The dossier has been realised in collaboration with Unioncamere and Assocamerestero, with the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Ecological Transition. “We need to find a joint mission to revitalise the economy. necessary but also represents a significant opportunity to make our economy and society more sustainable, healthier, and therefore more future-proof. It is a fundamental challenge that requires the best technological, institutional, political, social and cultural resources. It has to be taken forward without leaving anyone behind, without leaving anyone alone. Europe has accepted this challenge by mobilising significant assets around the themes of cohesion, green transition, digital economy, innovation and by committing to the goal of reducing CO2 emissions to zero by
2050. Italy can give an important contribution to this challenge in many sectors in which it already plays a leading role, as we outline in this dossier, related to a way of producing that is attentive to quality, the environment and human relations. T
he conditions for the birth of Synclean occurred in 1974 when Vincenzo Savoldi, who would have founded the company twenty years later, during a trip to New York was struck by seeing an ecological operator cleaning a sidewalk with the smallest sweeper of the time. Back in Italy, Savoldi decided to become part of this market, and founded, together with another partner, a company named Pulimat, which produced professional sweepers based in Guardamiglio, a town in the province of Lodi. This first experience lasted until 1987, at a time when a thriving market was developing in Italy consisting of a myriad of medium-small companies specialized in industrial cleaning machines. Even today, our country is in first place for production volumes in this sector. In 1988 Floorpul was born, which produced sweepers under its own brand and marketed Comac scrubbers, Euromop trolleys and Pulivapor pressure washers.

Floorpul in the following years expanded considerably on the domestic and on international markets, facing off the demands of customers, who wished to have, in addition to the machines, also the relative spare parts of the parts most subject to wear. Today, more than 25 years after its foundation, this firm keeps its initial policy current and unchanged: total availability towards the customer, ability to offer a completely efficient service. The proposal is developed through an updated site and constant support to customers, with easy-to-consult information on the entire range of accessories for all the most important world brands of floor cleaners, vacuum cleaners, sweepers, single disc machines and pressure washers, such as discs, brushes, pipes, suction motors and tires. This database, built through years of experience in this field, is achieving great international success, allowing the company to export to 70 countries. their competitiveness, taking advantage of the positive market trend, so as to promptly make strategic decisions and make necessary investments, such that the “growth-profitability” combination - evoked commenting on the rankings of the financial statements can be prosecuted. In order to better manage the growing complexity of companies, offer qualified and personalized services to their customers, make the best use of the new tools offered by technological progress, improving their effectiveness but also recovering efficiency, companies must consider the increase of knowledge and skills spread throughout the organization. One of the most authoritative management scholars, Peter Drucker, affirmed that the “knowledge economy” in the age of the internet is an essential element for the competitiveness of companies of any sector and size, primary engine of productivity and growth (Management Challenges for the 21st Century by Peter F. Drucker). We are well aware that knowledge has always been one of the differentiating factors to compete. What has been changing in recent years is the amount of knowledge, increasingly diversified, that is requested by customers from their interlocutors (in all stages of the supply chain) and the impact that digitization has in the codification of it, in its transmission through communication technologies and computer networks, and with the advent of artificial intelligence also in the creation of new knowledge. To compete, it is therefore necessary for companies to become learning organizations, significantly increasing the level of expertise, codifying it and also - as far as possible - protecting it. This strategic objective must be pursued by seeking the best relationship between effectiveness and efficiency. A priority is that all employees acquire new skills and continually adapt them to the innovation of processes, products and services. In a logic of value system, part of this knowledge can also be transferred to strategic customers, to support them in their offer of qualified services to the market.
THE ROLE OF TRAINING
Investing in one’s own training and that of one’s collaborators becomes essential to develop adequate skills. In addition to the technical aspects of the product, training should also cover organizational aspects and relational skills, with emphasis on the use of the tools made available by the “digital revolution”. However, in the knowledge economy paradigm, competence must be defined, on the operational level, as the ability to perform the assigned work tasks not only professionally, but also in accordance with the principle of continuous improvement (Kaizen). Training carried out through targeted and qualified external and internal cour-
and skills within the organization and with customers, suppliers and business partners, in an effective and interactive way.
DIFFICULTIES FOR SMALL BUSINESSES
The development of knowledge and consequent distinctive skills can be more difficult to implement for smaller companies: employees, having to manage multiple roles and activities, may have greater difficulty in developing specialized skills; furthermore, the reduced investment capacity, but also the low attractiveness that smaller companies may have towards qualified personnel, do not facilitate the contribution of new distinctive skills.
THE “KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY” IN THE AGE OF THE INTERNET IS AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENT FOR THE COMPETITIVENESS OF COMPANIES OF ANY SECTOR AND SIZE, PRIMARY ENGINE OF PRODUCTIVITY AND GROWTH -Peter F. Drucker
ses is therefore not sufficient (although it is basic). The company must also create a work environment that encourages and supports the willingness of employees to continuously improve processes, products/services and organization, sharing vision and objectives and acting on working conditions and relationships, remuneration and reward systems. The development and dissemination of skills, precisely because they go beyond the simple acquisition of knowledge, take place above all during daily work and not only in the formality of training courses. In the most knowledge-intensive workplaces there is now the phenomenon of the so-called “learning iceberg”, which indicates that learning useful for the concrete development of skills takes place first of all in the workplace and during daily activity, and only to a lesser extent in structured training courses (Frankenberg, 2007). The tools offered by digitization are then essential to codify and share knowledge
However, if those who lead companies are aware of the importance of these aspects for competitiveness and sustainability, they will be able to act so that the gap does not widen further, increasing structured forms of collaborative exchange of knowledge along the supply chain with suppliers or with other companies that are part of business networks, to which possibly delegate activities that require skills that are not economically approachable individually, or by creating aggregation forms with other synergistic companies. The task of entrepreneurs and managers, aware of the importance of their distinctive wealth of knowledge for competitiveness, will also be to protect it adequately, adopting as far as possible management and contractual tools, from threats such as the theft of sensitive and strategic data or the massive transfer of key personnel, actions that can have extremely negative impacts on corporate sustainability itself. ■ October//2021 |

the International Labour Organization (ILO), these rules promote decent work and a fair and sustainable economic recovery. According to preliminary estimates by the ILO, the economic and job crisis caused by COVID-19 could increase unemployment worldwide by nearly
25 million. Based on possible scenarios outlined by the ILO, estimates indicate an increase in global unemployment ranging from 5.3 to 24.7 million. This would add up to the 188 million unemployed worldwide in 2019. The ILO estimates that between 8.8 and 35 million more people will find themsel-
ves in conditions of in-work poverty around the world. The effects of the crisis on hours worked and on income are massive. In the second quarter of 2020, for example, the updated estimates predict a reduction, globally, in hours worked of 17.3 per cent (compared to the number of hours worked in the fourth quarter of 2019). This reduction equates to 495 million fulltime jobs. This crisis could have a greater impact on some groups of male and female workers, increasing inequalities. Among them, people in less protected and lower paid jobs include young and older workers, female and migrant workers. The ILO’s strategy to limit and contain the effects of COVID-19 on the world of work is structured on four main pillars: ■ protect male and female workers in the workplace; ■ support the economy and the demand for labour; ■ support work and income; ■ find shared solutions through social dialogue. Policies should focus on two immediate objectives: health protection measures and economic support on both the demand and supply side. First, workers and their families need to be protected from health risks by strengthening workplace health and safety policies and measures. Secondly, it is necessary to adopt responses through timely and coordinated policies on a large scale

