We are pleased to bring to you the 3rd issue of ‘SYNOPSIS’ for Rota Year 2013-14 in the form of a wall magazine. It covers our activities from January to March 2014, which is one of the most vibrant periods for our club activities- Celebration of New Year, World Rotaract Week, Holi among several others. As for the design and content of this issue, our experiments continue as we try to bring a balance between a club bulletin and a magazine. Our attempt woudn’t see the light of the day if it weren’t for the help of our members and the ececutive board. Happy reading and Happy new year 2071.

FROM THE CHIEF COORDINATOR - ‘WORLD ROTARACT WEEK’

Dear leaders, ‘World Rotaract Week’ is a special week where Rotaract Clubs from over 200 countries around the world engage in Rotaract celebration and Rotaract promotion through exemplary and unique activities. Rotaract Club of Dharan Ghopa, being a synonym of excellence, in arenas of Community service and Professional Development in the institute, celebrated this festival from 7th to 14th March by conducting various events. When we set out with the of events list, the humongous number of the programs in one week was intimidating. But with the untiring enthusiasm of all Rotaractors, and overall support from Rotarians, College Authorities, Sponsors and with little of God’s grace, we were able to pull it through. Our friends from Batch 2012, 2013 and my friend Rtr. Chiranjibi Patel (2011) deserve special mentioning for their outstanding contribution as we continue to ‘Serve Above Self’. 1. Cover Story...

ALIVE VOICE OF BPKIHS AND SHREE BALAJI ROTARACT DANCING SENSATION

14th March, 2014

On the occasion of World Rotaract Week 2014, Alive Voice of BPKIHS and Shree Balaji Rotaract Dancing sensation was organised with the objecticve of providing a a platform for BPKIHS fraternity an opppurtunity to showcase their singing and dancing skills and as they entertained a houseful audience in a gala cermony which also marked the closiing of the week. 7 contestants each for singing and dancing were selected by a panel of judges in a preliminary auditions held on 4th March to perform at the finale.The program was broadcast live on Kriti TV. Other media partners were The Kathmandu Post, Nagarik News and Blast times. Breathtaking performances by the visually impaired children of Shree Purwanchal Gyankschachu Vidyalaya and Purwanchal deaf school were the purest magical moments along with several other perforamances kept the capacity crowd on the edge of their seats. In the end, Dr. Avinav Sharma and Kamana Rai were declared winners. The judges for the programme were Ms. Mary Shakya and Mr.Krishna Raja Shrestha for singing category and Mr.Suresh Rai and Ms. Saraswoti mam for dancing category. This uninterrupted and smooth program was a feather in the hat for the closing ceremony of World Rotaract Week, 2014.

JOINT BULLETIN RELEASE

On 13th of March , we released a joint bulletin,’ SOUVENIR’ with our twin club -Rotaract Club Of Butwal with the colurful theme of holi. We are indebted to Rtr Niraj Pandey, President and Rtr Rajesh Pun, Editor of Rotaract Club Butwal for providing the necessary resources and guidance in preparing the Joint Bulletin.

INAUGURATION OF WORLD ROTARACT WEEK -Rtr. Suresh Bhandari & Rtr .Sanisha Karki

The Rotary-Rotaract futsal, bicycle stunt show and candle lightening were organized on the 2nd day of “World Rotaract Week”. The candle lighting also marked the celebration of “International Women’s Day”.More than 80 members participated in this program along with 5 Rotarians. The program began with a short formal session where RCC Rtn. Dr. Ajay Agrawal shared his best wishes for the events of the World rotaract week . The session was followed by a futsal match between a team of Rotarians led by Rtn. Dr. Ashish Shrestha against Rotaractors led by Rtr. Suresh Bhandari. Team Rotaract won by 3 goals to 1. The match was followed by a “Bicycle Stunt Show” which was performed by stuntsmen from ‘Green Wheels’ cycling Pvt Ltd. The programme ended with candle lighting and rally to mark “International Women’s day”. Around 150 participants including 80 rotaractors participated in the rally. The rally started infront of VC office and ended at the GOPD , BPKIHS.

