STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IS KEY “Student involvement is key to building lasting relationships with students. Students who are engaged socially and feel supported are more likely to stay and finish at the University.” —JOHANN ST. JOHN
J
by Jen Wingerter ’13
OHANN ST. JOHN, director of campus programs and residence life, is working to strengthen connections with students by filling gaps and providing intentional programming. He faces a tough challenge.
“An average of twenty percent of students will naturally get involved, while another twenty percent never will; that leaves sixty percent that can go either way. It’s our job to turn those sixty percent toward involvement,” said St. John. When St. John joined QU in November 2017, he spent time investigating areas that needed attention and looking for gaps in the student experience. He recognized that concentrated efforts should be made to create a multicultural and diverse campus. He selected eight students (four men, and four women) to attend the National Student Diversity Conference in Chicago. Together the team of students recognized QU’s strengths and weaknesses and created an action plan for the institution. From there, the team prioritized and chose ideas to implement at the University. “We have eight students who are invested and who want to push an agenda,” said St. John. The team looks forward to hosting workshops, lunches, and inclusion dinners in the coming year.

Strengthening student leadership is a goal of St. John. A successful leadership program inspires students to accomplish and achieve more than they may ever have dreamed possible. St. John wants each student to feel something new was unlocked in them from their time at QU. “I want them to feel prepared to step into the world. I don't want to change them, but to encourage them to grow in their values. I want them to be their best,” said St. John. Recognition plays a crucial role in engagement and is particularly meaningful from peers. This past school year, QU students, staff, and faculty nominated students with excellence in leadership, service, school spirit, and community impact for the first Student Achievement Awards. The purpose of the awards is to celebrate student efforts and inspire their peers to step into leadership roles. As St. John finishes his first year at QU, he is trying new things to see what works and what doesn’t. He wants to find what the students love. An objective of St. John’s is to develop experiences and create opportunities students can anticipate. St. John considers it essential to define traditions so students have events they can look forward to throughout the school year. His overall goal is to make the program better and for the student body to feel that QU is there for them.

I think what we are doing, besides just events, is to instill trust with students, the community, our working relationships, and our partnerships. I want our residence life to be a premier leadership program. I want programming on this campus to be something special. I want students that leave here telling other people, ‘we did this,’ I want our students to have that. —JOHANN ST. JOHN

by Dr. Barb Schleppenbach, PhD ’71
The stands of Memorial Gymnasium bloomed with spring colors as loyal fans filled them to capacity. The band matched the high spirits with a championship soundtrack. The scene was set to celebrate a winning season.
All eyes were on the home team—nearly 300-strong—as they confidently marched toward the finish line. On the afternoon of Saturday, May 12, the members of the class of 2018 were ready to claim victory. Student speaker Darek Lambert welcomed the crowd by reflecting on the power of the moment: “We’ve accomplished one of our first essential goals in our lives. And if this one feels this good, I cannot wait for what else is to come.” He reminded the graduates of the teamwork that led to this success. “One thing to remember is that we all are sharing this day together,” he declared. “Not only today but all the other days before, and we will all look back on the bonds we all share and how Quincy University was able to bring every one of us into each other's lives.” The accomplishments made possible by collaboration became a theme for the day as President Phil Conover conferred an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree on the Honorable Ray LaHood, former United States Congressman and Secretary of Transportation. Congressman LaHood’s long-term leadership, in seeking bipartisan consensus has repeatedly been recognized as a potent force for achieving the common good.

248 Commencement speaker Francis G. Slay also emphasized the importance of partnerships. A member of the QU class of 1977, Slay is the longest-serving mayor of St. Louis, concluding his fourth, and final term in 2017. “As the mayor of St. Louis for quite a few years, I know very well that no one accomplishes much alone,” Slay observed. “I am often asked whether I miss the job of being mayor. What I say is this: serving the people of St. Louis as their mayor was a big honor. I enjoyed it – most of the time.” “But what I really do miss are the people I worked with, in government and outside of government; people who care deeply about the city and are working hard to make city government work better, and to make the city a better place for everyone.” Slay reminded the students that their QU education prepared them for similar challenges in the future. “Here, at Quincy, you set goals for yourself, and you have accomplished much. You set goals to get good grades, to complete research projects, and to graduate. You will be doing the same in your personal and professional life.”