The International Labor Organization (ILO) is the United Nations specialized agency on labor and social policy issues. Founded in 1919 as part of the Versailles Treaty that ended World War I, the ILO adopts international labor standards, promotes fundamental principles and rights at work, decent work opportunities, the strengthening of social protection and social dialogue on work-related issues. The ILO is the only organization of the multilateral system to have a tripartite structure where representatives of governments, employers’ organizations and trade unions from 187 member countries have the same voice and work together to adopt international standards of the work and formulate international policies and programs that have an impact on the world of work and social policy. RETURN TO WORK IN SAFETY
T
his tool provides guidance to employers, workers and their representatives on preventative measures for a safe return to work in the context of COVID-19.*
1: FORM A JOINT TEAM TO PLAN AND ORGANIZE THE RETURN TO WORK
The company should convene its joint occupational health and safety committee. If there is no such committee, set up a joint group with the same number of members representing the employer and employees. ■ Instruct the group members on the basic principles for the formulation and implementation of prevention and control measures for health and safety at work. ■ Direct the group to develop a work plan that includes measures to be taken to organize a return to work in health and safety conditions. Integrate this work plan into the business continuity plan. ■ Effectively inform all company workers about the group and its work.
2: DECIDING WHEN TO REOPEN, WHO GOES BACK TO WORK AND HOW
■ Carry out a risk assessment to determine the preventive and control measures necessary for a safe return to work. ■ Ensure that prevention and control measures are implemented before resuming work (see points for subsequent action). ■ Establish policies and procedures relating to the number of workers and visitors to the workplace. ■ If possible, plan to reopen in stages from a minimum to a normal level of activity. If taking a step-by-step approach, identify the selected staff who will be present at the workplace during the reopening process. Identify focal points for monitoring prevention and control measures.
20
| October//2021
3: ADOPT TECHNICAL, ORGANIZATIONAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE MEASURES
■ Implement a control hierarchy strategy that prioritizes technical, organizational and administrative measures to prevent disease transmission.
■ Determine and report the maximum capacity of the workplace and its different areas (meeting rooms, offices, workshops, dining rooms, elevators, bathrooms, changing rooms and other common areas) in order to ensure at least a minimum physical distance.
Avoid physical interaction
Ventilation
■ Promote, as far as possible, smart working. ■ Ensure a physical distance of at least 2 meters at all times and in all work situations. ■ Install physical barriers or screens to ensure physical distancing between workers who share a space in the workplace, as well as between workers and third parties, such as customers, suppliers and users.
■ Air the workplace daily, preferably with natural ventilation, by opening the windows. In case of work shifts, repeat natural ventilation between one shift and the next. ■ In case of mechanical ventilation, keep the recirculation with outside air. Avoid the use of individual fans. ■ Ensure proper maintenance/installation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
I
I L O ’ s G u idelines
Avoid the concentration of workers
■ In case of use of collective transport, organize, as far as possible, on a temporary basis, specific mobility options for the company (such as buses hired by the company) in which a minimum distance of 2 meters between people is ensured. ■ Provide staggered or flexible arrival and departure times to avoid the use of collective transport at peak times and crowding at entrances and exits. ■ Adopt work rotation measures, including alternating working days, to avoid large groups of workers. In the case of work shifts, provide for an interval between the departure of one shift and the arrival of another. ■ Limit the capacity of common areas such as dining rooms, bars and changing rooms to allow for a minimum spacing of 2 meters.
22
| October//2021
■ Organize one-way traffic. ■ When resuming activities, avoid external visits and continually reassess this measure. ■ Temporarily limit meal preparation services, favoring package options.
Training and information
■ Provide workers with all the necessary information on the process and measures taken before and after the reopening of the workplace. ■ In accordance with national law, inform staff members of their right to remove themselves from any situation when they have reasonable grounds for believing that there is an imminent and serious risk to their health and safety, and the need to inform their immediate supervisor immediately. ■ Arrange a sign or other graphic material in visible points of the workplace with the preventive measures to be taken in the face of COVID-19.
4: CLEAN AND DISINFECT REGULARLY
■ Thoroughly clean and disinfect the premises before reopening. ■ Prioritize the use of electrostatic sprays for cleaning surfaces and use chemicals approved by national authorities. ■ Increase the frequency of cleaning and disinfection, especially in busy areas. Increase waste collection and keep equipment and surfaces clean and disinfected. ■ Increase cleaning and disinfection measures in common areas. ■ Promote the commitment among workers to keep their workplace clean and tidy, and encourage frequent hygiene breaks. ■ Discourage the sharing of items such as office supplies and tableware. ■ Ensure cleaning and disinfection procedures for goods/supplies/ mail/packages received. ■ Make cleaning schedules and controls visible to all workers/customers.

charge and in sufficient numbers, together with instructions, procedures , training and supervision. ■ Maintain, clean, disinfect and store personal protective equipment according to the instructions.
7: HEALTH SURVEILLANCE
■ Monitor the health status of workers, develop protocols for suspected and confirmed cases of contagion, and provide for the protection of medical and private data, in accordance with national legislation and guidelines. ■ Establish stay-at-home protocols for workers with symptoms or confirmation of contagion. ■ Identify workers who have had close contact with people infected with COVID-19 and direct them to follow the instructions of the medical service or their healthcare professional and health authorities. ■ Communicate confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection to the competent authorities.
8: CONSIDER OTHER DANGERS, INCLUDING PSYCHOSOCIAL ONES
■ Regularly communicate to staff the changes made in the workplace due to COVID-19 and the evolution of the situation. ■ Make psychological counseling services available to workers in case of need. ■ Encourage the promotion of health and well-being in the workplace through sufficient rest, the balance between physical and mental activity and an adequate balance between work and private life. ■ Promote the right to disconnect for remote workers and teleworkers. ■ Provide information on ergonomic risks, particularly during remote work and in COVID-19 adapted workplaces. ■ Implement prevention and control measures for the use and storage of chemicals, especially those used for disinfection during COVID-19.
■ Ensure the functioning of the systems and personnel necessary for safety (maintenance, first aid, emergency services, etc.) ■ Promote a safe and healthy workplace that is free from violence and harassment.
9: REVIEW EMERGENCY PLANS
■ Develop an emergency plan adapted to COVID-19, unless the company had done so previously. ■ As part of the business continuity plan, review and update the emergency and evacuation plan, considering, among other things, the new distribution of workplaces, reduced capacity, access routes, traffic routes and evacuation, meeting points and safety zones, in order to avoid congestion.
10: REVIEW AND UPDATE THE PREVENTION AND CONTROL MEASURES ACCORDING TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE SITUATION
■ Periodically monitor, in consultation with the Occupational Health and Safety Committee or the joint group, the prevention and control measures to determine whether they have been adequate to avoid or minimize risks and identify and implement corrective actions for a continuous improvement. ■ Establish and keep records relating to accidents at work, illnesses and injuries, worker exposure, monitoring of the workplace and the health of workers. ■