DOCUMENTARY SHOW AND WALL OF HOPE CAMPAIGN -Rtr Anuj Baruwal & Rtr Menuka Sangraula

7th March,2014 Delhi Public School, Dharan The program started with the screening of documentary movie “FROM FEAR TO FREEDOM , ENDING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN” followed by an interactive session by Rtr. Anish kumar Sah.The partcipants also spoke about the subject matter and gave their feedback and suggestions. The interactive session was enlightened by inspiring speeches from Principal Mr. P.K.Shankaralingam and Vice-Principal Mrs. Santhya Vasistha. The program ended with vote of thanks to the school administration by co-ordinators and Lalit jha.In the end, children present during the program participated in making the ‘Wall of Hope’

NIRANJAN MEMORIAL SELF DEFENSE TRAINING for Female Rotaractors -Rtr. Bibha Pathak

Marking the International Women’s Day as a tribute, we organised a Self defense Training program for female rotaractors. The purpose of program was to build selfconfidence among girls and prepare them for any possible threats The program was scheduled for 3 consecutive days, each session of 2 hrs in Seminar hall, BPKIHS. Altogether 15 rotaractors and 7 observers were trained by 4 exclusive karate trained trainers whereby simple self defense skills were taught including basic karate trainings.

YAMAHA SLOW BIKE AND SCOOTY RACE Rtr. Rajan Sah & Rtr. Sunny Bhattarai

14th March ,2014 We organised “Yamaha Slow Bike and Scooty Race”. The purpose of this event was to create awareness regarding the safety rules while driving and preventing the accidents. In the program bike and scooty competed as separate events. Among the groups of 2, bike race saw the competition of over 30 bikes and 8 scooters. The top 2 participants from each group made it to the finals. Only license holding riders with helmets were allowed to participate in the program. The winners were awarded gift hampers by the representative of the sponsor- Yamaha Motor Company as a part of their corporate social responsibility. INTRA ROTARACT SPORTS FIESTA Rtr. Durgesh Chaudhary Rtr. Smriti Jha 9th-12th March 2014 We organized ‘Intra Rotaract sports fiesta’ this year in] addition to the programmes from last year. Different games like badminton, table tennis, futsal, tug-of-war,

cricket and computer games (for boys only), and dart were included. All members were divided into 4 groups. Winning teams were g iven points for any event their members won. In the end Group D was sorted out as winning team after all the games were over. Active participation from the mebers and observers added charm to the event.

GHANSHYAM SHANTI ROTARACT QUIZ COMPETITION

12th March 2014 The Rota Quiz was held in the Auditorium Hall of BPKIHS in the presence of a houseful audience. It contained various rounds including Rotary, Rotaract and general quiz. We also had questions for the audience and the members giving the correct answers were rewarded sweetly. The quiz was supported by Rtn. Professor Dr. Chandra Shekhar Agrawal, the chartered president of Rotary Club Of Dharan Ghopa and Rtn Dr. Sudha Agrawal. A total of 12 rotaractors participated in the closely fought quiz in a program attended by more than 70 people as audience.

SUBBA RATNA PRASAD MEMORIAL ORATORY COMPETITION -Rtr Indira Ojha & Rtr Rubina Maharjan 8th March,2014 On the ocassion of ‘International Women’s Day’, a Dharan municipality level school Oratory competition for was organised by Rotaract Club of Dharan Ghopa on the theme - “Change in women in the last decade” to discuss awareness about women issues and check the eloquence skills among children. The program witnessed the presence of 55 participants from different schools and BPKIHS. The judges were Mr. Subash Chandra Neupane and Mr. Subash Ghimire.