ENVISION Slay recalled lessons learned as a Hall of Fame member of a QU soccer team that claimed three NAIA National Soccer Championships. “When I was a young boy, before a soccer game, one of my coaches told me, ‘Don’t tell yourself that you will score a goal today.’ Instead, the coach advised him to envision scoring three goals. “The coach’s point was obvious,” Slay explained. “If you have the whole game to score one goal, psychologically, you are limiting yourself. And that one goal may never come. But if you set your sights higher, you will achieve more.”

“I urge you to follow your heart or your head – or whatever it is in you that makes you go too far and take risks.” Francis G. Slay ’77
Striving to achieve more, Slay added, entails a risk of failing. “I urge you to follow your heart or your head – or whatever it is in you that makes you go too far and take risks. T.S. Eliot – a St. Louisan, by the way – said, ‘Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.’” Slay emphasized that life’s risks grow most meaningful in service to others. “You have a lot to offer, and you can make a difference in the communities in which you live,” he stated. “I encourage you to use your talent, your knowledge, and your abilities to help improve, and address challenges that affect a school district, a neighborhood, a city, a state, and yes, even a nation.” President Conover echoed this challenge in his concluding advice to the graduates. “I hope you have a strong commitment to put your education to good use and continue a long tradition of QU grads making a difference. I hope that you will cherish the friends, staff, and faculty relationships that you developed while you were here.” Soon the graduates were sharing the excitement of their achievement with family, friends, professors, and staff members under the brilliant sunshine of a May afternoon. But in tough times as well as joyous ones, the words of Mayor Slay will continue to inspire them. “Never forget what it felt like when you marched together, stood together, laughed and cried together. That feeling – the feeling of succeeding together – is one of life’s best.” QUniverse | Summer 2018

BASEBALL HISTORY IN THE MAKING by Ryan Snyder ’16 A BITTERSWEET DAY FOR QU
The cornerstone behind the unparalleled success of Quincy baseball during the last four seasons was its shortstop, Brynn Martinez ‘18. In four seasons as the Hawks shortstop, Martinez has started all 220 games throughout his QU career.
This date may seem insignificant to some, but to the Quincy University Baseball Team, it marked the end of the most successful era in program history.
The Hawks advanced to the first NCAA World Series in program history, played in four NCAA Tournaments, won back to back GLVC Tournament titles in 2017 and 2018, all with Martinez playing shortstop.

May 20, 2018—The Quincy University Baseball Team saw its 2018 season come to an end in the NCAA Midwest Regional in a 10-4 loss to the Ohio Dominican Panthers.
Martinez accumulated 157 wins in his time as a Hawk, which makes him the winningest single sport athlete in the history of Quincy University. The Hawks won 71% of their games during Martinez’s time in the brown and gold.
In a program that produced two former Major Leaguers Minnesota Twin, Josh Rabe ‘01, and 2006 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinal, Josh Kinney ‘01, few have had the career that compares to Brynn Martinez. His name is scattered throughout the record books, and his career has become the bench mark for success for the QU Baseball Team.

Martinez’s career cemented himself as one of the best athletes to ever wear a QU uniform. While he achieved success, he did so with sportsmanship and class.
A BENCHMARK FOR SUCCESS
Martinez was named to three All-Region teams and was an All-GLVC performer for the Hawks in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
Off the field, Martinez continued to succeed as the president of QU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. He created a baseball Bible study for the program.