THE NEW MILLE PLUS
On the new MILLE PLUS, arrival to the fourth generation, the traditional solidity has been maintained and has been improved still in the control of the dust, in the cargo capacity of the container, in the greater speed of maintenance and not last, improved driving comfort for the operator.
CONSTRUCTION PHILOSOPHY: CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MILLE PLUS SWEEPER
The MILLE PLUS construction philosophy has made this sweeper even more ergonomic, safe, efficient and with improved dust control. It is efficient. It collects dust, without compromise. The suction on the side brushes and the Dust Control Discharge (the suction on the container) allow precise control of the dust, making it an effective sweeper even in dusty environments. The filter surface, one of the largest in its market segment, guarantees perfect dust extraction. It is safe, because the load is rear and therefore the operator sits at the front of the MILLE PLUS and has a complete view of what is in front of him. In addition, the front steering wheel allows maneuvers in very narrow spaces, limiting the risk of bumps even when space is very limited. The front lights and the flashing light on the raised waste container (as standard) indicate the presence of the MILLE PLUS even with poor visibility and allow drivers to see clearly, even in dark environments. It is ergonomic. The operator will find a large seat, in MILLE PLUS, in addition to a comfortable seat and also suitable for long work sessions. Both the seat and steering wheel are adjustable, to perfectly fit the driver and achieve maximum comfort.

Microbes and surfaces: the importance of a CORRECT CLEANING Multiple studies have been published on pathogen transfer between hands and surfaces, and on microbial pathogen survival on skin and on surfaces. These scientific researches shows how a targeted hygiene approach is fundamental to kill or inactivate remaining microbial residues Edited by Simone Ciapparelli

S
cience has demonstrated many times the survival of human pathogens on a variety of surfaces and materials that people routinely contact in their daily lives, and which provide the potential for transmission and resultant disease. This capacity to survive depends upon multiple factors, to include temperature, relative humidity, the physical properties of the surface material, and whether the organisms are embedded in a protective matrix or biofilm, such as respiratory secretions from humans or animals. Thus, many potential human pathogens may survive on hard or soft materials for hours or even days, and be available for transmission to susceptible individuals. We have seen that chronic conditions such as heart, kidney and lung disease are extremely significant risk factors for SARS-CoV-disease. The potential for a virus to be spread via contaminated fomites (inanimate objects that can carry and spread disease and infectious agents) depends first on the ability of the virus to maintain infectivity while on the fomite surface. Intrinsic fac-
tors, like enveloped or nonenveloped virus, fomite properties (porous or non-porous), virus strain, and viral inoculation titer, consistently impact the total virus survival end point, such as hours, days, or weeks. A recent study has determined that SARS-CoV-2 can survive up to 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel, 4 hours on copper, and up to 24 hours on cardboard.
THE SURFACE CONTAMINATION NETWORK
Common touch points in public, work, and home environments can be easily contaminated by individuals who have active disease, are recovering from disease, or have recovered from illness, yet continue to shed viruses. Contaminated surfaces
then serve as reservoirs of a vast microbial community that builds over time as infectious aerosols settle onto surfaces, and the numbers of contaminated hand and finger touches continue to increase. Studies show that hands contaminated with virus can contaminate up to seven other surfaces. When we touch an object, we transfer organisms to that surface and/or accumulate more and/ or different organisms on our hand. In a crowded environment, a surface contaminated by one person can be touched by many others who then touch other surfaces as they move around. And then each of those contaminated surfaces can be touched again by other people, and so the touching and contamination process continues.

This has been referred to as the surface touch network, which allows transfer of microbes between hands and surfaces, resulting in a surface contamination network. An extensive study of microbial contamination and evidence of human contact with public surfaces was conducted over a four-year period across four US cities. Key sites and surfaces sampled included malls (phones, tables, handles, doorknobs, stairs, escalators, elevator buttons, restrooms, countertops); airports (arm rests, luggage carts, water fountains, escalators, phones, restrooms); bus stations (benches, handrails, call button, arm rests, vending machines); banks (ATM buttons, pens, countertops); gyms (benches, counter locker handles, exercise equipment, handrails, doorknobs, restrooms); movie theaters (arm rests, water fountains, phones, video games, doorknobs); parks (benches, water fountains); and personal items (purses, backpacks, briefcases, home surfaces). Results showed that 25% of samples collected were positive for protein, 20% for biochemical markers, 93% for heterotrophic plate count bacteria, 7% for total coliforms, and 1.5% for fecal coliforms. Children’s playground equipment was identified as priority surfaces for additional research on the occurrence of, and potential exposure to, infectious disease-causing organisms. The study researchers also investigated the potential of contamination transfer in the indoor environment. Three office environments were monitored after artificial inoculation of common use surfaces with a copolymer resin tracer. After touching contaminated surfaces, 86% of office workers from three separate offices, transferred the resin tracer to their hands, while 82% transferred the resin to additional surfaces. Following inoculation of a bathroom faucet and exit doorknob, the resin spread most commonly to employees’ hands, faces, phones, and hair. From an inoculated community phone, the resin spread most frequently to hands, face, hair, 30

desktop surfaces, drinking cups, keyboards, pens, and doorknobs. Resin was also found on a nearby drinking water fountain. Finally, from an inoculated copy machine button, resin transferred to copied and original documents, computer equipment, and employees’
hands and faces. Five of the volunteers were accompanied to their homes for additional sampling, and 20 minutes after arriving home, resin was found on all subjects’ hands, personal items (backpacks, purses, keys) and home surfaces (doorknobs, light switches,