HEALTH CAMP AT JHUMKA PRISON Rtr. Ajita Silwal & Rtr. Alina Bastola

12th March 2014

As a part of 'PARISARYA:Doctors at Doors' series of health camps in Eastern Nepal, we conducted a health camp at Jhumka Prison in Inaruwa with the theme of 'Swastya Byakti Swasthya Samaj: tapai ko sath hamro prayas".During the health camp we provided curative,promotive and preventive health services to 450 inmates present at the jail. Altogether 15 Rotaractrors participated in the programme actively. The program partners were BPKIHS, Rotary Club of Dharan Ghopa, NMSRA and Jhumka Prison administration.

AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON DRUG ABUSE AND ADDICTION Rtr Ajita Silwal & Rtr Alina Bastola

We organized “Awareness Programme on Drug Abuse and Addiction� at Kirat Yakthung Chumlung (KYC), Dharan which is the rehabilitation centre for drug users on 11th March 2014 During the programme different topics were discussed and presented; along with documentary and short films regarding drug abuse, hepatitis and HIV/AIDS infection. The duration of the program was 2 hours and about 35 participants were benefitted from the program

ALBENDAZOLE AND ORS DISTRIBUTION IN SAP AREA Rtr. Sabitra Bashyal

9th March, 2014 As a deworming campaign, Albendazole and ORS distribution was conducted in SAP area. Over 100 children benefitted from this campaign.

Hello friends, the months from January to March were full of activities in the club and my avenue was no exception to it.

USA NEPAL HUMANITARIAN SERVICE AWARDS 2014 10th January 2014, Ashok Party Palace, Patan We were awarded with “USA-Nepal Humanitarian Award 2014” on 10th January 2014 in a gala ceremony on the occasion of celebration of 23 years of Humanitarian Service projects in Nepal organised by Rotary District 7510 USA, Friends of Nepal-New Jersey and Nepal District 3292. We were awarded under the category of “Outstanding Young Program- Youth Leadership” for our “contributions in serving the various groups of underprivileged and needy people of the society”-as the citation read. The Humanitarian Award is bestowed on individuals or organizations which, through their outstanding community and civic involvement and personal dedication have made a significant contribution of leadership or service which has enriched the lives of people around the world. This award is the product of untiring efforts of our rotaractors working with the motto of ‘Service above Self’ and ‘Fellowship through Service’. The other recipients of the award were: Mr. Dhurba Bahadur Raut- 30 years in humanitarian service: Volunteer Service. Mr. Daya Ram Maharjan, 20 years of service to special children: Community Service. Mr. Hari Man Shrestha Kartik Naach Sangha: Cultural Preservation Mr. Uttam Sanjel Outstanding Educational Service: Radio Chunumunu: Journalism and Children Welfare.

CERTIFIACTE OF APPRECIATION 4th Jan, 2014 Rotaract Club of Dharan Ghopa was honoured with ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ by Shree Purwanchal Gyan Chachhu School for visually impaired children on the occasion of their 37th Annual Day Celebration and 204th Louis Braille Day for our efforts through PAILA (project on Sexual and reproductive health education) , Deworming program (through Albendazole distribution programme) and Free Health Camp for visually impaired children. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Rtn Keshari Thapa , Principal of the school and the children for their kind gesture and letting us be a part of their lives.

“Love is a symbol of eternity. It wipes out all sense of time, destroying all memory of a beginning and all fear of an end. To love is to receive a glimpse of heaven.” On Valentine ’s Day, we organised the much awaited event of the season “Rotaract Valentine Dance Party 2014” to celebrate love. The event was organised in the aid of “PARISHRYA: Doctors at Door”- Series of Free Health Camp in Eastern Nepal. On the day of Valentine’s Day we had organised greeting cards competition. Altogether there were 15 cards in the competition. The cards were so beautiful that it gave the jury a difficult time in choosing the winner. After very careful scrutiny, 4 cards were selected in 4 different categories.

HOSTING FOURTH ZONAL MEETING 14th March 2014 We hosted the 4th Zonal Meeting of Rotaractors of Zone I of RID 3292, Nepal and Bhutan on 14th March 2014 at Seminar Hall. The meeting was chaired by ZRR Zone I Rtr. Dr. Bijay Bhandari.

