{RECAPTURE, RENEW and REVITALIZE} RECAPTURE, RENEW AND REVITALIZE THE SPIRIT OF QUINCY UNIVERSITY IS THE CURRENT VISION OF ACTING PRESIDENT PHIL CONOVER; A VISION SHARED BY THE LARGER CAMPUS COMMUNITY. THE UNIVERSITY LAUNCHED A MONUMENTAL CAMPAIGN TO SURVIVE DURING THE CURRENT DIFFICULT ECONOMIC CLIMATE IN HIGHER EDUCATION. THE EFFORT WAS BORN OF NECESSITY, URGENCY, AND CALLING. ADMINISTRATORS, STAFF, FACULTY AND STUDENTS ARE WORKING TOGETHER IN CREATIVE WAYS AND IN A SPIRIT OF COLLABORATION TO FIX WHAT’S BROKEN, CREATE NEW EFFICIENCIES AND LAY THE GROUNDWORK FOR A REINVENTED FUTURE FOR THE FRANCISCAN UNIVERSITY. Conover and former Chief Financial Officer Tom Ponto championed a “reboot” effort during the Spring semester of 2017. Together, they held campus-wide town hall meetings, formed new committees, opened lines of communication,

encouraged institutional transparency, and created an atmosphere of growth and hope. The “reboot” examined every decision and action made by administrators, encouraged staff to propose innovative solutions to existing processes, and called on students to become engaged consumers, partners and promoters of their own education. The many initiatives of this effort changed everything. The atmosphere on campus is positive. Attitudes have changed, innovative collaboration is evident and there is a strong sense of community developed from the difficult work that went into addressing the significant financial crisis that hit Quincy University last Fall. QU faced a seven million dollar deficit caused by a myriad of reasons that, once under the microscope, became the focus of an intense effort to retool campus operations. In creating a plan to reach financial equilibrium, administrators put every aspect of campus policy and procedure under the microscope and created a plan to put QU back on track.

QUINCY UNIVERSITY UNVEILS NEW STRATEGIC PLAN
office realignment
QUINCY, Ill. – Quincy University recently completed a strategic plan to guide the school from 2017 – 2022. The plan was developed over the past two years by the entire QU community including trustees, administrators, faculty, students, alumni, business leaders and community members. More than fifty people formed five teams representing the key focus areas of academic excellence, Franciscan mission, campus environment, enrollment growth and financial stability.
Staff offices, including financial aid and the business office, have combined into one-stop shops to better serve student needs.
campus experience Students returning to QU in the fall or entering for the first time, will see a renovated and more welcoming campus thanks to the Summer Revitalization Project. During the campus downtime, students are painting dorms, installing flooring, and doing odd jobs to give the campus facilities an upgrade. The revitalization project is just one example of how new initiatives are encouraging community building, providing opportunity for ownership, and sparking a contagious excitement for the future of QU.

Commencement 2017 | QU
Who am I?
On May 14, all roads led to 18th and College Avenue as Quincy University celebrated its 154th Commencement. by Barbara Schleppenbach, PhD ’71 From Vietnam and Edinburgh or a few short blocks from campus, proud friends and family members followed the path forged by the graduates just a few years earlier. At that time, each brought a personal story of challenge, hope, and determination. Together, as QU president Robert Gervasi reminded them, “they became part of the big Quincy University story.” During Baccalaureate Mass on Saturday, May 13, Director of Campus Ministry Ray Heilmann described that process of transformation. The Millennial Generation asks, “Who am I?” QU responds with the call to service: “Who do you want to be?” He urged the graduates to continue creating “a ripple effect” of good in the world, buoyed by “integrity, faith, and wisdom” as they set forth on their life journeys. As Commencement ceremonies began, senior class representative Tayler Ruppel observed that their new directions might not seem perfectly clear at first. “Please don’t worry if life seems a little scary right now. We just graduated today, which doesn’t mean that we need to have our lives together tomorrow. I truly believe that each of you has something to give to this world, and when the time is right, it will come to you.”
Who do you want to be?
Tayler’s welcome was followed by the conferring of an honorary degree upon William James Harte (’54), whose own call to give back led him to a legal career in defense of civil rights, human rights, and Catholic causes.