countertops, and kitchen appliances). Thus, the combined phases of that study have emphasized the importance of cleaning and disinfection of common touch points, along with attention to hand hygiene, in order to reduce the risk of transmission of disease-causing infectious agents.
INFECTIOUS DISEASE FACTORS
The mere presence of infective viruses on fomites does not translate directly to rates of infectivity of susceptible persons or the extent of the potential pathology associated with the agents. There are three key factors that provide a summary understanding of the potential for infective agents to infect humans and cause disease: the infective dose, the virulence, and the immune status of the individual.
For every infectious disease there is an approximate number of infective agents required for initiation of the disease process, and for some diseases, that infective dose has been determined by animal and/or human experimentation. That factor can be enhanced if the microbial agent possesses virulence, an increased capacity to cause disease due to a variety of genetic-based factors. Lastly, persons with inadequate immune function and/or chronic disease risk factors are rendered more susceptible to the disease-causing ability of infectious agents, especially if those individuals are exposed to a significantly high infectious dose of a virulent organism. Thus, there are many variables associated with the infectious disease process, especially for viral respiratory pathogens, wherein transmission may occur solely as a result of inhalation, or direct contact, or indirect contact, or a combination of two of them, or even all three. Thus, accordingly, there is the benefit of a layered approach to prevention of transmission and disease via wearing a mask, socially distancing, washing and sanitizing hands, and cleaning and disinfecting key surfaces recognized as reservoirs of microbial contamination. Direct hand-to-hand transmission of cold viruses, with subsequent self-inoculation and resultant disease, has been demonstrated in human volunteers. Rhinovirus was transmitted from
experimentally infected volunteers (donors) to susceptible recipients, with 11 of 15 hand-contact exposures resulting in infection. Findings showed that virus on donors’ hands was transferred to recipients’ fingers during 20 of 28 (71%) 10-second hand-contact exposures. In a later study of indirect contact transmission by the same researchers, healthy young adults handled surfaces previously contaminated by infected donors.15 Recipients handled those surfaces for approximately 5 seconds. Five of 10 recipients (50%) developed infection after exposure to virus-contaminated coffee cup handles, and 9 of 16 (56%) became infected after exposure to contaminated plastic tiles.
THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANING AND DISINFECTION
Today, the need for health based cleaning is more important than ever. The targeted hygiene approach involves manual detergent cleaning, followed by the application of an appropriate EPA-registered disinfectant, or the use of a one-step cleaner disinfectant, followed by an additional antimicrobial enhancement provided by the use of a disinfectant wipe or disinfectant spray, with appropriate EPA approval for use against the SARSCoV-2 coronavirus or an acceptable surrogate. of the biocide to kill or otherwise inactivate any remaining microbial residues. SARS-CoV-2 is a virus with a lipid envelope that is very susceptible to dissolution by detergents, which contributes to the virus’s inactivation directly, or by making it very susceptible to the actions of all classes of disinfectants. The importance of surface cleaning, combined with hand hygiene in the non-health care environment was emphasized by the results of a recent applied research study that investigated the spread of viral contamination via worker hands and key surfaces in an office building with 100 employees using 41 individual offices and 116 cubicles. Using a virus surrogate inoculated to a few workers hands and key surfaces, the spread of contamination was demonstrated, and an intervention using hand sanitizer and surface disinfectant was found to significantly reduce viral concentrations on hands and fomites. It was also shown that the surfaces identified as most contaminated were the refrigerator, drawer handles and sink faucets in the break room, along with the push bar on the main exit of the building, and the soap dispensers in the women’s restroom. Results of that study emphasize the value of a layered approach to the reduction of infectious disease transmission risk from contaminated surfaces in public, work environment, and home venues. The combination of hand hygiene practices and fomite cleaning and disinfection, maximizes the reduction of risk for pathogen contact transmission, since both the potential for depositing pathogens onto surfaces, as well as removing them from surfaces via attachment to fingers and hands, are greatly reduced. Once cleaning and disinfection protocols are established for high contact touch points within any particular venue, the key element to reducing human exposures and the potential for infectious agent transmission, is the frequency at which the protocols are carried out. In fact, improved cleaning of floors and desks in schools has been shown to reduce upper respira32

tory symptoms, and the reduction of air pollutants through effective surface cleaning practices and hence, reduced occupant exposures and health risks, was demonstrated in a long-term cleaning effectiveness study The most practical approach is to have cleaning performed at least once each day, with high traffic indoor environments such as office buildings, banks, shopping malls, fitness centers, etc., requiring cleaning and disinfection more often throughout the day, especially during times of epidemics and pandemics.
Recently, the time for the reestablishment of microbial contamination on student desks in schools was determined. The study showed that as the cleaning of desks physically removed about 50% of bacteria, fungi, and human cells, a full recovery of the surface contamination concentrations occurred within 2-5 days. ■ Source: Ciri, Contact Transmission of Infectious Disease Agents: The Science and Implications for Cleaning and Disinfection of Surfaces

axon produces, in Italy and with italian quality, multifunction trolleys, mops, dust mop for professional brooms, microfiber cloths and sponges, glass cleaning equipment, broom handles and frames, for cleaning and sanitizing environments. The history of Taxon began in 1953 by being the first to import into Italy an idea born in the United States: the mop, improving and patenting a new fastening system that was simpler and more resistant. After the productive and commercial development of the first improved version of the mop, Taxon focuses on the production of professional equipment for cleaning environments. Included in its catalog additional items for professional use with materials of the highest quality for the longest duration. In the Borgo Fornari warehouse in addition to textile items, today Taxon also produces aluminum articles (handles, fleece supports, telescopic poles)
and also assembles its various plastic items, in particular the multipurpose floor washer trolleys, including a wringer and several multifunction trolleys. In 2017 and 2018 Taxon introduced two new machines, unique on the market, designed to automate and standardize the production of mops and dust mops and that allow you to respond promptly to requests and offer customized prints on textile items. Among these products are those of the new microfiber lines for which we buy the best quality raw material and that we
work for mops, dust mops, cloths for dry and wet cleaning. The recent inclusion in the catalog of the QO-KART plastic multifunction trolley, allows Taxon to offer end customers tools capable of simplifying and speeding up their operations. Raw materials of the highest quality with a high percentage of recycled plastic, make the QO-KART line ecological and resistant at the same time. The national production of the components qualify the line as a zero km product and the assistance service that provides spare parts of the components for the rare, but always possible cases of breakage, makes the QO-KART trolleys, even more eco-friendly, reducing the amount of waste to the minimum possible. The quality of taxon products and the attention of its customer service is already known in several foreign countries, European and non-European, where the company achieves more than 30% of its turnover.

The power of STEAM
S
everal studies demonstrate the effectiveness of heat in eliminating viruses and bacteria. From this premise the research of STI - Steam Industry and the offer of products that meet the most varied cleaning and sanitizing needs starts. Laura Passuello’s experience. The ongoing pandemic forces us to rethink our way of life. Cleaning and sanitizing are of utmost importance in dealing with the emergency. WHO itself reiterated the effectiveness of heat in eliminating viruses. Furthermore, a careful study indicates that a temperature of 71°C is recommended to kill most viruses. With this in mind, the professional products of STI - Steam Industry offer the right solution. The company was founded in 2009 from the twenty-year experience of the Passuello family in the steam cleaning sector.
WHAT IS YOUR COMMITMENT TODAY AT THE HELM OF THE COMPANY?
“We have treasured past experience, inheriting the commitment and dedication that has always characterized our work, at the same time we have made continuous innovations and improvements. In a historical moment characterized by an invisible virus, STI is a safe and reliable partner to eliminate and contain the problem. One of the most effective methods of killing germs, bacteria and viruses is steam. Our professional products have a temperature in the boiler ranging from 160°C to 185°C according to the power of the machine, there is a natural thermal drop at the point of release of the steam but the temperature
is well above the recommended 71°C. The total and complete sanitization of every environment and surface through the use of steam at regular intervals therefore helps not to spread viruses”.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING STEAM?
“Steam is ecological, it is a natural element that allows you to thoroughly clean different surfaces without using detergent. It sanitizes the environment, eliminating mites, bacteria, molds and germs, thanks to the high temperatures reached. Clinical tests show that a 5 second steam flow at 140°C can totally eliminate the bacterial load. In addition, it involves less effort for the user because it completely dissolves dirt, even the most difficult, without having to scrub hard. Furthermore, the steam flow manages to reach points that would be impossible to clean with standard
equipment. All this translates into a saving of time and money because cleaning is faster and no detergents are used”.
STI - STEAM INDUSTRY STRONGLY BELIEVES IN MADE IN ITALY. COULD YOU BRIEFLY TELL US ABOUT THE RANGE YOU OFFER TO THE MARKET?
“We currently produce and serve two macro areas: one linked to domestic use, the other meets the most varied cleaning and sanitizing needs of the professional world. The domestic line is a complete range, as it is made up of both steam-only products and steam&vacuum products. Their uses are manifold as they can be used to clean and sanitize every room and surface of the house, but also of premises and companies. STI’s range of professional machines is divided into two lines: Gaiser (steam-only products) and Comby (steam&vacuum products). The areas of use are varied: from the food industry to catering, from hotels to cleaning in public transport, from the mechanical industry to healthcare (hospitals, medical, dental and veterinary practices) “. www.stindustry.it

