine 15”, but we must remember how super important it is to love ourselves at every level of our journey. We have to know that it’s okay to want to appreciate where we are at this very moment, mid pandemic, while being completely comfortable and confident enough to focus on where we want to go. Self-love and body positivity include loving what we currently see as well as embracing improvements that we will benefit from, and that’s what promotes real confidence. We have about a month left of Summer and it is time to get out of the lounge wear, no matter how many pounds we may have gained. Some of us are back to work, never stopped working, or are looking for work, so let’s make time to feed our minds, bodies, and souls with a little fashion for a great pick-me-up!!! Great fashion makes everyone feel good and confident, so I like to use that as ways to get and keep me going. I also love great fashion on a budget, so keep that as a priority especially during these times. We may not be going on all of the trips we had planned, but nothing stops a great hotel staycation or a dip at your friend’s pool, while practicing social distancing of course. So, pull up the hottest swimwear still on sale and make it to your nearest pool to get your fix of vitamin D!!! We have seen some amazing one- and two-piece suits from all of our favorite brands. Don’t want to swim? Grab your favorite athletic wear and go out for a nice brisk walk or jog to take in the fresh air, and get that heart rate up. The season has brought some of the best athletic pieces, because brands know we all want to tackle our “quarantine 15” to kick Covid-19 right in the face!!! Loving yourself right where you are and appreciating your journey to health and wellness is super important and we have to give ourselves a break. Confidence is when we are comfortable being exactly who we are, wearing what we want to wear, and doing exactly what we want to do without regret. The way we do things in the fashion industry may have changed, but fashion as a vehicle to improve our way of life has not. Let’s get online and support our favorite brands, take a trip masked up to your favorite local store, or even did beyond the lounge wear in these closets, and treat yourself to something that will get you out of your pj’s and the house. Let some fashionable pieces along with a booming self-confidence, help you take the last months of 2020 to focus on a mind, body and soul type of wellness!! Personally, having a healthy mind, body and soul type of wellness is treating your body like the temple it is and embracing everything God has blessed you with. As Women, we tend to downplay our bodies because we don’t feel like we have the “ideal” body. However, we need to embrace what we have, work it, love every inch on ourselves, and have the confidence like no other while doing so. WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM| OCTOBER 2020 ISSUE

Loving myself at every step of the way means..... Making sure that I am healthy mentally and physically. It is very important to make sure that you are in a happy place with yourself. If you are happy with yourself then it shows through in the way you carry yourself. Secondly, if you love yourself you take care of yourself physically as well. I use to be big into fitness and staying in shape, but life happened and stress happened. I gained weight and no longer felt beautiful. But recently, I decided to make a change. Instead of talking about how I wish I was in shape I decided to do something about it. I found that walking at least 30 minutes a day not only helps me physically but also helps me mentally. So I am learning to love myself again more and more each day.

I am a firm believer in holistic health. Meaning health of the mind, body, and spirit. Having all three aligned is very important. Knowing when to take time for yourself and work on yourself improvement are key. Sometime you have to be a little selfish and take the time to seclude yourself to order your thoughts and feelings, work on your physical gains and losses, and definitely check in with GOD or your higher power for direction and clarity of your purpose. When you work in these three areas, you usually find that they all fit together and balance each other out to make you such a wellrounded person. So, take the time to go out in nature, meditate, raise your energies and vibrations, focus on your manifestations and affirmations, and seek wisdom.

The journey of loving yourself is not an easy one and can be an ongoing struggle that requires balance and self-reflection on a daily basis. It’s being able to adjust to life’s curves, manage stress, balance family with work and still make time for your needs both physically and spiritually.” Photographer | Alfred Beverly @charissolutionsphotography Model | Nichelle Thibodeaux @forever_nichelle Attire from @walmart

Haircare

with Nathaniel Jaye Hey hey hey!! Back like I never left; did you miss me? Of course, you did. So much has been going on but it’s so good to be slowly getting back to normal. I thought this would be a great time to do some Q &A. I get all these amazing questions in my DM that I often times don’t get an opportunity to respond to; no, I am not ignoring you , life just gets in the way. So, we thought it would be a great opportunity to do so now. So let’s jump right into it.

How often should I be washing my hair? Ideally in a normal world I would say weekly; however, life gets busy and every week is not always conducive. So, every two weeks Is just fine; especially if you are relaxed. Now as for my natural sisters and brothers shampooing your natural tresses every week can be a full day’s work. I suggest co-washing in between shampoos; at least with this you are able to rehydrate your curls and freshen your style up without stripping it of its oils. Moreover, I know a lot of you work out and sweat a lot in your hair; if you need to shampoo it more often that is totally fine. Just be sure to use the proper shampoo and conditioner that will keep your hair moisturized and not dry out.

For someone who wears braids a lot; how long is a safe duration to keep them in? In My professional opinion two months is max; but always give your scalp and hair a break in between. Wearing braids back to back may cause much damage to your scalp over time. Be sure you are deep conditioning once the braids have been removed. Even while you have the braids in you can some astringent and WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|OCTOBER 2020 ISSUE

cotton balls to clean your scalp from the oils, dirt and sweat build up.