A NEW ADDITION The Quincy University Athletic Department is pleased to announce the addition of Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse as the 18th and 19th varsity sports that participate in NCAA competition. Both teams will begin athletic competition in the 2019-2020 school year. “We are excited about the addition of Men's and Women's Lacrosse. The benefits of bringing new athletes to QU from different markets will diversify our student body and allow QU to extend its academic offerings to prospective students from new regions of the country. We have a state-of-the-art facility and the infrastructure to make lacrosse successful both on and off the field. These program additions complement the University's growth initiatives which will be vital to the long-term sustainability of QU,” said Marty Bell, vice president for intercollegiate athletics. Kathelene Kim was named the head women’s lacrosse coach. Kim joins Quincy University after spending the last two seasons at Queens University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kim helped lead Queens to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2017, all while coaching a pair of All-Americans. Previously, Kim spent two seasons as an assistant coach at LenoirRhyne University, including time as the acting head coach where she coached a pair of All-Americans.

Eric Ruppel was named the head coach for the men’s lacrosse team. Ruppel takes over the lacrosse program after spending this last season as the associate head coach at Adams State, where he coached a pair of all-conference selections. Ruppel was the head coach at the University of Texas, Dallas before coaching at Adams State. While there, Ruppel was Lone Star Alliance Conference Coach of the Year. In 2017, UT-Dallas won a division championship and finished the year ranked 25th in the country.

Nick graduated QU with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics; he wanted to be a high school math teacher. However, he had worked at a chiropractic office during his college breaks and grew to love the profession. After QU, Nick continued his education at Logan University earning a doctorate in chiropractic in 2016. In 2017 Nick opened his own practice, Rozell Chiropractic in Edwardsville, Ill. “I love that I can stay active with athletes and non-athletes alike,” said Nick. “Getting people out of pain and keeping them healthy is very rewarding.”
Achieving their dreams both as a couple and in their careers did not happen overnight. It took years of hard work, determination, patience, some tears but most importantly a million baby steps and a whole lot of love. “For us, it was so important to remember what the end goal was,” said Dana. “We knew we wanted to get married and have a family, so we made sure to do whatever it took to make that happen, sooner than later.” QUniverse | Summer 2018
During their time at QU, Nick and Dana were both student-athletes; Nick played football and Dana cheered and was an active member of Phi Sigma Sigma sorority. They both agree that a liberal arts education along with supportive faculty and staff helped them grow in so many ways. “My time at QU definitely helped get me to where I am today,” said Nick. “Being on the football team and keeping up with the wellrounded curriculum helped me succeed and learn time management.”
“The challenging science classes prepared me for the rigorous curriculum that optometry school would bring,” said Dana. “Dr. Kimberly Hale really takes the time to invest in the students and make them part of her family.” Nick and Dana recently welcomed their first-born son, Max Robert Rozell on June 25, 2018. They enjoy spending time with friends and family and look forward to raising Max and continuing to grow Rozell Chiropractic. www.quincy.edu

Franciscan values are alive and well at QU because they are alive and well in the student body. The optimism to grow is directly related to student leadership and involvement. Quincy University is blessed with students who are involved, passionate, and work hard. Every major project completed through Campus Ministry is student initiated. Students are facilitating, organizing, and planning trips and projects; they are reaching out helping hands to fellow students, to the Quincy community, and impoverished in the U.S. “The students who are directly related to campus ministry have been nothing short of phenomenal,” said Heilmann. Genesis Torrens ’19 and Fr. John Doctor developed a spiritual mentor program for students living in the dorms.
This multi-faith program provides studentled mentorship to fellow students. Mentors provide encouragement, support, and a listening ear. It's a way for students to learn to empathize and understand what life is like for others. The student mentors meet monthly for training, to share a meal, and pray for the ministry.

