a creatividad del ser humano es tan vasta como los componentes del suelo del planeta que habitamos, y han sido utilizados estos elementos terrosos desde el principio de la historia para poder dar vida a nuestras ideas. Una gran diversidad de materiales es empleada día a día para lograr elementos de decoración. La arcilla es uno de esos materiales que se utiliza ampliamente gracias a su versatilidad, y los resultados – después del proceso que se le convierte en cerámica – son consideradas piezas de originalidad y distinción. Si además incluimos en el diseño de piezas un toque especial al pintarlas a mano, a un objeto común y corriente se puede dar un significado particular que representará la historia para aquellos que probablemente le utilizarán de generación en generación como un recuerdo de tradición. En la decoración colonial, claramente presente en La Antigua, no pueden faltar piezas consideradas fieles representantes de la personalización: los azulejos pintados a mano. Este arte, que persigue diseños únicos y composiciones que permitan la correlación de
las piezas por medio de un color o diseño que les de cohesión, usualmente fue utilizado en la ciudad para poder ilustrar estampas religiosas para diversos conventos y monasterios. Con el paso del tiempo y gracias a la influencia europea – especialmente todo el conocimiento en materia de azulejos y mosaicos que los españoles traían – muchas de las familias que habitaron en La Antigua les utilizaron para representar crestas y escudos. Decorar un azulejo requiere de destreza manual – para realizar los modelos de las diferentes piezas; planificación – para determinar el punto de cohesión; y mucha paciencia. Varias capas de pintura son necesarias para poder lograr azulejos únicos que puedan ser utilizados en distintos ambientes: usualmente la cocina, el comedor y, como tendencia reciente, en la contrahuella de las gradas. De esto dependerá el diseño, el sellador e incluso el tamaño que se necesita para obtener un buen resultado que dure la mayor cantidad de años posibles como para que entonces, transmitan esa historia que queremos que se recuerde para siempre.

Azulejos Artesanales
H
uman creativity is as vast as the components in the soil of our planet, and these earthy elements have been used since the beginning of history to bring our ideas to life. Every day, a wide variety of materials is used to make decorative elements. Clay is one of those materials thanks to its versatility, and after using the process by which it is converted into ceramic, the results are original and distinctive. If we also include the extra effort of painting these pieces by hand, an ordinary object can be imbued with a special meaning which will represent history for those who will probably use the item for generations to come, as a reminder of tradition. In the Spanish Colonial style of décor – abundantly present in La Antigua – items which can be considered true representatives of this personalization abound: hand-painted tiles. This art, with its unique designs and compositions that allow a unified décor grouping by color or design, was frequently used in the city to illustrate religious pictures for the various convents
and monasteries. Over time and due to European influence – especially the knowledge of tile and mosaics which the Spanish brought with them – many of the families that lived in La Antigua used them to display their family crests and coats of arms. Decorating a ceramic tile requires manual dexterity – for making mockups of the parts; planning – to determine where the individual parts will line up; and lots of patience. Several layers of paint are needed to make distinctive tiles that can be used in different environments: usually the kitchen, the dining room, and – a recent decorating trend – on the risers of stairs. The design, the sealant used, and even the size needed for best results will all depend on where the tiles are to be used. Once these issues are taken into consideration, the result is beautiful art that will last for many years and will convey a story which we want to be remembered forever.

s de imaginarse que en una ciudad llena de detalles arquitectónicos que son delicados e imponentes a la vez, se encuentre ciertos patrones de diseño. En La Antigua, usualmente se puede encontrar una fuente – y a veces más de una – en los parques y monumentos. Muchas han formado parte de la historia de la ciudad y se poseen pequeñas anécdotas o datos históricos acerca de ellas. Tal es el caso de la “Fuente de las Sirenas” en el centro del Parque Central [MAP D4], diseñada en 1739 por el arquitecto maestro Diego de Porres, quien prácticamente estuvo a cargo de la mayor parte del diseño de la ciudad. En el Convento de San Francisco [MAP E6] se encuentra aún las bases de la “Fuente Peregrina”, una hermosa fuente que fue trasladada – durante el gobierno del general Jorge Ubico en los 1930 – hacia el Convento de la Iglesia de La Merced [MAP B4], y es la más grande de toda la ciudad.
Se dice que, además de poseer bonitos diseños, la mayoría de las fuentes en La Antigua servían para poder proveer de agua a las bestias de carga que transportaban víveres y compras desde el mercado en la plaza central hasta lugares como El Calvario [MAP F6, luego más al sur], en donde además las arboledas – hasta la fecha – permiten sentarse a la sombra a descansar un poco del sol. Grandes, pequeñas, con diseños y patrones interesantes o sencillas, de reciente o antigua construcción y algunas aparentemente olvidadas, cada una de estas estructuras ha estado presente en el momento en que se han creado historias, ya sea en La Antigua de antaño o de La Antigua de hoy en día. ¿Cuántas de estas fuentes puedes mencionar? No importa lo profundo que es tu conocimiento de la ciudad, seguramente te harán falta varias, entonces ¡es tiempo de caminar por La Antigua y conocerlas!