I have natural hair, but it is not curly. How can I get the natural hairstyles without my hair just looking nappy? I think it’s so important that when going natural you know your curl pattern and what your hair can and can not do. Its A LOT of trial and error. I always suggest going to a natural hairstylist; whom is proficient in natural hair so that they may give you some ideas about how to care for it at home. I have come to realize that many women are using products wrong. Either they are overusing it or under using it. Normally the denser the hair the more product you need. Another mistake is that some women are not allowing their hair to fully dry; which causes the style to not take and it leaves it looking very frizzy and dry. Be sure that the products you are using do not have alcohol in them; alcohol does tend to dry the hair out a lot. Take your time and know that sometimes it will take a couple products for your hair to really respond in a positive way, pay attention to the ingredients that are in said products. Some products have a lot of fillers in them and less of the essentials oils your seeking.

HAIRCARE Q&A | NATHANIEL JAYE

I am getting married and I want to hire a hairstylist for myself and my bridal party of six,. does everyone need their own hairstylist? How many should I hire? Typically, the bride hires one hairstylist and that hairstylist may bring an assistant to help. In Some cases, the bride may hire her personal hairstylist to do her hair only and maybe contract another hairstylist to do the wedding party. Hiring six hairstylists can be a bit essessive and costly. Another option is that you can have the bridesmaids get their hair done by their own hairstylist the day before. Ultimately Its your wedding and you make the choices on how you want things to flow.

So my question is more on safety. What should I be looking for when I book my appointments? Other than is everyone wearing a mask. You should be looking to see how many clients are being serviced at the same time, are they social distancing like they should. Look for signs that have the salons safety protocol. Watch to see if they are properly sanitizing and disinfecting not only their stations and chairs but their tools as well. All of these things are so important to stop the spread of COVID-19 and to keep the salon safe from any other harms viruses and/or bacteria. Another great thing to lookout for do they have hand sanitizer stations set up in multiple areas in the salon. Bathrooms are a huge breeding ground for viruses; pay attention to how clean the bathrooms are, and do they have the proper antibacterial handwashing soap.

As someone with natural hair, I have always wondered about Keratin treatments. What exactly is that and can I say my hair is natural after getting the treatment? I personally have never done one; and I have heard many good and bad stories about the process and the aftermath. According to “The Cut” A keratin treatment is a chemical process that smooths and shines frizzy hair. Results can last up to six months. There are many different versions of the treatment that go by different names (Brazilian Blowout, Cezanne, Goldwell Kerasilk) and your hairstylist can customize a blend of the formula to suit

41

your needs. Some versions of the treat release formaldehyde when heated, but many newer versions are formaldehyde-free. No matter the formaldehyde content, on a basic level, keratin treatments dive into the hair follicle and inject porous areas with keratin, an essential hair protein. I strongly suggest doing your research and find a hairstylist whom is proficient in this process.

I have been perming my hair for the last ten years. Should I be worried about getting brain cancer? Although I am not a doctor and I can’t provide you with the numbers; there have been many studies done on both black and white women. Based on the research by “Medscape.com” A study of 4,285 women found a significant increase in breast cancer risk in black women who used dark shades of hair dye and in white women who used chemical hair relaxers. The risk of breast cancer was 51% higher in black women who reported using dark hair dye, compared with those who did not, and was 74% higher in white women who reported using chemical relaxers. Risk was more than doubled in whites who used both relaxers and hair dyes. I am sure more research will be conducted in the coming years; however, like anything else using relaxers is a risk and there is always a possibly that too much use of a chemical can have some adverse effects on the body.

Do you recommend a glue in weave or sew in? I do both and I love having options; both glue and sew in weaves have been given a bad name. Most of the time its due to user error and ladies leaving them in way too long. I have also come to realize that glue has latex in it and if you have a latex allergy then glue in weaves are NOT for you. Sew ins can be very beneficial as a protective style; but one must be mindful that getting sew ins back to back can have a negative effect on your hairline and the health of your scalp. Know when to take a break and let your scalp breath. GREAT questions; please Keep them coming ! as always following me on social media IG @ Hairbynathaniel_jaye. Love connecting with my readers. Until then be BOLD, be unique and be Fabulous.

JOHANNA OUTLAW AUTHOR MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER TRIATHLON ATHLETE

QSM: What made you start competing in triathlons? What were your family and friend’s reaction? Johanna: I kept hearing about this organization called TIFL (Tri It for Life) from fellow female runners. So when registration opened for the 2014 training season I signed up. I was actually travelling back home from finishing my 1st half marathon in the Outer Banks when the email went out that registration was open. I was in the passenger seat and registered myself and the driver for the training program. The other passenger in the car also registered for the program. My family was supportive of my decision to train for my first triathlon. My friends were also very supportive of the decision as well. As the race day approached, I kept friends aware of the day and a few came out to support. It meant so much to me to have friends with me to share in that achievement. QSM: Which part of the competition is your favorite? Why? Johanna: I would say it’s a tie for my favorite part. Swimming is probably my favorite part. I have always enjoyed swimming ever since I was kid. Training with TIFL helped me learn to swim better and to learn to breathe while swimming instead of holding my breath. That WWW.QUEENSIZEMAGAZINE.COM|OCTOBER 2020 ISSUE