MISSION
The majority of mission trips come from internal ideas, inspired by places and causes that are important to students. Heilmann was only campus ministry director for a short time when he was contacted by Gino Grivetti ’18, about a mission trip to PEORIA.
HE REPLIED, “I DON’T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN, BUT I’M WILLING TO BEGIN.” The next day Heilmann received an e-mail with an eight-page attachment outlining the mission trip. Grivetti took care of all the details including where to stay, what to wear, how they would get there, what they would do, and where they would eat. By the time July 1 came around the trip was on the schedule. Currently, mission trips and service projects take place in QUINCY, critically poor areas in the U.S., and through the Haiti Connection Program.
CAMPUS MINISTRY’S APPROACH TO MISSION IDEAS IS TO APPROACH EVERY OPPORTUNITY WITH “WHY CAN’T WE?” What students learn through service hours is a part of life-long learning. It enhances the education they receive from QU. Students time management skills grow as they learn to balance academics, relationships, work, and community involvement. They experience social growth and spend time with people that are outside their social circles, realizing what is needed and how they can meet those needs. Students begin to see the world through a new lens and it challenges their belief system. Heilmann says,
“WE WANT OUR GRADUATES TO GO INTO THE WORLD WITH OPEN EYES AND MINDS, TO WORK HARD, BE LIFELONG LEARNERS, BE A POSITIVE INFLUENCE, AND TRANSFORMATIVE IN SOME WAY. ” QUniverse | Summer 2018

WHEN
Rich and Connie Niemann gave Quincy University a generous gift to revitalize the chapel at North, Campus, their vision was for the music program to regain luster and for the new recital hall and classrooms to be a tool to bring music students to QU. “Let the Connie Niemann Center for Music be the front door for the University's Music Program,” said Rich Niemann of his vision.
For the past four years, the music professors have represented QU at the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) convention. The convention is the hub of all high school musicians and directors. It’s also where the state’s best high school vocalist and instrumentalist compete. The QU booth is a favored stop where the professors have a great time interacting with high school students, reconnecting with alumni, and pass out maracas. QU has recruited an all-state vocalist they met at ILMEA who will attend this fall.
Five years later the professors of music have made good use of that front door.

“We are becoming a place people go to for musical expertise.” Bill Machold

EDUCATION
outreach is another way the Music Department is gaining exposure. Dr. Christine Damm, assistant professor of music and director of jazz band ensemble, was invited to speak at both the Iowa (IMEA) and Illinois (ILMEA) Music Education Association Conventions. Her article, ‘Improving Your Clarinet Section with Five Easy Steps,’ was published in the IMEA winter journal.
This past academic year, thanks to funds from QU's Music Patrons, instrumental and vocalist groups from QU toured high schools within a two-hour radius. To go on tour serves a two-fold purpose. It shows prospective students several things about QU: student talent and opportunities, and professor expertise. Tours also allow QU students to perform before a different audience and helps them grow as musicians. In October 2017, the choir visited several high schools in Missouri, and the Woodwind Ensemble toured six high schools in St. Louis.
“I am honored to have been chosen to speak at these music conventions. I love sharing my passion for music and music education with band directors and students. It's a great opportunity to showcase Quincy University's music program throughout the Midwest,” says Damm.
QU recently hired Courtney Gear '15 to help with recruitment efforts.
New this year at QU, the Music Department hosted several workshops and an all-district master class. The professors also work with local high school bands. Bill Machold, assistant professor of music and director of bands, hosts a youth percussion camp in the summer. “We are becoming a place people go to for musical expertise,” said Machold.

“Through generous donations, we were able to hire Courtney,” said Amy K. Stollberg, instructor of vocal music and director of choirs. “She is one of the reasons we have had an influx of auditions.” The University also plans to enhance scholarship opportunities to increase recruitment and help music majors with tuition costs. Five years ago, the Niemann's envisioned a place where music could thrive. Today, because of generous donations and the efforts of the committed QU music professors, it is.

