Explorando la Inspiración, Personalizando el Diseño Entrevistado por / Interviewed by Mika Rakol El reconocido diseñador de interiores francés Eric Ledoigt habla con Qué Pasa sobre los materiales, la gente, el arte y la cultura que ofrecen inspiración para sus proyectos y los artículos únicos creados por su sala de exposición In Situ. ¿Cómo empezó usted en el área de diseño de interiores?

Antes de llegar a Guatemala, no había hecho muchos muebles y no había diseñado mucho.

Trabajaba en Relaciones Publicas, entre otros diseñadores. Empecé con los muebles en Guatemala durante un año mientras estaba viviendo en Río Dulce. Luego me trasladé a La Antigua y es donde descubrí algo que me fascinó y que me sigue fascinando, que son los artesanos de Guatemala. Luego seguí haciendo objetos, lámparas, muebles y poco a poco la gente me empezó a pedir que realizara cosas específicas para sus casas: diseño de puertas, muebles especiales para cierto ambiente de una casa, y eso me llevó a empezar a trabajar en diseño de interiores. No tengo ninguna formación académica, pero siento que es algo muy intuitivo. ¿Qué es lo que le fascina tanto con la madera?

Me gusta la flexibilidad del trabajo con la madera. Se puede tallar, pulir, ensamblar, trabajar textura; existen varias formas de trabajar la madera. Al principio tuve la suerte de trabajar con Miriam Zaror y Jorge Perroni, quienes tenían una de las mejores tiendas de decoración en La Antigua, la Casa Angelina, y ellos me enviaron a Petén para trabajar con toda la madera reciclada. Allí fue donde descubrí la variedad de esencias tropicales, la belleza de estas maderas que muy poco se conocen todavía. Está el ciricote, el jobillo, el jocote fraile, o el rosul. [Respectivamente: Cordia dodecandra, Phyllanthus acuminatus, Astronium graveolens, y Karwinskia calderonii.]

En la actualidad la madera de conacaste es la que más trabajo. Es una madera que tiene una veta extraordinaria muy marcada y que se puede conseguir en formatos muy grandes en Guatemala. Lo lamentable es

que no es una madera de bosque manejado. Entonces solo se puede conseguir de árboles caídos. Por supuesto, también usamos madera de bosques sostenibles en las que podemos encontrar palo blanco, cedro, y caoba. ¿Cuáles son los proyectos de decoración que más le gustan?

An Interview with Eric Ledoigt Exploring Inspiration, Personalizing Design Renowned French interior designer Eric Ledoigt talks with Qué Pasa about the materials, people, art and culture that provide inspiration for his projects and the unique items created for his showroom In Situ.

How did you get started with interior design?

Before arriving in Guatemala, I hadn’t made a lot of furniture and hadn’t done much design.

I worked in Public Relations, among others designers. I started the furniture while I was in Guatemala for a year living in Río Dulce.

Then I went to La Antigua and that’s where I discovered something that fascinated me and continues to fascinate me: the artisans of Guatemala. Then I continued making objects, lamps, furniture, and slowly people started to ask me to do specific things for their homes: designing doors and special furniture for a certain room of a house, and that led me to start working on interior design. I have no formal training, but I feel it’s very intuitive.

What is it about wood that fascinates you so much?

I like the flexibility of the working with wood.

It can be cut, polished, assembled, the texture can be changed, there are several forms of woodworking. At the beginning, I was fortunate to work with Miriam Zaror and Jorge Perroni, who had one of the best decor shops in La Antigua, the Casa Angelina, and they sent me to Petén to work with recycled wood. That’s where I discovered the variety of tropical essences, the beauty of these woods that are still very little known; for example, there are ziricote, jobillo, jocote fraile and rosul woods. [Respectively: Cordia dodecandra, Phyllanthus acuminatus, Astronium graveolens, and Karwinskia calderonii.]

Nowadays I do most of my work with conacaste wood [Enterolobium cyclocarpum].

It’s a wood that has an extraordinary strong grain and can be obtained in very large formats in Guatemala. The unfortunate thing is that it is not a wood from managed forests. So it can only be gotten from fallen trees. Of course, we also use wood from sustainable forests such as palo blanco [Calycophyllum multiflorum], cedar, and mahogany.

What are the decorating projects that you like most?

I really like residential projects because of the relationship you develop with the client. A home interior design project is so intimate and personal. Many times, this relationship ends as friendship.

Was that the case when you did the decoration for Ricardo Arjona’s beach house?

I met Ricardo through the Architect Rodolfo Solares, and as we deal with all our clients, I told Ricardo “Look, I need to get to know you.

To learn what you like, how you live in your house, etc.” One day he called me and asked if he could come over to my house that evening with his wife. They arrived at 11 PM and we sat in the kitchen with a good cheese that my uncle had brought me from France and a good wine. We talked until 2 in the morning.

We talked about everything except his house!