The Fountains of La Antigua Guatemala
I
n a city full of architectural details that are both delicate and impressive at the same time, certain design patterns are bound to be frequently encountered. In La Antigua, a fountain can usually be found – and sometimes more than one – in the parks and at the various monuments. Many of the fountains have been part of the city’s history and there are little anecdotes and some historical information about them. Such is the case of the “Mermaid Fountain” at the center of Parque Central [MAP D4]. It was designed in 1739 by master architect Diego de Porres, who was in charge of nearly all of the city’s design. In the Convent of San Francisco [MAP E6], the base of the “Fuente Peregrina” (or “Pilgrim Fountain”) can still be found. This beautiful fountain was moved – in the 1930s during the government of General Jorge Ubico – to the Convent of the La Merced Church [MAP B4], and it’s still the largest in the city.
It’s said that, in addition to their beautiful designs, most of the fountains in La Antigua served to provide water to the beasts of burden that carried supplies and purchases from the market in the central square to places like El Calvario [MAP F6, then farther south], where the abundant trees also provided shade – and still do – for travelers to rest a little, out of the bright sunshine. Large, small, with interesting designs or just plain, recently built or antique, and some which are apparently forgotten, each of these structures has been present when history has been made, in either the La Antigua of yesteryear or the La Antigua of today. How many of these fountains can you name? No matter how good your knowledge of the city is, you’ll probably miss a few. So it’s time to walk around La Antigua and get to know some of them!

Date gusto con los colores encendidos y los patrones que más llaman tu atención. Si buscas algo más sobrio, elige tres o cuatro colores predominantes y contrasta colores en los detalles o puntos focales. En cuestión del mobiliario, lo mejor será empezar por los muebles que ya tienes, aquellos que te han sido heredados, los que hayas rescatado o encontrado en tiendas de segunda mano. No será difícil mezclar piezas únicas con aquellas que tienen un significado especial para ti. Recuerda que, en Boho Chic, todo objeto de arte es bienvenido. lguna vez te has preguntado cómo se cocinaba hace muchos años en La Antigua? Uno de los recuerdos que puedo mencionar al hablar de este tema es el de observar a mi abuela con detenimiento mientras acarreaba leña y unos trozos de carbón hacia su “pollo” para poder preparar, al calor de la leña, una infinidad de platillos. Pollo es el término que se utiliza para poder describir un tipo de estufa de leña, y es muy parecida a un horno en cuestión de los materiales de construcción que se utilizaban. La leña era metida dentro de una especie de caja de metal rodeada de ladrillos – que son idóneos para retener el calor por su resistencia a las altas temperaturas – y sobre esta caja se colocaba una pieza de hierro fundido que serviría de base en la que las ollas y los sartenes se colocarían. Esta base, en forma de plancha, tenía varios anillos removibles para que las ollas y sartenes tuvieran un contacto directo con el fuego abajo.
En algunas de las casas no existía una división propia entre sala, cocina y comedor, así que básicamente el espacio era el mismo, y allí es donde el pollo o estufa de leña tenía una doble función. La primera función es la misma que les damos a las estufas hoy en día, y la segunda, que debido a que en cualquier momento podría necesitarse cocinar algo – más específicamente estar hirviendo agua constantemente para purificarla y utilizarla para la limpieza – este pollo estaba “encendido” (mantenía el fuego alimentado por madera) todo el día y eso proporcionaba calor a toda la vivienda. Durante la noche, ayudaba a mantener el calor en el hogar cuando la temperatura exterior era demasiado fría. Actualmente este tipo de estufas tienen una función principalmente ornamental, aunque puede ser que en algunos hogares aún les den el uso que conocían todos aquellos que vivieron en La Antigua en épocas pasadas.

The Colonial Stove

ave you ever wondered how cooking was done many years ago in La Antigua? One of the memories about this issue that I want to mention is how I closely watched my grandmother while she carried firewood and a few pieces of charcoal to the “pollo” to cook, by the heat of the fire, countless dishes. Pollo is the term used to describe a type of wood stove, and it’s much like an oven, as far as the materials used to construct it are concerned. Firewood was placed into a metal box surrounded by bricks – which are ideal for retaining heat because of their resistance to high temperatures – and on top of this box, a piece of cast iron was set, forming a base on which the pots and pans would be placed. This base, in the form of a flat-top grill, had several removable rings so that the pots and pans could have direct contact with the fire below.

In some homes, there was no real differentiation between the living room, the kitchen, and the dining room – it was basically one space – and that’s where the pollo or wood stove had a dual function. The first was the same as we use stoves for today, and the second function, because at any time something might need to be heated or cooked – more specifically, water was constantly being boiled to purify it and for use in cleaning – this pollo was “turned on” all day (the fire was kept fed with firewood) and thus provided warmth to the entire house. During the night, it provided heat when it got too cold outside. Nowadays, this type of stove is mainly for decoration, although in some households they may still be used in ways that those who lived in La Antigua in ages past were familiar with.