All thanks to QU. “I couldn’t even read music when I first declared my major as music education. The QU music department has made a career in music education possible for me. I went from next to no background in music, to a capable music educator in four years.”
SINGING
remains my primary instrument as it is the one I came to QU with. But, thanks to my professors and the education I received, I was able to expand my musicianship to all manners of percussion. I began playing in the QU Marching Band as a part of the drum line, and I also began playing drum set for the QU Hawk Express Jazz Band. I sing in all three of our choirs, play in the marching band, our concert band, symphonic band, pep band, Jazz band, and the newly formed percussion ensemble. Participating in these ensembles has given me experience that will be vital for me in my career as a music teacher. I have one more semester left at QU. My plans after graduation involve moving back out to California with my fiancé and acquiring my California teaching license. Racin A. Coelho ’18

the art of 50 years Robert Lee (Bob) Mejer, distinguished professor of art and curator of the Gray Gallery, is celebrating his 50th year at Quincy University. by Faith Mountain ’19
Mejer’s love for art started at an early age and he began teaching himself to draw at 11. Throughout middle school and high school, Mejer’s love remained as he gained mentors like an instructor at the Southbend Art Center and sculptor, Ivan Mestrovic. Mejer pursued his passion in college and earned a Bachelor of Science in Art and Art Education from Ball State University and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from Miami University. When he began teaching at Quincy University in 1968, Mejer took it upon himself to create the Gray Gallery, located on the main floor of Brenner Library. “There was an important need at QU for a regular art gallery program of exhibitions,” Mejer said. “I founded Gray Gallery with the intention of exposing the academic community and the Quincy 26

community to various styles and media of art. I did not want to compete, nor could I, with the local art center and their expensive shows and manpower, so I switched my focus to one-person exhibitions.” Since its creation, the Gray Gallery has given students, alumni, local artists, and famous artists the opportunity to publicly display their work and expand their audiences. Mejer believes winning the Trustees Award for Scholarly Achievement 1998-99, an award juried by peers from another university, is one of his biggest accomplishments. In 2001, Mejer was honored with distinguished professor status, selected by the University President, for achievement
Faculty Focus | QU and recognition of his profession; contribution of his time and talent to his students, colleagues, profession and to the name and image of Quincy University; for his excellence in teaching and effective advising; outstanding service and living and exemplifying the mission of Quincy University. “My favorite part about working for Quincy University is the people. It’s the faculty, students and staff,” Mejer said. “I love the smallness of the institution and the ability to work one-on-one with each student,” Mejer said. “It’s important to be a practicing artist, especially if you’re a teacher. It’s the art that informs the teaching and you can share it with the students.”
“The most rewarding part about being a teacher is exposing the students to the visual arts and making them believe in themselves. It is all about the students and the importance of nurturing their minds, growth and creativity.” Over the years, Mejer has presented over 65 one-man exhibitions and has had his work included in over 500 statewide, national and international juried competitions. One of Mejer’s more recent shows was his 50-Year Art Retrospective Exhibit, Inscapes, at the Quincy Art Center, March 16–April 25. Mejer limited the works included in the retrospective exhibit to pieces created within his 50 years at Quincy University.
“The show reflected a lot of my interests and my experiences with people and places,” Mejer said. Two people reflected in Mejer’s exhibit include his deceased son, Jason ’95, and his deceased former wife, Mary Beth Mejer Dillard. Mejer passed along his love for art to his son who also taught at Quincy University 2000-11 as an art instructor. Dillard, also passionate for art, taught at Quincy University 1969-76. “People and places influence you and it has an impact on you whether you realize it at the immediate time or as you look back at your work,” Mejer said. “I couldn’t have this show without paying respect to them.”