was a MAJOR game changer. Cycling ties with swimming. Prior to training in 2014 I hadn’t been on a bicycle since I was a kid. Once I remembered how the whole process of riding a bike worked, I fell in love with cycling. I loved cycling downhill. I would lean into my bike and just FLY. Going uphill is a totally different process. I chug slow and steady like the little engine that could. I think I can. I think I can. QSM: What has been the most difficult part of the process? Johanna: The most difficult part was training to go between 2 of the 3 parts. We would do brick training which consists of performing 2 of the aspects of triathlon. Sunday we would have swim training and then bike training or we would have swim training and then run training. On Tuesday and Thursday we would have cycling training and then run training. This would allow your muscles to adjust to going from the pool and then to the bike and then to the pavement. This training is necessary to allow you to be prepared for those transitions on race day. This was very new for me as I had never done more than one sport at a time. I went from running to triathlon. This was a whole new ballgame for me.

INFLUENCER SPOTLIGHT | JOHANNA OUTLAW - BY JANELLE SIMMONS QSM: What has been your biggest accomplishment as a triathlete? Johanna: I would say that my biggest accomplishment as triathlete is finishing the race. It doesn’t matter how you start. What matters is the finish. Every time I cross that finish line I celebrate. QSM: You are currently on a brief hiatus; I’m assuming due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What are you doing to stay active? Johanna: You are correct COVID has put a damper on my exercise/training. I was planning for 2020 to be the year I complete my first open water swim race. Thanks to COVID those plans are being delayed to 2021. I will be perfectly honest my motivation to exercise has completely been lost due to COVID. PreCOVID I would be swimming at the gym on Monday at 5am with friends. I would get in at least 2 days of swimming, 1-2 days of cycling/ walking. I was slowly getting into a training routine that would prepare me for a triathlon. I have recently celebrated a birthday. That has made me aware that I need to get back on the exercise path. QSM: Your book The Power of the Turtle: Tales of Being Dead Last chronicles your journey as a triathlete. What prompted you to share your story? Johanna: Actually, it chronicles my entire athletic journey. It goes from starting a couch to 5K program, running 5Ks, running half marathons, completing triathlons, completing back to back half marathons within the course of one week to become a half fanatic. It was a suggestion of my best friend, Gregory AKA Tall Drink Clanton to write the book. I would always blog after a race and during my TRI training. He told me the way I write was great story telling and that I should write a book. I never even thought about writing a book. So, the idea was born there. I decided to go back to the beginning. The book chronicles my athletic journey from 2008-2016.

51

were walking. That is not the case. Athletes come in all shapes and sizes. Retailers have started to take notice as there is now athletic wear available in plus sizes for females; that wasn’t available say 10 years ago. I have had a desire to start a plus size athletic line that would include cycling and tri gear. There is still a need for plus size cycling and triathlon active wear in the retail market. Do you know of any investors? (smiles) QSM: What would you say to someone interested in triathlons? How should they get started? Johanna: I would say find you a triathlon group/program/trainer. It is much easier to train with a group or a trainer for accountability purposes. Check your local parks and recreation and gyms, YMCAs and health clubs. There are TRI groups everywhere. Of course, check the internet. I’m a part of one that has members located across the US. QSM: What’s next for you? Johanna: Getting back to a consistent exercise program. I only have one race planned for this year. Thanks, COVID (sad face) That is the Reggae Marathon 10K on December 6 in Negril, Jamaica. We shall see. I also have travel insurance in case the race does get cancelled. QSM: If you could describe your journey using one word, what would it be and why? Johanna: Adventure. I use adventure because it has never been a dull moment. There have been ups and downs. Having a great support system is also key to this journey. I have been a part of great training groups and programs here in the Raleigh area that have been essential to this journey.

QSM: Many will say you do not look like the traditional triathlete. How do you respond to those individuals? Johanna: I respond that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Society will have you believe that “an athlete” is someone who is Olympic bound and have been training since they

Play ball: Head to a nearby park and play soccer, basketball or baseball. Get competitive by selecting teams in advance and wearing matching colors to show your team spirit.

Sing-along: Using new technology, you can take your family singalong to the next level. Using a Casiotone keyboard, download favorite songs, print out the lyrics and have each family member sing a verse or two. You can even connect your phone to the keyboard to play music from your song library.

Game day: Rainy day? No problem. Let every family member pick a favorite board game and spend the day playing each one.

Now is the perfect time to get some fresh air and enjoy your family’s favorite outdoor activity. Finding the nearest fishing hole or picnic spot is easy with a timepiece that can help you navigate the terrain. For example, Pro Trek watches provide quad sensor technology that detects compass bearing, barometric pressure, altitude and temperature, plus an accelerometer for counting steps, all which can support your outdoor adventure. Learn a skill: From painting to pickling to Portuguese, there are a range of online classes available that can help your family master a new skill right from the comfort of home. Pick something fun to learn together and get started today.

Movie night: Create a movie theater in your backyard in an instant with a projector.