Some tips to improve the ratio between received and not received feedbacks Fabrizio Pirovano
Marco Monti
To reply or not to reply? That is the QUESTION!
D
o you ever get the feeling that your emails fall on deaf ears? It also happens to you to write to someone and get no reply? If you too are victims of non-responses and experience the prejudicial anxiety of having done something wrong, or that the digital interlocutor is an arrogant and self-referential person - that is, a boor - then we will explain what you can do. During a course on digital communication, a client asked us: “When I send an email, can I know if the recipient is reading it?”. We were sorry to give him a negative answer. In fact some mail systems offer the possibility to ask for the receipt, but leave the recipient the courtesy to confirm. This is also the case on WhatsApp - you will think - but, obviously, WhatsApp makes us less fussy privacy defenders. All this, of course, does not apply to Certified Electronic Mail, which has the purpose of having valid confirmation of receipt. Remember, however, that receiving the email does not mean reading its content. 36
| October/2021
We are aware that it may seem absurd: “If you receive an email, it also means that you will read it ...”. But it’s not always like this. We had, some time ago, a weird conversation with a public office, to which we had sent a document. Not having obtained what we expected, we asked for information on the document we had sent and they did so replied: “Yes, certainly we have received it but we have not registered it. So you send it back to us”. Obviously we were thrilled. Is there a remedy? Maybe yes or maybe no, it depends. Let’s say that there are, however, tricks to encourage the good habits of others.
MAKE MORE ASSUMPTIONS
If they don’t answer you, they are rude, or: ■ they may not have received the email; ■ you may not have received the response they sent you; ■ you may have deleted their answer by mistake; ■ may find their answer in the spam folder. Can you exclude, with absolute certainty, that the absence of a reply cannot fall into one of the options just indicated? Certainly it could already be that the receiver of your email is a rude person, but what about the other hypotheses? Before plotting your revenge, consider that in all these hypotheses the responsibility is not of the receiver, but it is yours. Warning to those who do not respond by choice: if you, who are reading, belong to that population that does not acknowledge receipt and does not give any sign when receiving an email, because it thinks it makes a serious and very busy person to postpone the
moment in which to pay attention to the writer, like leaving, for example, the client in the waiting room before an appointment ... Well, know that it doesn’t work at all! Both from a commercial and personal point of view. Today this behavior is read exactly as we described it at the beginning of this story: the behavior of a boor (even if a really very busy one).
SOME TIPS
Start with a greeting, and finish with a greeting. Writing an email is like starting a speech. Would you ever start a speech without saying hello? Starting with a greeting and, above all, with a few words of interest towards your interlocutor, will put him in a better listening condition. As a result, he will also be more willing to answer you. When you close an email, in the same way, always remember to say goodbye. Have you ever experienced the unpleasant sensation of getting the phone hung up on you? Not saying goodbye at the end of an email would give the same feeling. If you don’t like it, the respondent doesn’t like it either. A consideration: A traditional “Hello Mr. xxx. I hope things go well”, or “Hi xxx. I hope you’re fine” or, again “Hi xxx. How are you?”, and then the continuation of your message, is a good way to start an email. How to close it? Quite simply with a “waiting for your courteous feedback, I wish you a good evening. See you soon” or “Thank you and see you soon”. Don’t forget to add your signature, even if you have already set it automatically in the mailer.
SET A GOOD EXAMPLE, REMEMBER TO ALWAYS ANSWER
We know people who always respond to whatever you send, from the invoice “Thank you, I will send it immediately in payment”, to viruses “Thank you, I received a strange email from your account and my computer exploded. Could it be a virus?”. Unfortunately, these kind people are in the minority, crushed by the numerical superiority of those who do not answer even if you tell them that you have found the wallet they had lost the day before.
IS THERE A QUESTION TO ANSWER?
If you want an answer, make sure you ask a question. It may sound trivial, but without a question, what should your reader answer? Always make sure that there is one at the end of your email, that it is formulated in a simple way and that it is direct: “what do you think?” is better than “I ask you to tell me what you think”.
AVOID DISJUNCTIVES
Disjunctive conjunctions have the function of introducing an alternative between two words or two concepts: “Do you prefer the file in pdf or word format?”. Consequently, answering yes or no is not expected. Yet it happens. Minor dual choice (or scissor) questions, like the one above, assume that the main choice has already been made (in the case mentioned, that the person wants to receive that file). During a face-to-face dialogue they work, because an unclear answer can be remedied immediately with a second question, but this is not possible in the case of emails. Our suggestion is to avoid the problem: “I’ll send you a pdf, okay?”.
ESTABLISH AN ADVANTAGE FOR THE RESPONDENT
The more profitable it is for your reader to reply to your message, the more likely it is for you to get a reply. Why should the reader answer you if what you write is not interesting for him/her too? Without a good reason, your reader will find it more attractive to watch the paint dry than to respond
to you. So, act accordingly. An example? “As soon as I get feedback from you, it will be my care to activate me and I will keep you updated on developments with the right care”.
THESE ARE SIMPLE SUGGESTIONS
We do not assure you that they will generate an incessant flow of replying emails, but try to think: how many of these simple rules do you apply systematically? Starting to apply these rules is very likely to improve the ratio between received and missed responses - it certainly will not worsen it - and will undoubtedly increase your professional image. ■ October/2021 |