2017-18 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS
33
Florida Alumni Gathering at The Villages, FL. February 2018
A
s President Conover shared in remarks at the beginning of this publication, Quincy University is focusing on growth. At the same time, we recognize that growth requires a strong financial foundation. For this reason, the funding priorities for the 2017-2018 fiscal year included the QU Fund (annual operations and Endowment), and the Financial Recovery. Thanks to our generous donors, total raised for the fiscal year was $3.9 million. The 2017-2018 QU Fund exceeded its $1 million goal for the eighth consecutive year. We extend a heartfelt thanks to Chairs, Kevin ’90 and Sheri ’92 Reller for their support and leadership of this successful drive. QU Fund donations totaling $712,500 went to support annual operations—ranging from the financial aid that is awarded to nearly all our full-time students, to the technology upgrades in our classrooms, to the maintenance of our beautiful Main and North Campuses. Gifts to Endowment accounted for $351,500 of our QU Fund donations. Support of Endowment is critical to the university’s sustainability. Currently, our Endowment is valued at around $13 million. This is woefully low for a 158-year-old university. In the days and years ahead, we must grow our Endowment— necessary for weathering the ebbs and flows that occur in any organization. I invite you to visit www.quincy.edu/endowment to learn more about this fundraising priority. Including gifts and pledges received during the 20172018 fiscal year, we are currently nearly $6 million to our $7 million Recovery goal. Getting to the finish line is of
utmost importance, as this will better position QU for our accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission in 2020. If you have not already done so, I invite you to please consider making an investment in this critical fundraising effort. Finally, I want to share an update regarding the Forever Forward Campaign that was launched in 2016. You haven’t heard much about the Campaign, as our attention has been focused on the funding priorities noted above. This is not to say that Campaign investments have not significantly impacted our students and campus. We currently are nearly $22 million towards our $25 million goal. Campaign investments have updated the HVAC and roofing in the Chapel, renovated numerous classrooms across campus, and transformed our Center for Science, Connie Niemann Center for Music, Quincy Media Inc. Television Broadcast Studio, QU Stadium, and Jack Mackenzie Soccer Field. To learn more about the Forever Forward Campaign, please visit www.quforeverfoward.com In closing, thank you again to our supporters—alumni, friends, students, parents, and the Quincy community. Your generosity enables us to continue on our pathway of recovery and growth—both very critical to Quincy University’s future. With gratitude,
Julie Bell Vice President for University Advancement

“I feel grateful and blessed to be exposed to so many life changing experiences and opportunities as a QU student. With a continuous rise in the cost of college, I would not be able to attend such an amazing university without the support and generosity of donors.” – Mary Argana ’20 Festus, Missouri
“Ever since I was a little girl, my parents made it a priority to ensure that my siblings and I receive a Catholic education. In a family of eight children, this was a definite sacrifice. I am blessed to say through the combination of academic, Franciscan, and an endowed scholarship, as well as a Resident Life position; my college expenses are covered entirely. The value of the education I am receiving here at QU is priceless. One day, I know I will give to the endowment to support a future student because I believe in the importance of a Catholic education.”
Believe in your Dreams
Argana is the recipient of the Robert Zehnle Memorial Scholarship. She is currently pursuing a degree in political science with a minor in criminal justice. Argana is co-president of the SGA, a student participant of the Presidential Search Committee, is a Resident Adviser, and participates in the Mock Trial Program, QU Choir, and Spiritual Mentor program.

“During our years at Quincy College, our small Music Department was looking to DEVELOP
AND GROW; and the faculty was so gifted
and continually looking for ways to connect with students and refine their teaching method. Because the Music Department was so small, we were asked to participate in multiple performing groups regardless of our specific major. Those opportunities well prepared us for future careers.
QU ALUMNI FOCUS
Dan ’63 & Pam (Wozniak) ’65 Shermann Quincy, Illinois
There is definitely something for everyone at Quincy University. But it’s the intangibles that are most important; the faculty and administrators whose philosophies of personal caring and devotion to student success and happiness in their chosen fields. Dr. Jim Brinkman had a tremendous influence on us. We learned so much from him musically, his work ethic and how he exemplified the Franciscan values of charity and self-sacrifice. The FRANCISCAN
HERITAGE continues to be the backbone of our love
for Quincy University. We believe it is our DUTY
TO SUPPORT Quincy University and the
Franciscan values that we hold so dear. We owe so much to our alma mater because it has made us better people, and we hope all graduates find a way to support this wonderful institution. It is important that Quincy University lasts for another 158 years. ”