And it was all just very relaxed. He felt at ease, and so we began work and the project took a year. He bought several pieces of furniture and we designed the spaces – every detail of the kitchen and the bathrooms. To make it all work together, we chose all the textiles from the store Textura [Cuida Tu Planeta]. The decor of that house is a mixture of objects from Asia and Morocco, with a Guatemalan touch that he wanted. So it was a very nice project.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I really like the sculptor Constantin Brâncuşi for the volumes he worked with. He’s very inspiring to me. Another designer that I really like is the Frenchman Jacques Dirand, for his treatment of materials and textures. But more generally, Guatemala itself is a great source of inspiration, especially the pre-Columbian culture, with the shapes of their pottery or their architectural elements. I also have a fascination with seeds. In my own home, I have seeds everywhere...

What are your expectations for the next few years?

I’d like to continue discovering the handicrafts and craftsmanship from other countries in Latin America like Peru or Ecuador, where there’s a cultural and traditional richness of great potential. You can always explore new subjects. For example, in Colombia they’re working with 120 different fibers! And that inspires us a lot.

In the coming years I see In Situ as a company uniting design with the commercial world, projecting ourselves into international markets (like the U.S., Europe, and Asia – where we’ve already opened an In Situ showroom in Singapore.)

El Laboratorio del Diseño Una entrevista con Eric Ledoigt por Mika Rakol Cuéntenos como empezó usted con In Situ.

Empecé con In Situ en 2003 con un ex socio, el arquitecto Carl Myers cuando empezamos a trabajar diseños de interiores juntos. Hicimos el restaurante Chispa en Miami, decoramos casas acá en Guatemala, en el puerto y en la capital. Para mí, fue la oportunidad de aprender el trabajo de diseñador de interiores con un profesional. Aprendí a organizarme más y como manejar un proyecto.

Luego en 2006, nos separamos y yo me quedé con In Situ, siguiendo con los proyectos de diseño de interiores.

Y ¿cómo ha cambiado In Situ desde 2006? ¡Ha crecido mucho! Empecé a trabajar solo y luego entraron Emma Gutiérrez y Roberto Santa Cruz. Pero fue realmente a partir de 2010 que hubo un cambio grande y ampliamos el equipo. Ahora el equipo cuenta con arquitectos, diseñadores industriales y diseñadores de interiores, lo cual nos permite de cumplir con una gama más amplia de proyectos.

Manejamos proyectos institucionales (en los cuales desarrollamos productos) y también proyectos de diseño de interiores residenciales y comerciales, como hoteles, restaurantes y oficinas.

“In Situ es un laboratorio. No es una tienda normal; por ejemplo no hay inventario y me gusta que el parámetro comercial no sea tan fuerte. Creamos algo y lo exponemos en In Situ. ¡Y hay cosas totalmente locas y únicas!”

“In Situ is a laboratory. It isn’t a regular store; for example there’s no inventory and I like it that it doesn’t feel so much like a business.

We create something and then we exhibit it at In Situ. And there’s some totally crazy and unique stuff!”

- Eric Ledoigt ¿Por qué los particulares les vienen a buscar?

Tenemos una clientela muy variada, pero todos nos visitan porque somos responsables y comprometidos con nuestro trabajo. Creo que es algo que inculcamos a todo el equipo de la oficina: de ser responsable con cada cliente y llevar un proyecto de la A hasta la Z. No solo somos creativos sino que también cuidamos todas las partes de ejecución. Al nivel creativo, no seguimos las modas, pero los clientes nos buscan por nuestro estilo a base de diseños con materiales naturales en ambientes cálidos y acogedores así como eclécticos.

Me gusta mezclar lo muy contemporáneo con lo antiguo, lo étnico y lo rústico. Para mí, una buena decoración es un buen balance entre todos los elementos del proyecto para que el espacio se vuelva funcional, acogedor y personalizado.

Tell us how you got started with In Situ.

I started with In Situ in 2003 with a former business partner, the architect Carl Myers, when we started working together on interior designs. We did Chispa Restaurant in Miami, we decorated houses here in Guatemala along the Pacific Coast and in Guatemala City. For me, it was an opportunity to be with a professional and learn the work of an interior designer. I learned to be a better organizer and how to manage a project. Then in 2006, we parted ways and I was left with In Situ, and have continued with interior design projects.

And how has In Situ changed since 2006?

It has grown a lot! I was working alone and then came Emma Gutiérrez and Roberto Santa Cruz. But 2010 is when there really was a big change and we expanded the team. Now the team has architects, industrial designers, and interior designers, allowing us to be able to work on a wider range of projects. We handle institutional projects (in which we develop products) and design residential interiors as well as commercial projects like hotels, restaurants, and offices.

Why do individuals come to you?

We have a clientele that’s quite varied, but all of them come to us because we’re responsible and committed to our work. I think it’s something that we instill in our entire team: be responsible with each customer and take the project all the way from A to Z. We are not only creative, but we also take care of the execution of the entire project. At the creative level, we don’t follow what’s trendy, but our clients look to us for our design style which is based on natural materials in warm, welcoming, and eclectic environments.

I like to mix the very contemporary with the ancient, the ethnic and the rustic. For me, a good decor is a balance between all the project’s elements so that the space becomes functional, cozy, and personalized.
