Allotmentpark Tuinwijck opening up to an experience of the landscape for everyone Masterplan My first thoughts of the allotmentpark Tuinwijck were the feeling of a labyrinth. Everything was turned inwards and I asked myself: ‘‘What is behind this wall?’’. I wanted to give everyone from visitor till owner the same experiences of the landscape behind the allotmentpark. To do this I looked on historical maps and used the historical waterstructure to open up the allotmentpark to the landscape. The new water structure creates new spaces for the landscape inside the park. Labyrinth feeling

A creative hidden community

How can the hidden character of the Ceuvel contribute to Amsterdam North? Masterplan

In this collage you can see the atmosphere I have in mind for this place. There can be an art exhibiton inside the open steel construction in front of the buildings or through the windows or on the squares. In addition, there are restaurants, a community centre and a park where people can meet each other.

B’

Within the sections, the most important component is the meeting places. An example is the first section, which shows the relation between the park and the high building on the edge. The other sections show the relations between the community and the work places with different type and sizes of meeting places.

Fascination Community

Concept Hidden character

Creative business

A hidden place, with a creative community. Serving as a connection between the green structure of North

Harbour structure

Analysis (conclusions) Infrastructure • Good infrastructure • Central location • Weird entrance.

Green, water, history • The purpose of building the Johan van Hasseltkanaal was to connect Amsterdam-North. This never happend. Right now it’s used by the hotel, but it feels like a missed opportunity. • No connections within the bigger green structure.

Typologies & feeling • The Ceuvel is a place between the high buildings, industry & garden villages. • It’s a unique creative hidden place with lots of potentional for Amsterdam North.

• The Ceuvel itself focusses on circularity by recycling and soil purification. Entrance street Ceuvel

Infrastructure map

Green and water structure map

My experience

Identity the Ceuvel - Creative hidden community Green structure: • Purification plants • Allotment gardens for self-sufficiency • More natural banks Community/living • Tiny houses • House boats • Meeting places • Reused materials of demolished buildings for new construction. • Car-free zone • Living and working together (reference to history garden villages) Creative work environment • Art studio’s and other workspaces • Reuse existing buildings • Exhibition space • Events/ meeting space Hidden character • Buildings on the edge • Water edge 7

Elaboration of concept Creative work environment

Hidden character - height map

Green structure In this concept, we see that the Ceuvel is used as a connection between the green structures. In this map you can see that this connection is provided by a public park among the area. The collective green are spaces for the community. But there can also be visitors. The private space is only for the owners themselves.

The buildings on the outside of the area will be higher then the inside. This in order to make a border on the outside to keep the inside area secret. In the illustration above, the hidden character provided is shown.

• A couple of buildings will stay. • The other buildings will be reused to build the new buildings. • Most of this buildings will be creative/innovative businesses, start-ups.

Program

Community/living

The buildings on the edges will be mixed with student housing, cafés, shops, art studios. The functions are mainly on the ground floor with housing on top of it.

Residents of North: • Mostly young families, age 25-65 Target group: • A new target group for North. • Students & starters or artists. > A space for affordable housing and a place to live near work.

All ages Young families & Cohabit 25-45 25 - 65+ New: Starters, students

The whole area will contain a mix of creative businesses, art studio’s and the living spaces to get a lively and unique environment.

Event terrain

Within the area designated for events, a transition from a tiny house community and houseboats towards more large scale workplaces can take place. The event terrain is also a meeting place for the community and a place to use their creativity.

8

Routes

The green structure is followed by the routes. These show you the cycling route and walking routes within the area. The cycling path is a connection between the green structures. If you arrive this area by bike, you can resume your journey through the walking paths in the green structure

Vijfhoekpark connected

Masterplan

How can the Vijfhoekpark be a connection between Zaandam South and ‘‘Havenstad’’? Assignment: Vijfhoek park in Zaandam. It´s a small park along the N516. It´s not easily accesible and also not attractive to visit, because of the surroundings. But it´s a park with a lot of potential. Definitly in the future when ´´Havenstad´´ will be developed. It´s located in the middle of all the green structures and I would like facilitate a connection between the park and the two city districts and surroundings. The conclusion from the Current situation: • There is a lot of noise from provincial road • Dike is functional - road. • Green strips with only grass • No footpaths along the water or the dike

Concept New route and functions

• North - South will be the route for the residents of ‘‘Havenstad’’ and Zaandam South. • East - West will be the connection of the park with the current green and water structures. • Vijfhoekpark will be the center for the green and water structure and the residents. • The road is the biggest barrier for the connection, therefore it needs to be lifted.