ISSA PULIRE 2021
A breath of FRESH AIR for professional cleaning!
The international exhibition, hosted for the last time in three Veronafiere exhibition halls, gives an injection of confidence and important signs of recovery in the market. The health emergency linked to the Covid 19 pandemic is at the center of the technological innovation proposed in the showcase by the companies and the interventions of the speakers at the Issa Pulire Theater. Maurizio Pedrini
Sectoral journalist and Technical Director of Dimensione Pulito
I
t was not an easy task for the professional cleaning sector to create a moment of sharing like this, after more than a year and a half of absence from the exhibitions, following the Covid 19 pandemic. There are many psychological barriers, reluctance, mistrust and uncertainty about the future, consequences of an unexpected and unpredictable period. A certain skepticism hovered, quite widespread, on the eve of the opening of ISSA PULIRE 2021, both because 40

some historical brands of important manufacturers of machinery and chemical products, for various reasons, had long ago announced their absence, and for the objective difficulties connected with the participation of exhibitors and visitors, forced to contend with green passes, quarantines and other small or large health and bureaucratic hitches. Yet, surprisingly, the twenty-fifth edition of this exclusive biennial event, a privileged “showcase” of the Made in Italy in the sector, staged at Veronafiere
from 7 to 10 September, did not betray the best expectations. Indeed, in some ways, it has definitely surpassed them.
DEFEATED THE PESSIMISM OF THOSE WHO FEARED THE FLOP
We can therefore speak of a challenge won by the organizers of Issa Pulire Network - supported by the precious contribution of Afidamp - convinced that the sector needed, after decidedly gloomy times, a boost of positivity, in
the sign of a restart. Thus the expectations of the 300 exhibitors - distributed over 12,000 square meters - and of the 10,037 visitors (of which over 14% foreigners), were not disappointed at all. In short, the manufacturing companies with their rich range displayed in an elegant showcase in Pavilions 2,5, 6, and the ten leading cleaning and Facility Management companies, gathered in the stands set up at the ISSA Pulire Theater, in Hall 4, have more than one reason to smile, taking stock of their difficult choice. The widespread feeling, for those like us who lived the three intense Veronese days on the field, is that the participants in the event have definitely left the dark days of the pandemic behind, to look to the future with moderate optimism. Of course, the comparison with the previous edition, in terms of turnout, was for the first time in negative balance: in 2019, in fact, PULIRE had concluded with 17,000 visitors (+ 6% on 2017), over 30% of whom were foreigners. But the pessimists, who feared the flop, and there were not a few, went disappointed. The first test passed by ISSA PULIRE 2021, given the times, was that of the maximum safety conditions guaranteed to guests: an objective achieved thanks to the accreditation of the Veronafiere exhibition center to the GBAC STAR program, the only one designed to help facilities to establish a complete system of cleaning, disinfection and prevention of infectious diseases.
THE PRODUCTS CREATED TO RESPOND TO THE HEALTH EMERGENCY
Covid 19, which has changed our lives so heavily for two years now, finally making cleaning, sanitation and hygiene the absolute protagonists, was the focus of attention. This time, in fact, the innovation of manufacturers of machinery, equipment and chemical products has focused, first of all, on solutions and products designed and manufactured in response to the health emergency, many of which are the result of the precious collaboration between institutions, universities, companies of services and manufacturers.
Likewise, in the Issa Pulire Theater the multiple scientific, health and social implications linked to the spread of the virus have been exhaustively treated, especially in the close relationship between safety linked to cleaning procedures and disease prevention, catalyst of very interesting communications from experts (doctors, managers, university professors, representatives of foundations and production categories, etc.), with over forty interventions by the ten multiservice companies, among the most important in Italy, and sector associations, representing the entire cleaning supply chain, from producers to end users.
Danese’s farewell appeared sad, mirroring that of the city on the banks of the Adige. It was a little distracted - compared to the past - on the occasion of the last edition of the important exhibition lived at home which, thanks to PULIRE, for years became the undisputed Italian capital of cleaning and hygiene. The president of Veronafiere, offering his best wishes to the organizational staff in view of the handover at Fiera Milano, proudly retraced the stages of the growth of PULIRE, from a small exhibition organized by a small group of exhibitors of cleaning machines and equipment, to the International show known and appreciated in Europe and in the world.
ISSA PULIRE NETWORK IS ALREADY LOOKING TO MILAN 2023
ISSA PULIRE THEATER, AN ARENA WHERE TO REFLECT ON THE FUTURE SCENARIOS OF THE SECTOR
The most substantial novelty of the three-day exhibition, needless to hide it, was the new brand taken on by the historic event, born in 1982 and landed in Verona for the first time in 1985, and that had been located there since 1991. ISSA PULIRE Network made its debut for the latest edition of the Fiera in Verona, with great ambitions for growth. The largest international platform dedicated to trade fairs for professional cleaning, facility management and events for high-level professionals, was presented at the inaugural ceremony, which was attended by Toni D’Andrea, CEO of ISSA PULIRE Network, Michel de Bruin, president of ISSA EMEA Council, John Barret, Executive Director of ISSA, Giuseppe Riello, president of Afidamp, and Maurizio Danese, president of Veronafiere.
Another new element proposed by this edition, as we said, was the space, with relative stands located inside the Fair in Pavilion 4, dedicated to ten of the largest service companies - Facility Management, and to a leading company in the management and information system for the continuous testing of cleaning and disinfection service contracts. In this context, a special “arena” was created, the ISSA PULIRE Theater, complete with a green parterre, on which an elegant sitting room has been created, in front of which special stands have been erected. The authoritative voices of many interpreters of the sector are echoed in this area, very attractive also from a scenographic level, equipped with a maxi October/2021 |

screen, committed to tackling the most current problems of professional cleaning. In the context of ISSA LAB - this is the name chosen to define the space dedicated to discussion on the major issues of the present and the future that affect the sector - four different types of areas sensitive to the issues addressed have been identified. On them there were speeches of about twenty minutes which essentially concerned good practices, innovative ideas and new technologies. An experience, certainly appreciable, to give voice, in the moment of recovery, to the entire cleaning supply chain, sharing skills, methodological and professional experiences on problems and solutions, procedures and processes, to raise and disseminate quality content and security in the provision of the service.
THE AFIDAMP SPACE, A PLACE FOR MEETING, DISCUSSION AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
For the first time, Afidamp did not appear as organizer of the event, but in the original role of association, interpreter of projects and multiple initiatives at the service of members,

committed to promoting moments of information, study and debate on highly topical issues for the professional cleaning sector. This was the best way to reaffirm the centrality and mission of the association, founded in 1981, which celebrated its fortieth anniversary in Veronafiere. A cultural and professional vocation enhanced thanks
to the constant commitment of the director, Stefania Verrienti, and of all the staff represented by her precious collaborators. In Hall 6 stand D2/1, the association that brings together Italian producers and distributors in the sector organized a series of meetings which were attended, as speakers, by representatives of companies, trade associations and suppliers. Very interesting, in particular, are the in-depth analyzes dedicated to the CAM (Minimum Environmental Criteria) topic, three months after their entry into force, as well as the analysis of the traditional, highly anticipated survey conducted by Afidamp, which annually photographs the trend of the sector in terms of production and distribution, this time carried out in collaboration with CERVED. Without forgetting the updates dedicated to the machinery sector, but above all the deepening of the National Plan 4.0, with a focus on incentives for the professional cleaning industry. Finally, the 40th anniversary celebration ceremony offered the occasion for the delivery of Senior Member and Best Member awards to particularly deserving personalities that are part of Afidamp. ■