ZONAL HOLI CELEBRATION

17th March 2014 We celebrated Holi-Festival of Colours, at BPKIHS Basketball court with Rotaractors from Rotaract Club OF Dharan, Rotaract Club of Itahari, Rotaract Club of Biratnagar and Rotaract Club-Of Phulbari. ZRR Rtr. Dr. Bijay Bhandari, started the program with introduction session and soon colours, refreshments and celebrations began. It ended with dance party followed by photo sessions. We would like to thank all the Rotaractors for accepting our invitations and attending the events.

FIRST AID TRAINING: A Joint Project with Twin Club- RAC Swoyambhu

Thames International College, Kathmandu We jointly organised a ‘First Aid Training Session’. The prime objective of the program was to educate the Rotaractors about the Basic skills of First Aid so that they will be able to provide the appropriate care to the patients in case of emergency before taking to the hospital. Altogether 51 rotaractors from 11 different rotaract clubs participated in the event including DRR Rtr. Ashish Chaulagain and other Rotaract District committee memebers. Rtr. Lalit jha, Rtr. Ananta Aryal, Rtr. Sanjay Paudel conducted the session as a resource person. We would like to thank Rotaract District Committee for their support.

NATIONAL POLIO PLUS IMMUNIZATION CAMPAIGN

19th-21st December,2013 23­-25th January, 2014 Our club, in association with Rotary club of Dharan Ghopa, Rotaract club of Dharan and Rotary Club of Dharan organised the awareness campaign throughout Dharan municipality in two phases, as a part of ‘Polio Plus’ Immunisation program. As a part of same program, ‘End Polio Rally’ was conducted on the next day. As a result of our untiring efforts, Nepal was declared a Polio Free country on 26th March, 2014

SAP ACTIVITIESART WORKSHOP AT PURWANCHAL DEAF SCHOOL

We successfully completed Art Workshops in collaboration with The Rose International Fund for Children (TRIFC), USA at Shree Purwanchal Deaf School, Dharan The workshop consisted of 4 days of training classes followed by Exhibition on 5th Day. Training was provided by artist, Illustrator Miss Louise De Contes from France from 19th to 23rd January 2014. It was assisted by over 15 rotaractors from our club. It was primarily aimed to promote art initiatives in place where it doesn’t exist, through sharing and exchanging experiences and explore the imagination and creativity through Paintings and Pictures of hearing impaired children.

FIFTH NATIONAL DEAF CRICKET TOURNAMENT The 5th National Deaf cricket tournament was organised in Dharan from 7th to 14th March .Our club was a part of the event as a core organiser by managing them the venue at BPKIHS Main Ground for the competition as well as providing logistic support and medical treatment to the players. We were delighted to see Shree Purwanchal Deaf School Dharan as winners of the 5th National Deaf Cricket Tournament. We heartily congratulate all the players, students for their efforts in organising and winning the competition.

I SMILE WITH ROTARACT -Rtr. Rashmi Basnet

11th January, 2014 Delhi Public School, Dharan As a part of ‘I smile with Rotaract’ we taught school students about oral hygiene and its importance. We demonstrated brushing and hand washing techniques to about 50 students living inside hostel premises.

PAILA- AWARENESS, AWAKENING, ACTION Between the constraints poised by examination schedules of the children and our Roraractors we were able to manage 3 visits. 1. “EXCEL” PAINTING AND SKETCHING CLASSES Rtr. Bishnu Gurung

We conducted “EXCEL” Painting and Sketching classes. About 25 participants were trained under renowned artist Mr. Lekh Thapa Magar for one month on alternate days. The programme helped to bring out the inner talent in many of us.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE AVENUE -Rtr Sanjay Poudel

Under International Services, 1. We hosted Rtn. Rose Stevens and the Director of The Rose International Fund for Children 2. We conducted follow up visits for Abhilasha Goat Project on the following dates 7th Jan, 2014 12th Feb, 2014 15th March, 2014 23rd March, 2014 In future, we plan to benefit more families with this project by providing goats to more families.