Analyse maps

Analysis of urban structures Cross sections

At the Academy I have learned to appreciate handdrawing again and found it valuable to learn how to make an analysis and come up with a solution in a short time. I was not used to use hand sketches for analysis. During my study we only used hand sketching in the first half of the programme. My way of thinking is reflected on the way I make maps of various aspects of places and cities. During my minor we also had excersies about landscape, I found it very interesting to learn more about the history, geomorphology and soil substrates. As an urbanist you are build upon the landscape, it’s the base of your plan. With sustainability in mind, I find it important to take this into account and to develop a more integral view as an urbanist.

A new typology for the entrance of Katendrecht Meeting each other

Current situation

Katendrecht is a neighborhood in Rotterdam. It used to be used a harbor. There are a lot of old sheds and small houses. The people who worked at the harbor often also lived in Katendrecht. Currently there are a lot of new developments at Katendrecht. For this project we can choose between the location in cross section A-A or location B-B. I chose location B-B because this part of Katendrecht hasn’t been developed and besides the plans of Bay house, there are no plans for the old garages in front of it. It’s also the entrance of the neigborhood, but it’s not a nice place for walking. It feels very closed off, because of the narrow street(s). The buildings on the left side are very new and high, but on the east side there is nothing more than old

garages and further down the street an old factory. Besides that, there is also no meeting point on the entrance of Katendrecht. All the meeting points are beyond the middle. It’s a little bit far to walk from east to west, therefore it would be nice to develop a new meeting place at the entrance of Katendrecht. For this development I wanted to focus on four subjects: • More green • A better streetprofile • A density that fits the surrounding erea • Develop a new meeting point

In this scenario I wanted to use most of the space for greenery and a meeting place, this results in a large park. In addition, I focused on a safer bicycle route, which is separated from the road. The building block principle is based on one of the typologies of Katendrecht. Katendrecht itself has a number of building blocks with varying facades and houses without and with gardens. Parking is possible under the gardens

Building block

14

and there is also parking on the street, mainly for visitors. The combination of the park and the building block results in a low fsi of 0.55. This scenario provides air and space in the planning area, but the dwellings do not fit in well with the surrounding buildings. This scenario allows for breathing space in the planned area, however the current homes do not necessarily connect well with the surrounding buildings.

In this scenario, I considered preserving the existing sheds. The buildings will be built on top of the sheds. But there will be a new space in between to cut the buildings in half and create a entrance for the buildings and parking garage. Parking is located inside the building. To fit in with the new plan, there is also room for offices. At street level there will be facilities in the plinth, with the possibility of terraces along. This will make the street much more lively and this will separate it from the traffic.

15

The FSI of this plan is a lot higher, 4.36. There could be even more open space in the plan, but this scenario does fit in the most with its surroundings. The towers on top of the buildings are also varied to break up the view. Furthermore, there are roof gardens on top, where on the right is being intended for public use. To come to this design I have again looked at typologies in the surrounding area. De Groene Kaap is a new building project, where the roof garden is public and continuous between different buildings. The Montevideo is a tower where parking, catering, offices and living are mixed. By combining these two, I created a new typology that fits the identity of Katendrecht and provides an entrance with a meeting place.

Photoshop plan During my third year, I had my first internship at West 8. I worked one day a week on a research project about nature inclusive building, here I discovered my fascination for greening the cities. Besides my own research about nature inclusive building, I also have learned a lot about making plans and theme shemes and maps to explain your plan. I worked with AutoCAD to change the parking spaces in the plan. I also learned a lot about how to explain a plan to a client using diagrams and theme maps. Some of the themes I worked on are the parking solutions, they wanted parking as much as possible out of the way of the street. The apartments have underground parking and the houses have storage spaces or shared parking. The balconies and front gardens were also very important for the streetscape. But they also thought about how the planned area would fit into the landscape, for which I made a Photoshop image.

Details of the plan Photoshop landscape

References landscape

This was a project into a polder park landscape around an old broadcasting station. In this project, I mainly looked into the detailing of the design to manage the quality, where the design of the landscape was a big part. For this I mainly looked up references and afterwards I also worked on a Photoshop of the bunker in the park. Furthermore, in this project I also looked for a solution to add parking, without losing the landscape quality, for this I also made a cross section. So with this project I was mainly concerned with the smaller scale with an eye to the details for the intended quality and I learned more about the polder landscape. An eye for the details was during the whole minor course a more challenging thing for me. I mainly learned about making concepts and therefore we also looked at references and maked variants and plans, but during the minor and my internship(s) I learned to look better at designing.

This is a project for a new residential area in Maarssen-Dorp. The vision for the area has been established by Bureau Nieuwe Gracht, in this phase they are working on the details. I had been asked to incorporate the landscape into the plan and to make a distinction between the dry river ridge landscape and the wet peat landscape.