Commencement 2017 | QU
A previous (1968) honorary degree recipient, Harte was named Catholic Lawyer of the Year (2001) by the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago. His service to his alma mater included the Quincy College v. Burlington Northern case (1967) in which he successfully fought discontinuation of train service from Chicago to Quincy. In the 50 years since that decision, thousands of students have benefited from his victory. In his Commencement address, former state representative, lawyer, and lobbyist Michael McClain encouraged students to trust their “GPS system” of brain, heart, and soul to guide them in the future. The GPS they brought to QU was molded lovingly by family, friends, church, and teachers. “Now it has been enhanced by the Franciscan values that were present here every day,” McClain said.
“You’ll be driving down a lot of life’s roads. You’ll face fog, bad weather, ice storms, road construction. Some of your road will be bumpy, and some will be smooth.” Noting that people often learn and achieve greatness because of adversity, he shared a key to navigating the rough patches: “You will always be a Hawk. Keep your QU GPS turned on.”
Keep your QU GPS turned on. As President Robert Gervasi congratulated the 284 bachelor’s and master’s graduates, he thanked the many preceding speakers who had expressed their gratitude for the nine years of dedicated service that he and his wife, Mrs. Jen Gervasi, had devoted to the university. As he reflected on the couple’s move to a new presidential appointment, he recalled the inspiring words of Mother Teresa. “Since today is Mother’s Day, I wanted to share words that have come to be associated with perhaps one of the most admired mothers in the world,” he said. Despite praise for her generous contributions that led to her canonization, Mother Teresa often faced criticism, and her response to that experience should encourage anyone. It concludes with this memorable exhortation:
“The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.” As the students processed into the brilliant May sunshine, a thousand cameras emerged to make the day “Facebook official.” New journeys began--some to exotic locales such as Japan and Morocco, some to a dream job across town. Fresh stories will be written; whether retold during a homecoming visit or posted on social media, they will become part of the QU story, a saga of friendship, success, and service. [ Kansas City to become a missionary ]
Katherine Rathgeber is headed to Kansas City after graduation to become a missionary. She would like to work in the office of Deaf Ministry for the Archdiocese of Kansas. Rathgeber is originally from southern New Mexico and initially had not heard of Quincy University. She originally planned to attend engineering school, but after developing a strong bond and friendship with a member of the Deaf community, she had a different plan. “It’s been awesome. I love the interpreting program and really enjoy what I’m doing now,” Rathgeber said. She recently wrote a proposal suggesting ways for Deaf Ministry to grow. She proposed a sign language class, which would help teach the hearing community in the parish to talk to the Deaf community.
“Deaf people are appreciative for people who try. I feel like this is where God has placed me and this is what I’m supposed to be doing. I absolutely love it.”
“I think a lot of the times people are worried to talk to a Deaf person and don’t know what to do or where to start. It’s hard in a good way.” Rathgeber said.

Lemon and his Hawk teammates were inducted into the Quincy University Hall of Fame during a special ceremony on February 18. The team was joined by fellow inductee Bill Postiglione, longtime head coach of the women’s soccer program. The event was held in the Hall of Fame Room in the Health and Fitness Center. MEN’S BASKETBALL
by Brendan Bittner
The QU men’s basketball team made its first trip to the NCAA Tournament in seven years, advancing to the second round after beating perennial national power Kentucky Wesleyan, 78-75, in the tournament opener in Louisville, Ky. The Hawks, under the direction of 14-year head coach Marty Bell, matched the second-highest win total in program history, going 25-7 overall and winning the Great Lakes Valley Conference West
Division title. Forward Joseph Tagarelli ’17 set the school record for points in a season with 632 and became the first Quincy player to ever be selected to play in the Reese’s Division II All-Star Game. He also made four go-ahead baskets in the final two minutes of games, none more impressive than a 10-foot leaner to beat Rockhurst at Pepsi Arena in midFebruary. The player who supplied the 80foot inbounds pass on the play, forward
Evan McGaughey ’17, became just the second player in program history to be selected to the All-GLVC teams three times and graduated as QU’s fourth-highest scorer (1,574 points) of all-time. Tagarelli and Herm Senor ‘17 (Southampton, England) and McGaughey (Heidelberg, Germany) each signed contracts to play with professional clubs in Europe, beginning this fall.

Quincy an 8-5 lead. The Hawks then got incredible pitching performances to beat host Northwood twice on the final day, 4-3 and 2-0, to clinch their trip to Grand Prairie, Texas. Quincy dropped both of its games at the World Series to Colorado Mesa and UC San Diego, but enjoyed six days in the Lonestar State’s championship spotlight. The NCAA Tournament run came on the heels of four straight wins in the GLVC Tournament, earning the program’s third GLVC championship
and first since 2011. Overall, the Hawks went 37-23 and have averaged 39 wins over the last three years. Following the season, second baseman Jake Walters ’17 earned All-America honors after hitting .327 with 18 home runs. Pitcher Graham Spraker ’17 was drafted in the 31st round of the MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, joining former first baseman David Jacob ‘16 in the organization. Spraker was 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in five postseason appearances for the Hawks.