Water has never been so important to COMAC
W
ater is a precious resource, above all if we consider that the amount of freshwater available to the inhabitants of the planet is constantly decreasing. It is a substance that is used in large quantities, even during the easiest cleaning operations. Comac has always been sensitive to this theme, and for this reason, has wanted to respond to the issue of safeguarding water resources with solutions that conserve it. Water has never been so important to Comac, this is the reason why the company created the #comac4water project that is focused on finding the best solutions for recycling water.
NON STOP CLEANING: THE ON-BOARD RECYCLING SYSTEM FOR COMAC’S FLOOR SCRUBBERS
Comac solutions for recycling and reusing the water used during floor cleaning operations include the Non Stop Cleaning system. The NSC is a recycling system installed directly on board Comac C85 NSC floor scrubber that allows the machine to work by reusing the water used for scrubbing. This is an extremely innovative yet practical solution, which provides a great advantage in economic terms and minimizes the environmental impact of cleaning operations. C85 NSC is part of the #comac4water concept as the scrubbing water can be reused for five days (with an estimated use of 3 hours a day), thus reducing freshwater consumption. It also allows the operator to avoid the effort of having to empty and refill the tanks of the scrubbing machine several times.
THE THREE PHASES OF THE NSC SYSTEM
The concept of the Non Stop Cleaning is easy to understand as the system comprises three phases: in the first,
44
| October/2021
water is used normally and collected by vacuuming. In the second phase, water is filtered and purified, completing the water recycling phase. In the third phase, water is therefore available for use again. To meet the most specific cleaning needs, also C85 NSC PREMIUM is available. This version is equipped with an additional filtration stage to obtain even more purified water, thus working with clear water. A Comac C85 floor scrubber equipped with Non Stop Cleaning Premium system, not only reduces the unproductive solution loading and unloading times but, above all, saves up to 80% of water and 90% of chemical. This is an high economical advantage, that minimizes the environmental impact of floor cleaning operations without compromising the cleaning quality.
OUR CLIMATE IS WATER
Currently, approximately two billion people around the world are living in water-stressed areas. This will be the situation of more than half the world’s population by 2050 if no action is taken. Not to mention the fact that climate change is already greatly intensifying the world water crisis – intensifying floods, prolonging droughts, and more. In many ways, the worst impacts of the climate crisis will be felt through water. With this in mind, Comac offers technologies that are designed to respect the environment while helping cleaning professionals use resources more responsibly, at the same time as offering a range of advantages when it comes to cutting cleaning costs, granting more working autonomy, saving time and improving cleaning results. www.comac.it

Mechanize transportation VEHICLE CLEANING
T
he means of transport are crossed every day by a continuous flow of people sharing the same small space for short or even long journeys. Such environments clearly require frequent cleaning, both to ensure that the vehicle is comfortable for the next passengers and to safeguard their health. Dirt conditions resulting from the high number of people would require a mechanical cleaning, which is more reliable and through, but very often, due to the small size of the space, manual cleaning prevails, even if it is slower, and the results are inconsistent. Moreover, in order not to interfere with the usual activities and to guarantee the service continuity, cleaning must be quick and effective. For this reason, it is essential to use equipment that meet the specific requirements of this kind of environments.
Fimap’s FV-CART vacuum cleaner and the Orbitizer orbital machine are the ideal equipment in transportation sector for their exceptional transportability, given by their design and being battery powered. Both models are designed to work where space is narrow and cluttered, and flexibility is required to clean hardto-reach areas. The battery power allows to move without restrictions, since cleaning operations, especially when performed on different vehicles,
are not constrained by the position of a power outlet or by a cable length. On trains you can clean one car after another without interruptions. Moreover, being a lithium battery, it can be charged even partially at any time, which make the FV-Cart and Orbitizer machines always available.
With its small, rectangular base, only 11 cm high, it can be used to clean under seats, into corners, along edges and even steps, both horizontally and vertically. The junction connection allows to go around obstacles and furnishings and thoroughly clean even the tightest places such as toilets. Orbitizer provides intensive cleaning action thanks to the power of 3800 oscillations per minute generated by the orbital movement. The effectiveness of the mechanical action enables deep cleaning with reduced consumption of water and chemicals, which are just sprayed when needed. Therefore, drying is very quick and the vehicle is available again in a short time.
WITH FV-CART AND ORBITIZER THERE ARE NO UNREACHABLE CORNERS
FFM, THE IMPORTANCE OF MONITORING CLEANING OPERATIONS
FV-Cart is a trolley vacuum cleaner that can be easily moved anywhere. The stair climbing wheels enables to change environment even when there are steps to climb and provide excellent stability. With FV-CART, you can switch from vacuuming floors, to seats, small surfaces, compartments and overhead lockers, and even crevices and hidden places in the same cleaning intervention, thanks to the several nozzles available. The standard set of nozzles is always at hand, housed inside the trolley. In addition, there are further optional nozzles and accessories available to meet more specific needs. These include the Hepa filter, which filters out even the fine dust and returns clean air to the environment. Orbitizer is an ideal orbital machine for cleaning small and cluttered areas. It is suitable for all type of floors, including the most common vehicle floorings such as linoleum, PVC and textiles, simply by changing the floor pad.
In addition to considerably improving the quality and reliability of the results, FV-CART and Orbitizer machines allow to track cleaning operations with the FFM – Fimap Fleet Management system. Traceability offers important advantages. On the one hand, being able to see the position and any anomalies in real time increases control, because it is possible to check whether the activity meets the plans and to take action promptly if necessary. On the other hand, knowing the actual duration of interventions enables a better planning, based on real and not approximate data, thus improving productivity and results. Finally, since the activity is recorded, you can also document the cleaning tasks carried out, a function that is particularly useful in the case of tenders, when detailed reporting on the execution of the cleaning project is required. www.fimap.com