against schools that had rosters full of white players,” Lemon said. The men’s basketball team boasted a 17-9 record and made it to the Sweet 16 of the NAIA national tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. Members of the 1954-55 team that were in attendance included Lemon, Dick Thompson, Edsel Bester and Sid Tucker. Forrester’s daughter, Rita Grider, was also at the event. “The 1954-55 team is an extraordinary example of how the passage of time revealed the true historical significance,” Grider said in her induction speech. The leadership Forrester used when coaching these young men was nothing short of incredible. The team consisted of ten players, only two of whom were
upperclassmen (one senior and one junior). In the 1950s, few schools had black players on their rosters, but that didn’t stop Coach Forrester from playing these men. Other than the rosters of historically black universities, Quincy College might have been the first college basketball team ever to play white and black players together. Another QU legend, Postiglione, was inducted shortly after the 1954-55 basketball team. He was the very first women’s soccer coach in program history. He finished his career with a 181-17128 record over 23 seasons from 1983 to 2005. He was able to lead his Lady Hawks team to back-to-back NCAA Division II Final Four games. Postiglione created a national powerhouse in Quincy, and his legacy carries on with the team.
BASEBALL
The QU baseball team made an unprecedented run through the postseason, advancing to the program’s first-ever NCAA Division II World Series in 2017. The Hawks, led by seventh-year head coach Josh Rabe ‘00, were on the brink of elimination in the Midwest Regional in Midland, Mich., trailing Wayne State, 5-3, in the top of the ninth before Brynn Martinez ’18 slugged a gametying, two-run homer and J.C. n the historic halls of 1800 College Avenue, you’re bound to hear a lot about the “Quincy University Family”. Of course, that includes our faculty and staff who lay the groundwork for our institution. It includes our student body who continuously give us inspiration and hope for the future. And it includes our 10,000 alumni who all over the world exemplify day in and day out what it means to be a Hawk. But make no mistake. This is only part of it. Our family is much, much bigger. As our mission statement outlines, “we respect each person as a sister or brother with dignity, value, and worth.” And like any family, we aim to help one another in times of need.
Dot Foods CEO Joe Tracy never took a class at Quincy University. He never pulled an all-nighter in Padua Hall the night before a big exam. He never wore a beanie, rode a donkey through the gymnasium, or chugged hot sauce during a Hawk Wild weekend. Yet when he saw what the University needed in terms of financial recovery efforts, the Colorado State and the University of Memphis alumnus, thought about what Quincy University means to Adams County.
“QU is a vital part of the West-Central Illinois community, and Dot believes that when our communities thrive, we all thrive.”
Joe Tracy saw a need that he and his Mount Sterling-based company, Dot Foods, could help fulfill.

IN FACT, IN JUST OVER A YEAR with Global Jetcare, Cheney has visited more than 40 countries in six different continents. And yet, he has his eyes set on the seventh. “Never been to Antarctica, but I think I’d like to go one day just to say I did it,” he says. “I mean, when you do the first six [continents], you kind of have to, right?” With such complex routes, and strict ten-hour flight limits on pilots, Ryan and his crewmates do capitalize on any opportunity he can to see the world beyond the cockpit. It’s common practice for pilots like Ryan to be airlined to a foreign country to get in position and wait for their next assignment. Fortunately, they get to have a little fun while they’re at it too. “And once we get there, we’re just out there vacationing, exploring, and having a good time,” he says. “This is the most awesome job ever for a single young person.”

FR. JOHN OSTDIEK U P T O T H E S E D AY S ?
by Fr. Joe Zimmerman Fr. John Ostdiek, OFM ’50 recently returned to Holy Cross Friary after spending a few years in St. Louis. He still drives all over town and is a respected member of the community. He’s 95 years young now--though he’s not the senior member of Holy Cross Friary. That honor goes to 96-year-old Fr. Irenaeus Kimminau. Fr. John regularly publishes a short, inspirational article titled “Whispers in Life.” The number of Catholics who no longer identify with the Church is something he feels strongly about. His articles are his own way of making a difference on this front. The Ostdiek family is important not only in his John’s life, but in the lives of all of us friars. His younger brother Gilbert

is a world-class liturgical theologian at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. With members of his family, he is writing a book on sustainability. And a few years ago, John dismantled five of our dining room tables and took the table tops to another member of the family in Dayton, Ohio, to be sanded down and refinished. Today all five tables still look as though they just came out of the shop. (And he makes sure they stay that way by making sure we use placemats all the time!) Fr. John has unfortunately retired the bowling ball, but at one time he was as much a world-class bowler as his brother is in theology. He has several 300 games to his credit, but age takes its toll. But it hasn’t slowed him down any other way that I can see.

Have you ever thought about the people, places, or experiences
QU ALUMNI FOCUS
that have impacted your life the most? The parts of your life that made you the person you are today? For us, it has truly been the time we spent at Quincy College. It is here where we received
GREAT EDUCATIONS and met a family of people who changed our lives forever. We routinely see many of our Quincy friends from all over the country and the conversation always goes back to our days at Quincy College. We GREW
UP together, LEARNED together, made mistakes, worked hard, and PLAYED even harder. And all the while, we were watched over and cared for by a remarkable staff. In fact, most of our other acquaintances are puzzled at the closeness we feel towards Quincy and the friends we made while attending. We were fortunate to receive financial aid, making a private, Catholic college education AFFORDABLE for us. And we feel blessed to have been given that opportunity. We are honored to contribute to the QU Fund so that other young people can have that same experience that will impact their own lives for years to come! We are more than happy to contribute to such a worthwhile endeavor.
SUPPORT THE QU FUND TODAY at www.quincy.edu/support-qu or call 217-228-5227 Your gift—large or small—matters.