A FRAGRANT FUTURE in the world of PEST CONTROL This world is opening up with ever greater determination to technological innovations, understanding that the key to success is hidden in product innovation, in order to be able to differentiate itself also in the years to come Luca Ilorini
T
he universe of pest control represents the most distant that can be appreciated at the moment from the colorful and artistic world of perfumes, but in a constantly evolving sector such as that of disinfestation, which makes innovation an added value and the key to ensuring a rosy future, the distance between the two aforementioned worlds is decidedly flattened and the perfume can become a valid ally for controlling pests. A trend that is becoming increasingly decisive thanks to the presence of research institutes that have decided to invest in the segment, in order to find new solutions that can be more oriented towards environmental sustainability.
PERFUMES FOR NEW PESTICIDES
Probably many people would be able to recognize methyl benzoate by smelling it: the fruity and winter floral aromas of the natural compound make it a popular ingredient for the creation of perfumes used for the production of soaps and shampoos; snapdragons and petunias emit methyl benzoate to attract bees for pollination and the insects themselves 56
| October/2021
also produce it as an attractant. Chemist Aijun Zhang, with the Invasive Insect Biocontrol and Behavior Laboratory of the Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, in the United States, has found a new possible use for methyl benzoate: an ecological control for pests, including spotted wing drosophila (SWD), an invasive species from Asia. First found in California in 2008, SWD has rapidly spread to the United States and can cause significant damage to fruit crops, especially berries; there are currently few effective measures against this pest and the control of the research in question makes possible to create a new bio-based pesticide based on an inexpensive chemical, whose residue lasts a relatively short time in the environment. Zhang then tested methyl benzoate against other agricultural pests, including the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), diamondback moth, and tobacco hornworm, finding that it can kill all stages of these insects - egg, nymph, and adult - although it works better against smaller insects than larger ones. In early tests, methyl benzoate is 5 to 20 times more toxic to the eggs of BMSB, diamondback moths and tobacco hornworms than a conventional pyrethroid insecticide, a mixture of sulfur and pyrethrin, and some organic products on the market. It is also being studied whether the use of methyl benzoate in low doses can help control Varroa mites, the major threat for honey bees nowadays. In addition to being a synthetic raw material, methyl benzoate is a natural component of essential oils such as ylang ylang and jasmine, from which it can be extracted with separation procedures of the single component, albeit in small traces in the latter.
FRAGRANCES TO DISINFECT: BETWEEN REAL EFFECTIVENESS AND VANITY
Fragrances, alone, could hardly perform an effective pest control action if used as the only element for disinfestation but it is necessary to use a traditional method, especially in the case of post-infestation, where only ‘scented’ repellents are not effective. Undoubtedly, there are some ‘smells’ that can be used in order to prevent and discou-
rage infestation, perhaps in accordance with a more widely used solution based on classical methods. While lavender, from literature sources, is particularly indigestible for fleas, on the contrary there are hints of cinnamon, citrus fruits and the aromas of tea tree to discourage spiders, and the combination of cloves and turmeric is useful to prevent the invasion of ants: as we can see, the combinations and preferences of odors to which the individual insect families are sensitive are numerous and varied: a situation that goes well with the possibility of creating fragrances to be diffused in the air during or before the actual disinfestation phase in order to have the different olfactory notes together with each other and to obtain a large scale effect that is active on different species, at least as regards the perfuming phase. Using fragrances, especially if natural, can help players in the pest control sector to boast the presence of a claim linked to non-invasive and non-toxic solutions, helping at least partially to ‘fight’ some of the clichés usually associated with the world of pest control: fragrances represent an excellent solution that arises at the interface between an effectiveness, not easily demonstrable, and which must be supported by more classic solutions, and the ‘vanity’ or hedonism that the world of essences brings with it and that brings them into a position of future investment in terms of research for future potential in the world of pest control.
THE CASE OF PEPPERMINT OIL
The insecticidal activity of the essential oil of Mentha piperita is extremely known against numerous insects, especially mosquitoes as vectors of diseases, and is attributable to the presence of menthol, which is the main aromatic compound of the oil: the minor compounds, i.e. menthone, β-caryophyllene, mentyl acetate, isomenthone, menthyl acetate limonene, α-pinene and pulegone, showed less or no activity against the same insect species and a similar investigation was conducted on the post synthesis derivatives of menthol and their abatement and mortality effect was carefully evaluated. The October/2021 |
57
T
T rends
synthesis of the derivatives followed by studies on the structure-activity relationship identified several derivatives, for example mentyl chloroacetate, menthyl dichloroacetate, mentyl cinnamate, menthone glyceryl acetal, thymol, α - terpineol and mugethanol, with a greater insecticidal activity than the compound parent L - menthone. In conclusion, in the ester derivatives of L-menthol the optimal activity depends on the size and shape of the ester group and on the presence of chlorine atoms in the ester group, furthermore in the structurally correlated derivatives of L-menthol the optimal activity depends on the aromaticity, the degree of unsaturation, the position of the hydroxy group and the type of functional group. In the professional pest control market there are numerous players worldwide, especially from America and Australia, who have worked to create disinfection solutions with peppermint, boasting the use of safe products with a claim of naturalness combined with the presence of a 100% natural essential oil able to guarantee excellent coverage over time, a parameter highly appreciated by end customers and decisive in many dynamics of assigning the disinfection of large public spaces, since it represents an important added value for those who want to have a final result of absolute quality.
FRAGRANCES IN PESTICIDES: AN ALREADY PRESENT TREND IN THE US WORLD
A model to be inspired by for a safe use of fragrances combined with the world of pesticides and the universe of pest control is the American one, since the United States has long since identified a robust model that allows a safe use of fragrances in finished products such as pesticides. On the EPA website (United States Environmental Protection Agency), a continuously updated tool has been available for some time; this tool allows people to 58
| October/2021
proceed with the registration of the fragrances to be included in the product, in order to guarantee total traceability of the chemical composition of the fragrance in case of controls and, above all, in the unfortunate scenario of the occurrence of an adverse event. This document provides guidance for the Pilot Fragrance Notification Program (PFNP) of the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP), for registrants seeking to
that all components of the proposed new fragrance are included in the Fragrance Ingredient List (FIL) and that the concentration of the fragrance to be added or changed does not exceed 1.0% (by weight) of the total composition of the pesticide product: in this way it is understood how, through the adoption of stringent parameters, the risk of unexpected variations at the level of final use of the finished product
add new or modify existing fragrances into new or currently registered pesticide products. In addition, registrants seeking to register new products can now participate. The pilot project ran for two years and started in September 2011. This guidance document includes eligibility criteria for participation, submission, requirements and instructions for submission, including certification forms and the audit procedure if any. Registrants must certify
and consequently of possible undesirable effects at the level of use of the final article during the pest control phase is minimized. Traceability at the highest levels has allowed the United States to achieve, in recent years, high quality standards in the world of pest control, another feature that has made this country a driving nation to look at with a spirit of emulation, as regards the use of fragrances related to the world of pest control. ■

S
pray Team is a company born in 1994 from the will of a group of technicians determined to make the most of their twenty years of experience gained in the construction of atomizers and nebulizers. In addition to immediately producing traditional trailed sprayers, such as the Start and Wind models, mainly used in agriculture, Spray Team perfects the construction and sale of equipment and machines for urban disinfestation and disinfection and for the treatment of public and urban greenery. To date, the agricultural sector covers only 0.5% of production, as the company has decided to invest heavily on the pest control market: in fact, there are now thousands of companies that produce atomizers, saturating this market area. In pest control sector, however, there are few manufacturers and competition is reduced to a minimum. In mid-2019 Spray Team signed a partnership contract with Gate Srl, a university spin-off and an innovative start-up, which has perfected electrochemical technology. The particular conformation of the electrolytic cell developed by Gate allows to carry out the electrolysis process of water containing chlorides, at neutral pH, with the maximum production of hypochlorous acid, even starting from only the chlorides contained in the mains water of mineral derivation, without further additions. This process is capable of generating large volumes of highly disinfectant water, which, rather than for urban disinfestation, is used in environmental sanitation. Spray Team has
also developed atomizers for spraying the electrolyzed water, designing specific nozzles capable of obtaining dry air. It is with this technology that the company intends to get into the hospitality sector.
